The concept of gauge field is a cornerstone of modern physics and the synthetic gauge field has emerged as a new way to manipulate particles in many disciplines. In optics, several schemes of Abelian synthetic gauge fields have been proposed. Here, we introduce a new platform for realizing synthetic SU(2) non-Abelian gauge fields acting on two-dimensional optical waves in a wide class of anisotropic materials and discover novel phenomena. We show that a virtual non-Abelian Lorentz force arising from material anisotropy can induce light beams to travel along Zitterbewegung trajectories even in homogeneous media. We further design an optical non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm system which results in the exotic spin density interference effect. We can extract the Wilson loop of an arbitrary closed optical path from a series of gauge fixed points in the interference fringes. Our scheme offers a new route to study SU(2) gauge field related physics using optics.

What happen in the brain when human beings play games with computers? Here a simple zero-sum game was conducted to investigate how people make decision via their brain even they know that their opponent is a computer. There are two choices (a low or high number) for people and also two strategies for the computer (red color or green color). When the number selected by the human subject meet the red color, the person loses the score which is equal to the number. On the contrary, the person gains the number of score if the computer chooses a green color for the number selected by the human being. Both the human subject and the computer give their choice at the same time, and subjects have been told that the computer make its decision randomly on the red color or green color. During the experiments, the signal of electroencephalograph (EEG) obtained from brain of subjects was recorded. From the analysis of EEG, we find that people mind the loss more than the gain, and the phenomenon becoming obvious when the gap between loss and gain grows. In addition, the signal of EEG is clearly distinguishable before making different decisions. It is observed that significant negative waves in the entire brain region when the participant has a greater expectation for the outcome, and these negative waves are mainly concentrated in the forebrain region in the brain of human beings.

Interactions between multipolar nuclear transitions and gravitational waves (GWs) are theoretically investigated. Two nonclassical scenarios of the GW detection are suggested. We demonstrate in this report that the long-lived Moessbauer nuclides of multipolar transitions are suitable transducers to detect the im**ing GWs. Shape deformation and spin flip of nucleus are derived from the Hamiltonian with gravity interaction. The GWs generate a nuclear quadrupole deformation in analogy with the Stark effect, of which the electric field generates the dipole deformation of electron orbits. Likewise in analogy with the nuclear magnetic resonance that the rotating radio-frequency field flips the nuclear spin, the GWs flip the nuclear spin by the resonant helicity-rotation-gravity coupling. The high energy states of the quadrupole deformation in heavy nuclides can dramatically speed up the multipolar transitions, which may be important for the GW detection particularly in the low frequency band, ranging from 100 nHz to 1 Hz.

The Lorentz transformation is derived without the postulate of the universal limiting speed, and the general Edwards transformation is obtained by using the principle of permutation invariance (covariance). It is shown that the existences of the one-way universal limiting speed (in the Lorentz transformation) and the constancy of the two-way average speed of light (in the Edwards transformation) are the necessary consequences of the principle of permutation invariance that is consistent with the postulate of relativity. The connection between the Edward transformation and the general coordinate transformation is discussed, and based on this, we find that the physical meaning of the Edward parameter, which indicates the anisotropy of the speed of light, is a gravitomagnetic potential of the spacetime.

We report the measurements of in-plane resistivity, Hall effect, and Nernst effect in Zn doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. The pseudogap temperature, $T^*$, determined from the temperature dependence of resistivity, does not change significantly with Zn do**. Meanwhile the onset temperature ($T^ν$) of anomalous Nernst signal above $T_{c0}$, which is interpreted as evidence for vortex-like excitations, decreases sharply as the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c0}$ does. A significant decrease in the maximum of vortex Nernst signal in mixed state is also observed, which is consistent with the scenario that Zn impurities cause a decrease in the superfluid density and therefore suppress the superconductivity. The phase diagram of $T^*$, $T^ν$, and $T_{c0}$ versus Zn content is presented and discussed.

The Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_2$ samples were found to be vulnerable to water in the air and a hydration process in which H$_2$O molecules fill oxygen vacancies in CoO$_2$ layers is suggested to be responsible for the unusual vulnerability to water. The transport properties, including resistivity (\emph{$ρ$}), thermopower (\emph{S}) and Hall coefficient (\emph{R$_H$}), were studied in a temperature range of 5-300 K. The compound shows a weak localization of carriers just below 200 K and Co$^{3+}$-Co$^{4+}$ charge ordering at about 30 K, a relatively lower temperature than previously reported. The results seem to be quite different from those previously reported for this system [Foo et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 (2004) 247001]. Possible mechanism underlying this kind of inconsistency is discussed.

The theoretical mechanism for realizing the negative refractive index with {\it electromagnetically induced transparency} (EIT) is studied. It is shown that in a three-level dense atomic gas, there is a frequency band in which the EIT medium will exhibit simultaneously negative electric permittivity and magnetic permeability in the optical frequency range, and the atomic gas thus becomes a left-handed material. The expressions for the electric permittivity and the magnetic permeability for the probe frequency is presented. One of the remarkable features of the present novel scheme is such that the obtained EIT left-handed material is {\it isotropic} and may therefore have some potentially important applications in the development of new techniques in quantum optics.

Three weak gravitational effects associated with the gravitomagnetic fields are taken into account in this paper: (i) we discuss the background Lorentz transformation and gauge transformation in a linearized gravity theory, and obtain the expression for the spin of gravitational field by using the canonical procedure and Noether theorem; (ii) we point out that by using the coordinate transformation from the fixed frame to the rotating frame, it is found that the nature of Mashhoon's spin-rotation coupling is in fact an interaction between the gravitomagnetic moment of a spinning particle and the gravitomagnetic fields. The fact that the rotational angular velocity of a rotating frame can be viewed as a gravitomagnetic field is demonstrated; (iii) a purely gravitational generalization of Mashhoon's spin-rotation coupling, i.e., the interaction of the graviton spin with the gravitomagnetic fields is actually a self-interaction of the spacetime (gravitational fields). In the present paper, we will show that this self-interaction will also arise in a non-inertial frame of reference itself: specifically, a rotating frame that experiences a fluctuation of its rotational frequency (i.e., the change in the rotational angular frequency) will undergo a weak self-interaction. The self-interaction of the rotating frame, which can also be called the self-interaction of the spacetime of the rotating frame, is just the non-inertial generalization of the interaction of the graviton spin with the gravitomagnetic fields.

A new scheme of realizing the nonadiabatic conditional geometric phase shift via a noncoplanar (and coiled) fiber system is presented in this Letter. It is shown that the effective Hamiltonian that describes the interaction of polarized photons with the fiber medium is just the Wang-Keiji type of Hamiltonian. This, therefore, means that the coiled fiber system may be an ideal implementation of realizing the nonadiabatic geometric phase gates for the topological quantum computation. The remarkable feature of the present method is that it can automatically meet the conditions and requirements proposed in the Wang-Keiji scheme: (i) in the coiled fiber system, the dynamical phase of photon wavefunction caused by the interaction Hamiltonian automatically vanishes; (ii) the Wang-Keiji requirement for the parameters in the Wang-Keiji Hamiltonian can be exactly satisfied automatically in the fiber system; (iii) the conditional initial state can be easily achieved by manipulating the initial wave vector of polarized photons. Due to these three advantages, the coiled fiber system may be a potentially practical way of achieving the nonadiabatic conditional geometric phase shift (and hence the nonadiabatic geometric quantum gates).

In order to describe the space-time curvature due to the topological dual mass, we construct the dual Einstein's tensor. Further investigation shows that gravitomagnetic potentials caused by dual mass are respectively analogous to the trigonometric and hyperbolic geometric phase. In this paper, we assume that the observer is fixed in a comoving frame of reference with $g_{00}=\fracλΛ$, where $λ$ and $Λ$ denote the comoving parameter and the cosmological constant, respectively. By using the {\it comoving suppression mechanism} and {\it Mach's principle} (the latter of which is used to determine the comoving parameter $λ$), we calculate the vacuum energy density of quantum fluctuation field in the above-mentioned comoving frame of reference. It is shown that in such a comoving frame of reference, the cosmological constant will greatly decrease by many orders of magnitude (if Mach's principle is applied to this calculation, then it will be shown that $Λ$ is reduced by about 120 orders of magnitude). Additionally, we briefly discuss the related topics such as the varying observed speed of light ($\frac{{\rm d}c}{{\rm d}t}={\mathcal O}(10^{-9}{\rm m/s}^{2})$) and the mystery of anomalous acceleration ($\sim 10^{-9}{\rm m/s}^{2}$) acquired by the Pioneer 10/11, Galileo and Ulysses spacecrafts.

Gravitomagnetic charge that can also be referred to as the {\it dual mass} or {\it magnetic mass} is the topological charge in gravity theory. A gravitomagnetic monopole at rest can produce a stationary gravitomagnetic field. Due to the topological nature of gravitomagnetic charge, the metric of spacetime where the gravitomagnetic matter is present will be nonanalytic. In this paper both the dual curvature tensors (which can characterize the dynamics of gravitational charge/monopoles) and the antisymmetric gravitational field equation of gravitomagnetic matter are presented. We consider and discuss the mathematical formulation and physical properties of the dual curvature tensors and scalar, antisymmetric source tensors, dual spin connection (including the low-motion weak-field approximation), dual vierbein field as well as dual current densities of gravitomagnetic charge. It is shown that the dynamics of gravitomagnetic charge can be founded within the framework of the above dual quantities. In addition, the dual relationship between the dynamical theories of gravitomagnetic charge (dual mass) and gravitoelectric charge (mass) is also taken into account in the present paper.

This report presents an approach to the exact solutions of the time-dependent Jaynes-Cummings (J-C) model without the rotating wave approximation (RWA). It is shown that there is a squeezing-operator unitary transformation for relating the J-C model without RWA and the one with RWA. Thus by using an appropriate squeezing unitary transformation, the time-dependent J-C model without RWA can be transformed into the one with RWA that has been exactly solved previously, and based on this one can readily obtain the exact solutions of the time-dependent Jaynes-Cummings (J-C) model without RWA. The approach presented here also shows that we can treat these two kinds of time-dependent J-C models (both with and without RWA) in a unified way.

This note is concerned with the connections between the conformal group and the quantum states of photons. It is shown that there exist analogies between the photonic quantum states and the conformal group, namely, the time-development operator (with a free Hamiltonian), displacement and squeezing operators of the vacuum state corresponds to the dilatation, translation, proper Lorentz transformations, respectively, and that the three quantum states of photons ({\it i.e.}, Fock state, coherent state and squeezed state) in quantum optics thus bear some analogy to the above three transformations in the conformal group. Based on this comparison, we argue by analogy that if the phase transformation operators acting on a vacuum state (hence the Fock state, coherent state and squeezed state are generated) are truly exactly analogous to the conformal transformations, then a fourth quantum state of photons (referred to as the {\it conformal state}), which corresponds to the {\it special conformal} transformation (acceleration transformation) and will therefore be of special physical interest, can be suggested.

By making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory, the solution of the Schrödinger equation for the time-dependent linear potential corresponding to the quadratic-form Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant $I_{\rm q}(t)$ is obtained in the present paper. It is emphasized that in order to obtain the general solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, one should first find the complete set of Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants. For the present quantum system with a time-dependent linear potential, the linear $I_{\rm l}(t)$ and quadratic $I_{\rm q}(t)$ (where the latter $I_{\rm q}(t)$ cannot be written as the squared of the former $I_{\rm l}(t)$, {\it i.e.}, the relation $I_{\rm q}(t)= cI_{\rm l}^{2}(t)$ does not hold true always) will form a complete set of Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants. It is also shown that the solution obtained by Bekkar {\it et al.} more recently is the one corresponding to the linear $I_{\rm l}(t)$, one of the invariants that form the complete set. In addition, we discuss some related topics regarding the comment [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 68}, 016101 (2003)] of Bekkar {\it et al.} on Guedes's work [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 63}, 034102 (2001)] and Guedes's corresponding reply [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 68}, 016102 (2003)].

In order to investigate this physically interesting geometric phases at quantum-vacuum level, we suggest an experimentally feasible scheme to test it by means of a noncoplanarly curved fiber made of gyrotropic media. A remarkable feature of the present experimental realization is that one can easily extract the nonvanishing and nontrivial quantum-vacuum geometric phases of left- and/or right- handed circularly polarized light from the vanishing and trivial total quantum-vacuum geometric phases.

We concern ourselves with two kinds of photon effective rest mass, i.e., the frequency-dependent and frequency-independent effective rest mass. Based on these two definitions, we calculate the photon effective rest mass in the left-handed medium and the 2TDLM media, the latter of which is described by the so-called two time derivative Lorentz material (2TDLM) model. Additionally, we concentrate primarily on the torque, which is caused by the interaction between self-induced charge currents in dilute plasma (e.g., the secondary cosmic rays) and interstellar magnetic fields (ambient cosmic magnetic vector potentials), acting on the torsion balance of the rotating torsion balance experiment.

Some physically interesting properties and effects of wave propagation in biaxially anisotropic left-handed materials are investigated in this paper. We show that in the biaxially gyrotropic left-handed material, the left-right coupling of circularly polarized light arises due to the negative indices in permittivity and permeability tensors of gyrotropic media. It is well known that the geometric phases of photons inside a curved fiber in previous experiments often depend on the cone angles of solid angles subtended by a curve traced by the direction of wave vector of light, at the center of photon momentum space. Here, however, for the light propagating inside certain anisotropic left-handed media we will present a different geometric phase that is independent of the cone angles. The extra phases of electromagnetic wave resulting from the instantaneous helicity inversion at the interfaces between left- and right- handed (LRH) media is also studied in detail by using the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory. Some interesting applications (e.g., controllable position-dependent frequency shift, detection of quantum-vacuum geometric phases and helicity reversals at the LRH interfaces etc.) of above effects and phenomena in left-handed media is briefly discussed.

Although Luo et al.'s experiment is excellent, here we have a supplement to their result, since our evaluation shows that the photon effective rest mass due to the self-induced charge currents in the environmental dilute plasma (e.g., the muon component and other charged particles in secondary cosmic ray flux) is just the same order of magnitude as Luo's obtained upper limit on photon mass.
