The R(1), R(3) and P(3) ro-vibrational transitions in the (2-0) overtone band of the HD molecule are measured in Doppler-free saturation using the technique of NICE-OHMS spectroscopy. For the P(3) line, hitherto not observed in saturation, we report a frequency of $203\,821\,936\,805\,(60)$ kHz. The dispersive line shapes observed in the three spectra show strong correlations, allowing for extraction of accurate information on rotational level spacings. This leads to level spacings of $Δ_{(J=3)-(J=1)}= 13\,283\,245\,098\,(30)$ kHz in the $v=0$ ground state, and $Δ_{(J=4)-(J=2)}= 16\,882\,368\,179\,(20)$ kHz in the $v=2$ excited vibration in HD. These results show that experimental values for the rotational spacings are consistently larger than those obtained with advanced ab initio theoretical calculations at 1.5$σ$, where the uncertainty is determined by theory. The same holds for the vibrational transitions where systematic deviations of 1.7-1.9$σ$ are consistently found for the five lines accurately measured in the (2-0) band.

In the studied 17,950 - 22,500 cm$^{-1}$ and 86,800 - 92,100 cm$^{-1}$ regions, 480 transitions have been measured. These new experimental data were combined with data from the C $\to$ A and B $\to$ A systems, previously analyzed in 13C17O. The frequencies of 1003 transitions derived from 12 bands were used to analyze the perturbations between the A$^1Π$ ($ν$ = 0 - 3) levels and rovibrational levels of the d$^3Δ_i$, e$^3Σ^-$, a$'{}^3Σ^+$, I$^1Σ^-$ and D$^1Δ$ states as well as to a preliminary investigation of weak irregularities that appear in the B$^1Σ^+$ ($ν$ = 0) level. Deperturbed molecular constants and term values of the A$^1Π$ state were obtained. The spin-orbit and L-uncoupling interaction parameters as well as isotopologue-independent spin-orbit and rotation-electronic perturbation parameters were derived.

This result constitutes a test of quantum electrodynamics in the molecular domain, while a perspective is opened to determine nuclear charge radii from molecules.

Quasi-bound resonances of H$_2$ are produced via two-photon photolysis of H$_2$S molecules as reactive intermediates or transition states, and detected before decay of the parent molecule into three separate atoms. As was previously reported [K.F. Lai et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 183001 (2021)] four centrifugally bound quantum resonances with lifetimes of multiple $μ$s, lying energetically above the dissociation limit of the electronic ground state X$^1Σ_g^+$ of H$_2$, were observed as X($v,J$) = (7,21)$^*$, (8,19)$^*$, (9,17)$^*$, and (10,15)$^*$, while also the short-lived ($\sim 1.5$ ns) quasi-bound resonance X(11,13)$^*$ was probed. The present paper gives a detailed account on the identification of the quasi-bound or shape resonances, based on laser detection via F-X two-photon transitions, and their strongly enhanced Franck-Condon factors due to the shifting of the wave function density to large internuclear separation. In addition, the assignment of the rotational quantum number is verified by subsequent multi-step laser excitation into autoionization continuum resonances. Existing frameworks of full-fledged ab initio computations for the bound region in H$_2$, including Born-Oppenheimer, adiabatic, non-adiabatic, relativistic and quantum-electrodynamic contributions, are extended into the energetic range above the dissociation energy. These comprehensive calculations are compared to the accurate measurements of energies of quasi-bound resonances, finding excellent agreement. Etc.

For $J=13,15,17,19$ and 21, resonances with lifetimes in the range of nano to milliseconds were observed with an accuracy of 30~MHz (1.4~mK). The experimental resonance positions are found to be in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions when nonadiabatic and quantum electrodynamical corrections are included. This is the first time such effects are observed in collisions between neutral atoms. From the potential energy curve of the H$_2$ molecule, now tested at high accuracy over a wide range of internuclear separations, the s-wave scattering length for singlet H(1s)+H(1s) scattering is determined at $a = 0.2735^{39}_{31}~a_0$.

Excellent agreement is found between experiment and theory, thus providing a verification of the validity of the NAPT-framework for these tritiated species. While the transition frequencies were corrected for ac-Stark shifts, the contributions of non-resonant background as well as quantum interference effects between resonant features in the nonlinear spectroscopy were quantitatively investigated, also leading to corrections to the transition frequencies. Methods of saturated CARS with the observation of Lamb dips, as well as the use of continuous-wave radiation for the Stokes frequency were explored, that might pave the way for future higher-accuracy CARS measurements.

The dissociation energy of H$_2$ represents a benchmark quantity to test the accuracy of first-principles calculations. We present a new measurement of the energy interval between the EF $^1Σ_g^+(v=0,N=1)$ state and the 54p1$_1$ Rydberg state of H$_2$. When combined with previously determined intervals, this new measurement leads to an improved value of the dissociation energy $D_0^{N=1}$ of ortho-H$_2$ that has, for the first time, reached a level of uncertainty that is three times smaller than the contribution of about 1 MHz resulting from the finite size of the proton. The new result of 35999.582834(11) cm$^{-1}$ is in remarkable agreement with the theoretical result of 35999.582820(26) cm$^{-1}$ obtained in calculations including high-order relativistic and quantum electrodynamics corrections, as reported in the companion article (M. Puchalski, J. Komasa, P. Czachorowski and K. Pachucki, submitted). This agreement resolves a recent discrepancy between experiment and theory that had hindered a possible use of the dissociation energy of H$_2$ in the context of the current controversy on the charge radius of the proton.

Absorption lines of H$_2$ and HD molecules observed at high redshift in the line of sight towards quasars are a test ground to search for variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio $μ$. For this purpose, results from astronomical observations are compared with a compilation of molecular data of the highest accuracy, obtained in laboratory studies as well as in first-principles calculations. Aims: A comprehensive line list is compiled for H$_2$ and HD absorption lines in the Lyman ($B^1Σ_u^+$ - $X^1Σ_g^+$) and Werner ($C^1Π_u$ - $X^1Σ_g^+$) band systems up to the Lyman cutoff at 912 Angstroms. Molecular parameters listed for each line $i$ are the transition wavelength $λ_i$, the line oscillator strength $f_i$, the radiative dam** parameter of the excited state $Γ_i$, and the sensitivity coefficient $K_i$ for a variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio. Methods: The transition wavelengths $λ_i$ for the H$_2$ and HD molecules are determined by a variety of advanced high-precision spectroscopic experiments involving narrowband vacuum ultraviolet lasers, Fourier-transform spectrometers, and synchrotron radiation sources. Results for the line oscillator strengths $f_i$, dam** parameters $Γ_i$, and sensitivity coefficients $K_i$ are obtained in theoretical quantum chemical calculations. Results: A new list of molecular data is compiled for future analyses of cold clouds of hydrogen absorbers, specifically for studies of $μ$-variation from quasar data. The list is applied in a refit of quasar absorption spectra of B0642$-$5038 and J1237$+$0647 yielding constraints on a variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio $Δμ/μ$ consistent with previous analyses.

Spectra of the \BX$(0, 0)$ band are measured in order to tie information from the latter emission data to the level structure of A$^1Π$$(v=0)$. The high pressures in the absorption cell at the synchrotron and the high temperatures in the emission discharge permitted monitoring of high rotational quantum levels in A$^1Π$$(v=0)$ up to $J=43$. All information, in total over 900 spectral lines, was included in an effective-Hamiltonian analysis of the A$^1Π(v=0, J)$ levels that are directly perturbed by the e$\,^3Σ^-$$(v=1)$, d$^3\!Δ$$(v=4)$, a$'^3Σ^+$$(v=9)$, d$^3\!Δ$$(v=0)$, I$\,^1Σ^-$$(v=0, 1)$ close-lying levels and the e$\,^3Σ^-$$(v=0,2)$, d$^3\!Δ$$(v=3,5)$, a$'^3Σ^+$$(v=8,10)$ remote levels, as well being indirectly influenced by the a$^3Π$$(v=10, 11)$ state. The influence of nine further perturber levels and their interactions was investigated and are not significant for reproducing the present experimental data. This analysis leads to a much improved description in terms of molecular constants and interaction parameters, compared to previous studies of the same energy region for other CO isotopologues.

The hydrogen molecule has become a test ground for quantum electrodynamical calculations in molecules. Expanding beyond studies on stable hydrogenic species to the heavier radioactive tritium-bearing molecules, we report on a measurement of the fundamental T$_2$ vibrational splitting $(v= 0 \rightarrow 1)$ for $J=0-5$ rotational levels. Precision frequency metrology is performed with high-resolution coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy at an experimental uncertainty of $10-12$~MHz, where sub-Doppler saturation features are exploited for the strongest transition. The achieved accuracy corresponds to a fifty-fold improvement over a previous measurement, and allows for the extraction of relativistic and QED contributions to T$_2$ transition energies.

Weak transitions in the (2,0) overtone band of the HD molecule at $λ= 1.38 \, μ$m were measured in saturated absorption using the technique of noise-immune cavity-enhanced optical heterodyne molecular spectroscopy. Narrow Doppler-free lines were interrogated with a spectroscopy laser locked to a frequency comb laser referenced to an atomic clock to yield transition frequencies [R(1) = $217\,105\,181\,895\,(20)$ kHz; R(2) = $219\,042\,856\,621\,(28)$ kHz; R(3) = $220\,704\,304\,951\,(28)$ kHz] at three orders of magnitude improved accuracy. These benchmark values provide a test of QED in the smallest neutral molecule, and open up an avenue to resolve the proton radius puzzle, as well as constrain putative fifth forces and extra dimensions.

While spectroscopic measurements on the stable species have progressively improved over the years, high resolution studies on the radioactive isotopologues $\rm{T_2}$, $\rm{HT}$ and $\rm{DT}$ have been limited. Here we present an accurate determination of $\rm{T_2}$ $Q(J = 0 - 5)$ transition energies in the fundamental vibrational band of the ground electronic state, by means of high resolution Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy. With the present experimental uncertainty of $0.02\,\rm{cm^{-1}}$, which is a fivefold improvement over previous measurements, agreement with the latest theoretical calculations is demonstrated.

Accurate $EF{}^1Σ^+_g-X{}^1Σ^+_g$ transition energies in molecular hydrogen were determined for transitions originating from levels with highly-excited vibrational quantum number, $v=11$, in the ground electronic state. Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy was applied on vibrationally excited H$_2^*$, produced via the photodissociation of H$_2$S, yielding transition frequencies with accuracies of $45$ MHz or $0.0015$ cm$^{-1}$. An important improvement is the enhanced detection efficiency by resonant excitation to autoionizing $7pπ$ electronic Rydberg states, resulting in narrow transitions due to reduced ac-Stark effects. Using known $EF$ level energies, the level energies of $X(v=11, J=1,3-5)$ states are derived with accuracies of typically 0.002 cm$^{-1}$. These experimental values are in excellent agreement with, and are more accurate than the results obtained from the most advanced ab initio molecular theory calculations including relativistic and QED contributions.

Electronic spectra of C$_6$H are measured in the $18\,950-21\,100$ cm$^{-1}$ domain using cavity ring-down spectroscopy of a supersonically expanding hydrocarbon plasma. In total, 19 (sub)bands of C$_6$H are presented, all probing the vibrational manifold of the B$^2Π$ electronically excited state. The assignments are guided by electronic spectra available from matrix isolation work, isotopic substitution experiments (yielding also spectra for $^{13}$C$_6$H and C$_6$D), predictions from ab initio calculations as well as rotational fitting and vibrational contour simulations using the available ground state parameters as obtained from microwave experiments. Besides the $0_0^0$ origin band, three non-degenerate stretching vibrations along the linear backbone of the C$_6$H molecule are assigned: the $ν_6$ mode associated with the C-C bond vibration and the $ν_4$ and $ν_3$ modes associated with C$\equiv$C triple bonds. For the two lowest $ν_{11}$ and $ν_{10}$ bending modes, a Renner-Teller analysis is performed identifying the $μ^2Σ$($ν_{11}$) and both $μ^2Σ$($ν_{10}$) and $κ^2Σ$($ν_{10}$) components. In addition, two higher lying bending modes are observed, which are tentatively assigned as $μ^2Σ$($ν_9$) and $μ^2Σ$($ν_8$) levels. In the excitation region below the first non-degenerate vibration ($ν_6$), some $^2Π-^{2}Π$ transitions are observed that are assigned as even combination modes of low-lying bending vibrations. The same holds for a $^2Π-^{2}Π$ transition found above the $ν_6$ level. From these spectroscopic data and the vibronic analysis a comprehensive energy level diagram for the B$^2Π$ state of C$_6$H is derived and presented.

The lowest $v=0$ level of the A$^1Π$, state of the $^{13}$C$^{16}$O isotopologue of carbon monoxide has been reinvestigated with a variety of high resolution spectroscopic techniques. The A$^1Π-$X$^1Σ^+(0,0)$ band has been studied by vacuum-ultraviolet Fourier-transform absorption spectroscopy, using the SOLEIL synchrotron as a radiation source. Spectra were obtained under quasi-static gas conditions at liquid-nitrogen temperature, room temperature and at an elevated temperature of 900 K, with absolute accuracies of 0.01$-$0.03 cm$^{-1}$. Two-photon Doppler-free laser spectroscopy has been applied to a limited number of transitions in the A$^1Π-$X$^1Σ^+(0,0)$ band, under collision-free circumstances of a molecular beam, yielding an absolute accuracy of 0.002 cm$^{-1}$. The third technique is high-resolution Fourier-transform emission spectroscopy in the visible region applied to the B$^1Σ^+-$A$^1Π(0,0)$ band in a gas discharge, at an absolute accuracy of up to 0.003 cm$^{-1}$. With these methods rotational levels of A$^1Π(0)$ could be studied in both parity components up to a rotational quantum number of $J=46$. The frequencies of 397 transitions were used to analyse the perturbations between the A$^1Π(0)$ level by vibrational levels of the D$^1\!Δ$, e$^3Σ^-$, d$^3\!Δ$, and a$'^3Σ^+$ states.

The observations were performed with the Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph with a signal-to-noise ratio of 40 per 2.5 kms$^{-1}$ per pixel at $\sim 5000$ Å. Thirteen CO vibrational bands in this absorber are detected: the A$^{1}Π$ - X$^{1}Σ^{+}$ ($ν'$,0) for $ν' = 0 - 8$, B$^{1}Σ^{+}$ - X$^{1}Σ^{+}$ (0,0), C$^{1}Σ^{+}$ - X$^{1}Σ^{+}$ (0,0), and E$^{1}Π$ - X$^{1}Σ^{+}$ (0,0) singlet-singlet bands and the d$^{3}Δ$ - X$^{1}Σ^{+}$ (5,0) singlet-triplet band. An updated database including the most precise molecular inputs needed for a $μ$-variation analysis is presented for rotational levels $J = 0 - 5$, consisting of transition wavelengths, oscillator strengths, natural lifetime dam** parameters, and sensitivity coefficients to a variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio. A comprehensive fitting method was used to fit all the CO bands at once and an independent constraint of $Δμ/μ= (0.7 \pm 1.6_{stat} \pm 0.5_{syst}) \times 10^{-5}$ was derived from CO only. A combined analysis using both molecular hydrogen and CO in the same J1237+0647 absorber returned a final constraint on the relative variation of $Δμ/μ= (-5.6 \pm 5.6_{stat} \pm 3.1_{syst}) \times 10^{-6}$, which is consistent with no variation over a look-back time of $\sim 11.4$ Gyrs.

An overview is presented of the H$_2$ quasar absorption method to search for a possible variation of the proton--electron mass ratio $μ=m_p/m_e$ on a cosmological time scale. Details of the analysis of astronomical spectra, obtained with large 8--10 m class optical telescopes, equipped with high-resolution echelle grating based spectrographs, are explained. The methods and results of the laboratory molecular spectroscopy of H$_2$, in particular the laser-based metrology studies for the determination of rest wavelengths of the Lyman and Werner band absorption lines, are reviewed. Theoretical physics scenarios delivering a rationale for a varying $μ$ will be discussed briefly, as well as alternative spectroscopic approaches to probe variation of $μ$, other than the H$_2$ method. Also a recent approach to detect a dependence of the proton-to-electron mass ratio on environmental conditions, such as the presence of strong gravitational fields, will be highlighted. Currently some 56 H$_2$ absorption systems are known and listed. Their usefulness to detect $μ$-variation is discussed, in terms of column densities and brightness of background quasar sources, along with future observational strategies. The astronomical observations of ten quasar systems analyzed so far set a constraint on a varying proton-electron mass ratio of $|Δμ/μ| < 5 \times 10^{-6}$ (3-$σ$), which is a null result, holding for redshifts in the range $z=2.0-4.2$. This corresponds to look-back times of 10--12.4 billion years into cosmic history. Attempts to interpret the results from these 10 H$_2$ absorbers in terms of a spatial variation of $μ$ are currently hampered by the small sample size and their coincidental distribution in a relatively narrow band across the sky.

Spectroscopy of hydrogen can be used for a search into physics beyond the Standard Model. Differences between the absorption spectra of H$_2$ as observed at high redshift and those measured in the laboratory can be interpreted in terms of possible variations of the proton-electron mass ratio. Investigation of some ten of such absorbers in the redshift range $z= 2.0-4.2$ yields a constraint of $|Δμ/μ|< 5 \times 10^{-6}$ at 3$σ$. Observation of H$_2$ from the photospheres of white dwarf stars inside our Galaxy delivers a constraint of similar magnitude on a dependence of $μ$ on a gravitational potential $10^4$ times as strong as on the Earth's surface. Laser-based precision measurements of dissociation energies, vibrational splittings and rotational level energies in H$_2$ molecules and their deuterated isotopomers HD and D$_2$ produce values for the rovibrational binding energies fully consistent with quantum ab initio calculations including relativistic and quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects. Similarly, precision measurements of high-overtone vibrational transitions of HD$^+$ ions, captured in ion traps and sympathetically cooled to mK temperatures, also result in transition frequencies fully consistent with calculations including QED corrections. Precision measurements of inter-Rydberg transitions in H$_2$ can be extrapolated to yield accurate values for level splittings in the H$_2^+$-ion. These comprehensive results of laboratory precision measurements on neutral and ionic hydrogen molecules can be interpreted to set bounds on the existence of possible fifth forces and of higher dimensions, phenomena describing physics beyond the Standard Model.

Accurate investigations of quantum level energies in molecular systems are shown to provide a test ground to constrain the size of compactified extra dimensions. This is made possible by the recent progress in precision metrology with ultrastable lasers on energy levels in neutral molecular hydrogen (H$_2$, HD and D$_2$) and the molecular hydrogen ions (H$_2^+$, HD$^+$ and D$_2^+$). Comparisons between experiment and quantum electrodynamics calculations for these molecular systems can be interpreted in terms of probing large extra dimensions, under which conditions gravity will become much stronger. Molecules are a probe of space-time geometry at typical distances where chemical bonds are effective, i.e. at length scales of an Å. Constraints on compactification radii for extra dimensions are derived within the Arkani-Hamed-Dimopoulos-Dvali framework, while constraints for curvature or brane separation are derived within the Randall-Sundrum framework. Based on the molecular spectroscopy of D$_2$ molecules and HD$^+$ ions, the compactification size for seven extra dimensions (in connection to M-theory defined in 11 dimensions) of equal size is shown to be limited to $R_7 < 0.6 μ$m. While limits on compactification sizes of extra dimensions based on other branches of physics are compared, the prospect of further tightening constraints from the molecular method is discussed.

Photoabsorption spectra of N$_2$ and CO were recorded at 900K, using the vacuum-ultraviolet Fourier-transform spectrometer at the DESIRS beamline of synchrotron SOLEIL. These high-temperature and high-resolution measurements allow for precise determination of line wavelengths, oscillator strengths, and predissociative line broadening of highly-excited rotational states with $J$ up to about 50, and also vibrational hot bands. In CO, the perturbation of $A\,{}^1Π-X\,{}^1Σ^+$ vibrational bands $(0,0)$ and $(1,0)$ were studied, as well as the transitions to perturbing optically-forbidden states $e\,{}^3Σ^-$, $d\,{}^3Δ$, $D\,{}^1Δ$ and $a'\,{}^3Σ^+$. In N$_2$, we observed line shifts and broadening in several $b\,{}^1Π_u-X\,{}^1Σ^+_g$ bands due to unobserved forbidden states of ${}^3Π_u$ symmetry. The observed state interactions are deperturbed and, for N$_2$, used to validate a coupled-channels model of the interacting electronic states. This data is appropriate for use in astrophysical or (exo-)planetary atmospheric applications where high temperatures are important and in future spectroscopic models of these molecules.

Recently an accurate analysis of absorption spectra of molecular hydrogen, observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, in the photosphere of white dwarf stars GD133 and GD29-38 was published in a Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 123002 (2014)], yielding a constraint on a possible dependence of the proton-electron mass ratio on a gravitational field of strength 10,000 times that at the Earth's surface. In the present paper further details of that study are presented, in particular a re-evaluation of the spectrum of the $B^1Σ_u^+ - X^1Σ_g^+ (v',v'')$ Lyman bands relevant for the prevailing temperatures (12,000 - 14,000 K) of the photospheres. An emphasis is on the calculation of so-called $K_i$-coefficients, that represent the sensitivity of each individual line to a possible change in the proton-electron mass ratio. Such calculations were performed by semi-empirical methods and by ab initio methods providing accurate and consistent values. A full listing is provided for the molecular physics data on the Lyman bands (wavelengths $λ_i$, line oscillator strengths $f_i$, radiative dam** rates $Γ_i$, and sensitivity coefficients $K_i$) as required for the analyses of H$_2$-spectra in hot dwarf stars. Accurate absolute level energies of the $B\,^1Σ^{+}_{u}$, $v=0-8, N$ and $EF\,^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}$, $v=0-21, N$ rovibrational quantum states of molecular deuterium are derived by combining results from a Doppler-free two-photon laser excitation study on several lines in the $EF\,{}^{1}Σ_{g}^{+}-X\,{}^{1}Σ_{g}^{+}$ (0,0) band, with results from a Fourier-transform spectroscopic emission study on a low-pressure hydrogen discharge. Level energy uncertainties as low as 0.0005 cm$^{-1}$ are obtained for some low-lying $E\,^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}$ inner-well rovibrational levels, while uncertainties for higher-lying rovibrational levels and those of the $F\,^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}$ outer-well states are nominally 0.005 cm$^{-1}$. Level energies of $B\,^1Σ^{+}_{u}$ rovibrational levels, for $v \leq 8$ and $N \leq 10$ are determined at an accuracy of 0.001 cm$^{-1}$. Computed wavelengths of D$_2$ Lyman transitions in the $B\,^1Σ^{+}_{u}-X\,^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}$ ($v,0$) bands are also tabulated for future applications.

The Lyman transitions of H$_2$, observed with the Hubble Space Telescope towards white dwarf stars that underwent a gravitational collapse, are compared to accurate laboratory spectra taking into account the high temperature conditions ($T \sim 13\,000$ K) of their photospheres. We derive sensitivity coefficients $K_i$ which define how the individual H$_2$ transitions shift due to $μ$-dependence. The spectrum of white dwarf star GD133 yields a $Δμ/μ$ constraint of $(-2.7\pm4.7_{\rm stat}\pm 0.2_{\rm sys})\times10^{-5}$ for a local environment of a gravitational potential $φ\sim10^4\ φ_\textrm{Earth}$, while that of G29$-$38 yields $Δμ/μ=(-5.8\pm3.8_{\rm stat}\pm 0.3_{\rm sys})\times10^{-5}$ for a potential of $2 \times 10^4$ $φ_\textrm{Earth}$.

Accurate experimental values for the vibrational ground tone or fundamental vibrational energy splitting of H$_2$, HD, and D$_2$ are presented. Absolute accuracies of $2\times10^{-4}$ cm$^{-1}$ are obtained from Doppler-free laser spectroscopy applied in a collisionless environment. The vibrational splitting frequencies are derived from the combination difference between separate electronic excitations from the $X^{1}Σ_{g}^{+}, v=0, J$ and $v=1, J$ vibrational states to a common $EF^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}, v=0, J$ state. The present work on rotational quantum states $J=1,2$ extends the results reported by Dickenson et al. on $J=0$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 193601]. The experimental procedures leading to this high accuracy are discussed in detail. A comparison is made with full \emph{ab initio} calculations encompassing Born-Oppenheimer energies, adiabatic and non-adiabatic corrections, as well as relativistic corrections and QED-contributions. The present agreement between the experimental results and the calculations provides a stringent test on the application of quantum electrodynamics in molecules. Furthermore, the combined experimental-theoretical uncertainty can be interpreted to provide bounds to new interactions beyond the Standard Model of Physics or fifth forces between hadrons.

A comparison is made between accurate experimental data and first-principles theoretical descriptions of the exotic systems within a quantum electrodynamical framework. The agreement between theory and experiment sets limits on a possible additional hadron-hadron interaction written in the form of a Yukawa potential $V_5(r)=α_5 \exp(-r/λ)/r$, with $λ$ representing the characteristic length scale associated with the mass of a hypothetical force-carrying particle via $λ=\hbar/(m_5c)$. The laser spectroscopic data of antiprotonic helium set a constraint of $α_5/α_{EM} < 10^{-8}$ for $λ< 1$ Å, while the binding energy of the muonic molecular deuterium ion delivers a constraint of $α_5/α_{EM} \sim 10^{-5}$ for $λ< 0.05$ Å, where $α_{EM}$ represents the strength of the electromagnetic interaction or the fine structure constant.

Highly accurate results from frequency measurements on neutral hydrogen molecules H_2, HD and D_2 as well as the HD^+ ion can be interpreted in terms of constraints on possible fifth-force interactions. Where the hydrogen atom is a probe for yet unknown lepton-hadron interactions, and the helium atom is sensitive for lepton-lepton interactions, molecules open the domain to search for additional long-range hadron-hadron forces. First principles calculations in the framework of quantum electrodynamics have now advanced to the level that hydrogen molecules and hydrogen molecular ions have become calculable systems, making them a search-ground for fifth forces. Following a phenomenological treatment of unknown hadron-hadron interactions written in terms of a Yukawa potential of the form V_5(r)=βexp(-r/λ)/r current precision measurements on hydrogenic molecules yield a constraint β< 1 \times 10^{-7} eVÅfor long-range hadron-hadron interactions at typical force ranges commensurate with separations of a chemical bond, i.e. λ~1 Åand beyond.

Salumbides et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 043005 (2011)]. The present paper presents a more detailed description of the methods and results. Furthermore, the paper serves as a step** stone towards a continuation of the previous study by extending the known level structure of the EF^1Σ^+_g state to highly excited rovibrational levels through Doppler-free two photon spectroscopy. Based on combination differences between vibrational levels in the ground state, and between three rotational branches (O, Q and S branches) assignments of excited EF^1Σ^+_g levels, involving high vibrational and rotational quantum numbers, can be unambiguously made. For the higher EF^1Σ^+_g levels, where no combination differences are available, calculations were performed using the multi-channel quantum defect method, for a broad class of vibrational and rotational levels up to J=19. These predictions were used for assigning high-J EF-levels and are found to be accurate within 5 cm^-1.

Laboratory wavelengths of the spectral lines of the A-X ($v$,0) bands for $v=0-9$ have been determined at an accuracy of $Δλ/λ=1.5 \times 10^{-7}$ through VUV Fourier-transform absorption spectroscopy, providing a comprehensive and accurate zero-redshift data set. For the (0,0) and (1,0) bands, two-photon Doppler-free laser spectroscopy has been applied at the $3 \times 10^{-8}$ accuracy level, verifying the absorption data. Sensitivity coefficients $K_μ$ for a varying $μ$ have been calculated for the CO A-X bands, so that an operational method results to search for $μ$-variation.

An extensive survey of the D2 absorption spectrum has been performed with the high-resolution VUV Fourier-transform spectrometer of the DESIRS beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron. The frequency range of 90 000-119 000 cm-1 covers the full depth of the potential wells of the B 1Σ+u, B' 1Σ+u, and C 1Πu electronic states up to the D(1s) + D(2\ell) dissociation limit. Improved level energies of rovibrational levels have been determined up to respectively v = 51, v = 13, and v = 20. Highest resolution is achieved by probing absorption in a molecular gas jet with slit geometry, as well as in a liquid helium cooled static gas cell, resulting in line widths of ~0.35 cm-1. Extended calibration methods are employed to extract line positions of D2 lines at absolute accuracies of 0.03 cm-1. The D1Πu and B" 1Σ+u electronic states correlate with the D(1s) + D(3\ell) dissociation limit, but support a few vibrational levels below the second dissociation limit, respectively v = 0-3 and v = 0-1, and are also included in the presented study. The complete set of resulting level energies is the most comprehensive and accurate data set for D2. The observations are compared with previous studies, both experimental and theoretical.

The observed absorption lines have been assigned to 25 bands and reduced to a set of transition energies, f values, and linewidths. This analysis has verified the predictions of a theoretical model of N2 that simulates its photoabsorption and photodissociation cross section by solution of an isotopomer independent formulation of the coupled-channel Schroedinger equation. The mass dependence of predissociation linewidths and oscillator strengths is clearly evident and many local perturbations of transition energies, strengths, and widths within individual rotational series have been observed.

UV frequency metrology has been performed on the a3Pi - X1Sigma+ (0,0) band of various isotopologues of CO using a frequency-quadrupled injection-seeded narrow-band pulsed Titanium:Sapphire laser referenced to a frequency comb laser. The band origin is determined with an accuracy of 5 MHz (delta ν/ ν= 3 * 10^-9), while the energy differences between rotational levels in the a3Pi state are determined with an accuracy of 500 kHz. From these measurements, in combination with previously published radiofrequency and microwave data, a new set of molecular constants is obtained that describes the level structure of the a3Pi state of 12C16O and 13C16O with improved accuracy. Transitions in the different isotopologues are well reproduced by scaling the molecular constants of 12C16O via the common mass-scaling rules. Only the value of the band origin could not be scaled, indicative of a breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Our analysis confirms the extreme sensitivity of two-photon microwave transitions between nearly-degenerate rotational levels of different Omega-manifolds for probing a possible variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio, μ=m_p/m_e, on a laboratory time scale.
