In this paper, we construct the associated vertex operator algebras for all $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories of rank one. We give a uniform presentation through free-field realizations, which turns out to be a particularly suitable framework for this task. The elementary building blocks of the construction are dictated by the low energy degrees of freedom on the Higgs branch, which are well understood for rank-one theories. We further analyze the interplay between Higgs and Coulomb data on the moduli space of vacua, which tightly constrain the overall structure of the free field realizations. Our results suggest a plausible bottom-up classification scheme for low-rank SCFTs incorporating vertex algebra techniques.

Using the large-charge expansion, we prove a necessary condition for a CFT to exhibit conformal symmetry breaking, under the assumption that a continuous global symmetry is ${\it also}$ broken on the moduli space: there must be a tower of charged local operators whose scaling dimensions are asymptotically linear in the charge. In supersymmetric theories with a continuous R-symmetry and a holomorphic moduli space, the existence of such a tower of operators follows trivially from a BPS condition: their scaling dimensions are then exactly linear in the R-charge. We illustrate the more general statement in several examples of three-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ CFTs, where the leading linear behavior receives nontrivial corrections. By considering a suitable scaling limit, we also relate the spectrum of states with large charge on the cylinder (isomorphic to local operators) to the spectrum of massive particles on the moduli space.

Conformal field theories that exhibit spontaneous breaking of conformal symmetry (a moduli space of vacua) must satisfy a set of bootstrap constraints, involving the usual data (scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients) as well as new data such as the spectrum of asymptotic states in the broken vacuum and form factors. The simplest bootstrap equation arises by expanding a two-point function of local operators in two channels, at short distance using the OPE and at large distance using the EFT in the broken vacuum. We illustrate this equation in what is arguably the simplest perturbative model that exhibits conformal symmetry breaking, namely the real $ABC$ model in $d = 4 -ε$ dimensions. We investigate the convergence properties of the bootstrap equation and check explicitly many of the non-trivial relations that it imposes on theory data.

In this paper, we focus on the effective field theory of massless pions coupled to background electromagnetic fields. We derive the full set of positivity constraints encoded in the system of 2 $\to$ 2 scattering amplitudes of pions and photons. This system probes a larger set of intermediate meson states, and is thus sensitive to intricate large $N$ selection rules, especially when supplemented with expectations from Regge theory. It also has access to the coefficient of the chiral anomaly. We find novel numerical bounds on several ratios of Wilson coefficients, in units of the rho mass. By matching the chiral anomaly with the microscopic theory, we also derive bounds that contain an explicit $N$ dependence.

There is a well-known map from 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) to 2d vertex operator algebras (VOAs). The 4d Schur index corresponds to the VOA vacuum character, and must be a solution with integral coefficients of a modular differential equation. This suggests a classification program for 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs that starts with modular differential equations and proceeds by imposing all known constraints that follow from the 4d $\to$ 2d map. This program becomes fully algorithmic once one specifies the $\mathrm{\textit{order}}$ of the modular differential equation and the $\mathrm{\textit{rank}}$ (complex dimension of the Coulomb branch) of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory. As a proof of concept, we apply the algorithm to the study of rank-two $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs whose Schur indices satisfy a fourth-order untwisted modular differential equation. Scanning over a large number of putative cases, only 15 satisfy all of the constraints imposed by our algorithm, six of which correspond to known 4d SCFTs. More sophisticated constraints can be used to argue against the existence of the remaining nine cases. Altogether, this indicates that our knowledge of such rank-two SCFTs is surprisingly complete.

It is a long-standing conjecture that any CFT with a large central charge and a large gap $Δ_{\text{gap}}$ in the spectrum of higher-spin single-trace operators must be dual to a local effective field theory in AdS. We prove a sharp form of this conjecture by deriving numerical bounds on bulk Wilson coefficients in terms of $Δ_{\text{gap}}$ using the conformal bootstrap. Our bounds exhibit the scaling in $Δ_{\text{gap}}$ expected from dimensional analysis in the bulk. Our main tools are dispersive sum rules that provide a dictionary between CFT dispersion relations and S-matrix dispersion relations in appropriate limits. This dictionary allows us to apply recently-developed flat-space methods to construct positive CFT functionals. We show how AdS$_{4}$ naturally resolves the infrared divergences present in 4D flat-space bounds. Our results imply the validity of twice-subtracted dispersion relations for any S-matrix arising from the flat-space limit of AdS/CFT.

We formulate a series of conjectures relating the geometry of conformal manifolds to the spectrum of local operators in conformal field theories in $d>2$ spacetime dimensions. We focus on conformal manifolds with limiting points at infinite distance with respect to the Zamolodchikov metric. Our central conjecture is that all theories at infinite distance possess an emergent higher-spin symmetry, generated by an infinite tower of currents whose anomalous dimensions vanish exponentially in the distance. Stated geometrically, the diameter of a non-compact conformal manifold must diverge logarithmically in the higher-spin gap. In the holographic context our conjectures are related to the Distance Conjecture in the swampland program. Interpreted gravitationally, they imply that approaching infinite distance in moduli space at fixed AdS radius, a tower of higher-spin fields becomes massless at an exponential rate that is bounded from below in Planck units. We discuss further implications for conformal manifolds of superconformal field theories in three and four dimensions.

We give a unified treatment of dispersive sum rules for four-point correlators in conformal field theory. We call a sum rule dispersive if it has double zeros at all double-twist operators above a fixed twist gap. Dispersive sum rules have their conceptual origin in Lorentzian kinematics and absorptive physics (the notion of double discontinuity). They have been discussed using three seemingly different methods: analytic functionals dual to double-twist operators, dispersion relations in position space, and dispersion relations in Mellin space. We show that these three approaches can be mapped into one another and lead to completely equivalent sum rules. A central idea of our discussion is a fully nonperturbative expansion of the correlator as a sum over Polyakov-Regge blocks. Unlike the usual OPE sum, the Polyakov-Regge expansion utilizes the data of two separate channels, while having (term by term) good Regge behavior in the third channel. We construct sum rules which are non-negative above the double-twist gap; they have the physical interpretation of a subtracted version of superconvergence sum rules. We expect dispersive sum rules to be a very useful tool to study expansions around mean-field theory, and to constrain the low-energy description of holographic CFTs with a large gap. We give examples of the first kind of applications, notably, we exhibit a candidate extremal functional for the spin-two gap problem.

We are able to write a closed form expression of the classical action thanks to a formalism that realizes eight supercharges off shell. We then investigate integrability of the spectral problem, by studying the spin-chain Hamiltonian in planar perturbation theory. While there are some structural indications that a suitably defined deformation might preserve integrability, we are unable to settle this question by our two-loop calculation; indeed up to this order we recover the integrable Hamiltonian of undeformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM due to accidental symmetry enhancement. We establish a precise relation between the modular bootstrap, used to constrain the spectrum of 2D CFTs, and the sphere packing problem in Euclidean geometry. The modular bootstrap bound for chiral algebra $U(1)^c$ maps exactly to the Cohn-Elkies linear programming bound on the sphere packing density in $d=2c$ dimensions. We also show that the analytic functionals developed earlier for the correlator conformal bootstrap can be adapted to this context. For $c=4$ and $c=12$, these functionals exactly reproduce the "magic functions" used recently by Viazovska [1] and Cohn et al. [2] to solve the sphere packing problem in dimensions 8 and 24. The same functionals are also applied to general 2D CFTs, with only Virasoro symmetry. In the limit of large central charge, we relate sphere packing to bounds on the black hole spectrum in 3D quantum gravity, and prove analytically that any such theory must have a nontrivial primary state of dimension $Δ_0 \lesssim c/8.503$.

We present free field realizations for the associated vertex operator algebras of a number of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories. Our constructions utilize an exceptionally small set of chiral bosons whose number matches the complex dimensionality of the Higgs branch of the superconformal field theory. In the case of theories whose Higgs branches support additional degrees of freedom (free vector multiplets or decoupled interacting SCFTs), the corresponding "free field realizations" include additional ingredients: symplectic fermions in the case of vector multiplets and a $C_2$ co-finite VOA in the case of a residual interacting SCFT. The resulting picture is that the associated VOA can be constructed from the Higgs branch effective theory via free field realization. Our constructions also provide a natural realization of the $R$-filtration of the associated VOA.

We develop an analytic approach to Boundary Conformal Field Theory (BCFT), focussing on the two-point function of a general pair of scalar primary operators. The resulting crossing equation can be thought of as a vector equation in an infinite-dimensional space ${\cal V}$ of analytic functions of a single complex variable. We argue that in a unitary theory, functions in ${\cal V}$ satisfy a boundedness condition in the Regge limit. We identify a useful basis for ${\cal V}$, consisting of bulk and boundary conformal blocks with scaling dimensions which appear in OPEs of the mean field theory correlator. Our main achievement is an explicit expression for the action of the dual basis (the basis of liner functionals on ${\cal V}$) on an arbitrary conformal block. The practical merit of our basis is that it trivializes the study of perturbations around mean field theory. Our results are equivalent to a BCFT version of the Polyakov bootstrap. Our derivation of the expressions for the functionals relies on the identification of the Polyakov blocks with (suitably improved) boundary and bulk Witten exchange diagrams in $AdS_{d+1}$. We also provide another conceptual perspective on the Polyakov block expansion and the associated functionals, by deriving a new Lorentzian OPE inversion formula for BCFT.

They are extensions of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ super Virasoro algebra obtained by introducing additional generators, in correspondence with the invariants of the complex reflection group $\mathcal{\mathsf{G}}$. If $\mathcal{\mathsf{G}}$ is a Coxeter group, the $\mathcal{N}=2$ super Virasoro algebra enhances to the (small) $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal algebra. With the exception of $\mathcal{\mathsf{G}} = \mathbb{Z}_2$, which corresponds to just the $\mathcal{N}=4$ algebra, these are non-deformable VOAs that exist only for a specific negative value of the central charge. We describe a free-field realization of $\mathcal{W}_{\mathcal{\mathsf{G}}}$ in terms of rank$(\mathcal{\mathsf{G}})$ $βγbc$ ghost systems, generalizing a construction of Adamovic for the $\mathcal{N}=4$ algebra at $c = -9$. If $\mathcal{\mathsf{G}}$ is a Weyl group, $\mathcal{W}_{\mathcal{\mathsf{G}}}$ is believed to coincide with the $\mathcal{N}=4$ VOA that arises from the four-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory whose gauge algebra has Weyl group $\mathcal{\mathsf{G}}$. More generally, if $\mathcal{\mathsf{G}}$ is a crystallographic complex reflection group, $\mathcal{W}_{\mathcal{\mathsf{G}}}$ is conjecturally associated to an $\mathcal{N}=3$ $4d$ superconformal field theory. The free-field realization allows to determine the elusive `$R$-filtration' of $\mathcal{W}_{\mathcal{\mathsf{G}}}$, and thus to recover the full Macdonald index of the parent $4d$ theory

We revisit the calculation of holographic correlators for eleven-dimensional supergravity on $AdS_7\times S^4$. Our methods rely entirely on symmetry and eschew detailed knowledge of the supergravity effective action. By an extension of the position space approach developed in [1, 2] for the $AdS_5\times S^5$ background, we compute four-point correlators of one-half BPS operators for identical weights $k=2, 3, 4$. The $k=2$ case corresponds to the four-point function of the stress-tensor multiplet, which was already known, while the other two cases are new. We also translate the problem in Mellin space, where the solution of the superconformal Ward identity takes a surprisingly simple form. We formulate an algebraic problem, whose (conjecturally unique) solution corresponds to the general one-half BPS four-point function.

We give a detailed account of the methods introduced in [1] to calculate holographic four-point correlators in IIB supergravity on $AdS_5 \times S^5$. Our approach relies entirely on general consistency conditions and maximal supersymmetry. We discuss two related methods, one in position space and the other in Mellin space. The position space method is based on the observation that the holographic four-point correlators of one-half BPS single-trace operators can be written as finite sums of contact Witten diagrams. We demonstrate in several examples that imposing the superconformal Ward identity is sufficient to fix the parameters of this ansatz uniquely, avoiding the need for a detailed knowledge of the supergravity effective action. The Mellin space approach is an "on-shell method" inspired by the close analogy between holographic correlators and flat space scattering amplitudes. We conjecture a compact formula for the four-point correlators of one-half BPS single-trace operators of arbitrary weights. Our general formula has the expected analytic structure, obeys the superconformal Ward identity, satisfies the appropriate asymptotic conditions and reproduces all the previously calculated cases. We believe that these conditions determine it uniquely.

Every four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theory comes equipped with an intricate algebraic invariant, the associated vertex operator algebra. The relationships between this invariant and more conventional protected quantities in the same theories have yet to be completely understood. In this work, we aim to characterize the connection between the Higgs branch of the moduli space of vacua (as an algebraic geometric entity) and the associated vertex operator algebra. Ultimately our proposal is simple, but its correctness requires the existence of a number of nontrivial null vectors in the vacuum Verma module of the vertex operator algebra. Of particular interest is one such null vector whose presence suggests that the Schur index of any ${\cal N}=2$ SCFT should obey a finite order modular differential equation. By way of the "high temperature" limit of the superconformal index, this allows the Weyl anomaly coefficient $a$ to be reinterpreted in terms of the representation theory of the associated vertex operator algebra. We illustrate these ideas in a number of examples including a series of rank-one theories associated with the "Deligne-Cvitanović exceptional series" of simple Lie algebras, several families of Argyres-Douglas theories, an assortment of class ${\cal S}$ theories, and ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills with $\mathfrak{su}(n)$ gauge group for small-to-moderate values of $n$.

We study the second-order phase transition in the $d$-dimensional Ising model with long-range interactions decreasing as a power of the distance $1/r^{d+s}$. For $s$ below some known value $s_*$, the transition is described by a conformal field theory without a local stress tensor operator, with critical exponents varying continuously as functions of $s$. At $s=s_*$, the phase transition crosses over to the short-range universality class. While the location $s_*$ of this crossover has been known for 40 years, its physics has not been fully understood, the main difficulty being that the standard description of the long-range critical point is strongly coupled at the crossover. In this paper we propose another field-theoretic description which, on the contrary, is weakly coupled near the crossover. We use this description to clarify the nature of the crossover and make predictions about the critical exponents. That the same long-range critical point can be reached from two different UV descriptions provides a new example of infrared duality.

${\cal N} =4$ super Yang-Mills theory admits \cite{Beem:2013sza} a protected subsector isomorphic to a two-dimensional chiral algebra, obtained by passing to the cohomology of a certain supercharge. In the large $N$ limit, we expect this chiral algebra to have a dual description as a subsector of IIB supergravity on $AdS_5 \times S^5$. This subsector can be carved out by a version of supersymmetric localization, using the bulk analog of the boundary supercharge. We illustrate this procedure in a simple model, the theory of an ${\cal N}=4$ vector multiplet in $AdS_5$, for which a convenient off-shell description is available. This model can be viewed as the simplest truncation of the full $AdS_5 \times S^5$ supergravity, in which case the vector multiplet should be taken in the adjoint representation of ${\mathfrak g}_F = \mathfrak {su}(2)_F$. Localization yields Chern-Simons theory on $AdS_3$ with gauge algebra ${\mathfrak g}_F$, whose boundary dual is the affine Lie algebra $\widehat {\mathfrak g}_F$. We comment on the generalization to the full bulk theory. We propose that the large $N$ limit of the chiral algebra of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM is again dual to Chern-Simons theory, with gauge algebra a suitable higher-spin superalgebra.

In this long overdue second installment, we continue to develop the conformal bootstrap program for ${\mathcal N}=4$ superconformal field theories in four dimensions via an analysis of the correlation function of four stress-tensor supermultiplets. We review analytic results for this correlator and make contact with the SCFT/chiral algebra correspondence of arXiv:1312.5344. We demonstrate that the constraints of unitarity and crossing symmetry require the central charge $c$ to be greater than or equal to $3/4$ in any interacting ${\mathcal N}=4$ SCFT. We apply numerical bootstrap methods to derive upper bounds on scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients for several low-lying, unprotected operators as a function of the central charge. We interpret our bounds in the context of ${\mathcal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theories, formulating a series of conjectures regarding the embedding of the conformal manifold --- parametrized by the complexified gauge coupling --- into the space of scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients. Our conjectures assign a distinguished role to points on the conformal manifold that are self-dual under a subgroup of the S-duality group. This paper contains a more detailed exposition of a number of results previously reported in arXiv:1304.1803 in addition to new results.

We investigate the structure of certain protected operator algebras that arise in three-dimensional N=4 superconformal field theories. We find that these algebras can be understood as a quantization of (either of) the half-BPS chiral ring(s). An important feature of this quantization is that it has a preferred basis in which the structure constants of the quantum algebra are equal to the OPE coefficients of the underlying superconformal theory. We identify several nontrivial conditions that the quantum algebra must satisfy in this basis. We consider examples of theories for which the moduli space of vacua is either the minimal nilpotent orbit of a simple Lie algebra or a Kleinian singularity. For minimal nilpotent orbits, the quantum algebras (and their preferred bases) can be uniquely determined. These algebras are related to higher spin algebras. For Kleinian singularities the algebras can be characterized abstractly - they are spherical subalgebras of symplectic reflection algebras - but the preferred basis is not easily determined. We find evidence in these examples that for a given choice of quantum algebra (defined up to a certain gauge equivalence), there is at most one choice of canonical basis. We conjecture that this is the case for general N=4 SCFTs.

We develop the conformal bootstrap program for six-dimensional conformal field theories with $(2,0)$ supersymmetry, focusing on the universal four-point function of stress tensor multiplets. We review the solution of the superconformal Ward identities and describe the superconformal block decomposition of this correlator. We apply numerical bootstrap techniques to derive bounds on OPE coefficients and scaling dimensions from the constraints of crossing symmetry and unitarity. We also derive analytic results for the large spin spectrum using the lightcone expansion of the crossing equation. Our principal result is strong evidence that the $A_1$ theory realizes the minimal allowed central charge $(c=25)$ for any interacting $(2,0)$ theory. This implies that the full stress tensor four-point function of the $A_1$ theory is the unique unitary solution to the crossing symmetry equation at $c=25$. For this theory, we estimate the scaling dimensions of the lightest unprotected operators appearing in the stress tensor operator product expansion. We also find rigorous upper bounds for dimensions and OPE coefficients for a general interacting $(2,0)$ theory of central charge $c$. For large $c$, our bounds appear to be saturated by the holographic predictions obtained from eleven-dimensional supergravity.

Simple examples of observables that are made accessible by this correspondence are the three-point functions of half-BPS operators. For the $A_n$ series, we compare our results at large $n$ to those obtained using the holographic dual description and find perfect agreement. We further find protected chiral algebras that appear on the worldvolumes of codimension two defects in $(2,0)$ SCFTs. We consider the problem of resumming the perturbative expansions for anomalous dimensions of low twist, non-BPS operators in four dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. The requirement of S-duality invariance imposes considerable restrictions on any such resummation. We introduce several prescriptions that produce interpolating functions on the upper half plane that are compatible with a subgroup of the full duality group. These lead to predictions for the anomalous dimensions at all points in the fundamental domain of the complex gauge coupling, and in particular at the duality-invariant values τ=i and τ=exp(iπ/3). For low-rank gauge groups, the predictions are compatible with the bounds derived by conformal bootstrap methods for these anomalous dimensions; within numerical errors, they are in good agreement with the conjecture that said bounds are saturated at a duality-invariant point. We also find that the anomalous dimensions of the lowest twist operators lie within an extremely narrow window around a straight line as we vary the moduli of the theory over the two dimensional fundamental domain.

At the threshold of exclusion, a particular operator spectrum appears to be singled out by the bootstrap constraints. For large values of the central charge, this extremal spectrum is compatible with that of supergravity in AdS_5 x S^5. For finite central charge, we conjecture that the extremal spectrum is that of N=4 SYM at an S-duality invariant value of the complexified gauge coupling.

We study the integrability properties of planar N=2 superconformal field theories in four dimensions. We show that the spin chain associated to the planar dilation operator of N=2 superconformal QCD fails to be integrable at two loops. In our analysis we focus on a closed SU(2|1) sector, whose two-loop spin chain we fix by symmetry arguments (up to a few undetermined coefficients). It turns out that the Yang-Baxter equation for magnon scattering is not satisfied in this sector. On the other hand, we suggest that the closed SU(2,1|2) sector, which exists in any N=2 superconformal gauge theory, may be integrable to all loops.

Abstract:
We study the constraints of crossing symmetry and unitarity for conformal field theories in the presence of a boundary, with a focus on the Ising model in various dimensions. We show that an analytic approach to the bootstrap is feasible for free-field theory and at one loop in the epsilon expansion, but more generally one has to resort to numerical methods. Using the recently developed linear programming techniques we find several interesting bounds for operator dimensions and OPE coefficients and comment on their physical relevance. We also show that the "boundary bootstrap" can be easily applied to correlation functions of tensorial operators and study the stress tensor as an example. In the appendices we present conformal block decompositions of a variety of physically interesting correlation functions.

Abstract:
The analytic properties of the N = 2 superconformal index are given a physical interpretation in terms of certain BPS surface defects, which arise as the IR limit of supersymmetric vortices. The residue of the index at a pole in flavor fugacity is interpreted as the index of a superconformal field theory without this flavor symmetry, but endowed with an additional surface defect. The residue can b…

The residue can be efficiently extracted by acting on the index with a difference operator of Ruijsenaars-Schneider type. By imposing the associativity constraints of S-duality, we are then able to evaluate the index of all generalized quiver theories of type A, for generic values of the three superconformal fugacities, with or without surface defects.

Abstract:
We evaluate the complete planar one-loop dilation operator of N=1 Super QCD, at the large N Bank-Zaks fixed point near the upper edge of the superconformal window. The spin-chain Hamiltonian turns out to be entirely fixed by the constraints of superconformal symmetry, as in N=4 Super Yang-Mills and in N=2 SuperConformal QCD.
