The magnetic tetrapyrrole molecules (such as porphyrins and phthalocyanines) with an active transition metal atom in their centre are currently intensively studied as prosperous potential elements of devices for high-density information storage and processing. It has been recently proved that by means of external factors one could induce two stable fully controllable molecular states. Therefore, hybrid systems consisting of such magnetic molecules and suitable carriers from the family of two-dimensional materials are often considered as promising highly scalable spintronic systems that could in the near future lead to novel industrial applications. Here, we perform the spin polarised density functional theory (DFT) studies of the hybrid system, which is the iron phthalocyanine molecule (FePc) on the top of the titanium carbide Ti$_2$C MXene layer. The most relevant issue in this part is the interaction between magnetic atoms: Ti from MXene substrate and iron from FePc. Four various magnetic configurations of FePc/Ti$_2$C were considered. The significant ferromagnetic interaction between the iron atom and the upper titanium layer plays important role in the reorientation of the iron atom's magnetic moment. We also analyse a model of the system in which the FePc molecule is in a quintet state (the ground state of an isolated molecule is a triplet). To get a better understanding of the physics of the FePc/Ti$_2$C hybrid system, we studied the hybrid systems with a single iron atom and non-magnetic H$_2$Pc on the Ti$_2$C layer, Fe/Ti$_2$C and H$_2$Pc/Ti$_2$C, respectively, which nicely explains the role of the Pc ligand in the FePc/Ti$_2$C hybrid system.

Transition metal phthalocyanines (TMPc's) are under intense scrutiny in the field of spintronics, as they may be promising storage devices. The simplicity and cheapness of such molecules increase their commercial potential. There is an active study of how the magnetic moment of the metal centre of such molecules can be changed. Here, we particularly consider the iron phthalocyanine molecule (FePc) on a graphene layer as a substrate. We study how graphene defects (the Stone-Wales defect, B-do**, N-do**, S-do**, and combined B (N, S)-doped Stone-Wales defects) change the FePc electronic structure. We present ab initio study of the systems, which is done using several approaches: based on periodic plane wave density functional theory (DFT), a linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) DFT with a cluster representation of graphene, and multiconfigurational methods with the pyrene molecule presented as a miniaturised graphene cluster. The treatment of the FePc/Graphene hybrid system using multiconfigurational methods was done for the first time. It was found that the hybrid systems with B- and N- do**s have quasi-degenerate ground states and it is necessary to go beyond the approximation of one Slater determinant.

It has been suggested that the enlarged spin susceptibility in topological insulators, described by Van Vleck's formalism, accounts for the ferromagnetism of bismuth-antimony topological chalcogenides doped with transition metal impurities. In contrast, earlier studies of HgTe and related topological systems pointed out that the interband analog of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction (the Bloembergen-Rowland mechanism) leads to antiferromagnetic coupling between pairs of localized spins. Here, we critically revisit these two approaches, show their shortcomings, and elucidate why the magnitude of the interband contribution is small even in topological systems. From the proposed theoretical approach and our computational studies of magnetism in Mn-doped HgTe and CdTe, we conclude that, in the absence of band carriers, the superexchange dominates, and its sign depends on the coordination and charge state of magnetic impurities rather than on the topological class of the host material.

The studies of electronic and magnetic properties of V-Pc molecule adsorbed onto Au(111) surface are based on ab-initio calculations in the framework of density functional theory. We compute adsorption energies, investigate interaction mechanisms between constituents of the hybrid system consisting of V-Pc molecule and Au surface, and determine geometry changes in the system, particularly in the grafted molecule. We find out that the energetically most stable configuration of the V-Pc/Au(111) occurs when V-Pc is grafted to the Au surface's fcc site, which leads to the reduction of the point group symmetry of the hybrid system in comparison to the free standing V-Pc molecule. Further, our studies reveal that the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the V-Pc change significantly after adsorption to the Au(111). Generally, these studies shed light on physical mechanisms of the V-Pc adsorption to metallic surfaces and open up new prospects for design of novel spintronic devices.

The silicon-vacancy (SiV) and nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are commonly regarded as prototypical defects for solid-state quantum information processing. Here we show that when silicon and nitrogen are simultaneously introduced into the diamond lattice these defects can strongly interact and form larger complexes. Nitrogen atoms strongly bind to Si and SiV centers and complex formation can occur. Using a combination of hybrid density functional theory (DFT) and group theory, we analyze the electronic structure and provide various useful physical properties, such as hyperfine structure, quasi-local vibrational modes, and zero-phonon line, to enable experimental identification of these complexes. We demonstrate that the presence of substitutional silicon adjacent to nitrogen significantly shifts the donor level toward the conduction band, resulting in an activation energy for the SiN center that is comparable to phosphorus. We also find that the neutral SiNV center is of particular interest due to its photon emission at $\sim$1530 nm, which falls within the C band of telecom wavelengths, and its paramagnetic nature. In addition, the optical transition associated with the SiNV$^0$ color center exhibits very small electron--phonon coupling (Huang--Rhys factor~=~0.78) resulting in high quantum efficiency (Debye-Waller factor = 46\%) for single-photon emission. These features render this new center very attractive for potential application in scalable quantum telecommunication networks.

Graphene - transition metal phthalocyanine (G-MPc) hybrid systems constitute promising platforms for densely-packed single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Here, we selected iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc) and investigated its interaction with pristine and defective graphene layers employing density functional theory. Our calculations indicate that thorough proper dehydrogenation of the benzol rings in the FePc molecule its adsorption to graphene is thermodynamically favorable. In general, the presence of anchoring sites on the graphene layer, i.e. point defects, additionally facilitates the adsorption of FePc, allowing one to achieve high density of SMMs per unit area. Using the combination of group theory, ligand field splitting, and the calculated PBE0 Kohn-Sham eigenvalue spectrum, we resolved the electronic structure and predicted the spin states of both, the isolated FePc and G-FePc hybrid systems. Regardless of adsorption site and the number of removed hydrogen atoms from the benzol rings of FePc, the magnetic moment of the SMM remains unchanged with respect to free FePc. These results should mediate a successful synthesis of densely-packed G-MPc systems and may open up new avenue in designing scalable graphene - SMMs systems for spintronics applications.

We present theoretical studies of morphology, stability, and electronic structure of monolayer hexagonal CBN alloys with rich content of h-BN and carbon concentration not exceeding 50 %. Our studies are based on the bond order type of the valence force field to account for the interactions between atomic constituents and Monte Carlo method with Metropolis algorithm to establish equilibrium distribution of atoms over the lattice. We find out that the phase separation into graphene and h-BN domains occurs in the majority of growth conditions. Only in N-rich growth conditions, it is possible to obtain quasi uniform distribution of carbon atoms over boron sublattice. We predict also that the energy gap in stoichiometric C$_x$(BN)$_{1-x}$ alloys exhibits extremely strong bowing.

The origin of nematicity, i.e., in-plane rotational symmetry breaking, and in particular the relative role played by spontaneous unidirectional ordering of spin, orbital, or charge degrees of freedom, is a challenging issue of magnetism, unconventional superconductivity, and quantum Hall effect systems, discussed in the context of doped semiconductor systems, such as Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As, Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$, and Ga(Al)As/Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As quantum wells, respectively. Here, guided by our experimental and theoretical results for In$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$As, we demonstrate that spinodal phase separation at the growth surface (that has a lower symmetry than the bulk) can lead to a quenched nematic order of alloy components, which then governs low temperature magnetic and magnetotransport properties, in particular the magnetoresistance anisotropy whose theory for the $C_{2v}$ symmetry group is advanced here. These findings, together with earlier data for Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As, show under which conditions anisotropic chemical phase separation accounts for the magnitude of transition temperature to a collective phase or merely breaks its rotational symmetry. We address the question to what extent the directional distribution of impurities or alloy components setting in during the growth may account for the observed nematicity in other classes of correlated systems.

We have studied two interchange layer systems, (i) free standing partly hydrogenated graphene (graphone), and (ii) graphone on the Nickel (111) surface, to assess various density functional theory based computational schemes incorporating van der Waals forces. The various van der Waals methods have been employed ranging from the semiempirical force-field-like correction of Grimme, through non-local van der Waals density functionals, up to the functionals involving exact exchange and the random phase approximation for the correlation. Generally, all computational schemes lead to a similar qualitative picture of hydrogen layer physisorption and chemisorption to graphene. The largest discrepancies between the approaches emerge for the energetics of the investigated systems. Our studies shed light on the physical mechanisms of graphene hydrogenation both in vacuum and in the proximity of metallic surface. In particular, it is revealed that the adsorption of hydrogen atoms affects the nature of the bonding between graphene and the Ni(111) surface, from the weak to strong semi-covalent bonding. On the other hand, it turns out that the adsorption of hydrogen layer to graphene is stronger in the presence of the metallic surface.

We study the dissociative adsorption of methane at the surface of graphene. Free energy profiles, which include activation energies for different steps of the reaction, are computed from constrained ab initio molecular dynamics. At 300 K, the reaction barriers are much lower than experimental bond dissociation energies of gaseous methane, strongly indicating that graphene surface acts as a catalyst of methane decomposition. On the other hand, the barriers are still much higher than on nickel surface. Methane dissociation therefore occurs at a higher rate on nickel than on graphene. This reaction is a prerequisite for graphene growth from precursor gas. Thus, the growth of the first monolayer should be a fast and efficient process while subsequent layers grow at diminished rate and in a more controllable manner. Defects may also influence reaction energetics. This is evident from our results, in which simple defects (Stone-Wales defect and nitrogen substitution) lead to different free energy landscapes at both dissociation and adsorption steps of the process.

We report on the evaluation of commercial electroless nickel phosphorus (NiP) coatings for ultracold neutron (UCN) transport and storage. The material potential of 50~$μ$m thick NiP coatings on stainless steel and aluminum substrates was measured to be $V_F = 213(5.2)$~neV using the time-of-flight spectrometer ASTERIX at the Lujan Center. The loss per bounce probability was measured in pinhole bottling experiments carried out at ultracold neutron sources at Los Alamos Neutron Science Center and the Institut Laue-Langevin. For these tests a new guide coupling design was used to minimize gaps between the guide sections. The observed UCN loss in the bottle was interpreted in terms of an energy independent effective loss per bounce, which is the appropriate model when gaps in the system and upscattering are the dominate loss mechanisms, yielding a loss per bounce of $1.3(1) \times 10^{-4}$. We also present a detailed discussion of the pinhole bottling methodology and an energy dependent analysis of the experimental results.

The effect of external static charging on borophenes - 2D boron crystals - is investigated by using first principles calculations. The influence of the excess negative charge on the stability of the 2D structures is examined using a very simple analysis of decomposition of the binding energy of a given boron layer into contributions coming from boron atoms that have different coordination numbers. This analysis is important to understand how the local neighbourhood of an atom influences the overall stability of the monolayer structure. The decomposition is done for the $α$-sheet and its related family of structures. From this analysis, we have found a preference for 2D boron crystals with very small or very high charges per atom. The structures with intermediate charges are energetically not favourable. We have also found a clear preference in terms of binding energy for the experimentally seen $γ$-sheet and $δ$-sheet structures that is almost independent on the considered excess of negative charge of the structures. On the other hand, we have shown that a model based solely on nearest-neighbour interactions, although instructive, is too simple to predict binding energies accurately.

We take into consideration wide range of concentrations (1-50%) and temperatures (70-1500 K), to provide more complete picture. For quantitative description of order, we determine Warren-Cowley Short Range Order (SRO) parameters for the first coordination shell. We study energetic, magnetic, and electronic properties of diluted substitutional Mn-pairs on the reconstructed $(001)$ GaAs surfaces. The studies are based on first-principles calculations in the framework of the density functional theory. We demonstrate that the stability of the systems strongly depends on the position, orientation, and the distance between the Mn-atoms constituting the pair. Independently of the considered surface reconstruction pattern, the Mn-pairs with Mn-atoms being the nearest neighbors (NN) on cationic sublattice turn out to be energetically more favorable than the pairs with the larger distance between the Mn-atoms. However, the preferential build-up orientation of the Mn-NN-pair depends on the surface reconstruction and is parallel either to $[110]$ or $[1\bar{1}0]$ crystallographic direction. We reveal also the mechanisms of the magnetic ordering of Mn-NN-pairs. The Mn-NN-pairs along the $[110]$ crystallographic direction exhibit always ferromagnetic alignment of Mn spins, whereas the spins in the Mn-NN-pairs along $[1\bar{1}0]$ direction are mostly anti-ferromagnetically aligned. In the electronic structure of the systems containing Mn-pairs with ferromagnetically aligned spins, we observe the valence band hole states in the neighborhood of Fermi energy. This indicates that the surface ferromagnetism in this prototype of dilute magnetic semiconductors can be explained in terms of the $p$-$d$ Zener model.

One of the most common analysis tasks in genomic research is to identify genes that are differentially expressed (DE) between experimental conditions. Empirical Bayes (EB) statistical tests using moderated genewise variances have been very effective for this purpose, especially when the number of biological replicate samples is small. The EB procedures can however be heavily influenced by a small number of genes with very large or very small variances. This article improves the differential expression tests by robustifying the hyperparameter estimation procedure. The robust procedure has the effect of decreasing the informativeness of the prior distribution for outlier genes while increasing its informativeness for other genes. This effect has the double benefit of reducing the chance that hypervariable genes will be spuriously identified as DE while increasing statistical power for the main body of genes. The robust EB algorithm is fast and numerically stable. The procedure allows exact small-sample null distributions for the test statistics and reduces exactly to the original EB procedure when no outlier genes are present. Simulations show that the robustified tests have similar performance to the original tests in the absence of outlier genes but have greater power and robustness when outliers are present. The article includes case studies for which the robust method correctly identifies and downweights genes associated with hidden covariates and detects more genes likely to be scientifically relevant to the experimental conditions. The new procedure is implemented in the limma software package freely available from the Bioconductor repository.

Electronic and magnetic properties of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As, obtained from first-principles calculations employing the hybrid HSE06 functional, are presented for $x=6.25\%$ and $12.5\%$ under pressures ranging from 0 to 15 GPa. In agreement with photoemission experiments at ambient pressure, we find for $x=6.25\%$ that non-hybridized Mn-3$d$ levels and Mn-induced states reside about 5 and 0.4 eV below the Fermi energy, respectively. For elevated pressures, the Mn-3$d$ levels, Mn-induced states, and the Fermi level shift towards higher energies, however, the position of the Mn-induced states relative to the Fermi energy remains constant due to hybridization of the Mn-3$d$ levels with the valence As-4$p$ orbitals. We also evaluate, employing Monte Carlo simulations, the Curie temperature ($T_{\rm C}$). At zero pressure, we obtain $T_{\rm C}=181$K, whereas the pressure-induced changes in $T_{\rm C}$ are d$T_{\rm C}$/d$p=+4.3$K/GPa for $x=12.5\%$ and an estimated value of d$T_{\rm C}$/d$p\approx+2.2$K/GPa for $x=6.25\%$ under pressures up to 6 GPa. The determined values of d$T_{\rm C}$/d$p$ compare favorably with d$T_{\rm C}$/d$p=+$(2-3) K/GPa at $p\leq1.2$GPa found experimentally and estimated within the $p$-$d$ Zener model for Ga$_{0.93}$Mn$_{0.07}$As in the regime where hole localization effects are of minor importance [M. Millikelvin magnetotransport studies are carried out on heavily $n$-doped wurtzite GaN:Si films grown on semi-insulating GaN:Mn buffer layers by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. The dependency of the conductivity on magnetic field and temperature is interpreted in terms of theories that take into account disorder-induced quantum interference of one-electron and many-electron self-crossing trajectories. The Rashba parameter $α_{\text{R}}\,=\,(4.5 \pm 1)$ meV$Å$ is determined, and it is shown that in the previous studies of electrons adjacent to GaN/(Al,Ga)N interfaces, bulk inversion asymmetry was dominant over structural inversion asymmetry. The comparison of experimental and theoretical values of $α_{\text{R}}$ across a series of wurtzite semiconductors is presented as a test of current relativistic ab initio computation schemes. It is found that electron-electron scattering with small energy transfer accounts for low temperature decoherence in these systems.

Owing to the variety of possible charge and spin states and to the different ways of coupling to the environment, paramagnetic centres in wide band-gap semiconductors and insulators exhibit a strikingly rich spectrum of properties and functionalities, exploited in commercial light emitters and proposed for applications in quantum information. Here we demonstrate, by combining synchrotron techniques with magnetic, optical and \emph{ab initio} studies, that the codo** of GaN:Mn with Mg allows to control the Mn$^{n+}$ charge and spin state in the range $3\le n\le 5$ and $2\ge S\ge 1$. According to our results, this outstanding degree of tunability arises from the formation of hitherto concealed cation complexes Mn-Mg$_k$, where the number of ligands $k$ is pre-defined by fabrication conditions. The properties of these complexes allow to extend towards the infrared the already remarkable optical capabilities of nitrides, open to solotronics functionalities, and generally represent a fresh perspective for magnetic semiconductors.

Magnetic properties of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$N are studied theoretically by employing a tight binding approach to determine exchange integrals $J_{ij}$ characterizing the coupling between Mn spin pairs located at distances $R_{ij}$ up to the 16th cation coordination sphere in zinc-blende GaN. It is shown that for a set of experimentally determined input parameters there are no itinerant carriers and the coupling between localized Mn$^{3+}$ spins in GaN proceeds via superexchange that is ferromagnetic for all explored $R_{ij}$ values. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations serve to evaluate the magnitudes of Curie temperature $T_\mathrm{C}$ by the cumulant crossing method. The theoretical values of $T_\mathrm{C}(x)$ are in quantitative agreement with the experimental data that are available for Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$N with randomly distributed Mn$^{3+}$ ions with the concentrations $0.01 \leq x \leq 0.1$.

The critical behavior of this dilute magnetic insulator shows strong deviations from the magnetically clean case (x = 1), in particular, (i) an apparent breakdown of the Harris criterion; (ii) a non-monotonic crossover in the values of the susceptibility critical exponent gamma_eff between the high temperature and critical regimes, and (iii) a smearing of the critical region, which can be explained either by the Griffiths effects or by macroscopic inhomogeneities in the spin distribution with a variance Delta x = (0.2 +/- 0.1)%.

We present a theoretical study of the structural and electronic properties of graphene monolayer functionalized with boron and nitrogen atoms substituting carbon atoms. Our study is based on the ab initio calculations in the framework of the density functional theory. We calculate the binding energies of the functionalized systems, changes in the morphology caused by functionalization, and further the band gap energy as a function of the concentration of dopants. Moreover, we address the problem of possible clustering of dopants at a given concentration. We define the clustering parameter to quantify the dependence of the properties of the functionalized systems on the distribution of B/N atoms.
We show that clustering of B/N atoms in graphene is energetically unfavorable in comparison to the homogenous distribution of dopants. For most of the structures, we observe a nonzero energy gap that is only slightly dependent on the concentration of the substituent atoms.

We present exemplary results of extensive studies of mechanical, electronic and transport properties of covalent functionalization of graphene monolayers (GML) with -NH2. We report new results of ab initio studies of covalent functionalization of GML with -NH2 groups up to 12.5% concentration. Our studies are performed in the framework of the density functional theory (DFT) and non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF). We discuss the stability (adsorption energy), elastic moduli, electronic structure, band gaps, and effective electron masses as a function of the density of the adsorbed molecules. We also show the conductance and I(V) characteristic of these systems. Generally, the stability of the functionalized graphene layers decreases with the growing concentration of attachments and we determine the critical density of the molecules that can be chemisorbed on the surface of GLs. Because of local deformations of GLs and sp3 rehybridization of the bonds induced by fragments, elastic moduli decrease with increasing number of groups. Simultaneously, we observe that the functionalizing molecules stretch the graphenes lattice, the effect being more pronounced for higher concentration of adsorbed molecules. We find out that the GLs functionalization leads in many cases to the opening of the graphene band gap (up to 0.5302 eV for 12.5% concentration) and can be therefore utilized in graphene devices. The new HOMO and LUMO originate mostly from the impurity bands induced by the functionalization and they exhibit parabolic dispersion with electron effective masses comparable to ones in silicon or gallium nitride.

It is shown that the Si-rich alloys are more resistive to structural disorder and as a consequence Si stabilizes the $L2_1$ structure. Si alloying changes position of the Fermi level, pushing it into the gap of the minority spin-band. It is also shown that the hyperfine field on Co nuclei increases with the Si concentration, and this increase originates mostly from the changes in the electronic density of the valence electrons.

We consider simple organic molecules -NH, -NH2, -CH2, -CH3, -OH attached to CNTs' surface at various densities. The studies are based on the first principles calculations in the framework of density functional theory. We have determined the changes in the geometry and the elastic moduli of the functionalized CNTs as a function of the density of adsorbed molecules. It turns out that elastic moduli diminish with increasing concentration of adsorbands, however, the functionalized CNTs remain strong enough to be suitable for reinforcement of composites. The strongest effect is observed for CNTs functionalized with -CH2 radical, where the Young's modulus of the functionalized system is by 30% smaller than in the pristine CNTs.

We present results of extensive theoretical studies concerning stability, morphology, and band structure of single wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) covalently functionalized by -CHn(for n=2,3,4),-NHn(for n=1,2,3,4),-COOH and -OH groups. Our studies are based on ab initio calculations in the framework of the density functional theory. We determine the dependence of the binding energies on the concentration of the adsorbed molecules, critical densities of adsorbed molecules, global and local changes in the morphology, and electronic structure paying particular attention to the functionalization induced changes of the band gaps. These studies reveal physical mechanisms that determine stability and electronic structure of those systems and also provide valuable theoretical predictions relevant for application. Functionalization of CNTs causes generally their elongation and locally sp2 -> sp3 rehybridization in the neighborhood of chemisorbed groups. For adsorbants making particularly strong covalent bonds with the CNTs(-CH2), we observe formation of the 5/7 defects. In CNTs functionalized with -CH2,-NH4, and -OH, we determine critical density of molecules that could be covalently bound to CNTs. Functionalization of CNTs can be utilized for band gap engineering and also lead to changes in their metallic/semiconductor character. In semiconducting CNTs, adsorbants such as -CH3,-NH2,-OH and -COOH, introduce 'impurity' bands in the band gap of pristine CNTs. In the case of -CH3,-NH2, the induced band gaps are typically smaller than in the pure CNT and depend strongly on the concentration of adsorbants. However, functionalization of semiconducting CNTs with -OH leads to the metallization of CNTs. On the other hand, the functionalization of semi-metallic (9,0)CNT with -CH2 causes the increase of the band gap and induces semi-metal to semiconductor transition.

The effect of Mg codo** and its deposition mode on the Fe distribution in (Ga,Fe)N layers grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy is investigated. Both homogeneously- and digitally-Mg codoped samples are considered and contrasted to the case of (Ga,Fe)N layers obtained without any codo** by shallow impurities. The structural analysis of the layers by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and by high-resolution- and synchrotron x-ray diffraction gives evidence of the fact that in the case of homogenous-Mg do**, Mg and Fe competitively occupy the Ga-substitutional cation sites, reducing the efficiency of Fe incorporation. Accordingly, the character of the magnetization is modified from ferromagnetic-like in the non-codoped films to paramagnetic in the case of homogeneous Mg codo**. The findings are discussed vis-`a-vis theoretical results obtained by ab initio computations, showing only a weak effect of codo** on the pairing energy of two Fe cations in bulk GaN. However, according to these computations, codo** reverses the sign of the paring energy of Fe cations at the Ga-rich surface, substantiating the view that the Fe aggregation occurs at the growth surface. In contrast to the homogenous deposition mode, the digital one is found to remarkably promote the aggregation of the magnetic ions. The Fe-rich nanocrystals formed in this way are distributed non-uniformly, giving reason for the observed deviation from a standard superparamagnetic behavior.

A first-principles DFT-GGA+U study of the do** of GaN with Cr, Mn, or Fe confirms a strong tendency for the formation of embedded clusters occupying Ga sites of the wurtzite and zinc blende phases of GaN. Within the employed computation model, the tendency for aggregation is larger for Cr and Mn than for Fe. In contrast to previous DFT-GGA calculations, we predict a ferromagnetic ordering of the Cr and Mn clusters having more than two atoms while the Fe clusters are all antiferromagnetic. We have also investigated the magnetic ordering of nearest-neighboring ionic pairs that substitute gallium atoms at the (0001) wz-GaN surface. We find that Fe dopants tend to aggregate, whereas there is a repulsive interaction in the case of Cr and Mn. Nearest neighbor Mn and Fe pairs are coupled antiferromagnetically whereas the Cr pair is coupled ferromagnetically. The relevance of our finding to recent experimental findings is discussed.

The question whether the Anderson-Mott localisation enhances or reduces magnetic correlations is central to the physics of magnetic alloys. Particularly intriguing is the case of (Ga,Mn)As and related magnetic semiconductors, for which diverging theoretical scenarios have been proposed. Here, by direct magnetisation measurements we demonstrate how magnetism evolves when the density of carriers mediating the spin-spin coupling is diminished by the gate electric field in metal/insulator/semiconductor structures of (Ga,Mn)As. Our findings show that the channel depletion results in a monotonic decrease of the Curie temperature, with no evidence for the maximum expected within the impurity-band models. We find that the transition from the ferromagnetic to the paramagnetic state proceeds via the emergence of a superparamagnetic-like spin arrangement. This implies that carrier localisation leads to a phase separation into ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic regions, which we attribute to critical fluctuations in the local density of states, specific to the Anderson-Mott quantum transition.

Total cross sections for the quasi-free pn --> pn eta reaction in the range from the kinematical threshold up to 20 MeV excess energy have been determined. At threshold they exceed corresponding cross sections for the pp --> pp eta reaction by a factor of about three in contrast to the factor of six established for higher excess energies. To large extent, the observed decrease of the ratio sigma(pn --> pn eta)/sigma(pp --> pp eta) towards threshold may be assigned to the different energy dependence of the proton-proton and proton-neutron final state interactions.
The experiment has been conducted using a proton beam of the cooler synchrotron COSY and a cluster jet deuteron target. The proton-neutron reactions were tagged by the spectator proton whose momentum was measured for each event. Protons and neutron outgoing from the pn --> pn eta reaction have been registered by means of the COSY-11 facility, an apparatus dedicated for threshold meson production.

Our predictions for these compounds are based on detailed ab initio calculations of strain-energy and strain-stress relations in the framework of the density functional theory. To judge the computational accuracy, we compare the ab initio calculated results for $C_{ijk}$ with experimental data available for Si and GaAs. We also underline the relation of the third-order elastic constants to other quantities characterizing anharmonic behaviour of materials, such as pressure derivatives of the second-order elastic constants and the mode Grüneisen constants for long-wavelength acoustic modes.

The low emittance and small momentum spread of the proton and deuteron beams of the Cooler Synchrotron COSY combined with the high mass resolution of the COSY-11 detection system permit to study the creation of mesons in the nucleon-nucleon interaction down to the fraction of MeV with respect to the kinematical threshold. At such small excess energies, the ejectiles possess low relative momenta and are predominantly produced with the relative angular momentum equal to zero. Taking advantage of these conditions we have performed investigations aiming to determine the mechanism of the production of eta and eta' mesons in the collision of hadrons as well as the hadronic interaction of these mesons with nucleons and nuclei. In this proceedings we address the ongoing studies of the spin and isospin dependence for the production of the eta and eta' mesons in free and quasi-free nucleon-nucleon collisions. New results on the spin observables for the vec(p)p --> pp eta reaction, combined with the previously determined total cross section isospin dependence, reveal a statistically significant indication that the excitation of the nucleon to the S11(1535) resonance, the process which intermediates the production of the eta meson in the nucleon-nucleon interactions, is predominantly due to the exchange of the pi meson between the colliding nucleons.

Abstract:
Information about the production mechanism of the eta meson in proton-proton collisions can be inferred by confronting the experimental studies on the analysing power for the p(pol)p --> pp eta reaction with the theoretical predictions of this observable. Results show that the predictions of pure pseudoscalar- or vector meson exchange model are insufficient to describe the analysing powers.

The obtained results show how much the spherical 4x4 kp model [Nguyen, Shchelushkin, and Brataas, cond-mat/0601436] overestimates DWR in the adiabatic limit, and reveal the dependence of DWR on the magnetization profile and crystallographic orientation of the wall.

The high statistics data from the pp -> ppeta reaction measurement, delivered by the COSY-11 collaboration, are now being evaluated using the correlation femtoscopy technique. This method is based on the relative momentum correlations of two emitted protons and may permit determination of the size of the reaction volume. For the very first time, we apply an intensity interferometry technique to study the mechanism of the meson production via the nucleon-nucleon interaction close to the kinematical threshold. We invented a method to determine correlation function for the ppeta system free from the physical multi-pion production background. We show the comparison of experimental results with theoretical predictions and appraise the accuracy achieved for the determination of the size of the emission source.

The data were taken during a slow ram** of the COSY internal deuteron beam scattered on a proton target. The 3He ejectiles were registered with the COSY-11 detection setup. The ongoing data analysis should deliver high precision data for the dp --> 3He eta total and differential cross sections for the excess energies in the range from threshold up to 9 MeV. The preliminary excitation function for the reaction dp --> 3He pi0 does not show any structure which could originate from the decay of 3He-eta bound state. We present also a threshold excitation curve for the dp --> 3He X channel. Contrary to corresponding results from SATURNE we see no cusp in the vicinity of the eta threshold.
