Employing \emph{VI} images of NGC 2419 acquired over 17 years, light curves for most of the known variables in the field of the cluster are produced. A cluster membership analysis for about 3100 stars in the cluster field with proper motions from $Gaia$-DR3, revealed the presence of member stars as far as 140 pc from the cluster center and enabled the construction of a cleaner CMD free of field stars. It was found that RRab and RRc stars share the inter-order region in the instability strip, which is unusual for OoII clusters. Theoretical considerations confirm that Pop II cepheids are descendants of extreme ZAHB blue tail stars with very thin envelopes of about 10\% of the total mass. Member RR Lyrae stars were employed to calculate independent estimates of the mean cluster metallicity and distance; we found [Fe/H]$_{\rm UV}= -1.90 \pm 0.27$ and $D=86.3 \pm 5.0$ kpc from the RRab and [Fe/H]$_{\rm UV}= -1.88 \pm 0.30$ and $D=83.1 \pm 8.1$ kpc from the RRc light curves.

Defects in atomically thin materials can drive new functionalities and expand applications to multifunctional systems that are monolithically integrated. An ability to control formation of defects during the synthesis process is an important capability to create practical deployment opportunities. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$), a two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting material harbors intrinsic defects that can be harnessed to achieve tuneable electronic, optoelectronic, and electrochemical devices. However, achieving precise control over defect formation within monolayer MoS$_2$, while maintaining the structural integrity of the crystals remains a notable challenge. Here, we present a one-step, in-situ defect engineering approach for monolayer MoS$_2$ using a pressure dependent chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process. Monolayer MoS$_2$ grown in low-pressure CVD conditions (LP-MoS$_2$) produces sulfur vacancy (Vs) induced defect rich crystals primarily attributed to the kinetics of the growth conditions. Conversely, atmospheric pressure CVD grown MoS$_2$ (AP-MoS$_2$) passivates these Vs defects with oxygen. This disparity in defect profiles profoundly impacts crucial functional properties and device performance. AP-MoS$_2$ shows a drastically enhanced photoluminescence, which is significantly quenched in LP-MoS$_2$ attributed to in-gap electron donor states induced by the Vs defects. However, the n-do** induced by the Vs defects in LP-MoS$_2$ generates enhanced photoresponsivity and detectivity in our fabricated photodetectors compared to the AP-MoS$_2$ based devices. Defect-rich LP-MoS$_2$ outperforms AP-MoS$_2$ as channel layers of field-effect transistors (FETs), as well as electrocatalytic material for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This work presents a single-step CVD approach for in-situ defect engineering in monolayer MoS$_2$ and presents a pathway to control defects in other monolayer material systems.

A five year CCD photometric \emph{VI} time-series of NGC 7006 is employed to perform a detailed analysis of the known population of variable stars. In the process we have corrected inconsistent classifications, sky coordinates and found ten new cluster member variables. An independent reddening estimate with a value $E(B-V)=0.08\pm0.05$ is made. Using Fourier decompositions of RR Lyrae light curves and well established calibrations, the cluster mean metallicity and distance [Fe/H]$_{\rm ZW}= -1.53\pm0.15$ and $41.2\pm1.4$ kpc are estimated based on an extended sample of cluster member RRab stars. Using the $Gaia$-DR3 data we performed an extensive membership analysis which leads to a clean Colour-Magnitude diagram, and hence to the identification of variables that are likely field stars, and to considerations on the variables distribution in the Horizontal Branch (HB). A double mode RR Lyrae and three CW star are discussed. The origin of CW stars from precursors in the blue tail of the HB with very thin ($\sim 0.06 \pm 0.01 M_{\odot}$) envelopes is argued. Our models indicate that the Main Sequence predecessor of RR Lyrae stars had a mass of 0.82-0.85 $M_{\odot}$ and lost about 25-35\% of its mass during the red giant branch events before settling in the HB some 12-13.5 Gyrs later.

Time-series VI CCD photometry of the globular cluster M10 (NGC 6254) is employed to perform a detailed identification, inspection of their light curves, their classification and their cluster membership, of all the known variables reported up to 2018. The membership analysis is based on the Gaia-DR2 positions and proper motions. The metallicity of the cluster is estimated based on the sole RRc star known in the cluster. The Fourier decomposition of its light curve leads to [Fe/H]ZW=-1:59 $\pm$ 0:23 dex. The mean cluster distance, estimated by several independent methods is 5.0 $\pm$ 0.3 kpc. A multi-approach search in a region of about 10x10 arcmin2 around the cluster revealed three new variables, one SX Phe (V35) and two sinusoidal variables on the red giant branch of unclear classification (V36,V37). Modelling the HB stars is very sensitive to the stellar hydrogen shell mass, which surrounds the 0.50 M$_\odot$ helium core. To match the full stretch of the HB population, a range of total mass of 0.56 to 0.62 M$_\odot$ is required. These models support a distance of 5.35 kpc and an age of about 13 Gyrs, and hints to some individual variation of the mass loss on the uppper RGB, perhaps caused by the presence of closed magnetic field in red giants.

We present an analysis of $\emph{VI}$ CCD time series photometry of globular cluster NGC 6712. Our main goal is to study the variable star population as indicators of the cluster mean physical parameters. We employed the Fourier decomposition of RR Lyrae light curves to confirm that $[\rm Fe/H]_{UVES} = -1.0 \pm 0.05$ is a solid estimate. We estimated the reddening to the cluster as $E(B-V)$ = 0.35 $\pm$ 0.04 from the RRab stars colour curves. The distance to the cluster was estimated using three independent methods which yielded a weighted mean distance $\big < d \big>$ = 8.1 $\pm$ 0.2 kpc. The distribution of RRab and RRc stars on the HB shows a clear segregation around the first overtone red edge of the instability strip, which seems to be a common feature in OoI-type cluster with a very red horizontal branch. We carried out a membership analysis of 60,447 stars in our FoV using the data from $Gaia$-DR2 and found 1529 likely members; we possess the light curves of 1100 among the member stars. This allowed us to produce a clean colour-magnitude diagram, consistent with an age of 12 Gyrs, and enabled us to discover close unresolved contaminants for several variable stars. From the proper motion analysis we found evidence of non-member stars in the FoV of the cluster being tidally affected by the gravitational pull of the bulge of the Galaxy. We found that the RRab variable V6, shows a previously undetected Blazhko effect. Finally, we report sixteen new variables of the EW-type (9) and SR-type (7).

From the Fourier decomposition of the light curves of RRab and RRc stars we found an average metallicity of [Fe/H]zw = -1.58 $\pm$ 0.09. The distance to the cluster was estimated as 7.1 $\pm$ 0.1 kpc from independent methods related to the variable star families RR Lyrae, SX Phe and W Virginis, from the luminosity of the theoretical ZAHB and from the orbit solution of a newly discovered contact binary star. The RR Lyrae pulsation modes are segregated by the red edge of the first overtone instability strip in this OoII type cluster. A membership analysis of 52,800 stars in the field of the cluster is presented based on \textit{Gaia}-DR2 proper motions which enabled the recognition of 23,070 likely cluster members, for 7,630 of which we possess $VI$ photometry. The identification of member stars allowed the construction of a clean CMD and a proper ZAHB and isochrone fitting, consistent with a reddening, age and distance of 0.02 mag, 12.6 Gyrs and 7.1 kpc respectively. We report seven new variables; one RRc, two SX Phe stars, three SR and one contact binary. V31 presents double-mode nature and we confirm V36 as RRd. Fifteen variable star candidates are also reported. The analysis of eighteen stars in the field of the cluster, reported as RR Lyrae from the $Gaia$-DR2 data base reveals that at least seven are not variable. We noted the presence of a high velocity star in the field of the cluster.

A search of variable stars in the field of view of our images revealed the variability of a red giant cluster member and of three probably non-member stars; two RRab stars and one W Virginis star or CW. The GAIA proper motions of member stars in Pal 13 show a significant scatter, consistent with the scenario of the cluster being tidally stripped.

We present an analysis of VI CCD time-series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 6171. The main goal is to determine individual physical parameters for single-mode RR Lyrae stars present in the field of view of our images, by means of light curve Fourier decomposition and well-established calibrations and zero-points. This leads to the estimation of the mean values of the metallicity and distance for the parental cluster. From the RRab stars we find [Fe/H]ZW = -1.33 +- 0.12 and a distance d = 5.3 +- 0.3 kpc and from the RRc stars we find [Fe/H]ZW = -1.02 +- 0.19 and a distance d = 5.3 +- 0.2 kpc. Independent methods, such as the P-L relations for RRab and SX Phe stars enable the estimation of a weighted average distance to the cluster of 5.4 +- 0.1 kpc. We confirm the amplitude modulations of the Blazhko type of five RRab and the non-membership of V21 to the cluster. The colour-magnitude diagram is consistent with an age of 11 Gyrs. The distribution of RRab and RRc stars seems well segregated around the first overtone red edge of the instability strip. This positions NGC 6171 among OoI type clusters where the pulsating modes are neatly separated in the HB. We report two new irregular variables of the Lb type.

In this paper, the first science results using HESP, we present a detailed analysis of their chemical abundances. Both the stars exhibit under-abundances in their neutron-capture elements, while one of them, \sdssonethree, is clearly enhanced in carbon. Lithium was also detected in this star at a level of about A(Li) = 1.95. The spectra were obtained over a span of 6-24 months, and indicate that both stars could be members of binary systems. We compare the elemental abundances derived for these two stars along with other carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) and EMP stars, in order to understand the nature of their parent supernovae. We find that CEMP-no stars and EMP dwarfs exhibit very similar trends in their lithium abundances at various metallicities. We also find indications that CEMP-no stars have larger abundances of Cr and Co at a given metallicity, compared to EMP stars.

The mean metallicity and distance estimated using the RRc stars are [Fe/H]$_{ZW}=-1.72\pm0.15$ and $19.05\pm0.46$ kpc respectively. The star V18, whose variability has been previously in dispute, is confirmed to be a variable of the SR type with a period of about 24.8d, and it has been used to get and independent distance estimate of the cluster. It is observed that the RRab and RRc stars do not share the inter-mode region in the horizontal branch. The cluster can be classified as of intermediate Oosterhoff type. Its horizontal branch structure and metallicity make a good case for extragalactic origin. It follows the distribution of Oo~I type globular clusters in the $M_V-$[Fe/H] plane, as depicted from the RRc stars.

Based on photometric data obtained between 1935 and 2017, $O-C$ diagrams were built for 22 RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster NGC 6171, leading to the discovery of secular period changes in 4 variables for which we have calculated their period change rates $β$. In contrast we find that $82\%$ of the sample stars have stable periods over the last 82 years. For the stable period stars, the whole data base has been employed to refine their periods. Among the period changing stars, three (V10, V12 and V16) have decreasing periods larger than expected from stellar evolution. Despite these individual cases of significant period change rate, the golbal average of the measured period changes in the cluster is basically zero, in consonance with theoretical predictions for clusters with redder horizontal branches. The hitherto unpublished observations, now brought into public domain, are employed to calculate a set of times of maximum light which are used in the present analysis.

We describe a technique for surface and sub-surface micro-machining of glass substrates using tightly focused femtosecond laser pulses at a wavelength of 1660 nm. Although silicate glass is normally transparent at this wavelength, the extremely high intensity of the focused beam causes multi-photon absorption, resulting in localized ablation of the glass substrate. Ablation is strictly confined to the vicinity of focus, leaving the rest of the substrate unaffected. We exploit this phenomenon to drill a micro-hole through a thin vertical wall that separates two adjacent pits machined by the same laser in a glass plate. A salient feature of pulsed laser micro-machining, therefore, is its ability to drill sub-surface tunnels and canals into glass substrates, a process that requires multiple steps in standard lithography. To demonstrate a potential application of this micro-machining technique, we have fabricated simple micro-fluidic structures on a glass plate. To prevent the evaporation of liquids in open micro-channels and micro-chambers thus fabricated requires a cover plate that seals the device by making point-to-point contact with the flat surface of the substrate. This point-to-point contacting is essential if the fluids are to remain confined within their various channels and chambers on the chip, without leaking into neighboring regions. Methods of protecting and sealing the micro-machined structures for microfluidic applications are also discussed.

To store information at extremely high-density and data-rate, we propose to adapt, integrate, and extend the techniques developed by chemists and molecular biologists for the purpose of manipulating biological and other macromolecules. In principle, volumetric densities in excess of 10^21 bits/cm^3 can be achieved when individual molecules having dimensions below a nanometer or so are used to encode the 0's and 1's of a binary string of data. In practice, however, given the limitations of electron-beam lithography, thin film deposition and patterning technologies, molecular manipulation in submicron dimensions, etc., we believe that volumetric storage densities on the order of 10^16 bits/cm^3 (i.e., petabytes per cubic centimeter) should be readily attainable, leaving plenty of room for future growth. The unique feature of the proposed new approach is its focus on the feasibility of storing bits of information in individual molecules, each only a few angstroms in size.

We have discovered approximately 250 variable stars in a sample of 23 selected GCs and have, therefore, updated the census of variables in each system and in some cases we have actually completed it down to a certain magnitude. The absolute magnitude and [Fe/H] for each individual RR Lyrae is obtained via the Fourier decomposition of the light curve. An average of these parameters leads to the distance and metallicity of the host GCs. We have also calibrated the P-L relation for SX Phe stars which enables an independent calculation of the cluster distance. We present the mean [Fe/H], $M_V$ and distance for a group of selected GCs based exclusively on the RR Lyrae light curve Fourier decomposition technique and set on a rather unprecedented homogeneous scale. We also discuss the luminosity dependence of the horizontal branch (HB) via the $M_V$-[Fe/H] relation. We find that this relation should be considered separately for the RRab and RRc stars.

As a continuation to the published work on model based calibration technique with HESP(Hanle Echelle Spectrograph) as a case study, in this paper we present the performance results of the technique. We also describe how the open parameters were chosen in the model for optimization, the glass data accuracy and handling the discrepancies. It is observed through simulations that the discrepancies in glass data can be identified but not quantifiable. So having an accurate glass data is important which is possible to obtain from the glass manufacturers. The model's performance in various aspects is presented using the ThAr calibration frames from HESP during its pre-shipment tests. Accuracy of model predictions and its wave length calibration comparison with conventional empirical fitting, the behaviour of open parameters in optimization, model's ability to track instrumental drifts in the spectrum and the double fibres performance were discussed. It is observed that the optimized model is able to predict to a high accuracy the drifts in the spectrum from environmental fluctuations. It is also observed that the pattern in the spectral drifts across the 2D spectrum which vary from image to image is predictable with the optimized model. We will also discuss the possible science cases where the model can contribute.

We have collected high-dispersion echelle spectra of red giant members in the twelve open clusters (OCs) and derived stellar parameters and chemical abundances for 26 species by either line equivalent widths or synthetic spectrum analyses. We confirm the lack of an age-metallicity relation for OCs but argue that such a lack of trend for OCs arise from the limited coverage in metallicity compared to that of field stars which span a wide range in metallicity and age. We confirm that the radial metallicity gradient of OCs is steeper (flatter) for Rgc < 12 kpc (> 12 kpc). We demonstrate that the sample of clusters constituting a steep radial metallicity gradient of slope $-$0.052$\pm$0.011 dex kpc$^{-1}$ at Rgc < 12 kpc are younger than 1.5 Gyr and located close to the Galactic midplane (|z| < 0.5 kpc) with kinematics typical of the thin disc. Whereas the clusters describing a shallow slope of $-$0.015$\pm$0.007 dex kpc$^{-1}$ at Rgc > 12 kpc are relatively old, thick disc members with a striking spread in age and height above the midplane (0.5 < |z| < 2.5 kpc). Our investigation reveals that the OCs and field stars yield consistent radial metallicity gradients if the comparison is limited to samples drawn from the similar vertical heights. We argue via the computation of Galactic orbits that all the outer disc clusters were actually born inward of 12 kpc but the orbital eccentricity has taken them to present locations very far from their birthplaces.

We report the distance and [Fe/H] value for the globular cluster NGC 5904 (M5) derived from the Fourier decomposition of the light curves of selected RRab and RRc stars. The aim in doing this was to bring these parameters into the homogeneous scales established by our previous work on numerous other globular clusters, allowing a direct comparison of the horizontal branch luminosity in clusters with a wide range of metallicities. Our CCD photometry of the large variable star population of this cluster is used to discuss light curve peculiarities, like Blazhko modulations, on an individual basis. New Blazhko variables are reported.
From the RRab stars we found [Fe/H]$_{\rm UVES} = -1.335 \pm 0.003{\rm(statistical)} \pm 0.110{\rm(systematic)}$, and a distance of $7.6\pm 0.2$ kpc, and from the RRc stars we found [Fe/H]$_{\rm UVES}$ = $-1.39 \pm 0.03{\rm(statistical)} \pm 0.12{\rm(systematic)}$ and a distance of $7.5 \pm 0.3$ kpc. The results for RRab and RRc stars should be considered independent since they come from different calibrations and zero points. Absolute magnitudes, radii and masses are also reported for individual RR Lyrae stars. The distance to the cluster was calculated by alternative methods like the P-L relation of SX Phe and the luminosity of the stars at the tip of the red giant branch; we obtained $7.7 \pm 0.4$ and $7.2-7.5$ kpc respectively.
The distribution of RR Lyrae stars in the instability strip is discussed and compared with other clusters in connection with the Oosterhoff and horizontal branch type. The Oosterhoff type II clusters systematically show a RRab-RRc segregation about the instability strip first-overtone red edge, while the Oosterhoff type I clusters may or may not display this feature. A group of RR Lyrae stars is identified in an advanced evolutionary stage, and two of them are likely binaries with unseen companions.

Secular period changes were detected and measured in some favourable cases. The classifications of some of the known variables were rectified.
The Fourier decomposition of RRab and RRc light curves was used to independently estimate the mean cluster value of [Fe/H] and distance. From the RRab stars we found [Fe/H]$_{\rm UVES}$=$-1.31 \pm 0.01{\rm(statistical)} \pm 0.12{\rm(systematic)}$ ([Fe/H]$_{\rm ZW}=-1.42$),and a distance of $30.0\pm 1.5$ kpc, and from the RRc stars we found [Fe/H]$_{\rm UVES}$=$-1.29\pm 0.12$ and a distance of $30.7\pm 1.1$ kpc, respectively. Absolute magnitudes, radii and masses are also reported for individual RR Lyrae stars. Also discussed are the independent estimates of the cluster distance from the tip of the RGB, 34.9$\pm$2.4 kpc and from the P-L relation of SX Phe stars, 28.9$\pm$2.2 kpc. The distribution of RR Lyrae stars in the horizontal branch shows a clear empirical border between stable fundamental and first overtone pulsators which has been noted in several other clusters; we interpret it as the red edge of the first overtone instability strip.

We have observed high-dispersion echelle spectra of red giant members in the five open clusters NGC 1342, NGC 1662, NGC 1912, NGC 2354 and NGC 2447 and determined their radial velocities and chemical compositions. These are the first chemical abundance measurements for all but NGC 2447. We combined our clusters from this and previous papers with a sample drawn from the literature for which we remeasured the chemical abundances to establish a common abundance scale. With this homogeneous sample of open clusters, we study the relative elemental abundances of stars in open clusters in comparison with field stars as a function of age and metallicity. We find a range of mild enrichment of heavy (Ba-Eu) elements in young open cluster giants over field stars of the same metallicity. Our analysis succinct that the youngest stellar generations in cluster might be under-represented by the solar neighbourhood field stars.

We have constructed Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) for these objects using the existing photometric data combined with infrared (IR) fluxes. For all sample stars, the SEDs exhibit double peaked energy distribution with well separated IR peaks showing the presence of dusty circumstellar material. The CNO abundances indicate the production of N via CN cycling, but observed [C/Fe] indicates the mixing of carbon produced by He burning by third dredge up although C/O ratio remains less that 1. A moderate DG effect is clearly seen for IRAS 18489 - 0629 and IRAS 17579 - 3121 while a large scatter observed in depletion plots for IRAS 18321 - 1401 and IRAS 13110 - 6629 indicate the presence of other processes affecting the observed abundance pattern.

The photometry of all stellar sources in the field of view of our images, down to $V\approx19$ mag, was performed using difference image analysis (DIA). For stars of $\approx15$ mag, measurement accuracies of $\approx8$ mmag and $\approx10$ mmag were achieved for $V$ and $I$ respectively. Three independent search strategies were applied to the 5525 light curves but no new variables were found above the threshold limits characteristic of our data set. The use of older data from the literature combined with the present data allowed the refinement of the periods of all known variables. Fourier light curve decomposition was performed for the RRab and the RRc stars to obtain an estimate of ${\rm [Fe/H]}_{ZW}=-1.62\pm0.02$ (statistical) $\pm0.14$ (systematic). A true distance modulus of $14.768\pm0.003$ mag (statistical) $\pm0.042$ mag (systematic), or a distance of $8.99\pm0.01$ kpc (statistical) $\pm0.17$ kpc (systematic) was calculated from the RRab star. The RRc star predicts a discrepant distance about one kiloparsec shorter but it is possibly a Blazhko variable. An independent distance from the P--L relationship for SX Phe stars leads to a distance of $8.9\pm0.3$ kpc. The SX Phe stars V5 and V9 are found to be double mode pulsators.

We have undertaken a comprehensive abundance analysis for a sample of relatively unexplored RV Tauri and RV Tauri like stars to further our understanding of post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) evolution. From our study based on high resolution spectra and grid of model atmospheres, we find indications of mild s-processing for V820 Cen and IRAS 06165+3158. On the other hand, SU Gem and BT Lac exhibit the effects of mild dust-gas winnowing. We have also compiled the existing abundance data on RV Tauri objects and find that a large fraction of them are afflicted by dust-gas winnowing and now added by the present work, we find a small group of two RV Tauris showing mild s-process enhancement in our Galaxy. With two out of three reported s-process enhanced objects belonging to RV Tauri spectroscopic class C, these intrinsically metal-poor objects appear to be promising candidates to analyse the possible s-processing in RV Tauri stars.

Identification of metal-poor stars among field stars is extremely useful for studying the structure and evolution of the Galaxy and of external galaxies. We search for metal-poor stars using the artificial neural network (ANN) and extend its usage to determine absolute magnitudes. We have constructed a library of 167 medium-resolution stellar spectra (R ~ 1200) covering the stellar temperature range of 4200 to 8000 K, log g range of 0.5 to 5.0, and [Fe/H] range of -3.0 to +0.3 dex. This empirical spectral library was used to train ANNs, yielding an accuracy of 0.3 dex in [Fe/H], 200 K in temperature, and 0.3 dex in log g. We found that the independent calibrations of near-solar metallicity stars and metal-poor stars decreases the errors in T_eff and log g by nearly a factor of two. We calculated T_eff, log g, and [Fe/H] on a consistent scale for a large number of field stars and candidate metal-poor stars. We extended the application of this method to the calibration of absolute magnitudes using nearby stars with well-estimated parallaxes. A better calibration accuracy for M_V could be obtained by training separate ANNs for cool, warm, and metal-poor stars. The current accuracy of M_V calibration is (+-)0.3 mag. A list of newly identified metal-poor stars is presented. The M_V calibration procedure developed here is reddening-independent and hence may serve as a powerful tool in studying galactic structure.

We report CCD $V$ and $I$ time-series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 6333 (M9). The technique of difference image analysis has been used, which enables photometric precision better than 0.05 mag for stars brighter than $V \sim 19.0$ mag, even in the crowded central regions of the cluster. The high photometric precision has resulted in the discovery of two new RRc stars, three eclipsing binaries, seven long-term variables and one field RRab star behind the cluster. A detailed identification chart and equatorial coordinates are given for all the variable stars in the field of our images of the cluster. Our data together with literature $V$-data obtained in 1994 and 1995 allowed us to refine considerably the periods for all RR Lyrae stars. The nature of the new variables is discussed. We argue that variable V12 is a cluster member and an Anomalous Cepheid. Secular period variations, double mode pulsations and/or the Blazhko-like modulations in some RRc variables are addressed. Through the light curve Fourier decomposition of 12 RR Lyrae stars we have calculated a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]$_{\rm ZW}$=$-1.70 \pm 0.01{\rm(statistical)} \pm 0.14{\rm(systematic)}$ or [Fe/H]$_{UVES}=-1.67 \pm 0.01{\rm(statistical)} \pm 0.19{\rm(systematic)}$.Absolute magnitudes, radii and masses are also estimated for the RR Lyrae stars.
A detailed search for SX Phe stars in the Blue Straggler region was conducted but none were discovered. If SX Phe exist in the cluster then their amplitudes must be smaller than the detection limit of our photometry.
The CMD has been corrected for heavy differential reddening using the detailed extinction map of the cluster of Alonso-García et al. (2012). This has allowed us to set the mean cluster distance from two independent estimates; from the RRab and RRc absolute magnitudes, we find $8.04\pm 0.19$ kpc and $7.88\pm0.30$ kpc respectively.

We use difference image analysis (DIA) to extract precise light curves in the relatively crowded star field, especially towards the densely populated central region. Several approaches are used for variability detection that recover the known variables and lead to new discoveries. We determine the physical parameters of the only RR0 star using light curve Fourier decomposition analysis.
We find one new long period variable and two SX Phe stars in the blue straggler region. We also present one candidate SX Phe star which requires follow-up observations. Assuming that the SX Phe stars are cluster members and using the period-luminosity relation for these stars, we estimate their distances as ~25.2+-1.8 and 26.8+-1.8 kpc, and identify their possible modes of oscillation. We refine the periods of the two RR Lyrae stars in our field of view. We find that the RR1 star V2 is undergoing a period change and possibly exhibits the Blazhko effect. Fourier decomposition of the light curve of the RR0 star V1 allows us to estimate the metallicity [Fe/H]_ZW-1.68+-0.10 or [Fe/H]_UVES-1.64+-0.13, log-luminosity ~1.76+-0.02, absolute magnitude ~0.38+-0.04 mag, and true distance modulus of ~16.93+-0.04 mag, which is equivalent to a distance of ~24.3+-0.5 kpc. All of these values are consistent with previous estimates in the literature.

We present the analysis of 26 nights of V and I time-series observations from 2011 and 2012 of the globular cluster M 30 (NGC 7099). We used our data to search for variable stars in this cluster and refine the periods of known variables; we then used our variable star light curves to derive values for the cluster's parameters. We used difference image analysis to reduce our data to obtain high-precision light curves of variable stars. We then estimated the cluster parameters by performing a Fourier decomposition of the light curves of RR Lyrae stars for which a good period estimate was possible. We also derive an estimate for the age of the cluster by fitting theoretical isochrones to our colour-magnitude diagram (CMD). Out of 13 stars previously catalogued as variables, we find that only 4 are bona fide variables. We detect two new RR Lyrae variables, and confirm two additional RR Lyrae candidates from the literature. We also detect four other new variables, including an eclipsing blue straggler system, and an SX Phoenicis star. This amounts to a total number of confirmed variable stars in M 30 of 12. We perform Fourier decomposition of the light curves of the RR Lyrae stars to derive cluster parameters using empirical relations. We find a cluster metallicity [Fe/H]_ZW=-2.01 +- 0.04, or [Fe/H]_UVES=-2.11 +- 0.06, and a distance of 8.32 +- 0.20 kpc (using RR0 variables), 8.10 kpc (using one RR1 variable), and 8.35 +- 0.42 kpc (using our SX Phoenicis star detection in M 30). Fitting isochrones to the CMD, we estimate an age of 13.0 +- 1.0 Gyr for M 30.

We have analyzed high-resolution echelle spectra of red giant members for seven open clusters in the Galactic anticentre direction to explore their chemical positions. Cluster membership has been confirmed by radial velocity. The spread in temperatures and gravities being very small among the red giants, nearly the same stellar lines were employed for all stars thereby reducing the abundance errors: the errors of the average abundance for a cluster were generally in the 0.02 to 0.05 dex range. Our present sample covers Galactocentric distances of 8.3 to 11.3 kpc and an age range of 0.2 to 4.3 Gyr. A careful comparison of our results for the cluster NGC 2682 (M 67) to other high-resolution abundance studies in the literature shows general good agreement for almost all elements in common.

We present the analysis of 11 nights of V and I time-series observations of the globular cluster NGC 1904 (M 79). Using this we searched for variable stars in this cluster and attempted to refine the periods of known variables, making use of a time baseline spanning almost 8 years. We use our data to derive the metallicity and distance of NGC 1904. We used difference imaging to reduce our data to obtain high-precision light curves of variable stars. We then estimated the cluster parameters by performing a Fourier decomposition of the light curves of RR Lyrae stars for which a good period estimate was possible. We also derive an estimate for the age of the cluster by fitting theoretical isochrones to our colour-magnitude diagram (CMD). Out of 13 stars previously classified as variables, we confirm that 10 are bona fide variables. We cannot detect variability in one other within the precision of our data, while there are two which are saturated in our data frames, but we do not find sufficient evidence in the literature to confirm their variability. We also detect a new RR Lyrae variable, giving a total number of confirmed variable stars in NGC 1904 of 11. Using the Fourier parameters, we find a cluster metallicity [Fe/H]_ZW=-1.63 +- 0.14, or [Fe/H]_UVES=-1.57 \pm 0.18, and a distance of 13.3 +- 0.4 kpc (using RR0 variables) or 12.9 kpc (using the one RR1 variable in our sample for which Fourier decomposition was possible).

We present a general framework for matching the point-spread function (PSF), photometric scaling, and sky background between two images, a subject which is commonly referred to as difference image analysis (DIA). We introduce the new concept of a spatially varying photometric scale factor which will be important for DIA applied to wide-field imaging data in order to adapt to transparency and airmass variations across the field-of-view. Furthermore, we demonstrate how to separately control the degree of spatial variation of each kernel basis function, the photometric scale factor, and the differential sky background. We discuss the common choices for kernel basis functions within our framework, and we introduce the mixed-resolution delta basis functions to address the problem of the size of the least-squares problem to be solved when using delta basis functions. We validate and demonstrate our algorithm on simulated and real data. We also describe a number of useful optimisations that may be capitalised on during the construction of the least-squares matrix and which have not been reported previously. We pay special attention to presenting a clear notation for the DIA equations which are set out in a way that will hopefully encourage developers to tackle the implementation of DIA software.

For this purpose we used our data base of imaging and light curves from Arellano Ferro et al. (2011) and Arellano Ferro et al. (2012). We find that two candidates are known variable stars, eight candidates were discovered first by Arellano Ferro et al. (2011) but would not have been known to Safanova & Stalin (2011) at the time of their paper submission, while four candidates are new variables. Three of the new variables are SX Phe type and one is a semi-regular red giant variable (SR type). We also tentatively confirm the presence of true variability in two other candidates and we are unable to investigate another four candidates because they are not in our data base. However, we find that the remaining 54 candidate variable stars are spurious detections where systematic trends in the light curves have been mistaken for true variability. We believe that the erroneous detections are caused by the adoption of a very low detection threshold used to identify these candidates.

This brings the confirmed Blazhko variables in this cluster to 23 RRc and 11 RRab, that represent 66% and 37% of the total population of RRc and RRab stars in the cluster respectively, making NGC 5024 the globular cluster with the largest presently known population of Blazhko RRc stars. We place a lower limit on the overall incidence rate of the Blazhko effect among the RR Lyrae population in this cluster of 52%. New data have allowed us to refine the pulsation periods. The limitations imposed by the time span and sampling of our data prevents reliable estimations of the modulation periods. The amplitudes of the modulations range between 0.02 and 0.39 mag. The RRab and RRc are neatly separated in the CMD, and the RRc Blazhko variables are on averge redder than their stable couterparts; these two facts may support the hypothesis that the HB evolution in this cluster is towards the red and that the Blazhko modulations in the RRc stars are connected with the pulsation mode switch.

The spread in temperatures and gravities being very small among the red giants nearly the same stellar lines were employed thereby reducing the random errors. The errors of average abundance for the cluster were generally in 0.02 to 0.07 dex range. Our present sample covers galactocentric distances of 8.3 to 10.5 kpc. The [Fe/H] values are $-0.02\pm$0.05 for NGC 752, $-0.07\pm$0.06 for NGC 2360, $-0.11\pm$0.05 for NGC 1817 and $-0.19\pm$0.06 for NGC 2506. Abundances relative to Fe for elements from Na to Eu are equal within measurement uncertainties to published abundances for thin disk giants in the field. This supports the view that field stars come from disrupted open clusters.

Mild indication of s-processing for IRAS 01259+6823, IRAS 05208-2035 and IRAS 08187-1905 have been found and a more comprehensive study of s-process enhanced objects IRAS 17279-1119 and IRAS 22223+4327 have been carried out. We have also made a contemporary abundance analysis of the high galactic latitude supergiants BD+39 4926 and HD 107369. The former is heavily depleted in refractories and estimated [Zn/H] of -0.7 dex most likely gives initial metallicity of the star. For HD 107369 the abundances of alpha and Fe-peak elements are similar to those of halo objects and moderate deficiency of s-process elements is seen. IRAS 07140-2321 despite being a short period binary with circumstellar shell does not exhibit selective depletion of refractory elements. We have compiled the stellar parameters and abundances for post-AGB stars with s-process enhancement, those showing significant depletion of condensable elements and those showing neither. The compilation shows that the s-process enhanced group contains very small number of binaries, and observed [alpha/Fe] are generally similar to thick disc values. It is likely that they represent AGB evolution of single stars. The compilation of depleted group contains larger fraction of binaries and generally supports the hypothesis of dusty discs surrounding binary post-AGB stars inferred via the shape of their SED and mid IR interferometry. IRAS 07140-2321 and BD+39 4926 are difficult to explain with this scenario and indicate the existence of additional parameter/condition needed to explain the depletion phenomenon.

We have conducted an LTE abundance analysis for SAO 40039 a warm post-AGB star whose spectrum is known to show surprisingly strong He I lines for its effective temperature and has been suspected of being H-deficient and He-rich. High-resolution optical spectra are analyzed using a family of model atmospheres with different He/H ratios. Atmospheric parameters are estimated from the ionization equilibrium set by neutral and singly ionized species of Fe and Mg, the excitation of Fe I and Fe II lines and the wings of the Paschen lines. On the assumption that the He I lines are of photospheric and not chromospheric in origin, a He/H ratio of approximately unity is found by imposing the condition that the adopted He/H ratio of the model atmosphere must equal the ratio derived from the observed He I triplet lines at 5876, 4471 and 4713 Angstrom, and singlet lines at 4922 and 5015 Angstrom. Using the model with the best-fitting atmospheric parameters for this He/H ratio, SAO 40039 is confirmed to exhibit mild dust-gas depletion, i.e., the star has an atmosphere deficient in elements of high condensation temperature. The star appears to be moderately metal-deficient with [Fe/H]=-0.4 dex. But the star's intrinsic metallicty as estimated from Na, S and Zn, elements of a low condensation temperature, is [Fe/H]_o {[Fe/H]_o refers to the star's intrinsic metallicity} ~ -0.2. The star is enriched in N and perhaps O too, changes reflecting the star's AGB past and the event that led to He enrichment.

We report CCD V and I time series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 5024 (M53). The technique of difference image analysis has been used which enables photometric precisions better than 10 mmag for stars brighter than V 18.5mag even in the crowded central regions of the cluster. The high photometric precision has resulted in the discovery of two new RR1 stars and thirteen SX Phe stars. A detailed identification chart is given for all the variable stars in the field of our images of the cluster. Periodicities were calculated for all RR Lyraes and SX Phe stars and a critical comparison is made with previous determinations.
Out of four probable SX Phe variables reported by Dekany & Kovacs (2009), the SX Phe nature is confirmed only for V80, V81 is an unlikely case while V82 and V83 remain as dubious cases. Previous misidentifications of three variables are corrected. Astrometric positions with an uncertainty of ~ 0.3 arcsec are provided for all variables.
The light curve Fourier decomposition of RR0 and RR1 is discussed, we find a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.92+-0.06 in the scale of Zinn & West from 19 RR0 stars. The true distance moduli 16.36+-0.05 and 16.28+-0.07 and the corresponding distances 18.7+-0.4 and 18.0+-0.5 kpc are found from the RR0 and RR1 stars respectively. These values are in agreement with the theoretical period-luminosity relations for RR Lyrae stars in the I band and with recent luminosity determinations for the RR Lyrae stars in the LMC.
The age of 13.25+-0.50 Gyr (Dotter et al. 2010), for NGC 5024, E(B-V)=0.02 and the above physical parameters of the cluster, as indicated from the RR0 stars, produce a good isochrone fitting to the observed CMD.
The PL relation for SX Phe stars in NGC 5024 in the V and I bands is discussed in the light of the 13 newly found SX Phe stars and their pulsation mode is identified in most cases.

We present the results from 10 nights of observations of the globular cluster NGC 6981 (M72) in the V, R and I Johnson wavebands. We employed the technique of difference image analysis to perform precision differential photometry on the time-series images, which enabled us to carry out a census of the under-studied variable star population of the cluster. We show that 20 suspected variables in the literature are actually non-variable, and we confirm the variable nature of another 29 variables while refining their ephemerides. We also detect 11 new RR Lyrae variables and 3 new SX Phe variables, bringing the total confirmed variable star count in NGC 6981 to 43.
We performed Fourier decomposition of the light curves for a subset of RR Lyrae stars and used the Fourier parameters to estimate the fundamental physical parameters of the stars using relations available in the literature. Mean values of these physical parameters have allowed us to estimate the physical parameters of the parent cluster. We derive a metallicity of [Fe/H]_ZW = -1.48+-0.03 on the Zinn & West (1984) scale (or [Fe/H]_UVES = -1.38+-0.03 on the new Carretta et al. (2009) scale) for NGC 6981, and distances of ~16.73+-0.36 kpc and ~16.68+-0.36 kpc from analysis of the RR0 and RR1 stars separately. We also confirm the Oosterhoff type I classification for the cluster, and show that our colour-magnitude data is consistent with the age of ~12.75+-0.75 Gyr derived by Dotter et al (2010).

We report the results of CCD $V$, $r$ and $I$ time-series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 5053. New times of maximum light are given for the eight known RR Lyrae stars in the field of our images and their periods are revised. Their $V$ light curves were Fourier decomposed to estimate their physical parameters. A discussion on the accuracy of the Fourier-based iron abundances, temperatures, masses and radii is given. New periods are found for the 5 known SX Phe stars and a critical discussion of their secular period changes is offered. The mean iron abundance for the RR Lyrae stars is found to be [Fe/H] $\sim -1.97 \pm 0.16$ and lower values are not supported by the present analysis. The absolute magnitude calibrations of the RR Lyrae stars yield an average true distance modulus of $16.12 \pm 0.04$ or a distance of $16.7 \pm 0.3$ kpc. Comparison of the observational CMD with theoretical isochrones indicates an age of $12.5 \pm 2.0$ Gyrs for the cluster. A careful identification of all reported Blue Stragglers (BS) and their $V,I$ magnitudes leads to the conclusion that BS12, BS22, BS23 and BS24 are not BS. On the other hand, three new BS are reported. Variability was found in seven BS, very likely of the SX Phe type in five of them, and in one red giant star. The new SX Phe stars follow established $PL$ relationships and indicate a distance in agreement with the distance from the RR Lyrae stars.

New CCD photometry of NGC 6366 has lead to the discovery of some variable stars. Two possible Anomalous Cepheids (or Pop II Cepheids), three long period variables, one SX Phe and one eclipsing binary have been found. Also a list of 10 candidate variables is reported. The light curve of the RRab star, V1, has been decomposed into its Fourier harmonics, and the Fourier parameters were used to estimate the star's metallicity and distance; [Fe/H] = -0.87 +- 0.14 and d = 3.2 +- 0.1 kpc. It is argued that V1 may not be a member of the cluster but rather a more distant object. If this is so, an upper limit for the distance to the cluster of 2.8 +- 0.1 kpc can be estimated. The P-L relationship for SX Phe stars and the identified modes in the newly discovered SX Phe variable, V6, allow yet another independent determination of the distance to the cluster of d = 2.7 \+- 0.1 kpc. The M_V - {\rm [Fe/H]} relationship for RR Lyrae stars is addressed and the case of V1 is discussed.

We report the results of CCD V and r photometry of the globular cluster NGC 5466. The difference image analysis technique adopted in this work has resulted in accurate time series photometry even in crowded regions of the cluster enabling us to discover five probably semi-regular variables. We present new photometry of three previously known eclipsing binaries and six SX Phe stars. The light curves of the RR Lyrae stars have been decomposed in their Fourier harmonics and their fundamental physical parameters have been estimated using semi-empirical calibrations. The zero points of the metallicity, luminosity and temperature scales are discussed and our Fourier results are transformed accordingly. The average iron abundance and distance to the Sun derived from individual RR Lyrae stars, indicate values of [Fe/H]=-1.91 +- 0.19 and D = 16.0 +- 0.6 kpc, or a true distance modulus of 16.02 +- 0.09 mag, for the parent cluster. These values are respectively in the Zinn & West metallicity scale and in agreement with recent luminosity determinations for the RR Lyrae stars in the LMC. The M_V-[Fe/H] relation has been recalibrated as M_V=+(0.18+-0.03)[Fe/H]+(0.85+-0.05) using the mean values derived by the Fourier technique on RR Lyrae stars in a family of clusters. This equation predicts M_V=0.58 mag for [Fe/H]=-1.5, in agreement with the average absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae stars calculated from several independent methods. The M_V-[Fe/H] relationship and the value of [Fe/H] have implications on the age of the globular clusters when determined from the magnitude difference between the horizontal branch and the turn off point (HB-TO method). The above results however would not imply a change in the age of NGC 5466, of 12.5+-0.9 Gyr, estimated from recent isochrone fitting.

Abundance analyses from high-resolution optical spectra are presented for 19 Type II Cepheids in the Galactic field. The sample includes both short-period (BL Her) and long-period (W Vir) stars. This is the first extensive abundance analysis of these variables. The C, N, and O abundances with similar spreads for the BL Her and W Vir show evidence for an atmosphere contaminated with $3α$-process and CN-cycling products. A notable anomaly of the BL Her stars is an overabundance of Na by a factor of about five relative to their presumed initial abundances. This overabundance is not seen in the W Vir stars. The abundance anomalies running from mild to extreme in W Vir stars but not seen in the BL Her stars are attributed to dust-gas separation that provides an atmosphere deficient in elements of high condensation temperature, notably Al, Ca, Sc, Ti, and $s$-process elements. Such anomalies have previously been seen among RV Tau stars which represent a long-period extension of the variability enjoyed by the Type II Cepheids. Comments are offered on how the contrasting abundance anomalies of BL Her and W Vir stars may be explained in terms of the stars' evolution from the blue horizontal branch.

Abstract:
We report the results of CCD V and R photometry of the RR Lyrae stars in M2. The periodicities of most variables are revised and new ephemerides are calculated. Light curve decomposition of the RR Lyrae stars was carried out and the corresponding mean physical parameters [Fe/H] = -1.47, Teff = 6276 K, log L = 1.63 Lsun and Mv = 0.71 from nine RRab and [Fe/H] = -1.61, M = 0.54 Msun, Teff = 7215 K…

A comparison of the radii obtained from the above luminosity and temperature with predicted radii from nonlinear convective models is discussed. The estimated mean distance to the cluster is 10.49 +- 0.15 kpc. These results place M2 correctly in the general globular cluster sequences Oosterhoff type, mass, luminosity and temperature, all as a function of the metallicity. Mean relationships for M, log L/Lsun, Teff and Mv as a function of [Fe/H] for a family of globular clusters are offered. These trends are consistent with evolutionary and structural notions on the horizontal branch. Eight new variables are reported.

Abstract:
We have carried out abundance analysis for a sample of high galactic latitude supergiants in search of evolved stars. We find that HD 27381 has atmospheric parameters and an abundance pattern very similar to that of the post-AGB star HD 107369. HD 10285 and HD 25291 are moderately metal-poor and show the influence of mixing that has brought the products of NeNa cycle to the surface. The high gal…

HD 10285 and HD 25291 are moderately metal-poor and show the influence of mixing that has brought the products of NeNa cycle to the surface. The high galactic latitude B supergiant HD 137569 shows selective depletion of refractory elements normally seen in post-AGB stars. We find that the high velocity B type star HD 172324 shows moderate deficiency of Fe group elements but the CNO abundances are very similar to that of disk B supergiants. The observed variations in the radial velocities, transient appearance of emission components in hydrogen line profiles and doubling of O I lines at 7774Åsupport the possibility of this star being a pulsating variable or a binary star.

An abundance analysis is presented and discussed for a sample of 14 RV Tauri stars. The present abundance data and those from our previous papers and by other workers are combined in an attempt to further understanding of the dust-gas separation process which afflicts many RV Tauri variables. We propose that a star's intrinsic (i.e., initial) metallicity is given by the photospheric zinc abundance. Variables warmer that about 5000 K and with an initial metallicity [Fe/H] $\geq$ $-$1 are affected by dust-gas separation. Variables of all metallicities and cooler than about $T_{\rm eff} \simeq 5000$ K are unaffected by dust-gas separation. The RV Tauri variables show a spread in their C abundances with the lower boundary of the points in the C versus Zn plane falling close to the predicted trend for giants after the first dredge-up. The upper boundary is inhabited by a few stars that are carbon-rich. The O abundances in the mean follow the predicted trend from unevolved stars in line with the expectation that photospheric O abundance is unaffected by the first dredge-up. An evolutionary scenario involving mass loss by a first ascent or early-AGB red giant, the primary star of a binary, is sketched.
