Aims. We aim to investigate the ionisation conditions and distances of Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) in the Galactic halo and beyond in the direction of the Local Group (LG) barycentre and anti-barycentre, by studying spectral data of 29 extragalactic background sources obtained with Cosmic Origins Spectropgraph (COS) installed on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Methods. We model column-densities of low, intermediate, and high ions, such as Si II, C II, Si III, Si IV, and C IV and use this to construct a set of Cloudy ionisation models. Results. In total, we found 69 high-velocity absorption components along the 29 lines of sight. The ones in the direction of the LG barycentre span the entire range of studied velocities, 100 \lesssim |v_{LSR}|\lesssim 400 km s^-1, while the anti-barycentre sample has velocities up to about 300 km s^-1. For 49 components, we infer the gas densities. In the direction of the LG barycentre, the gas densities exhibit a large range between log n_H=-3.96 to -2.55, while in the anti-barycentre direction the densities are systematically higher, log n_H>-3.25. The barycentre absorbers can be split into two groups based on their density: a high density group with log n_H>-3.54, which can be affected by the Milky Way radiation field, and a low density group (log n_H \leq -3.54). The latter has very low thermal pressures of P/k<7.3 K cm^-3. Conclusions. Our study shows that part of the absorbers in the LG barycentre direction trace gas at very low gas densities and thermal pressures. Such properties indicate that these absorbers are located beyond the virial radius of the Milky Way. Our study also confirms results from earlier, single-sightline studies, suggesting the presence of a metal-enriched intragroup medium filling the LG near its barycentre.

We present a detailed analysis of the absorption properties of one of the tidal gas streams around the Whale galaxy NGC4631 in the direction of the quasar 2MASSJ12421031+3214268. Our study is based on ultraviolet spectral data obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and 21cm-data from the HALOGAS project and the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). We detect strong HI Ly alpha absorption in the velocity range +550 to +800 km s^-1 related to gas from a NGC4631 tidal stream known as Spur 2. We measure a column density of log N(HI)=18.68pm0.15, indicating that the quasar sightline traces the outer boundary of Spur 2 as seen in the 21cm data. Metal absorption in Spur 2 is detected in the lines of OI, CII, SiII, and SiIII in a complex absorption pattern that reflects the multi-phase nature of the gas. We find that the average neutral gas fraction in Spur 2 towards 2MASSJ12421031+3214268 is only 14 percent. This implies that ionized gas dominates the total mass of Spur 2, which then may comprise more than 10^9 M_sun. No significant depletion of Si is observed, showing that Spur 2 does not contain significant amounts of dust. From the measured OI/HI column-density ratio we determine an alpha abundance in Spur 2 of 0.13pm0.07 solar ([alpha/H]=-0.90pm 0.16), which is substantially lower than what is observed in the NGC4631 disk. The low metallicity and low dust content suggest that Spur 2 represents metal-deficient gas stripped off a gas-rich satellite galaxy during a recent encounter with NGC4631.

To characterize the absorption properties of this circumgalactic medium (CGM) and its relation to the LG we present the so-far largest survey of metal absorption in Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) using archival ultraviolet (UV) spectra of extragalactic background sources. The UV data are obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and are supplemented by 21 cm radio observations of neutral hydrogen. Along 270 sightlines we measure metal absorption in the lines of SiII, SiIII, CII, and CIV and associated HI 21 cm emission in HVCs in the velocity range |v_LSR|=100-500 km s^-1. With this unprecedented large HVC sample we were able to improve the statistics on HVC covering fractions, ionization conditions, small-scale structure, CGM mass, and inflow rate. For the first time, we determine robustly the angular two point correlation function of the high-velocity absorbers, systematically analyze antipodal sightlines on the celestial sphere, and compare the absorption characteristics with that of Damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) and constrained cosmological simulations of the LG. Our study demonstrates that the Milky Way CGM contains sufficient gaseous material to maintain the Galactic star-formation rate at its current level. We show that the CGM is composed of discrete gaseous structures that exhibit a large-scale kinematics together with small-scale variations in physical conditions. The Magellanic Stream clearly dominates both the cross section and mass flow of high-velocity gas in the Milky Way's CGM. The possible presence of high-velocity LG gas underlines the important role of the local cosmological environment in the large-scale gas-circulation processes in and around the Milky Way (abridged).

Doubly ionized silicon (SiIII) is a powerful tracer of diffuse ionized gas inside and outside of galaxies. It can be observed in the local Universe in ultraviolet (UV) absorption against bright extragalactic background sources. We here present an extensive study of intervening SiIII-selected absorbers and their relation to the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies at low redshift (z<=0.1), based on the analysis of UV absorption spectra along 303 extragalactic lines of sight obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Along a total redshift path of Dz=24 we identify 69 intervening SiIII systems that all show associated absorption from other low and high ions. We derive a bias-corrected number density of dN/dz(SiIII)=2.5 for absorbers with column densities log N(SiIII)>12.2. We develop a geometrical model for the absorption-cross section of the CGM around the local galaxy population and find excellent agreement between the model predictions and the observations. We further compare redshifts and positions of the absorbers with that of ~64,000 galaxies using archival galaxy-survey data. For the majority of the absorbers we identify possible host galaxies within 300 km/s of the absorbers and derive impact parameters rho<200 kpc, demonstrating that the spatial distributions of SiIII absorbers and galaxies are highly correlated. Our study indicates that the majority of SiIII-selected absorbers in our sample trace the CGM of nearby galaxies within their virial radii at a typical covering fraction of ~70 per cent. From a detailed ionization model we estimate that diffuse gas in the CGM around galaxies, as traced by SiIII, contains substantially more baryonic mass than their neutral interstellar medium.

We present a detailed analysis of chemical abundances in a sub-damped Lyman alpha absorber at z=1.839 towards the quasar B1101-26, based on a very-high-resolution (R ~ 75,000) and high-signal-to-noise (S/N >100) spectrum observed with the UV Visual Echelle spectrograph (UVES) installed on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The absorption line profiles are resolved into a maximum of eleven velocity components spanning a rest-frame velocity range of 200 km/s. Detected ions include CII, CIV, NII, OI, MgI, MgII, AlII, AlIII, SiII, SiIII, SiIV, FeII, and possibly SII. The total neutral hydrogen column density is log N(HI) = 19.48 +/- 0.01. From measurements of column densities and Doppler parameters we estimate element abundances of the above-given elements. The overall metallicity, as traced by [OI/HI], is -1.56 +/- 0.01. For the nitrogen-to-oxygen ratio we derive an upper limit of [NI/OI] < -0.65, which suggests a chemically young absorption line system. This is supported by a supersolar alpha/Fe ratio of [SiII/FeII] ~ 0.5. The most striking feature in the observed abundance pattern is an unusually high sulphur-to-oxygen ratio of 0.69 < [SII/OI] < 1.26. We calculate detailed photoionisation models for two subcomponents with Cloudy, and can rule out that ionisation effects alone are responsible for the high S/O ratio. We instead speculate that the high S/O ratio is caused by the combination of several effects, such as specific ionisation conditions in multi-phase gas, unusual relative abundances of heavy elements, and/or dust depletion in a local gas environment that is not well mixed and/or that might be related to star-formation activity in the host galaxy. We discuss the implications of our findings for the interpretation of alpha-element abundances in metal absorbers at high redshift.

We present a multi-wavelength study of the Magellanic Stream (MS), a massive gaseous structure in the Local Group that is believed to represent material stripped from the Magellanic Clouds. We use ultraviolet, optical and radio data obtained with HST/COS, VLT/UVES, FUSE, GASS, and ATCA to study metal abundances and physical conditions in the Stream toward the quasar Fairall 9. Line absorption in the MS from a large number of metal ions and from molecular hydrogen is detected in up to seven absorption components, indicating the presence of multi-phase gas. From the analysis of unsaturated SII absorption, in combination with a detailed photoionization model, we obtain a surprisingly high alpha abundance in the Stream toward Fairall 9 of [S/H]=-0.30pm0.04 (0.5 solar). This value is 5 times higher than what is found along other MS sightlines based on similar COS/UVES data sets. In contrast, the measured nitrogen abundance is found to be substantially lower ([N/H]=-1.15pm0.06), implying a very low [N/alpha] ratio of -0.85 dex. The substantial differences in the chemical composition of MS toward Fairall 9 compared to other sightlines point toward a complex enrichment history of the Stream. We favour a scenario, in which the gas toward Fairall 9 was locally enriched with alpha elements by massive stars and then was separated from the Magellanic Clouds before the delayed nitrogen enrichment from intermediate-mass stars could set in. Our results support (but do not require) the idea that there is a metal-enriched filament in the Stream toward Fairall 9 that originates in the LMC.

To explore the ionization conditions in highly-ionized absorbers at high redshift we have studied in detail two intervening OVI absorbers at z=2 towards the quasar PKS1448-232, based on high (R=75,000) and intermediate (R=45,000) resolution optical VLT/UVES spectra. We find that both absorption systems are composed of several narrow subcomponents with CIV/OVI Doppler-parameters b<10 km/s, typically. This implies that the gas temperatures are T<10^5 K and that the absorbers are photoionized by the UV background. The system at z=2.1098 represents a simple, isolated OVI absorber that has only two absorption components and that is relatively metal-rich (Z\sim 0.6 solar). Ioinization modeling implies that the system is photoionized with OVI, CIV, and HI coexisting in the same gas phase. The second system at z=2.1660 represents a complicated, multi-component absorption system with eight OVI components spanning almost 300 km/s in radial velocity. The photoionization modeling implies that the metallicity is non-uniform and relatively low (<= 0.1 solar) and that the OVI absorption must arise in a gas phase different from that traced by CIV, CIII, and HI. Our detailed study of the two OVI systems towards PKS1448-232 shows that multi-phase, multi-component high-ion absorbers like the one at z=2.1660 require a detailed ionization modeling of the various subcomponents to obtain reliable results on the physical conditions and metal-abundances in the gas.

We present a new approach to constrain the spectral energy distribution of the intergalactic UV background observationally by studying metal absorption systems. We study single-component metal line systems exhibiting various well-measured species. Among the observed transitions at least two ratios of ionization stages from the same element are required, e.g. CIII/CIV and SiIII/SiIV. For each system photoionization models are constructed varying the spectrum of the ionizing radiation. The spectral energy distribution can then be constrained by comparing the models with the observed column density ratios. Extensive tests with artificial absorbers show that the spectrum of the ionizing radiation cannot be reconstructed unambiguously, but it is possible to constrain the main characteristics of the spectrum. Furthermore, the resulting physical parameters of the absorber, such as ionization parameter, metallicity, and relative abundances, may depend strongly on the adopted ionizing spectrum. Even in case of well-fitting models the uncertainties can be as high as ~0.5 dex for the ionization parameter and up to ~1.5 dex for the metallicity. Therefore, it is essential to know the hardness of the UV background when estimating the metallicity of the intergalactic medium. Applying the procedure to a small sample of 3 observed single-component metal line systems yields a soft ionizing radiation at z > 2 and a slightly harder spectrum at z < 2. The resulting energy distributions exhibit strong HeII Ly alpha re-emission features suggesting that reprocessing by intergalactic HeII is important. Comparing to UV background spectra from the literature indicates that the recent model of Madau & Haardt (2009) including sawtooth modulation due to reprocessing by intergalactic HeII with delayed helium reionization fits the investigated systems very well.

We report on the detection of strongly varying intergalactic HeII absorption in HST/COS spectra of two z~3 quasars. From our homogeneous analysis of the HeII absorption in these and three archival sightlines, we find a marked increase in the mean HeII effective optical depth from tau~1 at z~2.3 to tau>5 at z~3.2, but with a large scatter of 2< tau <5 at 2.7< z <3 on scales of ~10 proper Mpc. This scatter is primarily due to fluctuations in the HeII fraction and the HeII-ionizing background, rather than density variations that are probed by the co-eval HI forest. Semianalytic models of HeII absorption require a strong decrease in the HeII-ionizing background to explain the strong increase of the absorption at z>2.7, probably indicating HeII reionization was incomplete at z>2.7. Likewise, recent three-dimensional numerical simulations of HeII reionization qualitatively agree with the observed trend only if HeII reionization completes at z=2.7 or even below, as suggested by a large tau>3 in two of our five sightlines at z<2.8. By doubling the sample size at 2.7< z <3, our newly discovered HeII sightlines for the first time probe the diversity of the second epoch of reionization when helium became fully ionized.

Along a total redshift path of Dz~100 we detected 23 intervening CaII absorbers in both the CaII H & K lines, with rest frame equivalent widths W_r,3934=15-799 mA and column densities log N(CaII)=11.25-13.04. We obtain a bias corrected number density of weak intervening CaII absorbers of dN/dz=0.117+-0.044 at z=0.35 for absorbers with log N(CaII)>11.65. This is ~2.6 times the value obtained for damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) at low redshift. From ionization modeling we conclude that intervening CaII absorption with log N(CaII)>11.5 arises in optically thick neutral gas in DLAs, sub-DLAs and Lyman limit systems (LLS) at HI column densities of log N(HI)>17.4. The relatively large cross section of these absorbers together with the frequent detection of CaII absorption in high velocity clouds (HVCs) in the halo of the Milky Way suggests that a considerable fraction of the intervening CaII systems trace dusty neutral gas structures in the halos and circumgalactic environment of galaxies (i.e., they are HVC analogs). Considering all galaxies with luminosities L>0.05L* we calculate that the characteristic radial extent of (partly) neutral gas clouds with log N(HI)>17.4 around low-redshift galaxies is R_HVC ~ 55 kpc.

The amplitude of fluctuations in the Ly-a forest on small spatial scales is sensitive to the temperature of the IGM and its spatial fluctuations. The temperature of the IGM and its spatial variations contain important information about hydrogen and helium reionization. We present a new measurement of the small-scale structure in the Ly-a forest from 40 high resolution, high signal-to-noise, VLT spectra at z=2.2-4.2. We convolve each Ly-a forest spectrum with a suitably chosen wavelet filter, which allows us to extract the amount of small-scale structure in the forest as a function of position across each spectrum. We compare these measurements with high resolution hydrodynamic simulations of the Ly-a forest which track more than 2 billion particles. This comparison suggests that the IGM temperature close to the cosmic mean density (T_0) peaks near z=3.4, at which point it is greater than 20,000 K at 2-sigma confidence. The temperature at lower redshift is consistent with the fall-off expected from adiabatic cooling ($T_0 \propto (1+z)^2$), after the peak temperature is reached near z=3.4. At z=4.2 our results favor a temperature of T_0 = 15-20,000 K. However, owing mostly to uncertainties in the mean transmitted flux at this redshift, a cooler IGM model with T_0 = 10,000 K is only disfavored at the 2-sigma level here, although such cool IGM models are strongly discrepant with the z ~ 3-3.4 measurement. We do not detect large spatial fluctuations in the IGM temperature at any redshift covered by our data set. The simplest interpretation of our measurements is that HeII reionization completes sometime near z ~ 3.4, although statistical uncertainties are still large [Abridged].

The latter show a reasonable agreement with the overall shape of the HES MDF for [Fe/H] > -3.6, but only a model of Salvadori et al. We present a study of NV absorption systems at 1.5 < z < 2.5 in the optical spectra of 19 QSOs. Our analysis includes both absorbers arising from the intergalactic medium as well as systems in the vicinity of the background quasar. We construct detailed photoionization models to study the physical conditions and abundances in the absorbers and to constrain the spectral hardness of the ionizing radiation. The rate of incidence for intervening NV components is dN/dz = 3.38 +/- 0.43, corresponding to dN/dX = 1.10 +/- 0.14. The column density distribution function is fitted by the slope beta = 1.89 +/- 0.22, consistent with measurements for CIV and OVI. The narrow line widths (b_NV ~ 6 km/s) imply photoionization rather than collisions as dominating ionization process. The column densities of CIV and NV are correlated but show different slopes for intervening and associated absorbers, which indicates different ionizing spectra. Associated systems are found to be more metal-rich, denser, and more compact than intervening absorbers. This conclusion is independent of the adopted ionizing radiation. For the intervening NV systems we find typical values of [C/H] ~ -0.6 and n_H ~ 10^-3.6 cm^-3, and sizes of a few kpc, while for associated NV absorbers we obtain [C/H] ~ +0.7, n_H ~ 10^-2.8 cm^-3, and sizes of several 10 pc. The abundance of nitrogen relative to carbon [N/C] and alpha-elements like oxygen and silicon [N/alpha] is correlated with [N/H], indicating the enrichment by secondary nitrogen. The larger scatter in [N/alpha] in intervening systems suggests an inhomogeneous enrichment of the IGM. There is an anti-correlation between [N/alpha] and [alpha/C], which could be used to constrain the initial mass function of the carbon- and nitrogen-producing stellar population.

We present an analysis of the Lyman alpha forests of five quasar spectra in the near UV. Properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at an intermediate redshift interval (0.9 < z < 1.9) are studied. The amount of baryons in the diffuse photoionised IGM and the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) are traced to get constraints on the redshift evolution of the different phases of the intergalactic gas. The baryon density of the diffuse IGM is determined with photoionisation calculations under the assumption of local hydrostatic equilibrium. We assume that the gas is ionised by a metagalactic background radiation with a Haardt & Madau (2001) spectrum. The WHIM is traced with broad Lyman alpha (BLA) absorption. The properties of a number of BLA detections are studied. Under the assumption of collisional ionisation equilibrium a lower limit to the baryon density could be estimated. It is found that the diffuse photoionised IGM contains at least 25% of the total baryonic matter at redshifts 1 < z < 2. For the WHIM a lower limit of 2.4% could be determined. Furthermore the data indicates that the intergalactic gas is in a state of evolution at z=1.5. We confirm that a considerable part of the WHIM is created between z=1 and z=2.

This is primarily due to line contamination and overdensities probably created by large-scale structure. By comparing the HI absorption and the corresponding HeII absorption, we estimated the fluctuating spectral shape of the extragalactic UV radiation field along this line of sight. We find that the UV spectral shape near HE2347-4342 and in the projected vicinity of the three foreground quasars is statistically harder than expected from UV background models dominated by quasars. In addition, we find three highly ionised metal line systems near the quasars. However, they do not yield further constraints on the shape of the ionising field. We conclude that the foreground quasars show a transverse proximity effect that is detectable as a local hardening of the UV radiation field, although the evidence is strongest for QSOJ23495-4338. Thus, the relative spectral hardness traces the proximity effect also in overdense regions prohibiting the traditional detection in the HI forest. Furthermore, we emphasise that softening of quasar radiation by radiative transfer in the intergalactic medium is important to understand the observed spectral shape variations. From the transverse proximity effect of QSOJ23495-4338 we obtain a lower limit on the quasar lifetime of ~25 Myr.

Recent analyses of the intergalactic UV background by means of the HeII Lyman alpha forest assume that HeII and HI absorption features have the same line widths. We omit this assumption to investigate possible effects of thermal line broadening on the inferred HeII/HI ratio eta and to explore the potential of intergalactic HeII observations to constrain the thermal state of the IGM. Deriving a simple relation between the column density and the temperature of an absorber we develop a procedure to fit the parameters of a power law temperature-density relation and eta simultaneously. In an alternative approach the temperature of an absorber, eta, and the redshift scale of eta variations are estimated simultaneously. Tests with artificial data show that well-constrained results can be obtained only if the signal-to-noise ratio in the HeII forest is S/N > 20. Thus, it is impossible to give an estimate of the temperature-density relation with the HeII data available at present (S/N ~5). However, we find that only 45% of the lines in our sample favor turbulent line widths. Furthermore, the inferred eta values are on average about 0.05 dex larger if a thermal component is taken into account, and their distribution is 46% narrower in comparison to a purely turbulent fit. Therefore, variations of eta on a 10% level may be related to the presence of thermal line broadening. The apparent correlation between the strength of the HI absorption and the eta value, which has been found in former studies, essentially disappears if thermal broadening is taken into account. In the redshift range 2.58 < z < 2.74 towards the quasars HE2347-4342 and HS1700+6416 we obtain eta ~ 100. (abridged)

The systems are analyzed by means of the Monte Carlo Inversion method completed with the spectral shape recovering procedure. The UVB spectral shape fluctuates at 2.4 < z < 2.9 mostly due to radiative transfer processes in the clumpy IGM. At z < 1.8, the IGM becomes almost transparent both in the HI and HeII Lyman continua and the variability of the spectral shape comes from diversity of spectral indices describing the QSO/AGN intrinsic radiation. At z > 2.4, the recovered spectral shapes show intensity depression between 3 and 4 Ryd due to HeII Ly-alpha absorption in the IGM clouds (line blanketing) and continuous medium (true Gunn-Petersen effect). The mean HeII Ly-alpha opacity estimated from the depth of this depression corresponds within 1-2sigma to the values directly measured from the HI/HeII Ly-alpha forest towards the quasars studied. The observed scatter in eta = N(HeII)/N(HI) and anti-correlation between N(HI) and eta can be explained by the combined action of variable spectral softness and differences in the mean gas density between the absorbing clouds. Neither of the recovered spectral shapes show features which can be attributed to the putative input of radiation from soft sources like starburst galaxies.

We present a reanalysis of the HeII Lyman alpha absorption towards the quasars HS1700+6416 and HE2347-4342 using new high S/N, optical observations. An alternative analysis method is applied, which fits the high quality, optical HI data directly to the HeII spectrum. The results are compared to those inferred from standard line profile analyses. This new method enables us to derive redshift scales characterizing the fluctuations of the column density ratio eta. We find eta changing smoothly with redshift on typical scales of Delta z ~ 0.01-0.03 corresponding to 8-24 h^-1 Mpc comoving. The real length scales of variations of the column density ratio might be even larger, since part of the fluctuations may be caused by noise in the HeII data and by effects due to the applied method. However, eta variations on small scales of a few Mpc with an amplitude of about +/- 1.5 dex cannot be ruled out completely. The data shows an apparent correlation between low eta regions and the presence of metal line absorbers, which corresponds to the more general correlation of low eta and strong HI absorption. Thermal line broadening is suggested as a probable explanation for this apparent correlation, since both fit methods would severely underestimate eta for absorbers with log N(HI) > 13 if the line width was dominated by thermal broadening. Indeed, lines located close to the cut-off of the b(N) distribution yield lower column density ratios compared to the whole sample, in particular if high density absorbers are considered. We argue that the apparent correlation of eta with the strength of the HI absorption is caused by insufficient consideration of thermal broadened lines by the standard analysis. As unbiased value of the column density ratio, we find eta ~80 in agreement with previous estimates.

We present a sample of 1777 bright (9<B<14) metal-poor candidates selected from the Hamburg/ESO Survey (HES). Despite saturation effects present in the red portion of the HES objective-prism spectra, the data were recoverable and quantitative selection criteria could be applied to select the sample. Analyses of medium-resolution (~2 A) follow-up spectroscopy of the entire sample, obtained with several 2 to 4 m class telescopes, yielded 145 new metal-poor stars with metallicity [Fe/H]<-2.0, of which 79 have [Fe/H]<-2.5, and 17 have [Fe/H]<-3.0. We also obtained C/Fe estimates for all these stars. From this, we find a frequency of C-enhanced ([C/Fe]>1.0) metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-2.0) giants of 9% +- 2%, which is lower than previously reported. However, the frequency raises to similar (>20%) and higher values with increasing distance from the Galactic plane. Although the numbers of stars at low metallicity are falling rapidly at the lowest metallicities, there is evidence that the fraction of carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars is increasing rapidly as a function of declining metallicity. For ~60 objects, high-resolution data have already been obtained; one of these, HE 1327-2326, is the new record holder for the most iron-deficient star known.

In preparation of a study of the HeII/HI ratio towards the bright QSO HS1700+6416, we predict the metal line content of the far-UV spectral range by modelling 18 metal absorption line systems with redshifts 0.2<z<2.6 identified in the spectrum of this quasar. For that purpose, we investigate the spectral energy distribution of the metagalactic ionizing radiation field. Simple photoionization models based on 8 different shapes of the ionizing background are tested for each system. The adopted energy distributions comprise the Haardt & Madau (2001, HM) model of metagalactic UV background as well as typical spectra of AGN and starburst galaxies. The models are evaluated and the favoured one is estimated. We find that the majority of the considered systems is best reproduced with a HM-like ionizing radiation, where the HeII break, formally located at 4 Ryd, is shifted to lower energies (~3 Ryd), probably due to the opacity of the higher HeII Lyman series lines. The remaining systems can be reasonably described with models based on the unmodified HM background or the spectra of AGN or starburst galaxies. This finding supports the idea that the UV background is spatially variable due to both IGM opacity variations and to local sources. In comparison to an unmodified HM background, the resulting ionizing spectrum leads to carbon abundances lower by ~0.5 dex. Furthermore, if the ionizing radiation field as determined from metal line systems was typical for the IGM, the expected HeII/HI ratio would be 150 to 190.

We present the far-UV spectrum of the quasar HS1700+6416 taken with FUSE. This QSO provides the second line of sight with the HeII absorption resolved into a Ly alpha forest structure. Since HS1700+6416 is slightly less redshifted (z=2.72) than HE2347-4342, we only probe the post-reionization phase of HeII, seen in the evolution of the HeII opacity, which is consistent with a simple power law. The HeII/HI ratio eta is estimated using a line profile-fitting procedure and an apparent optical depth approach, respectively. The expected metal line absorption in the far-UV is taken into account as well as molecular absorption of galactic H_2. About 27% of the eta values are affected by metal line absorption. In order to investigate the applicability of the analysis methods, we create simple artificial spectra based on the statistical properties of the HI Ly alpha forest. The analysis of the artificial data demonstrates that the apparent optical depth method as well as the line profile-fitting procedure lead to confident results for restricted data samples only (12.0 < log N(HI) < 13.0). The reasons are saturation in the case of the apparent optical depth and thermal line widths in the case of the profile fits. Furthermore, applying the methods to the unrestricted data set may mimic a correlation between eta and the strength of the HI absorption. For the restricted data samples a scatter of 10 - 15% in eta would be expected even if the underlying value is constant. The observed scatter is significantly larger than expected, indicating that the intergalactic radiation background is indeed fluctuating. In the redshift range 2.58 < z < 2.72, where the data quality is best, we find eta ~ 100, suggesting a contribution of soft sources like galaxies to the UV background.

We report on high resolution spectra of the bright QSO HS0747+4259 (zem = 1.90, V = 15.8) observed to search for intermediate redshift OVI absorption systems. The spectra were obtained by means of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) at the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) at the W. M. Keck telescope. We identify 16 OVI systems in the range 1.07 <= z <= 1.87. Among them, six systems with zabs = 1.46-1.8 exhibit a sufficient number of lines of different ionic transitions to estimate the shape of the ionizing radiation field in the range 1 Ryd < E < 10 Ryd. All recovered UV ionizing spectra are characterized by the enhanced intensity at E > 3 Ryd compared to the model spectrum of Haardt and Madau (1996). This is in line with the observational evidence of a deficiency of strong Ly-alpha absorbers with N(HI) > 10^{15} cm^{-2}, at z < 2. The UV background shows significant local variations: the spectral shape estimated at z = 1.59 differs from that obtained at z = 1.81 and 1.73. A possible cause of these variations is the presence of a QSO/AGN at z ~= 1.54-1.59 close to the line of sight. No features favoring the input of stellar radiation to the ionizing background are detected, limiting the escape fraction of the galactic UV photons to f_esc < 0.05.

Its abundance pattern is characterized by very high C and N abundances. The detection of Sr which is overabundant by a factor of 10 as compared to iron and the Sun, suggests that neutron-capture elements had already been produced in the very early Galaxy. A puzzling Li depletion is observed in this unevolved star which contradicts the value of the primordial Li derived from WMAP and other Li studies. The absorption is characterized by alternating voids and dense filament structures seen in both HeII and HI. Attempts to model the HeII opacity in terms of HI Ly alpha forest absorption are not successful in the voids, suggesting that HeII reionization is not complete between z=2.77 and 2.97 or that an optically thin Lyman limit system with z ~ 0.3 is responsible for the additional opacity.

The chemically most primitive stars provide constraints on the nature of the first stellar objects that formed in the Universe; elements other than hydrogen, helium and traces of lithium within these objects were generated by nucleosynthesis in the very first stars. The relative abundances of elements in the surviving primitive stars reflect the masses of the first stars, because the pathways of nucleosynthesis are quite sensitive to stellar masses. Several models have been suggested to explain the origin of the abundance pattern of the giant star HE 0107-5240, which hitherto exhibited the highest deficiency of heavy elements known. Here we report the discovery of HE 1327-2326, a subgiant or main-sequence star with an iron abundance about a factor of two lower than that of HE 0107-5240. Both stars show extreme overabundances of carbon and nitrogen with respect to iron, suggesting a similar origin of the abundance patterns. The unexpectedly low Li and high Sr abundances of HE 1327-2326, however, challenge existing theoretical understanding: none predicts the high Sr abundance or provides a Li depletion mechanism consistent with data available for the most metal-poor stars.

We present 40 fully hydrodynamical numerical simulations of the intergalactic gas that gives rise to the Ly-alpha forest. We make artificial spectra from each and measure three output parameters: the mean flux, a measure of the most common Ly-alpha line width (b-value), and the 1D power spectrum of the flux on scales from 0.01 - 0.1 s/km. We investigate how these output parameters are correlated with the input parameters that describe the simulations. These input parameters include the main cosmological parameters; and two astrophysical parameters gammah and gammahe. The parameter gammah controls the rate of ionization of H I, He I and He II while gammahe controls the rate of heating. We compare the output from the simulations to data from HIRES and UVES spectra and we give a new measurement of the flux power from these spectra at z=1.95. We find that simulations with a wide variety of sigma_8 values, from at least 0.8 - 1.1, can fit the small scale flux power and b-values when we adjust gammahe to compensate for the sigma_8 change. We can also use gammah to adjust the H I ionization rate to simultaneously match the mean flux. We derive scaling relations that give the output parameter values expected for a variety of input parameters with errors of 2% for optical depth and 1.4% for b-balues. We can break the degeneracy between gammahe and sigma_8 using large scale power or other data to fix sigma_8.

Using an artificial HI Lyman alpha spectrum we simulate the corresponding HeII forest with fixed values of eta and a Doppler parameter consisting of a thermal and a turbulent part. In addition metal lines with line strengths and line density as expected in the case of HS 1700+6416 are superimposed. FUSE-like noise is added. The analysis of the simulated spectra in terms of Doppler profiles recovers the input eta = N(HeII)/N(HI) with a scatter by a factor of 10. About 10 % have significantly lower eta-values for various reasons. The majority of the extremely high eta-values (up to 1000) are evidently caused by metal lines. We conclude that part of the scatter in eta of previous analyses of the HeII forest in HE 2347-4342 can be regarded as an artifact. However, we confirm that the correlation between small column densities (in voids) and high eta-values is not a methodical artifact and appears to be a true phenomenon.

Abstract:
We present FUSE observations of the HeII Lyman alpha forest in the redshift range 2.3 < z < 2.7 towards HS1700+6416. Between October 2002 and February 2003, the brightness of the QSO increased by a factor 2. Therefore, with an exposure time of 203 ks during orbital night, the quality of the resulting spectrum is comparable to the HE2347-4342 data. This second line of sight with a resolved HeII L…

This second line of sight with a resolved HeII Lyman alpha forest reveals a similar variation of several orders of magnitude of the column density ratio eta = N(HeII)/N(HI) and confirms the results of previous studies. The well-known metal line spectrum of HS1700+6416 permits to examine the influence of metal line absorption on the HeII column densities.

We present an analysis of the complex associated system of the high-redshift QSO HE2347-4342. Absorption features of HI, CIII, CIV, NV, and OVI with up to 16 components occur in the optical spectral range located up to 1500 km/s redwards from the emission line. Apparently, CIV and NV show the line locking effect. A quantivative analysis of the line distribution comparing simulated spectra with randomly distributed doublets reveals, however, no statistical evidence for its physical reality. Using photoionization calculations to emulate the observed ion column densities we constrain the quasar's spectral energy distribution. Absorbers in the velocity range of 200 - 600 km/s can be modelled successfully with a spectral index of alpha ~ -3 at energies higher than 3 - 4 Ryd, which is an energy distribution similar to the QSO continuum suggested by Mathews & Ferland (1987). The analysis of a group of high velocity absorbers (v > 1300 km/s) leads to a harder energy distribution. The large amount of helium (log N(HeII) > 16.3) associated with these absorbers implies that they are responsible for the observed absence of the proximity effect (Reimers et al. 1997). Clouds located more distant from the quasar may be shielded from the high energy part of the quasar continuum due to optically thick absorption shortward of 228 Angstrom by the high velocity absorbers. A group of absorbers with 900 < v < 1200 km/s, in particular a cloud at 1033 km/s, which has the most reliable column density measurements, can be modelled neither with photoionzation nor under the assumption of collisionally ionized gas.
