Graphene quality indicators obtained by Raman spectroscopy have been correlated to the structural changes of the graphene/Germanium interface as a function of in-vacuum thermal annealing. Specifically, it is found that graphene becomes markedly defected at 650 °C. By combining scanning tunneling microscopy, x-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Near Edge x-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy, we conclude that these defects are due to the release of H_{2} gas trapped at the graphene/Germanium interface. The H_{2} gas was produced following the transition from the as-grown hydrogen-termination of the Ge(110) surface to the emergence of surface reconstructions in the substrate. Interestingly, a complete self-healing process is observed in graphene upon annealing to 800 °C. The subtle interplay revealed between the microscopic changes occurring at the graphene/Germanium interface and graphene's defect density is valuable for advancing graphene growth, controlled 2D-3D heterogeneous materials interfacing and integrated fabrication technology on semiconductors.

A well-posed stress-driven mixture is proposed for Timoshenko nano-beams. The model is a convex combination of local and nonlocal phases and circumvents some problems of ill-posedness emerged in strain-driven Eringen-like formulations for structures of nanotechnological interest. The nonlocal part of the mixture is the integral convolution between stress field and a bi-exponential averaging kernel function characterized by a scale parameter. The stress-driven mixture is equivalent to a differential problem equipped with constitutive boundary conditions involving bending and shear fields. Closed-form solutions of Timoshenko nano-beams for selected boundary and loading conditions are established by an effective analytical strategy. The numerical results exhibit a stiffening behavior in terms of scale parameter.

Despite intensive research a physical explanation of high Tc superconductors remains elusive. One reason for this is that these materials have generally a very complex structure making useless theoretical models for a homogeneous system. Little is known on the control of the critical temperature by the space disposition of defects because of lack of suitable experimental probes. X-ray diffraction and neutron scattering experiments used to investigate y oxygen dopants in YBa2Cu3O 6+y lack of spatial resolution. Here we report the spatial imaging of dopants distribution in-homogeneity in YBa2Cu3O6.67 using scanning nano X-ray diffraction. By changing the X-ray beam size from 1 micron to 300 nm of diameter, the lattice inhomogeneity increases. The ordered oxygen puddles size distribution vary between 6-8 nm using 1x1 μm2 beam, while it is between 5-12 nm with a fat tail using the 300x300 nm2 beam. The increased inhomogeneity at the nanoscale points toward an intrinsic granular complexity.

Degradation of the myelin sheath is a common pathology underlying demyelinating neurological diseases from Multiple Sclerosis to Leukodistrophies. Although large malformations of myelin ultrastructure in the advanced stages of Wallerian degradation is known, its subtle structural variations at early stages of demyelination remains poorly characterized. This is partly due to the lack of suitable and non-invasive experimental probes possessing sufficient resolution to detect the degradation. Here we report the feasibility of the application of an innovative non-invasive local structure experimental approach for imaging the changes of statistical structural fluctuations in the first stage of myelin degeneration. Scanning micro X-ray diffraction, using advances in synchrotron x-ray beam focusing, fast data collection, paired with spatial statistical analysis, has been used to unveil temporal changes in the myelin structure of dissected nerves following extraction of the Xenopus laevis sciatic nerve. The early myelin degeneration is a specific ordered compacted phase preceding the swollen myelin phase of Wallerian degradation. Our demonstration of the feasibility of the statistical analysis of SmXRD measurements using biological tissue paves the way for further structural investigations of degradation and death of neurons and other cells and tissues in diverse pathological states where nanoscale structural changes may be uncovered.

The local structure and electronic properties of Rb$_{1-x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ are investigated by means of site selective polarized x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the iron and selenium K-edges as a function of pressure. A combination of dispersive geometry and novel nanodiamond anvil pressure-cell has permitted to reveal a step-like decrease in the Fe-Se bond distance at $p\simeq11$ GPa. The position of the Fe K-edge pre-peak, which is directly related to the position of the chemical potential, remains nearly constant until $\sim6$ GPa, followed by an increase until $p\simeq 11$ GPa. Here, as in the local structure, a step-like decrease of the chemical potential is seen. Thus, the present results provide compelling evidence that the origin of the reemerging superconductivity in $A_{1-x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ in vicinity of a quantum critical transition is caused mainly by the changes in the electronic structure.

Oxygen chain fragments are known to appear at the insulator to superconductor transition (SIT) in YBa2Cu3O6+y. However the self organization and the size distribution of oxygen chain fragments is not known. Here we contribute to fill this gap, using scanning micro X ray diffraction which is a novel imaging method based on advances in focusing synchrotron radiation beam. This novel approach allows us to probe both real-space and k-space of a high-quality YBa2Cu3O6.33 single crystals with Tc=7K. We report compelling evidence for nanoscale striped puddles, with Ortho-II structure, made of chain fragments in the basal Cu(1) plane with local oxygen concentration 0.5. The size of the Ortho-II puddles spans a range between 2 and 9 nanometers. The real space imaging of Ortho-II puddles granular network shows that superconductivity, at low hole-do** regime, occurs in a network of nanoscale oxygen ordered patches, interspersed with oxygen depleted regions. The manipulation by thermal treatments of the striped Ortho II puddles has been investigated focusing on the spontaneous symmetry breaking near the order to disorder phase transition at 350 K.

High temperature superconductivity emerges in unique materials, like cuprates, that belong to the class of heterostructures at atomic limit, made of a superlattice of superconducting atomic layers intercalated by spacer layers. The physical properties of a strongly correlated electronic system, emerge from the competition between different phases with a resulting inhomogeneity from nanoscale to micron scale. Here we focus on the spatial arrangements of two types of structural defects in the cuprate La2CuO4+y : i) the local lattice distortions in the CuO2 active layers and ii) the lattice distortions around the charged chemical dopants in the spacer layers. We use a new advanced microscopy method: scanning nano X-ray diffraction (nXRD). We show here that local lattice distortions form incommensurate nanoscale ripples spatially anticorrelated with puddles of self-organized chemical dopants in the spacer layers.
