We estimate limits on non-universal coupling of hypothetical hidden fields to standard matter by evaluating the fractional changes in the electron-to-proton mass ratio, mu = m_e/m_p, based on observations of ClassI methanol masers distributed in the Milky Way disk over the range of the galactocentric distances 4 < R < 12 kpc. The velocity offsets DeltaV = V44 - V95 measured between the 44 and 95 GHz methanol lines provide, so far, one of the most stringent constraints on the spatial gradient k_mu = d(Delta mu/mu)/dR < 2x10^-9 kpc-1 and the upper limit on Delta mu/mu < 2x10^-8, where Delta mu/mu = (mu_obs-mu_lab)/mu_lab. We also find that the offsets DeltaV are clustered into two groups which are separated by 0.022 +/- 0.003 km/s (1sigma C.L.). The grou** is most probably due to the dominance of different hyperfine transitions in the 44 and 95 GHz methanol maser emission. Which transition becomes favored is determined by an alignment (polarization) of the nuclear spins of the four hydrogen atoms in the methanol molecule. This result confirms that there are preferred hyperfine transitions involved in the methanol maser action.

For all available estimates of Delta mu/mu ranging between z = 0 and z = 1100, - the epoch of recombination, - a regression curve Delta mu/mu = k_mu (1+z)^p, with k_mu = (1.6 +/- 0.3) x10^-8 and p = 2.00 +/- 0.03, is deduced. If confirmed, this would imply a dynamical nature of dark matter/dark energy.

Non-standard fields are assumed to be responsible for phenomena attributed to dark energy and dark matter. Being coupled to ordinary matter, these fields modify the masses and/or charges of the elementary particles, thereby violating the Weak Equivalence Principle. Thus, values of fundamental constants such as the proton-to-electron mass ratio, mu, and/or the fine structure constant, alpha, measured in different environment conditions can be used as probes for this coupling. Here we perform differential measurements of F = mu*alpha^2 to test a non-standard coupling in the Magellanic Clouds - dwarf galaxies where the overall mass budget is dominated by dark matter. The analysis is based on [CI] and CO lines observed with the Herschel Space Observatory. Since these lines have different sensitivities to changes in mu and alpha, the combined alpha and mu variations can be evaluated through the radial velocity offsets, Delta V, between the CO and [CI] lines. Averaging over nine positions in the Magellanic Clouds, we obtain <Delta V> = -0.02+/-0.07 km/s, leading to |Delta F/F| < 2*10^-7 (1sigma), where Delta F/F = (F_obs-F_lab)/F_lab}. However, for one position observed with five times higher spectral resolution we find Delta V = -0.05+/-0.02 km/s, resulting in Delta F/F = (-1.7+/-0.7)*10^-7. Whether this offset is due to changes in the fundamental constants, due to chemical segregation in the emitting gas or merely due to Doppler noise requires further investigations.

Absorption-line systems detected in high resolution quasar spectra can be used to compare the value of dimensionless fundamental constants such as the fine-structure constant, alpha, and the proton-to-electron mass ratio, mu = m_p/m_e, as measured in remote regions of the Universe to their value today on Earth. In recent years, some evidence has emerged of small temporal and also spatial variations in alpha on cosmological scales which may reach a fractional level of 10 ppm . We are conducting a Large Programme of observations with VLT UVES to explore these variations. We here provide a general overview of the Large Programme and report on the first results for these two constants, discussed in detail in Molaro et al. and Rahmani et al. A stringent bound for Delta(alpha)/Alpha is obtained for the absorber at_abs = 1.6919 towards HE 2217-2818. The absorption profile is complex with several very narrow features, and is modeled with 32 velocity components. The relative variation in alpha in this system is +1.3+-2.4_{stat}+-1.0_{sys} ppm if Al II lambda 1670AA and three Fe II transitions are used, and +1.1+-2.6_{stat} ppm in a lightly different analysis with only Fe II transitions used. The expectation at this sky position of the recently-reported dipolar variation of alpha is (3.2--5.4)+-1.7 ppm depending on dipole model. This constraint of Delta(alpha)/alpha at face value is not supporting this expectation but is not inconsistent with it at the 3 sigma level. For the proton-to-electron mass ratio the analysis of the H_2 absorption lines of the z_{abs}~2.4018 damped Ly alpha system towards HE 0027- 1836 provides Delta(mu)/mu = (-7.6 +- 8.1_{stat} +- 6.3_{sys}) ppm which is also consistent with a null variation. Absorption line systems detected in quasar spectra can be used to compare the value of the fine-structure constant, α, measured today on Earth with its value in distant galaxies. In recent years, some evidence has emerged of small temporal and also spatial variations of α on cosmological scales which may reach a fractional level of ~ 10 ppm (parts per million). To test these claims we are conducting a Large Program with the VLT UVES . We are obtaining high-resolution (R ~ 60000 and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N ~ 100) UVES spectra calibrated specifically for this purpose. Here we analyse the first complete quasar spectrum from this Program, that of HE 2217-2818. We apply the Many Multiplet method to measure α in 5 absorption systems towards this quasar: zabs = 0.7866, 0.9424, 1.5558, 1.6279 and 1.6919. The most precise result is obtained for the absorber at zabs = 1.6919 where 3 Fe II transitions and Al II λ1670 have high S/N and provide a wide range of sensitivities to α. The absorption profile is complex, with several very narrow features, and requires 32 velocity components to be fitted to the data. Our final result for the relative variation in α in this system is Deltaα/α = +1.3 +/- 2.4stat +/- 1.0sys ppm. This is one of the tightest current bounds on α variation from an individual absorber. The absorbers towards quasar HE 2217-2818 reveal no evidence for variation in α at the 3 ppm precision level (1σ confidence). If the recently reported 10 ppm dipolar variation of α across the sky were correct, the expectation at this sky position is (3.2-5.4) +/-1.7 ppm depending on dipole model used . Our constraint of Deltaα/α=+1.3+/-2.4stat +/-1.0sys ppm is not inconsistent with this expectation.

The systems are optically thin and reveal multiple lines of different metal ions with the ionization potentials lying in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) range (1 Ryd to 0.2 keV). For each system, the EUV SED of the underlying ionization field is reconstructed by means of a special technique developed for solving the inverse problem in spectroscopy. For the zabs = 1.8916 system, the analysis also involves the HeI resonance lines of the Lyman series and the HeI 504 A continuum, which are seen for the first time in any cosmic object except the Sun. Results. From one system to another, the SED of the ionizing continuum changes significantly, indicating that the intergalactic ionization field at z ~ 2 fluctuates at the scale of at least Delta_z ~ 0.004. This is consistent with Delta_z ~ 0.01 estimated from HeII and HI Lyman-alpha forest measurements between the redshifts 2 and 3.

Aims. We constrain a hypothetical variation in the fundamental physical constants over the course of cosmic time. Methods. We use unique observations of the CO(7-6) rotational line and the [CI] 3P_2 - 3P_1 fine-structure line towards a lensed galaxy at redshift z = 5.2 to constrain temporal variations in the constant F = alpha^2/mu, where mu is the electron-to-proton mass ratio and alpha is the fine-structure constant. The relative change in F between z = 0 and z = 5.2, dFF = (F_obs - F_lab)/F_lab, is estimated from the radial velocity offset, dV = V_rot - V_fs, between the rotational transitions in carbon monoxide and the fine-structure transition in atomic carbon. Results. We find a conservative value dV = 1 +/- 5 km/s (1sigma C.L.), which when interpreted in terms of dFF gives dFF < 2x10^-5. Independent methods restrict the mu-variations at the level of dmm < 1x10^-7 at z = 0.7 (look-back time t_z0.7 = 6.4 Gyr). Assuming that temporal variations in mu, if any, are linear, this leads to an upper limit on dmm < 2x10^-7 at z = 5.2 (t_z5.2 = 12.9 Gyr). From both constraints on dFF and dmm, one obtains for the relative change in alpha the estimate daa < 8x10^-6, which is at present the tightest limit on daa at early cosmological epochs.

(Abridged) We use a high-resolution spectrum of the quasar HE0001-2340 observed with the UVES/VLT to measure Mg isotope abundances in the intervening absorption-line systems at high redshifts. Line profiles are prepared accounting for possible shifts between the individual exposures. Due to unique composition of the selected systems - the presence of several transitions of the same ion - we can test the local accuracy of the wavelength scale calibration which is the main source of errors in the sub-pixel line position measurements. In the system at zabs = 0.45 which is probably a fragment of the outflow caused by SN Ia explosion of high-metallicity white dwarf(s) we measured velocity shifts of MgII and MgI lines relative to other lines (FeI, FeII, CaI, CaII): Delta V(MgII) = -0.44 +/- 0.05 km/s and Delta V(MgI) = -0.17 +/- 0.17$ km/s. This translates into the isotopic ratio 24Mg:25Mg:26Mg = (19 +/- 11):(22 +/- 13):(59 +/- 6) with a strong relative overabundance of heavy Mg isotopes, (25Mg+26Mg)/24Mg = 4, as compared to the solar ratio 24Mg:25Mg:26Mg = 79:10:11, and (25Mg+26Mg)/24Mg = 0.3. At zabs = 1.58, we put a strong constraint on a putative variation of alpha: Delta alpha/alpha = (-1.5 +/- 2.6)x10^{-6} which is one of the most stringent limits obtained from optical spectra of QSOs. We reveal that the wavelength calibration in the range above 7500 A is subject to systematic wavelength-dependent drifts.

Systematic shifts of the line centers caused by turbulent motions and velocity gradients, possible non-thermal hyperfine structure populations, pressure and optical depth effects are shown to be lower than or about 1 m/s and thus can be neglected in the total error budget. The reproducibility of Delta V at the same facility (Effelsberg telescope) on a year-to-year basis is found to be very good. Since the frequencies of the inversion and rotational transitions have different sensitivities to variations in mu = m_e/m_p, the revealed non-zero Delta V may imply that mu changes when measured at high (terrestrial) and low (interstellar) matter densities as predicted by chameleon-like scalar field models - candidates to the dark energy carrier. Thus we are testing whether scalar field models have chameleon-type interactions with ordinary matter. The measured velocity offset corresponds to the ratio Delta mu/mu = (mu_space - mu_lab)/mu_lab of (26 +/- 3)x10^{-9} (1sigma).

This may indicate that the electron-to-proton mass ratio, mu = m_e/m_p, increases by 3x10^{-8} when measured under interstellar conditions with matter densities of more than 10 orders of magnitude lower as compared with laboratory (terrestrial) environments. We now map four molecular cores L1498, L1512, L1517, and L1400K selected from our previous sample in order to estimate systematic effects in Delta V due to possible velocity gradients. We find that in two cores L1498 and L1512 the NH3(1,1) and HC3N(2-1) transitions closely trace the same material and show an offset of Delta V = 26.9 +/- 1.2_stat +/- 3.0_sys m/s throughout the entire clouds. Spatial and temporal variations in the electron-to-proton mass ratio, mu, and in the fine-structure constant, alpha, are predicted in non-Standard models aimed to explain the nature of dark energy. Among them the so-called chameleon-like scalar field models predict strong dependence of masses and coupling constants on the local matter density. To explore such models we estimated the parameters Delta mu/mu = (mu_obs - mu_lab)/mu_lab and Delta alpha/alpha = (alpha_obs - alpha_lab)/alpha_lab in two essentially different environments, - terrestrial (high density) and interstellar (low density), - from radio astronomical observations of cold prestellar molecular cores in the disk of the Milky Way. We found that Delta mu/mu = (22 +/- 4_stat +/- 3_sys)x10^{-9}, and |Delta alpha/alpha| < 1.1x10^{-7}. If only a conservative upper limit is considered, then |Delta mu/mu| <= 3x10^{-8}. We also reviewed and re-analyzed the available data on the cosmological variation of alpha obtained from FeI and FeII systems in optical spectra of quasars. We show that statistically significant evidence for the changing alpha at the level of 10^{-6} has not been provided so far. The most stringent constraint on |Delta alpha/alpha| < 2x10^{-6} was found from the FeII system at z = 1.15 towards the bright quasar HE0515-4414. The limit of 2x10^{-6} corresponds to the utmost accuracy which can be reached with available to date optical facilities.

The majority of the systems (10 from 11) show abundance patterns which relate them to outflows from low and intermediate mass stars. All systems have sub-kpc linear sizes along the line-of-sight with many less than 20 pc. In several systems, silicon is deficient, presumably due to the depletion onto dust grains in the envelopes of dust-forming stars and the subsequent gas-dust separation. At any value of [C/H], nitrogen can be either deficient, [N/C]<0, or enhanced, [N/C]>0, which supposes that the nitrogen enrichment occurs irregularly. In some cases, the lines of MgII 2796, 2803 appear to be shifted, probably as a result of an enhanced content of heavy isotopes 25Mg and 26Mg in the absorbing gas relative to the solar isotopic composition. Seven absorbers are characterized by low mean ionization parameter U, log U<-2.3, among them only one system has a redshift z>2 whereas all others are found at z ~= 1.8. Comparing the space number density of metal-rich absorbers with the comoving density of star-forming galaxies at z ~= 2, we estimate that the circumgalactic volume of each galaxy is populated by 10^7 - 10^8 such absorbers with total mass <=1/100th of the stellar galactic mass. Possible effects of high metal content on the peak values of star-forming and AGN activities at z~2 are discussed.

Computational technique for inverse spectroscopic problems - Monte Carlo Inversion augmented by procedure of the spectral shape recovering and modified to account for the incomplete coverage of the light source. Results. The ionizing spectra responsible for the ionization structure of the NAL systems require an intensity depression at E > 4Ryd which is attributed to the HeII Lyman continuum opacity (tau^HeII_c ~ 1). A most likely source of this opacity is a quasar accretion disk wind. The corresponding column density of HI in the wind is estimated as a few times 10^16 cm^-2. This amount of neutral hydrogen should cause a weak continuum depression at lamb <= 912A (rest-frame), and a broad and shallow absorption in HI Ly-alpha. If metallicity of the wind is high enough, other resonance lines of OVI, NeVI-NeVIII, etc. are expected. In the analyzed QSO spectra we do observe broad (stretching over 1000s km/s) and shallow (tau << 1) absorption troughs of HI Ly-alpha and OVI 1031,1037A...

The Single Ion Differential alpha Measurement (SIDAM) method for measuring fine stucture variations (daa)and its figures of merit are illustrated together with the results produced by means of FeII absorption lines of QSO intervening systems. The method provides daa ~= -0.12(+/- 1.79) ppm (parts-per-million) at zabs = 1.15 towards HE 0515--4414 and daa = 5.66(+/-2.67) ppm at zabs= 1.84 towards Q 1101--264, which are so far the most accurate measurements for single systems. SIDAM analysis for 3 systems from the Chand et al. (2004) sample provides inconsistent results which we interpret as due to calibration errors of the Chand et al. data at the level of about 10 ppm. In one system evidence for photo-ionization Doppler shift between MgII and FeII lines is found. This evidence has important bearings on the Many Multiplet method where the signal for daa variability is carried mainly by systems involving MgII absorbers. Some correlations are also found in the Murphy et al. sample which suggest larger errors than previously reported. Thus, we consider unlikely that both the Chand et al. and Murphy et al. datasets could provide an estimate of daa with an accuracy at the level of 1 ppm. The Single Ion Differential alpha Measurement (SIDAM) procedure and the Delta chi^2 method are used to set constraints on Delta alpha/alpha. We have found a relative radial velocity shift between the 1608 A and 2382,2600 A lines of Delta v = -180 +/- 85 m/s (both random and systematic errors are included), which, if real, would correspond to Delta alpha/alpha = (5.4 +/- 2.5) 10^{-6} (1sigma C.L.). Considering the strong implications of a such variability, additional observations with comparable accuracy at redshift z ~ 1.8 are required to confirm this result.

The systems are analyzed by means of the Monte Carlo Inversion method completed with the spectral shape recovering procedure. The UVB spectral shape fluctuates at 2.4 < z < 2.9 mostly due to radiative transfer processes in the clumpy IGM. At z < 1.8, the IGM becomes almost transparent both in the HI and HeII Lyman continua and the variability of the spectral shape comes from diversity of spectral indices describing the QSO/AGN intrinsic radiation. At z > 2.4, the recovered spectral shapes show intensity depression between 3 and 4 Ryd due to HeII Ly-alpha absorption in the IGM clouds (line blanketing) and continuous medium (true Gunn-Petersen effect). The mean HeII Ly-alpha opacity estimated from the depth of this depression corresponds within 1-2sigma to the values directly measured from the HI/HeII Ly-alpha forest towards the quasars studied. The observed scatter in eta = N(HeII)/N(HI) and anti-correlation between N(HI) and eta can be explained by the combined action of variable spectral softness and differences in the mean gas density between the absorbing clouds. Neither of the recovered spectral shapes show features which can be attributed to the putative input of radiation from soft sources like starburst galaxies.

We report on high resolution spectra of the bright QSO HS0747+4259 (zem = 1.90, V = 15.8) observed to search for intermediate redshift OVI absorption systems. The spectra were obtained by means of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) at the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) at the W. M. Keck telescope. We identify 16 OVI systems in the range 1.07 <= z <= 1.87. Among them, six systems with zabs = 1.46-1.8 exhibit a sufficient number of lines of different ionic transitions to estimate the shape of the ionizing radiation field in the range 1 Ryd < E < 10 Ryd. All recovered UV ionizing spectra are characterized by the enhanced intensity at E > 3 Ryd compared to the model spectrum of Haardt and Madau (1996). This is in line with the observational evidence of a deficiency of strong Ly-alpha absorbers with N(HI) > 10^{15} cm^{-2}, at z < 2. The UV background shows significant local variations: the spectral shape estimated at z = 1.59 differs from that obtained at z = 1.81 and 1.73. A possible cause of these variations is the presence of a QSO/AGN at z ~= 1.54-1.59 close to the line of sight. No features favoring the input of stellar radiation to the ionizing background are detected, limiting the escape fraction of the galactic UV photons to f_esc < 0.05.

The procedure is based on the response surface methodology from the theory of experimental design. The shape of the recovered UV background at z~3 shows a significant intensity decrease between 3 and 4 Ryd compared to the metagalactic spectrum of Haardt & Madau (1996). This decrease is interpreted as produced by HeII Gunn-Peterson effect. There are no features indicating a contribution from galaxies to the UV background which is therefore dominated by QSOs at z~3.

We report on detailed Monte Carlo inversion analysis of five OVI systems from the spectrum of the bright quasar HE 0515-4414 (z_e = 1.71). The associated system at z_a = 1.697 with the neutral hydrogen column density N(HI)= 4.4 10^{13} cm^{-2} shows pronounced absorption from highly ionized transitions of CIII, CIV, NV, OVI, SiIV, and probably SVI. We found that only a power law type ionizing spectrum (J_nu propto nu^{-1.5}) is consistent with the observed sample of the line profiles, i.e. the system is definitely intrinsic. The relative metal abundances give almost the solar pattern and the metallicity of about 5 times solar. The system originates in a thin shell of the line-of-sight thickness L <= 16 pc. Two OVI systems at z_a = 1.674 ([C/H] = -1.6) and 1.602 ([O/H] = -1.1), arising in intervening halos, have linear sizes of L = 3-14 kpc and 17 kpc, respectively. Absorption systems at z_a = 1.385 ([C/H] = -0.3, L = 1.7-2.5 kpc) and z_a = 1.667 ([C/H] = -0.5, L = 1 kpc) exhibit characteristics very similar to that observed in metal-enriched high velocity clouds in the Milky Way.These systems are probably embedded in extremely metal-poor halos with [C/H] < -2.4 (z_a = 1.667) and [C/H] < -3.7 (z_a = 1.385). We also found two additional extremely metal-poor Ly-alpha systems at z_a = 1.500 and 1.681 with, respectively, N(HI) = 1.7 10^{15} and 1.8 10^{15} cm^{-2} and [C/H] < -4.0 and <-3.0, - an indication that the distribution of metals in the metagalactic medium is utterly patchy. Our results show that the ionization states in the analyzed OVI absorbers, ranging from z = 1.4 to 1.7, can be maintained by photoionization only and that the fraction of the shock-heated hot gas with temperature T > 10^5 K is negligible in these systems.

We report on detailed Monte Carlo inversion analysis of the Lyman limit system observed at z = 2.917 in the VLT/UVES spectrum of the quasar HE 0940-1050. Metal absorption lines of carbon and silicon in three ionization stages and numerous atomic hydrogen lines have been analyzed simultaneously. It is found that in order to match the observations, the shape of the ultraviolet background ionizing spectrum of Haardt & Madau (1996) should be modified: a spectrum with a higher intensity of the emission feature at 3 Ryd is required. It is also found that synthetic galactic spectra (or different mixtures of them with power law spectra) cannot reproduce the observations, indicating that the stellar contribution to the ionizing background is negligible at z ~= 3. For the first time a very low carbon abundance of [C/H] = -2.93+/-0.13 and the abundance ratio [Si/C] = 0.35+/-0.15 are directly measured in the Lyman limit system with N(H I) = 3.2 10^{17} cm^{-2}. If the absorber at z = 2.917 provides an example of a pristine gas enriched by the nucleosynthetic products of early generations of stars, then the measured value of [Si/C] seems to indicate that the initial mass functions for these stellar populations are constrained to intermediate masses, M_up <= 25M_solar.

Combined with the results from a previous work, the analyzed LLSs show that they are a heterogeneous population originating in different environments. A functional dependence of the line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_v on the absorber size L is confirmed: the majority of the analyzed systems follow the scaling relation sigma_v ~ (N_H L)^{0.3} (with N_H being the total gas column density). This means that most absorbers may be related to virialized systems like galaxies or their halos. Previously noted enhancement of the metal content in small size systems is also confirmed: metallicities of Z ~ (1/3-1/2)Z_solar are found in systems with L < 0.4 kpc, whereas we observe much lower metal abundances in systems with larger linear sizes. For the first time in LLSs, a pronounced [alpha-element/iron-peak] enrichment is revealed: the absorber at z = 2.21 shows [O/Fe] = 0.65+/-0.11, [Si/Fe] = 0.51+/-0.11, and [Mg/Fe] = 0.38+/-0.11. Several absorption systems exhibit characteristics which are very similar to that observed in high-velocity clouds in the Milky Way and may be considered as high-redshift counterparts of Galactic HVCs.

The metal line profiles of different ions observed in high HI column density systems [N(HI) > 10^{16} cm^{-2}] in quasar spectra can be used to constrain the ionization structure and kinematic characteristics of the absorbers. For these purposes, a modified Monte Carlo Inversion (MCI) procedure was applied to the study of three absorption systems in the spectrum of the HDF-South quasar J2233-606 obtained with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT/Kueyen telescope. The MCI does not confirm variations of metal abundances within separate systems which were discussed in the literature. Instead, we found that an assumption of a homogeneous metal content and a unique photoionizing background is sufficient to describe the observed complex metal profiles. It was also found that the linear size L and the line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_v measured within the absorbers obey a scaling relation, namely, sigma_v increases with increasing L, and that metal abundance is inversely proportional to the linear size of the system: the highest metallicity was measured in the system with the smallest L.

We show that the difference between the Ar and Si relative abundance ratio derived from FUSE absorption spectra and from the HII regions of I Zw 18 is a consequence of the microturbulent analysis applied to the absorption spectra. FUSE observations were performed with a large entrance aperture which fully covered the galaxy. This means that the observed profiles are averaged over the full body of I Zw 18, implying that large-scale velocity fields influence the absorption - line profiles. Taking this into account, we show that the absorption spectra are consistent with the same metal abundances as those derived from the HII regions. It follows that no significant ionization correction as suggested by Izotov and collaborators to describe metal contents in damped Ly-alpha systems (DLA) is required to model abundances in the neutral gas of I Zw 18 (a local DLA system). Using a mesoturbulent approach and applying the generalized radiative transfer equation to the ArI1048 and SiII1020 lines observed by Vidal-Madjar et al., we found that the profiles may be reproduced with log (Ar/Si) ~= - 0.8 and N(SiII) ~= 4 10^{15} cm^{-2}.

A new method, based on the simulated annealing algorithm and aimed at the inverse problem in the analysis of intergalactic (interstellar) complex spectra of hydrogen and metal lines, is presented. We consider the process of line formation in clumpy stochastic media accounting for fluctuating velocity and density fields (mesoturbulence). This approach generalizes our previous Reverse Monte Carlo and Entropy-Regularized Minimization methods which were applied to velocity fluctuations only. The method allows one to estimate, from an observed system of spectral lines, both the physical parameters of the absorbing gas and appropriate structures of the velocity and density distributions along the line of sight. The validity of the computational procedure is demonstrated using a series of synthetic spectra that emulate the up-to-date best quality data. HI, CII, SiII, CIV, SiIV, and OVI lines, exhibiting complex profiles, were fitted simultaneously. The adopted physical parameters have been recovered with a sufficiently high accuracy. A very low primordial deuterium abundance of D/H = 1.5 10^{-5} has recently been proposed by Molaro et al. in the Lyman limit system with log(N_HI) = 18.1 cm^{-2} at z_a = 3.514 towards the quasar APM08279+5255. The D/H value was estimated through the standard Voigt fitting procedure utilizing a simple one-component model of the absorbing region. The authors assumed, however, that `a more complex structure for the hydrogen cloud with somewhat ad hoc components would allow a higher D/H'. We have investigated this system using our new Monte Carlo inversion procedure which allows us to recover not only the physical parameters but also the velocity and density distributions along the line of sight. The absorption lines of HI, CII, CIV, SiIII, and SiIV were analyzed simultaneously. The result obtained shows a considerably lower neutral hydrogen column density log(N_HI) = 15.7 cm^{-2}. Hence, the measurement of the deuterium abundance in this system is rather uncertain. We find that the asymmetric blue wing of the hydrogen Ly-alpha absorption is readily explained by HI alone. Thus, up to now, deuterium was detected in only four QSO spectra (Q1937-1009, Q1009+2956, Q0130-4021, and Q1718+4807) and all of them are in concordance with D/H = 4 10^{-5}.

We present a new method for recovering the kinetic temperature of the intervening diffuse gas to an accuracy of 10%. The method is based on the comparison of unsaturated absorption-line profiles of two species with different atomic weights. The species are assumed to have the same temperature and bulk motion within the absorbing region. The computational technique involves the Fourier transform of the absorption profiles and the consequent Entropy-Regularized chi^2-Minimization [ERM] to estimate the model parameters. The procedure is tested using synthetic spectra of CII, SiII and FeII ions. The comparison with the standard Voigt fitting analysis is performed and it is shown that the Voigt deconvolution of the complex absorption-line profiles may result in estimated temperatures which are not physical. We also successfully analyze Keck telescope spectra of CII1334 and SiII1260 lines observed at the redshift z = 3.572 toward the quasar Q1937--1009 by Tytler {\it et al.}.
