Objective: Cortico-muscular communication patterns are instrumental in understanding movement control. Estimating significant causal relationships between motor cortex electroencephalogram (EEG) and surface electromyogram (sEMG) from concurrently active muscles presents a formidable challenge since the relevant processes underlying muscle control are typically weak in comparison to measurement noise and background activities. Methodology: In this paper, a novel framework is proposed to simultaneously estimate the order of the autoregressive model of cortico-muscular interactions along with the parameters while enforcing stationarity condition in a convex program to ensure global optimality. The proposed method is further extended to a non-convex program to account for the presence of measurement noise in the recorded signals by introducing a wavelet sparsity assumption on the excitation noise in the model. Results: The proposed methodology is validated using both simulated data and neurophysiological signals. In case of simulated data, the performance of the proposed methods has been compared with the benchmark approaches in terms of order identification, computational efficiency, and goodness of fit in relation to various noise levels. In case of physiological signals our proposed methods are compared against the state-of-the-art approaches in terms of the ability to detect Granger causality. Significance: The proposed methods are shown to be effective in handling stationarity and measurement noise assumptions, revealing significant causal interactions from brain to muscles and vice versa.

The present study describes a facile route of zinc oxide (ZnO) grows using the solution-dependent electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) method at temperatures ranging from 300 °C - 500 °C. In this work, zinc chloride (ZnCl2) was dissolved in ethanol (CH3CH2OH) to prepare the 0.1 M concentration of 20 ml for spray solution by ESD. Adding different deionized water (H2O) ratio, three different solutions were prepared. The results reveal that adding H2O ration, suppressing the c-axis crystal growth of ZnO thin films. The adhesion of anions was believed to be responsible for this suppression. XRD texture analysis examined the preferred orientations of the (100) and (002) planes of the ZnO thin films. Microstructural parameters namely, lattice parameters, bond length, positional parameters, full width at half maximum, crystallite sizes, lattice strain, and lattice dislocation density, are investigated. This research marks a turning point in cost-effective industrial and commercial applications for ESD-deposited electronics.

Due to the lack of automated methods, to diagnose cerebrovascular disease, time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (TOF-MRA) is assessed visually, making it time-consuming. The commonly used encoder-decoder architectures for cerebrovascular segmentation utilize redundant features, eventually leading to the extraction of low-level features multiple times. Additionally, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) suffer from performance degradation when the batch size is small, and deeper networks experience the vanishing gradient problem. Methods: In this paper, we attempt to solve these limitations and propose the 3D cerebrovascular attention UNet method, named CV-AttentionUNet, for precise extraction of brain vessel images. We proposed a sequence of preprocessing techniques followed by deeply supervised UNet to improve the accuracy of segmentation of the brain vessels leading to a stroke. To combine the low and high semantics, we applied the attention mechanism. This mechanism focuses on relevant associations and neglects irrelevant anatomical information. Furthermore, the inclusion of deep supervision incorporates different levels of features that prove to be beneficial for network convergence. Results: We demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method by cross-validating with an unlabeled dataset, which was further labeled by us. We believe that the novelty of this algorithm lies in its ability to perform well on both labeled and unlabeled data with image processing-based enhancement. The results indicate that our method performed better than the existing state-of-the-art methods on the TubeTK dataset. Conclusion: The proposed method will help in accurate segmentation of cerebrovascular structure leading to stroke

Surface flashover across insulator in vacuum is a destructive plasma discharge which undermines the behaviors of a range of applications in electrical engineering, particle physics, space engineering, etc. This phenomenon is widely modeled by the particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation, here the continuum and kinetic simulation method is first proposed and implemented as an alternative solution for flashover modeling, aiming for the prevention of the unfavorable particle noises in PIC models. The 1D2V (one dimension in space, two dimensions in velocity) kinetic simulation model is constructed. Modeling setup, physical assumptions, and simulation algorithm are presented in detail, and a comparison with the well-known secondary electron emission avalanche (SEEA) analytical expression and existing PIC simulation is made. Obtained kinetic simulation results are consistent with the analytical prediction, and feature noise-free data of surface charge density as well as particle fluxes of primary and secondary electrons. Discrepancies between the two simulation models and analytical predictions are explained. The code is convenient for updating to include additional physical processes, and possible implementations of outgassing and extra plasma species for final breakdown stage are discussed. The proposed continuum and kinetic approach is expected to inspire future flashover modeling studies for the understanding and mitigation.

The superconducting properties and structural parameters, including the Grüneisen parameter (γG), of the BiCh2-based (Ch: S, Se) layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2-xSex were investigated. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) increased with increasing Se concentration (x), and bulk superconductivity was induced by Se substitution. γG exhibited a larger value when x greater than 0.4, where the superconducting properties were improved. These results suggest that the increase of lattice anharmonicity is preferable for superconductivity in LaO0.5F0.5BiS2-xSex. The discussion includes data for related superconductors REO0.5F0.5BiS2 (RE = Pr, Nd), where a positive correlation between γG and Tc is revealed for Se-poor samples. In addition, specific heat analyses suggest the presence of a low-energy optical phonon mode for LaO0.5F0.5BiS2-xSex.

We studied Grüneisen parameter (γG) to investigate lattice anharmonicity in a layered BiS2-based superconductor system REO1-xFxBiS2 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd), where in-plane chemical pressure was tuned by substituting the RE elements. With increasing in-plane chemical pressure, bulk modulus remarkably increases, and a high γG is observed for RE = Nd. The dependence of γG on in-plane chemical pressure exhibits a good correlation with Tc, and a higher Tc is achieved when γG is large for RE = Nd. In addition, γG shows a slight decrease by a decrease of F concentration (x) in REO1-xFxBiS2. Our results show that the anharmonic vibration of Bi along the c-axis is present in REO1-xFxBiS2, and the enhancement of the anharmonicity is positively linked to superconducting Tc and pairing mechanisms.

In functional materials like thermoelectric materials and superconductors, the interplay between functionality, electronic structure, and phonon characteristics is one of the key factors to improve functionality and to understand the mechanisms. In the first part of this article, we briefly review investigations on lattice anharmonicity in functional materials by Grüneisen parameter (γG). One can find that the γG can be a good scale for large lattice anharmonicity and for detecting a change in anharmonicity amplitude in functional materials. Then, we show original results on estimation of γG for recently-developed high-entropy-alloy-type (HEA-type) functional materials with a layered structure and a NaCl-type structure. As a common trend between those two systems with two- and three-dimensional structures, we find that γG increases by a slight increase in configurational entropy of mixing (ΔSmix), and then γG decreases with increasing ΔSmix in high-entropy region.

This paper presents a biometric user authentication system based on an ensemble design that employs face and voice recognition classifiers. The design approach entails development and performance evaluation of individual classifiers for face and voice recognition and subsequent integration of the two within an ensemble framework. Performance evaluation employed three benchmark datasets, which are NIST Feret face, Yale Extended face, and ELSDSR voice. Performance evaluation of the ensemble design on the three benchmark datasets indicates that the bimodal authentication system offers significant improvements for accuracy, precision, true negative rate, and true positive rate metrics at or above 99% while generating minimal false positive and negative rates of less than 1%.

In this paper, we present a mathematical and numerical model for blood solidification and its rupture in stenosed arteries. The interaction between the blood flow and an existing stenosis in the arterial wall is modeled as a three dimensional fluid-structure interaction problem. The blood is assumed to be a non-Newtonian incompressible fluid with a time-dependent viscosity that obeys a modified Carreau's model and the flow dynamics is described by the Navier-Stokes equations. Whereas, the arterial wall is considered a hyperelastic material whose displacement satisfies the quasi-static equilibrium equations. Numerical simulations are performed using FreeFem++ on a two dimensional domain. We investigate the behavior of the viscosity of blood, its speed and the maximum shear stress. From the numerical results, blood recirculation zones have been identified. Moreover, a zone of the blood of high viscosity and low speed has been observed directly after the stenosis in the flow direction. This zone may correspond to a blood accumulation and then solidification zone that is subjected to shear stress by the blood flow and to forces exerted by the artery wall deformation. Therefore, this zone is thought to break and then to release a blood clot that leads to the occlusion of small arterioles.

We are interested in studying an unsteady fluid-structure interaction problem in a three-dimensional space. We consider a homogeneous Newtonian fluid which is modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations. Whereas the motion of the structure is described by the quasi-incompressible non-linear Saint Venant-Kirchhoff model. We establish the local in time existence and uniqueness of solution for this model. For this sake, first we rewrite the non-linearity of the elastodynamic equation in an explicit way. Then, a linearized problem is introduced in the Lagrangian reference configuration and we prove that it admits a unique solution. Based on the a priori estimates on the solution of this problem together with the fixed point theorem we prove that the non-linear problem admits a unique local in time solution. At last, by the inf-sup condition we reach to the existence of the fluid pressure.

Today's recommender systems are criticized for recommending items that are too obvious to arouse users' interest. That's why the recommender systems research community has advocated some "beyond accuracy" evaluation metrics such as novelty, diversity, coverage, and serendipity with the hope of promoting information discovery and sustain users' interest over a long period of time. While bringing in new perspectives, most of these evaluation metrics have not considered individual users' difference: an open-minded user may favor highly novel or diversified recommendations whereas a conservative user's appetite for novelty or diversity may not be that large. In this paper, we developed a model to approximate an individual's curiosity distribution over different levels of stimuli guided by the well-known Wundt curve in Psychology. We measured an item's surprise level to assess the stimulation level and whether it is in the range of the user's appetite for stimulus. We then proposed a recommendation system framework that considers both user preference and appetite for stimulus where the curiosity is maximally aroused. Our framework differs from a typical recommender system in that it leverages human's curiosity to promote intrinsic interest with the system. A series of evaluation experiments have been conducted to show that our framework is able to rank higher the items with not only high ratings but also high response likelihood. The recommendation list generated by our algorithm has higher potential of inspiring user curiosity compared to traditional approaches. The personalization factor for assessing the stimulus (surprise) strength further helps the recommender achieve smaller (better) inter-user similarity.

Local minimum appearing in the interionic pair interactions, when derived from local model pseudopotential, for Al (and some other polyvalent metals) remains as a long standing problem of clear understanding although some attempts are made by different authors. The origin of this feature of local minimum is systematically investigated in this article, considering both the chemical valence, Z, and the core radius, $R_{c}$ as variables. Ashcroft's empty core model is used to describe the interionic pair-potential, because, it depends on these two parameters only. Results of this investigation show that monovalent metals do not exhibit a local minimum at small $r$ but some polyvalent metals does where, the core radius plays the major role.

The interionic interaction and a reference liquid are the fundamental components of the theory. The interionic interaction is described by a local pseudopotential. A liquid of hard spheres (HS) of two different effective diametres is used to describe the reference system for alloys. The results of the calculations for energy of mixing agree well with the available experimental data. Calculation of entropy of mixing is parameter free and, the agreement with experiment, in this case, is found to be fairly good.
