There has been an enormous interest in analysing and modelling periodic time series. The research on periodically integrated autoregressive (PIAR) models which capture the periodic structure and the presence of unit roots is widely applied in environmental, financial and energy areas. In this paper, we propose a multi-companion method which uses the eigen information of the multi-companion matrix in the multi-companion representation of PIAR models. The method enables the estimation and forecasting of PIAR models with a single, two and multiple unit roots. We show that the parameters of PIAR models can be represented in terms of the eigen information of the multi-companion matrix. Consequently, the estimation can be conducted using the eigen information, rather than directly estimating the parameters of PIAR models. A Monte Carlo experiment and an application are provided to illustrate the robustness and effectiveness of the multi-companion method.

We propose a parametrization of autoregressive unit roots ARMA models (ARUMA) with partial autocorrelation coefficients to specify the autoregressive and integrated part of the model. We obtain the algebraic properties of the partial autocorrelations in the context of unit roots. We propose a parametrization of autoregressive unit roots ARMA models (ARUMA) with partial autocorrelation coefficients to specify the autoregressive and integrated part of the model. We obtain the algebraic properties of the partial autocorrelations in the context of unit roots. The main result is that if a partial autocorrelation sequence contains some values equal to 1 or -1, then it can be split at these values into sub-sequences each of which represents the partial autocorrelations of a factor of the overall polynomial on the left-hand side of the model. A separate paper will discuss the details of the estimation procedure and its properties. An implementation is provided by Boshnakov and Halliday (2022) R package sarima, https://cran.r-project.org/package=sarima (function sarima).

With the capacity of capturing the behaviour in the tails of the distribution, the Student t MAR model provides a more flexible modelling framework than its Gaussian counterpart, leading to fitted models with fewer parameters and of easier interpretation. The degrees of freedom are also treated as random variables, and hence are included in the estimation process.

A signed power transformation with application to white noise testing
Authors:
Georgi N. Boshnakov,

Abstract:
We show that signed power transforms of some ARCH-type processes give ARCH-type processes. The class of ARCH-type models for which this property holds contains many common ARCH and GARCH models. The results can be useful in testing for white noise when fourth moments don't exist and detecting white noise that is not ARCH-type.

Mixture autoregressive (MAR) models provide a flexible way to model time series with predictive distributions which depend on the recent history of the process and are able to accommodate asymmetry and multimodality. Bayesian inference for such models offers the additional advantage of incorporating the uncertainty in the estimated models into the predictions. We introduce a new way of sampling from the posterior distribution of the parameters of MAR models which allows for covering the complete parameter space of the models, unlike previous approaches. We also propose a relabelling algorithm to deal a posteriori with label switching. We apply our new method to simulated and real datasets, discuss the accuracy and performance of our new method, as well as its advantages over previous studies. The idea of density forecasting using MCMC output is also introduced.

Obtaining reliable estimates of conditional covariance matrices is an important task of heteroskedastic multivariate time series. In portfolio optimization and financial risk management, it is crucial to provide measures of uncertainty and risk as accurately as possible. We propose using mixture vector autoregressive (MVAR) models for portfolio optimization. Combining a mixture of distributions that depend on the recent history of the process, MVAR models can accommodate asymmetry, multimodality, heteroskedasticity and cross-correlation in multivariate time series data. For mixtures of Normal components, we exploit a property of the multivariate Normal distribution to obtain explicit formulas of conditional predictive distributions of returns on a portfolio of assets. After showing how the method works, we perform a comparison with other relevant multivariate time series models on real stock return data.

This paper introduces multivariate Poisson autoregressive models with exogenous covariates (PoARX) for modelling multivariate time series of counts. We obtain conditions for the PoARX process to be stationary and ergodic before proposing a computationally efficient procedure for estimation of parameters by the method of inference functions (IFM) and obtaining asymptotic normality of these estimators. Lastly, we demonstrate an application to count data for the number of people entering and exiting a building, and show how the different aspects of the model combine to produce a strong predictive model. We conclude by suggesting some further areas of application and by listing directions for future work.
