Random fluctuations can lead to cooperative effects in complex systems. We here report the experimental observation of noise-induced quantum synchronization in a chain of superconducting transmon qubits with nearest-neighbor interactions. The application of Gaussian white noise to a single site leads to synchronous oscillations in the entire chain. We show that the two synchronized end qubits are entangled, with nonzero concurrence, and that they belong to a class of generalized Bell states known as maximally entangled mixed states, whose entanglement cannot be increased by any global unitary. We further demonstrate the stability against frequency detuning of both synchronization and entanglement by determining the corresponding generalized Arnold tongue diagrams. Our results highlight the constructive influence of noise in a quantum many-body system and uncover the potential role of synchronization for mixed-state quantum information science.

Sharing and receiving information plays a pivotal role in science and technology. Quantum communication relies on the principles of quantum mechanics to transmit information in a nonclassical manner. Existing quantum communication protocols are commonly based on shared entangled states between sender and receiver, while the transmitting medium is classical. We here demonstrate that information transfer may be enhanced in a quantum correlated medium without entanglement distribution. We concretely show that nonclassical correlations, with nonzero discord, between the first two spins of a spin chain that acts as a quantum wire can increase the information flow and reduce the propagation time. We relate this effect to the breaking of the spatial symmetry of the out-of-time-order correlator that characterizes the spread of information through the medium.

Abstract:
Measurements are able to fundamentally affect quantum dynamics. We here show that a continuously measured quantum many-body system can undergo a spontaneous transition from asynchronous stochastic dynamics to noise-free stable synchronization at the level of single trajectories. We formulate general criteria for this quantum phenomenon to occur, and demonstrate that the number of synchronized real…

Measurements are able to fundamentally affect quantum dynamics. We here show that a continuously measured quantum many-body system can undergo a spontaneous transition from asynchronous stochastic dynamics to noise-free stable synchronization at the level of single trajectories. We formulate general criteria for this quantum phenomenon to occur, and demonstrate that the number of synchronized realizations can be controlled from none to all. We additionally find that ergodicity is typically broken, since time and ensemble averages may exhibit radically different synchronization behavior. We further introduce a quantum type of multiplexing that involves individual trajectories with distinct synchronization frequencies. Measurement-induced synchronization appears as a genuine nonclassical form of synchrony that exploits quantum superpositions.

Synchronization is a widespread phenomenon in science and technology. We here study noise-induced synchronization in a quantum spin chain subjected to local Gaussian white noise. We demonstrate stable (anti)synchronization between the endpoint magnetizations of a quantum $XY$ model with transverse field of arbitrary length. Remarkably, we show that noise applied to a single spin suffices to reach stable (anti)synchronization, and demonstrate that the two synchronized end spins are entangled. We additionally determine the optimal noise amplitude that leads to the fastest synchronization along the chain, and further compare the optimal synchronization speed to the fundamental Lieb-Robinson bound for information propagation.
