Multiple photon addition and subtraction applied to multi-mode thermal and sub-Poissonian fields as well as twin beams is mutually compared using one experimental setup. Twin beams with tight spatial correlations detected by an intensified CCD camera with high spatial resolution are used to prepare the initial fields. Up to three photons are added or subtracted to arrive at the nonclassical and non-Gaussian states. Only the photon-subtracted thermal states remain classical. In general, the experimental photon-added states exhibit greater nonclassicality and non-Gaussianity than the comparable photon-subtracted states. Once photons are added or subtracted in twin beams, both processes result in comparable properties of the obtained states owing to twin-beam photon pairing.

The identification of nonclassical features of multiphoton quantum states represents a task of the utmost importance in the development of many quantum photonic technologies. Under realistic experimental conditions, a photonic quantum state gets affected by its interaction with several nonideal opto-electronic devices, including those used to guide, detect or characterize it. The result of such noisy interaction is that the nonclassical features of the original quantum state get considerably reduced or are completely absent in the detected, final state. In this work, the self-learning features of artificial neural networks are exploited to experimentally show that the nonclassicality of multiphoton quantum states can be assessed and fully characterized, even in the cases in which the nonclassical features are concealed by the measuring devices. Our work paves the way toward artificial-intelligence-assisted experimental-setup characterization, as well as smart quantum-state nonclassicality identification.

We analyze the existence and degeneracies of quantum exceptional, diabolical, and hybrid points of simple bosonic systems, composed of up to six modes with dam** and/or amplification and exhibiting nonconventional dynamics. They involve the configurations in which the dynamics typical for PT-symmetric systems is observed only in a subspace of the whole Liouville space of the system states (nonconventional PT-symmetric dynamics) as well as those containing unidirectional coupling. The system dynamics described by quadratic non-Hermitian Hamiltonians is governed by the Heisenberg-Langevin equations. Conditions for the observation of inherited quantum hybrid points with up to sixth-order exceptional and second-order diabolical degeneracies are revealed, though relevant only for short-time dynamics. This raises the question of whether higher-order inherited singularities exist in bosonic systems that exhibit physically meaningful behavior at arbitrary times. On the other hand, for short times, unidirectional coupling of various types enables the concatenation of simple bosonic systems with second- and third-order exceptional degeneracies on demand. This approach allows for the creation of arbitrarily high exceptional degeneracies observed in systems with diverse structures. Methods for numerical identifying the quantum exceptional and hybrid points, and determining their degeneracies are discussed. Rich dynamics of higher-order field-operator moments is analyzed from the point of view of the presence of exceptional and diabolical points with their degeneracies in general.

Conditions for the observation of inherited quantum hybrid points, observed directly in the dynamics of field operators, having up to third-order exceptional and second-order diabolical degeneracies are revealed. Exceptional and diabolical genuine points and their degeneracies observed in the dynamics of second-order field-operator moments are analyzed. Surprisingly, exceptional degeneracies of only second and third orders are revealed. Nevertheless the analyzed bosonic systems exhibit rich dynamics, also owing to their common second-order diabolical degeneracies.

We analyse two quantum systems with hidden parity-time (PT) symmetry: one is an optical device, whereas another is a superconducting microwave-frequency device. To investigate their symmetry, we introduce an equilibrium frame, in which loss and gain terms for a given Hamiltonian are balanced. We show that the non-Hermitian Hamiltonians of both systems can be tuned to reach an exceptional point (EP), i.e., the point in parameter space at which a transition from broken to unbroken hidden PT symmetry takes place. We calculate a degeneracy of a Liouvillian superoperator, which is called the Liouvillian exceptional point (LEP), and show that, in the optical domain, LEP is equivalent to EP obtained from the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (HEP). We also report breaking the equivalence between LEP and HEP by a non-zero number of thermal photons for the microwave-frequency system.

We show that the loss of nonclassicality (including quantum entanglement) cannot be compensated by the (incoherent) amplification of PT-symmetric systems. We address this problem by manipulating the quantum fluctuating forces in the Heisenberg-Langevin approach. Specifically, we analyze the dynamics of two nonlinearly coupled oscillator modes in a PT-symmetric system. An analytical solution allows us to separate the contribution of reservoir fluctuations from the evolution of quantum statistical properties of the modes. In general, as reservoir fluctuations act constantly, the complete loss of nonclassicality and entanglement is observed for long times. To elucidate the role of reservoir fluctuations in a long-time evolution of nonclassicality and entanglement, we consider and compare the predictions from two alternative models in which no fatal long-time detrimental effects on the nonclassicality and entanglement are observed. This is so as, in the first semiclassical model, no reservoir fluctuations are considered at all. This, however, violates the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The second, more elaborated, model obeys the fluctuation-dissipation relations as it partly involves reservoir fluctuations. However, to prevent from the above long-time detrimental effects, the reservoir fluctuations have to be endowed with the nonphysical properties of a sink model. In both models, additional incorporation of the omitted reservoir fluctuations results in their physically consistent behavior. This behavior, however, predicts the gradual loss of the nonclassicality and entanglement. Thus the effects of reservoir fluctuations related to dam** cannot be compensated by those related to amplification.

Identification, and subsequent quantification of quantum correlations, is critical for understanding, controlling, and engineering quantum devices and processes. We derive and implement a general method to quantify various forms of quantum correlations using solely the experimental intensity moments up to the fourth order. This is possible as these moments allow for an exact determination of the global and marginal impurities of two-beam Gaussian fields. This leads to the determination of steering, tight lower and upper bounds for the negativity, and the Kullback-Leibler divergence used as a quantifier of state nonseparability. The principal squeezing variances are determined as well using the intensity moments. The approach is demonstrated on the experimental twin beams with increasing intensity and the squeezed super-Gaussian beams composed of photon pairs. Our method is readily applicable to multibeam Gaussian fields to characterize their quantum correlations.

We describe a novel type of blockade in a hybrid mode generated by linear coupling of photonic and phononic modes. We refer to this effect as hybrid photon-phonon blockade and show how it can be generated and detected in a driven nonlinear optomechanical superconducting system. Thus, we study boson-number correlations in the photon, phonon, and hybrid modes in linearly coupled microwave and mechanical resonators with a superconducting qubit inserted in one of them. We find such system parameters for which we observe eight types of different combinations of either blockade or tunnelling effects (defined via the sub- and super-Poissonian statistics, respectively) for photons, phonons, and hybrid bosons. In particular, we find that the hybrid photon-phonon blockade can be generated by mixing the photonic and phononic modes which do not exhibit blockade.

Equivalent approaches to determine eigenfrequencies of the Liouvillians of open quantum systems are discussed using the solution of the Heisenberg-Langevin equations and the corresponding equations for operator moments. A simple damped two-level atom is analyzed to demonstrate the equivalence of both approaches. The suggested method is used to reveal the structure as well as eigenfrequencies of the dynamics matrices of the corresponding equations of motion and their degeneracies for interacting bosonic modes described by general quadratic Hamiltonians. Quantum Liouvillian exceptional and diabolical points and their degeneracies are explicitly discussed for the case of two modes. Quantum hybrid diabolical exceptional points (inherited, genuine, and induced) and hidden exceptional points, which are not recognized directly in amplitude spectra, are observed. The presented approach via the Heisenberg-Langevin equations paves the general way to a detailed analysis of quantum exceptional and diabolical points in infinitely dimensional open quantum systems.

Moreover, the beams exhibit the sub-Poissonian photon-number statistics in their marginal distributions under suitable conditions. The postselected fields with the increasing mean photon numbers are reconstructed from the experimental photocount histograms by the maximum likelihood approach. Also a suitable Gaussian fit of both original twin beams and simulation of the postselection process are applied to arrive at the corresponding photon-number distributions. Their nonclassical properties are analyzed by suitable nonclassicality criteria and quantified by the corresponding nonclassicality depths. A quantum model of the Raman process with the independent Stokes and anti-Stokes nonlinear interactions is developed to study nonclassical correlations between the photons in the Stokes and anti-Stokes fields. The role of the laser pump amplitude, the ratio of the Stokes and anti-Stokes coupling constants and the population and losses of the vibrational mode in forming the correlations is elucidated. The $ g^{(2)} $ intensity cross-correlation function, noise-reduction-factor, two-mode principal squeezing variance, logarithmic negativity, non-classicality depth, steering parameter and the Bell parameter are analyzed side-by-side to shed light to the correlations between the Stokes and anti-Stokes fields. Conditions for having the Stokes and anti-Stokes fields composed of only photon pairs, similarly as it occurs in twin beams in parametric down-conversion, are revealed. Numerous non-classicality criteria based on the probabilities of experimental photocount or theoretical photon-number distributions are derived using several approaches. Relations among the derived criteria are revealed and the fundamental criteria are identified. They are grouped into parametric systems that allow the analysis of the non-classicality from different points of view ('local' non-classicality, pairwise character of photon correlations, etc.). Considering their structure, the criteria may be divided into groups that differ in the power to resolve the non-classicality. Quantification of the non-classicality using the Lee non-classicality depth and the non-classicality counting parameter is discussed. The used number of field's modes is identified as an important parameter that may cause unexpected results. An appropriate linear transformation of a photocount (photon-number) distribution into its s-ordered form, needed for the determination of the non-classicality depth, is derived. For comparison, the derived criteria are applied both to an experimental photocount histogram of a twin beam and the reconstructed photon-number distributions with different levels of the noise.

Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects are studied in an asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler composed of a probe waveguide and a system waveguide. The system is a nonlinear waveguide operating under non-degenerate hyper-Raman process, while both the pump modes in the system are constantly interacting with the probe waveguide. The effect of the presence of probe on the temporal evolution of the system in terms of the number of photons in Stokes and anti-Stokes modes as well as phonon number is quantified as Zeno parameter. The negative (positive) values of the Zeno parameter in the specific mode are considered as the signatures of the quantum Zeno (anti-Zeno)effect in that mode of the system. It is observed that the phase mismatch in Stokes and anti-Stokes generation processes can be controlled to induce a transition between quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects for both off-resonant and resonant hyper-Raman process. However, in case of off-resonant hyper-Raman process in the system waveguide, the frequency detuning parameters can also be used analogously to cause the desired crossover. Further, the general nature of the physical system and the perturbative technique used here allowed us to analytically study the possibilities of observing quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in a large number of special cases, including situations where the process is spontaneous, partially spontaneous and/or the system is operated under degenerate hyper-Raman process, or a simple Raman process.

A two-mode optical parity-time (PT) symmetric system, with gain and dam**, described by a quantum quadratic Hamiltonian with additional small Kerr-like nonlinear terms, is analyzed from the point of view of nonclassical-light generation. Two kinds of stationary states with different types of (in)stability are revealed. Properties of one of these are related to the presence of semiclassical exceptional points, i.e., exotic degeneracies of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing the studied system without quantum jumps. The evolution of the logarithmic negativity, principal squeezing variances, and sub-shot-noise photon-number correlations, considered as entanglement and non-classicality quantifiers, is analyzed in the approximation of linear-operator corrections to the classical solution. Suitable conditions for nonclassical-light generation are identified in the oscillatory regime, especially at and around exceptional points that considerably enhance the nonlinear interaction and, thus, the non-classicality of the generated light. The role of quantum fluctuations, inevitably accompanying attenuation and amplification in the evolution of quantum states, is elucidated. The evolution of the system is analyzed for different initial conditions.

In the former case, the solution is applicable to both resonant and off-resonant Raman processes, while strong classical pump is assumed at resonance. Under weak pump conditions (i.e., in a complete quantum treatment), the phase difference of phases described by single nonclassical modes is required to be filtered to describe a regular distribution function, which is not the case with strong pump. Compound Stokes-phonon mode shows nonclassical features of phases in both weak and strong pum**, which effect is similar to that for compound pump-phonon (Stokes-anti-Stokes) mode with weak (strong) pump. While anti-Stokes-phonon mode is observed to be classical and coherence conserving in strong pump case, pump-Stokes mode shows similar behavior in a special case in quantum treatment.

In this contribution we analyze virtual-state spectroscopy --- a unique tool for extracting information about the virtual states that contribute to the two-photon excitation of an absorbing medium --- as implemented by means of intense entangled beams with tunable spectral correlations. We provide a thorough description of all contributing terms (classical and quantum) in the two-photon absorption signal, as well as the limits imposed by the power of the pump that produces the entangled beams on the observability of the spectral lines of the virtual transitions. We find that virtual-state spectroscopy may be implemented with entangled twin beams carrying up to $10^4$ photon pairs. This implies that, in principle, one might be able to detect two-photon absorption signals up to four orders of magnitude larger than previously reported, thus paving the way towards the first experimental realization of the virtual-state spectroscopy technique.

Their performance in revealing the non-classicality is judged in comparison with the exact results provided by suitable entanglement and local non-classicality quantifiers. Whereas the non-classicality of noisy twin beams is always revealed by these criteria, not all the nonclassical states obtained at the output of the beam splitter can be identified by these experimentally easily reachable criteria.

A method for extracting these correlations from the experimental joint photocount distributions is suggested using a suitable statistical model that quantifies the contribution of spatial correlations to the joint photocount distributions. In detail, the profile of twin-beam intensity spatial cross-correlation function is revealed from the curve that gives the genuine mean photon-pair number (both photons from a pair are detected) as a function of the extent of the detection area. Also, the principle of reducing the noise in photon-number-resolving detection by using spatial correlations is experimentally demonstrated.

A perturbative analytic operator solution of a completely quantum mechanical Hamiltonian of multi-photon pump non-degenerate hyper-Raman process is obtained. It is shown that the obtained solution is general in nature as the solutions of non-degenerate hyper-Raman and stimulated Raman processes can be obtained as special cases of the present solution. The analytic solutions obtained here are used to investigate the nonclassical properties of the different modes in the stimulated, spontaneous and partially spontaneous multi-photon pump non-degenerate hyper-Raman processes. The nonclassical nature of these processes is witnessed by means of single mode and intermodal quadrature squeezing, intermodal entanglement of different orders, lower order and higher order photon antibunching. Interestingly, manifesting the multiphoton nature of the pump modes, a bunch of nonclassicality involving them are observed due to self-interaction of various pump modes.

Numerous inequalities involving moments of integrated intensities and revealing nonclassicality and entanglement in bipartite optical fields are derived using the majorization theory, non-negative polynomials, the matrix approach, as well as the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. Different approaches for deriving these inequalities are compared. Using the experimental photocount histogram generated by a weak noisy twin beam monitored by a photon-number-resolving iCCD camera the performance of the derived inequalities is compared. A basic set of ten inequalities suitable for monitoring the entanglement of a twin beam is suggested. Inequalities involving moments of photocounts (photon numbers) as well as those containing directly the elements of photocount (photon-number) distributions are also discussed as a tool for revealing nonclassicality.

Relations among the moment criteria are revealed. Performance of the criteria is experimentally investigated using a set of potentially sub-Poissonian fields obtained by post-selection from a twin beam. The criteria based on moments of integrated intensity and photon number and those using the elements of photocount distribution are found as the most powerful. Suitable conditions for the generation of highly entangled states are found. Transfer of the entanglement from the down-converted modes into the up-converted ones is also suggested. The analysis of the whole set of states reveals that sub-shot-noise intensity correlations between the equally-populated down-converted modes, as well as the equally-populated up-converted modes, uniquely identify entangled states. The behavior of general nonclassical two-mode Gaussian states at a beam splitter is investigated. Single-mode nonclassicality as well as two-mode entanglement of both input and output states are analyzed suggesting their suitable quantifiers. These quantifiers are derived from local and global invariants of linear unitary two-mode transformations such that the sum of input (or output) local nonclassicality measures and entanglement measure gives a global invariant. This invariant quantifies the global nonclassicality resource. Mutual transformations of local nonclassicalities and entanglement induced by the beam splitter are analyzed considering incident noisy twin beams, single-mode noisy squeezed vacuum states, and states encompassing both squeezed states and twin beams. Using the model of parametric interaction based on the spatio-spectral Schmidt modes and generalized parametric approximation, we analyze coherence and mode structure of ultra-intense twin beams generated in the regime with pump depletion. We show that the increase of spatial and spectral coherence with the increasing pump power observed for moderate powers is replaced by the decrease for the pump powers at which pump depletion occurs. This behavior of coherence is opposed to that exhibited by the number of spatio-spectral modes effectively constituting the twin beam. The conditions for maximal coherence are analyzed considering pump-beam parameters (spectral width, transverse radius). The existence of additional coherence maxima occurring at even higher pump powers is predicted and explained by the oscillatory evolution of the modes' populations.

Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects are studied in a symmetric nonlinear optical coupler, which is composed of two nonlinear ($χ^{\left(2\right)}$) waveguides that are interacting with each other via the evanescent waves. Both the waveguides operate under second harmonic generation. However, to study quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects one of them is considered as the system and the other one is considered as the probe. Considering all the fields involved as weak, a completely quantum mechanical description is provided, and the analytic solutions of Heisenberg's equations of motion for all the field modes are obtained using a perturbative technique. Photon number statistics of the second harmonic mode of the system is shown to depend on the presence of the probe, and this dependence is considered as quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects. Further, it is established that as a special case of the momentum operator for $χ^{\left(2\right)}-χ^{\left(2\right)}$ symmetric coupler we can obtain momentum operator of $χ^{\left(2\right)}-χ^{\left(1\right)}$ asymmetric coupler with linear ($χ^{\left(1\right)}$) waveguide as the probe, and in such a particular case, the expressions obtained for Zeno and anti-Zeno effects with nonlinear probe (which we referred to as nonlinear quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects) may be reduced to the corresponding expressions with linear probe (which we referred to as the linear quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects). Linear and nonlinear quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects are rigorously investigated, and it is established that in the stimulated case, we may switch between quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects just by controlling the phase of the second harmonic mode of the system or probe.

Coherence and correlations represent two related properties of a compound system. The system can be, for instance, the polarization of a photon, which forms part of a polarization-entangled two-photon state, or the spatial shape of a coherent beam, where each spatial mode bears different polarizations. Whereas a local unitary transformation of the system does not affect its coherence, global unitary transformations modifying both the system and its surroundings can enhance its coherence, transforming mutual correlations into coherence. The question naturally arises of what is the best measure that quantifies the correlations that can be turned into coherence, and how much coherence can be extracted. We answer both questions, and illustrate its application for some typical simple systems, with the aim at illuminating the general concept of enhancing coherence by modifying correlations.

Intensity auto- and cross-correlation functions are determined and compared in the spectral and temporal domains as well as the transverse wave-vector and crystal output planes. Whereas the spectral, temporal and transverse wave-vector coherence increases with the increasing pump intensity, coherence in the crystal output plane is practically independent on the pump intensity owing to the mode structure in this plane. The corresponding auto- and cross-correlation functions approach each other for larger pump intensities. Entanglement dimensionality of a twin beam is determined comparing several approaches.

A bosonic state is commonly considered nonclassical (or quantum) if its Glauber-Sudarshan $P$ function is not a classical probability density, which implies that only coherent states and their statistical mixtures are classical. We quantify the nonclassicality of a single qubit, defined by the vacuum and single-photon states, by applying the following four well-known measures of nonclassicality: (1) the nonclassical depth, $τ$, related to the minimal amount of Gaussian noise which changes a nonpositive $P$ function into a positive one; (2) the nonclassical distance $D$, defined as the Bures distance of a given state to the closest classical state, which is the vacuum for the single-qubit Hilbert space; together with (3) the negativity potential (NP) and (4) concurrence potential, which are the nonclassicality measures corresponding to the entanglement measures (i.e., the negativity and concurrence, respectively) for the state generated by mixing a single-qubit state with the vacuum on a balanced beam splitter. We show that complete statistical mixtures of the vacuum and single-photon states are the most nonclassical single-qubit states regarding the distance $D$ for a fixed value of both the depth $τ$ and NP in the whole range $[0,1]$ of their values, as well as the NP for a given value of $τ$ such that $τ>0.3154$. Conversely, pure states are the most nonclassical single-qubit states with respect to $τ$ for a given $D$, NP versus $D$, and $τ$ versus NP. We also show the "relativity" of these nonclassicality measures by comparing pairs of single-qubit states: if a state is less nonclassical than another state according to some measure then it might be more nonclassical according to another measure. Moreover, we find that the concurrence potential is equal to the nonclassical distance for single-qubit states.

Nonclassicality, entanglement, as well as dimensionality of a noisy twin beam are determined using characteristic function of the beam written in the Fock basis. One-to-one correspondence between the negativity quantifying entanglement and the nonclassicality depth is revealed. Twin beams, which are either entangled or nonclassical (independent of their entanglement), are observed only for the limited degrees of noise that degrades their quantumness. Dimensionality of the twin beam quantified by the participation ratio is compared with the dimensionality of entanglement determined from the negativity. The partition of the degrees of freedom of the twin beam into those related to entanglement and to noise is suggested. Both single-mode and multimode twin beams are analyzed. We present an error analysis of various tomographic protocols based on the linear inversion for the reconstruction of an unknown two-qubit state. We solve the problem of finding a tomographic protocol which is the most robust against errors in terms of the lowest value (i.e., equal to 1) of a condition number, as required by the Gastinel-Kahan theorem. In contrast, standard tomographic protocols, including those based on mutually unbiased bases, are nonoptimal for determining all 16 elements of an unknown two-qubit density matrix. Our method is based on the measurements of the 16 generalized Pauli operators, where twelve of them can be locally measured, and the other four require nonlocal Bell measurements. Our method corresponds to selectively measuring, one by one, all of the real and imaginary elements of an unknown two-qubit density matrix. We describe two experimentally feasible setups of this protocol for the optimal reconstruction of two photons in an unknown polarization state using conventional detectors and linear-optical elements. Moreover, we define the operators for the optimal reconstruction of the states of multiqubit or multilevel (qudit) systems.

In contrast to the earlier results, all the initial fields are considered weak and a completely quantum mechanical model is used here to describe the system. Perturbative solutions of Heisenberg's equations of motion for various field modes are obtained using Sen-Mandal technique. Obtained solutions are subsequently used to show the existence of single-mode and intermodal squeezing, single-mode and intermodal antibunching, two-mode and multi-mode entanglement in the output of contradirectional asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler. Further, existence of higher order nonclassicality is also established by showing the existence of higher order antibunching, higher order squeezing and higher order entanglement. Variation of observed nonclassical characters with different coupling constants and phase mismatch is discussed.

Abstract:
We present a method for the generation of correlated photon pairs in desired orbital-angular-momentum states using a non-linear silica ring fiber and spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Photon-pair emission under quasi-phase-matching conditions with quantum conversion efficiency $ 6\times 10^{-11} $ is found in a 1-m long fiber with a thermally induced $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity in a ring-shaped c…

Abstract:
It is shown that spatial correlation functions measured for correlated photon pairs at the single-photon level correspond to speckle patterns visible at high intensities. This correspondence is observed for the first time in one experimental setup by using different acquisition modes of an intensified CCD camera in low and high intensity regimes. The behavior of intensity auto- and cross-correlati…

It is shown that spatial correlation functions measured for correlated photon pairs at the single-photon level correspond to speckle patterns visible at high intensities. This correspondence is observed for the first time in one experimental setup by using different acquisition modes of an intensified CCD camera in low and high intensity regimes. The behavior of intensity auto- and cross-correlation functions in dependence on pump-beam parameters including power and transverse profile is investigated.
