We discuss anyon condensation in mixed-state topological order. The phases were recently conjectured to be classified by pre-modular fusion categories. Just like anyon condensation in pure-state topological order, a bootstrap analysis shows condensable anyons are given by connected étale algebras. We explain how to perform generic anyon condensation including non-invertible anyons and successive condensations. Interestingly, some condensations lead to pure-state topological orders. We clarify when this happens. We also compute topological invariants of equivalence classes.

A recent study shows that an emergent evolution dimension, in addition to time, can be induced if the quantum system depends on a continuous parameter. The evolution in the emergent evolution dimension is described by a parallel transport, the closest fiber bundle analog to a geodesic in (pseudo-)Riemannian geometry. Nevertheless, the evolution in the emergent dimension often exhibits some singular behaviors at critical points. In this work, we demonstrate that these singularities can be indications of quantum phase transitions. We then show that these singularities, like those at the black hole event horizon, can be removed locally.

The biphotons, generated from a hot atomic vapor via the process of spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM), have the following merits: stable and tunable frequencies as well as linewidth. Such merits are very useful in the applications of long-distance quantum communication. However, the hot-atom SFWM biphoton sources previously had far lower values of generation rate per linewidth, i.e., spectral brightness, as compared with the sources of biphotons generated by the spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) process. Here, we report a hot-atom SFWM source of biphotons with a linewidth of 960 kHz and a generation rate of 3.7$\times$ $10^5$ pairs/s. The high generation rate, together with the narrow linewidth, results in a spectral brightness of 3.8$\times$ $10^5$ pairs/s/MHz, which is 17 times of the previous best result with atomic vapors and also better than all known results with all kinds of media. The all-copropagating scheme together with a large optical depth (OD) of the atomic vapor is the key improvement, enabling the achieved spectral brightness to be about one quarter of the ultimate limit. Furthermore, this biphoton source had a signal-to-background ratio (SBR) of 2.7, which violated the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality for classical light by about 3.6 folds. Although an increasing spectral brightness usually leads to a decreasing SBR, our systematic study indicates that both of the present spectral brightness and SBR can be enhanced by further increasing the OD. This work demonstrates a significant advancement and provides useful knowledge in the quantum technology using photons.

We utilized the all-copropagating scheme, which maintains the phase-match condition, in the spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) process to generate biphotons from a hot atomic vapor. The scheme enables our biphotons not only to surpass those in the previous works of hot-atom SFWM, but also to compete with the biphotons that are generated by either the cold-atom SFWM or the cavity-assisted spontaneous parametric down conversion. The biphoton linewidth in this work is tunable for an order of magnitude. As we tuned the linewidth to 610 kHz, the maximum two-photon correlation function, $g_{s,as}^{(2)}$, of the biphotons is 42. This $g_{s,as}^{(2)}$ violates the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality for classical light by 440 folds, and demonstrates that the biphotons have a high purity. The generation rate per linewidth of the 610-kHz biphoton source is 1,500 pairs/(s$\cdot$MHz), which is the best result of all the sub-MHz biphoton sources in the literature. By increasing the pump power by 16 folds, we further enhanced the generation rate per linewidth to 2.3$\times$10$^4$ pairs/(s$\cdot$MHz), while the maximum $g_{s,as}^{(2)}$ became 6.7. In addition, we are able to tune the linewidth down to 290$\pm$20 kHz. This is the narrowest linewidth to date, among all the various kinds of single-mode biphotons.

With the growing complexity of quantum key distribution (QKD) network structures, aforehand topology design is of great significance to support a large-number of nodes over a large-spatial area. However, the exclusivity of quantum channels, the limitation of key generation capabilities, the variety of QKD protocols and the necessity of untrusted-relay selection, make the optimal topology design a very complicated task. In this research, a hybrid QKD network is studied for the first time from the perspective of topology, by analyzing the topological differences of various QKD protocols. In addition, to make full use of hybrid networking, an analytical model for optimal topology calculation is proposed, to reach the goal of best secure communication service by optimizing the deployment of various QKD devices and the selection of untrusted-relays under a given cost limit. Plentiful simulation results show that hybrid networking and untrusted-relay selection can bring great performance advantages, and then the universality and effectiveness of the proposed analytical model are verified.

Certain quantum states are well-known to be particularly fragile in the presence of decoherence, as illustrated by Schrodinger's famous gedanken cat experiment. It has been better appreciated more recently that quantum states can be characterized in a hierarchy of quantum quantities such entanglement, quantum correlations, and quantum coherence. It has been conjectured that each of these quantities have various degrees of fragility in the presence of decoherence. Here we experimentally confirm this conjecture by preparing tripartite photonic states and subjecting them to controlled amounts of dephasing. When the dephasing is applied to all the qubits, we find that the entanglement is the most fragile quantity, followed by the quantum coherence, then mutual information. This is in agreement with the widely held expectation that multipartite quantum correlations are a highly fragile manifestation of quantumness. We also perform dephasing on one out of the three qubits on star and $ W \bar{W} $ states. Here the distribution of the correlations and coherence in the state becomes more important in relation to the dephasing location.

The phase precision is about $1.4/N$ for large photon number $N$, which approaches the Heisenberg limit of 1/N. Experimentally, we employ a four-photon state from type-II parametric down-conversion and achieve a phase uncertainty of $0.291\pm 0.001$ beating the standard quantum limit of $1/\sqrt{N} = 1/2$ for four photons.

In this paper, photonic entanglement and interference are described and analyzed with the language of quantum information process. Correspondingly, a photon state involving several degrees of freedom is represented in a new expression based on the permutation symmetry of bosons. In this expression, each degree of freedom of a single photon is regarded as a qubit and operations on photons as qubit gates. The two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference is well interpreted with it. Moreover, the analysis reveals the entanglement between different degrees of freedom in a four-photon state from parametric down conversion, even if there is no entanglement between them in the two-photon state. The entanglement will decrease the state purity and photon interference visibility in the experiments on a four-photon polarization state.

Multi-photon interference is at the heart of the recently proposed linear optical quantum computing scheme and plays an essential role in many protocols in quantum information. Indistinguishability is what leads to the effect of quantum interference. Optical interferometers such as Michaelson interferometer provide a measure for second-order coherence at one-photon level and Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer was widely employed to describe two-photon entanglement and indistinguishability. However, there is not an effective way for a system of more than two photons. Recently, a new interferometric scheme was proposed to quantify the degree of multi-photon distinguishability. Here we report an experiment to implement the scheme for three-photon case. We are able to generate three photons with different degrees of temporal distinguishability and demonstrate how to characterize them by the visibility of three-photon interference. This method of quantitative description of multi-photon indistinguishability will have practical implications in the implementation of quantum information protocols.

Decoupling such a set of equations yields an extension to the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation for the Schrödinger equation with the position-dependent effective mass (PDEM). In the classically allowed region, the decoupling is to ignore the reflection resulting from the variations of both the potential and effective mass. By considering an infinite-well example with the PDEM, it is shown that the extended WKB approximation can provide not only an estimation to eigenenergies, but also an analytic form to approximate wavefunctions.
