Quantumkey distribution (QKD) promises unconditional security for communication. However, the random choices of the measurement basis in QKD usually result in low key creation efficiency. This drawback is overcome in the differential-phase-shift QKD, provided that each photon can be prepared in a large number of time bins with a proper waveform. In this work we develop a miniature 1550-nm single-photon source to generate narrowband single photon in 50 time bins with a nearly optimal waveform for achieving unity key creation efficiency. By utilizing these single photons in the field test, we demonstrate the differential-phase-shift QKD with a key creation efficiency of 97%. Our work shows that the practical QKD can benefit from the narrowband single photons with controllable waveforms.

Polarization-entangled photons are indispensable to numerous quantum technologies and fundamental studies. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel source that generates collinear polarization-entangled photons by simultaneously achieving two distinct types of phase-matching conditions (noncritically birefringent and quasi phase matching) in a periodically poled nonlinear crystal with a large poling period of 2 mm. The photon pairs are generated in a polarization-entangled state with a fidelity and concurrence of 0.998 and 0.935, respectively, and violate the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality by 84 standard deviations. The compact source does not require interferometer, delicate domain structures, or post selection, and is advantageous for scalable quantum computing and communication, where many replicas or chip-scale devices are needed.

The pairing ratio, a crucial metric assessing a biphoton source's ability to generate correlated photon pairs, remains underexplored despite theoretical predictions. This study presents experimental findings on the pairing ratio, utilizing a double-$Λ$ spontaneous four-wave mixing biphoton source in cold atoms. At an optical depth (OD) of 20, we achieved an ultrahigh biphoton generation rate of up to $1.3\times10^7$ per second, with a successful pairing ratio of $61\%$. Increasing the OD to 120 significantly improved the pairing ratio to $89\%$, while maintaining a consistent biphoton generation rate. This achievement, marked by high generation rates and robust biphoton pairing, holds great promise for advancing efficiency in quantum communication and information processing. Additionally, in a scenario with a lower biphoton generation rate of $5.0 \times 10^4$ per second, we attained an impressive signal-to-background ratio of 241 for the biphoton wavepacket, surpassing the Cauchy-Schwarz criterion by approximately $1.5\times10^4$ times.

Device-independent quantum key distribution (DIQKD) is a key distribution scheme whose security is based on the laws of quantum physics but does not require any assumptions about the devices used in the protocol. The security of the existing entanglement-based DIQKD protocol relies on the Bell test. Here, we propose an efficient device-independent quantum key distribution (EDIQKD) protocol in which one participant prepares states and transmits them to another participant through a quantum channel to measure. In this prepare-and-measure protocol, the transmission process between participants is characterized according to the process tomography for security, ruling out any mimicry using the classical initial, transmission, and final state. Comparing the minimal number of bits of the raw key to guarantee security against collective attacks, the efficiency of the EDIQKD protocol is two orders of magnitude more than that of the DIQKD protocol for the reliable key of which quantum bit error rate is allowed up to 6.5\%. This advantage will enable participants to substantially conserve the entangled pair's demanded resources and the measurement. According to the highest detection efficiency in the recent most advanced photonic experiment, our protocol can be realized with a non-zero key rate and remains more efficient than usual DIQKD. Our protocol and its security analysis may offer helpful insight into identifying the typical prepare-and-measure quantum information tasks with the device-independent scenario.

Quantum networks comprised of entangled end nodes serve stronger than the classical correlation for unparalleled quantum internet applications. However, practical quantum networking is affected by noise, which at its worst, causes end nodes to be described by pre-existing classical data. In such untrusted networks, determining quantum network fidelity and genuine multi-node entanglement becomes crucial. Here, we show that determining quantum network fidelity and genuine $N$-node entanglement in an untrusted star network requires only $N+1$ measurement settings. This method establishes a semi-trusted framework, allowing some nodes to relax their assumptions. Our network determination method is enabled by detecting genuine $N$-node Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steerability. Experimentally, using spontaneous parametric down-conversion entanglement sources, we demonstrate the determinations of genuine 3-photon and 4-photon quantum networks and the false positives of the widely used entanglement witness, the fidelity criterion of $1/2$. Our results provide a scalable method for the determination of multipartite entanglement in realistic quantum networks.

We report the generation of biphotons, with a temporal full width at the half maximum (FWHM) of 13.4$\pm$0.3 $μ$s and a spectral FWHM of 50$\pm$1 kHz, via the process of spontaneous four-wave mixing. The temporal width is the longest, and the spectral linewidth is the narrowest up to date. This is also the first biphoton result that obtains a linewidth below 100 kHz, reaching a new milestone. The very long biphoton wave packet has a signal-to-background ratio of 3.4, which violates the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality for classical light by 4.8 folds. Furthermore, we demonstrated a highly-tunable-linewidth biphoton source and showed that while the biphoton source's temporal and spectral width were controllably varied by about 24 folds, its generation rate only changed by less than 15\%. A spectral brightness or generation rate per pump power per linewidth of 1.2$\times$10$^6$ pairs/(s$\cdot$mW$\cdot$MHz) was achieved at the temporal width of 13.4 $μ$s. The above results were made possible by the low decoherence rate and high optical depth of the experimental system, as well as the nearly phase-mismatch-free scheme employed in the experiment. This work has demonstrated a high-efficiency ultranarrow-linewidth biphoton source, and has made a substantial advancement in the quantum technology utilizing heralded single photons.

The biphotons, generated from a hot atomic vapor via the process of spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM), have the following merits: stable and tunable frequencies as well as linewidth. Such merits are very useful in the applications of long-distance quantum communication. However, the hot-atom SFWM biphoton sources previously had far lower values of generation rate per linewidth, i.e., spectral brightness, as compared with the sources of biphotons generated by the spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) process. Here, we report a hot-atom SFWM source of biphotons with a linewidth of 960 kHz and a generation rate of 3.7$\times$ $10^5$ pairs/s. The high generation rate, together with the narrow linewidth, results in a spectral brightness of 3.8$\times$ $10^5$ pairs/s/MHz, which is 17 times of the previous best result with atomic vapors and also better than all known results with all kinds of media. The all-copropagating scheme together with a large optical depth (OD) of the atomic vapor is the key improvement, enabling the achieved spectral brightness to be about one quarter of the ultimate limit. Furthermore, this biphoton source had a signal-to-background ratio (SBR) of 2.7, which violated the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality for classical light by about 3.6 folds. Although an increasing spectral brightness usually leads to a decreasing SBR, our systematic study indicates that both of the present spectral brightness and SBR can be enhanced by further increasing the OD. This work demonstrates a significant advancement and provides useful knowledge in the quantum technology using photons.

The Leggett-Garg inequality (LGI) distinguishes nonmacrorealistic channels from macrorealistic ones by constraining the experimental outcomes of the underlying system. In this work, we propose a class of channels which, initially, cannot violate the LGI (in the form of the temporal Bell inequality) but can violate it after the application of stochastic pre- and post- operations (SPPOs). As a proof-of-principle experiment, we demonstrate the stochastic pre- and post- operations in an amplitude-dam** channel with photonic qubits. We denote the above phenomenon as hidden nonmacrorealistic channels. We also discuss the relationship between this hidden nonmacrorealistic channels (in terms of the temporal Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality) and the strongly nonlocality-breaking channel, which breaks the hidden spatial CHSH nonlocality for arbitrary states. In general, if the channel satisfies hidden nonmacrorealism, it is not a strongly CHSH nonlocality-breaking channel.

Here, we demonstrate that coherent-state microwave photons, with an optimal temporal waveform, can be efficiently loaded onto a single superconducting artificial atom in a semi-infinite one-dimensional (1D) transmission-line waveguide. Using a weak coherent state (average photon number N<<1 with an exponentially rising waveform, whose time constant matches the decoherence time of the artificial atom, we demonstrate a loading efficiency of above 94% from 1D semi-free space to the artificial atom. We also show that Fock-state microwave photons can be deterministically loaded with an efficiency of 98.5%. We further manipulate the phase of the coherent state exciting the atom, enabling coherent control of the loading process. We utilized the all-copropagating scheme, which maintains the phase-match condition, in the spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) process to generate biphotons from a hot atomic vapor. The scheme enables our biphotons not only to surpass those in the previous works of hot-atom SFWM, but also to compete with the biphotons that are generated by either the cold-atom SFWM or the cavity-assisted spontaneous parametric down conversion. The biphoton linewidth in this work is tunable for an order of magnitude. As we tuned the linewidth to 610 kHz, the maximum two-photon correlation function, $g_{s,as}^{(2)}$, of the biphotons is 42. This $g_{s,as}^{(2)}$ violates the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality for classical light by 440 folds, and demonstrates that the biphotons have a high purity. The generation rate per linewidth of the 610-kHz biphoton source is 1,500 pairs/(s$\cdot$MHz), which is the best result of all the sub-MHz biphoton sources in the literature. By increasing the pump power by 16 folds, we further enhanced the generation rate per linewidth to 2.3$\times$10$^4$ pairs/(s$\cdot$MHz), while the maximum $g_{s,as}^{(2)}$ became 6.7. In addition, we are able to tune the linewidth down to 290$\pm$20 kHz. This is the narrowest linewidth to date, among all the various kinds of single-mode biphotons.

Here we demonstrate the time-resolved detection of photon-surface-plasmon coupling by exploiting single and entangled photons with long coherence time to excite single optical plasmons. However, generation of these photons usually requires atomic ensembles with high optical depth or spontaneous parametric down-conversion with sophisticated optical cavity. By manipulating the two-component biphoton wavefunction generated from a low-optical-depth (low-OD) atomic ensemble, we demonstrate biphotons with subnatural linewidth in the sub-MHz regime. The potential of sha** and manipulating the quantum wavepackets of these temporally long photons is also demonstrated and discussed. Here we demonstrate another fascinating use of wavepacket manipulation on restoring quantum interference. By modulating the photons' temporal wavepacket, we observe the revival of post-selected entanglement that would otherwise be degraded or lost due to poor quantum interference. Our study shows that the amount of the restored entanglement is only limited by the forms of modulation and can achieve full recovery if the modulation function is properly designed. However, it is not clear how the nonidealities and randomness in the QPM grating of a parametric down-converter may affect the quantum properties of the biphotons. This paper intends to provide insights into the interplay between PDC and nonideal or random QPM structures. Using a periodically poled nonlinear crystal with short periodicity, we conduct experimental and theoretical studies of PDC subject to nonideal duty cycle and random errors in domain lengths. We report the observation of biphotons emerging through noncritical birefringent-phase-matching, which is impossible to occur in PDC with an ideal QPM grating, and a biphoton spectrum determined by the details of nonidealities and randomness. We also observed QPM biphotons with a diminished strength. These features are both confirmed by our theory. Our work provides new perspectives for biphoton engineering with QPM.

Engineering and manipulating the temporal waveforms of these long biphotons provide efficient means for controlling light-matter quantum interaction at the single-photon level. We also review recent experiments using temporally long biphotons and single photons.

Abstract:
We calculate the properties of a biphoton source based on resonant backward-wave spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We show that the biphotons are generated in a single longitudinal mode having a subnatural linewidth and a Glauber correlation time exceeding 65 ns.

Abstract:
We describe a proof-of-principal experiment demonstrating the use of spread spectrum technology at the single photon level. We show how single photons with a prescribed temporal shape, in the presence of interfering noise, may be hidden and recovered.

The atomic qubit is composed of a single neutral atom in a far-detuned optical dipole trap and the phase decoherence may originate from the laser intensity and beam pointing fluctuations as well as magnetic field fluctuations. We show that suitable pulse sequences may prolongate the qubit coherence time substantially as comparing to the conventional spin echo pulse.

We report the experimental demonstration of a quantum memory for collective atomic states in a far-detuned optical dipole trap. Generation of the collective atomic state is heralded by the detection of a Raman scattered photon and accompanied by storage in the ensemble of atoms. The optical dipole trap provides confinement for the atoms during the quantum storage while retaining the atomic coherence. We probe the quantum storage by cross-correlation of the photon pair arising from the Raman scattering and the retrieval of the atomic state stored in the memory. Non-classical correlations are observed for storage times up to 60 microseconds.

Scalable quantum information processing critically depends on the capability of storage of a quantum state. In particular, a long-lived storable and retrievable quantum memory for single excitations is of crucial importance to the atomic-ensemble-based long-distance quantum communication. Although atomic memories for classical lights and continuous variables have been demonstrated with milliseconds storage time, there is no equal advance in the development of quantum memory for single excitations, where only around 10 $μ$s storage time was achieved. Here we report our experimental investigations on extending the storage time of quantum memory for single excitations. We isolate and identify distinct mechanisms for the decoherence of spin wave (SW) in atomic ensemble quantum memories. By exploiting the magnetic field insensitive state, ``clock state", and generating a long-wavelength SW to suppress the dephasing, we succeed in extending the storage time of the quantum memory to 1 ms. Our result represents a substantial progress towards long-distance quantum communication and enables a realistic avenue for large-scale quantum information processing.

The combination of quantum teleportation and quantum memory of photonic qubits is essential for future implementations of large-scale quantum communication and measurement-based quantum computation. Both steps have been achieved separately in many proof-of-principle experiments, but the demonstration of memory-built-in teleportation of photonic qubits remains an experimental challenge. Here, we demonstrate teleportation between photonic (flying) and atomic (stationary) qubits. In our experiment, an unknown polarization state of a single photon is teleported over 7 m onto a remote atomic qubit that also serves as a quantum memory. The teleported state can be stored and successfully read out for up to 8 micro-second. Besides being of fundamental interest, teleportation between photonic and atomic qubits with the direct inclusion of a readable quantum memory represents a step towards an efficient and scalable quantum network.

We report the direct observation of sub-Poissonian number fluctuation for a degenerate Bose gas confined in an optical trap. Reduction of number fluctuations below the Poissonian limit is observed for average numbers that range from 300 to 60 atoms.
