Quantitative characterization of two-qubit entanglement purification protocols is introduced. Our approach is based on the concurrence and the hit-and-run algorithm applied to the convex set of all two-qubit states. We demonstrate that pioneering protocols are unable to improve the estimated initial average concurrence of almost uniformly sampled density matrices, however, as it is known, they still generate pairs of qubits in a state that is close to a Bell state. We also develop a more efficient protocol and investigate it numerically together with a recent proposal based on an entangling rank-two projector. Furthermore, we present a class of variational purification protocols with continuous parameters and optimize their output concurrence. These optimized algorithms turn out to surpass former proposals and our new protocol by means of not wasting too many entangled states.

Entanglement between distant quantum systems is a critical resource for implementing quantum communication. This property is affected by external agents and can be restored by employing efficient entanglement purification protocols. In this work, we propose an entanglement purification protocol based on two entangling two-qubit operations that replace the usual controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate. These operations arise from a generalized quantum measurement and can be understood as measurement operators in a positive operator-valued measure (POVM). Furthermore, two variants of the core protocol are introduced and shown to be more practical in certain scenarios. The performance of the protocols is studied in terms of the overall success probability of reaching a Bell state and the number of purifiable states. Based on rank-two states, we can obtain analytical expressions for the success probability that we extend and refine using numerical calculations to the case of maximally entangled states (MEMS). We also consider more general rank-three states to show that our procedure is in general more convenient compared to purification protocols based on Bell diagonal states. Finally, we test the protocols using initial random states. In all cases, we find a larger performance and larger amount of purifiable states using our schemes compared to the CNOT-based purification protocol.

We investigate for optimal photon absorption a quantum electrodynamical model of an inhomogeneously-broadened spin ensemble coupled to a single-mode cavity. We consider a one-photon input pulse and obtain a simple one-parameter form for its optimal shape for absorption in the spin ensemble. Solutions to this problem are developed without using perturbation theory concerning the spin ensemble. Furthermore, we exploit the possibility of modulating the frequency and coupling rate of the resonator. We show some optimal scenarios and demonstrate the usefulness of our approach for the design of efficient quantum memories. In particular, we find the optimal cooperativity for different parameters and identify cases where absorption with a success probability larger than $99\%$ is achieved.

Quantitative characterization of different entanglement detection criteria for bipartite systems is presented. We review the implication sequence of these criteria and then numerically estimate volume ratios between criteria non-violating quantum states and all quantum states. The numerical approach is based on the hit-and-run algorithm, which is applied to the convex set of all quantum states embedded into a Euclidean vector space of the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product. We demonstrate that reduction, majorization, and the Rényi-entropy-based criteria are very ineffective compared to the positive partial transpose. In the case of the Rényi-entropy-based criterion, we show that the ratio of detectable entanglement increases with the order of the Rényi entropy.

The formalism of quantum estimation theory is applied to estimate the disorders in the positions of two membranes positioned in a driven cavity. We consider the coupled-cavities and the transmissive-regime models to obtain effective descriptions of this system for different reflectivity values of the membranes. Our models consist also high temperatures Brownian motions of the membranes, losses of the cavity fields, the input-output formalism and a balanced homodyne photodetection of the cavity output field. In this two-parameter estimation scenario we compare the classical and quantum Fisher information matrices and evaluate the accuracies of the estimations. We show that models prefer very different estimation strategies and the temperature does not have a detrimental effect on the estimation accuracies, but makes more difficult to attain the quantum optimal limit. Our analysis also reveals that best estimation strategies with unit effiecient detectors are measurements of the quadratures of the output field.

Euclidean volume ratios between quantum states with positive partial transpose and all quantum states in bipartite systems are investigated. These ratios allow a quantitative exploration of the typicality of entanglement and of its detectability by Bell inequalities. For this purpose a new numerical approach is developed. It is based on the Peres-Horodecki criterion, on a characterization of the convex set of quantum states by inequalities resulting from Newton identities and from Descartes' rule of signs, and on a numerical approach involving the multiphase Monte Carlo method and the hit-and-run algorithm. This approach confirms not only recent analytical and numerical results on two-qubit, qubit--qutrit, and qubit--four-level qudit states but also allows for a numerically reliable numerical treatment of so far unexplored qutrit--qutrit states. Based on this numerical approach with the help of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality and the Collins-Gisin inequality the degree of detectability of entanglement is investigated for two-qubit quantum states. It is investigated quantitatively to which extent a combined test of both Bell inequalities can increase the detectability of entanglement beyond what is achievable by each of these inequalities separately.

We investigate a case of the Hu-Paz-Zhang master equation of the Caldeira-Leggett model without Lindblad form obtained in the weak-coupling limit up to the second-order perturbation. In our study, we use Gaussian initial states to be able to employ a sufficient and necessary condition, which can expose positivity violations of the density operator during the time evolution. We demonstrate that the evolution of the non-Markovian master equation has problems when the stationary solution is not a positive operator, i.e., does not have physical interpretation. We also show that solutions always remain physical for small-times of evolution. Moreover, we identify a strong anomalous behavior, when the trace of the solution is diverging. We also provide results for the corresponding Markovian master equation and show that positivity violations occur for various types of initial conditions even when the stationary solution is a positive operator. Based on our numerical results, we conclude that this non-Markovian master equation is superior to the corresponding Markovian one.

The formalism of quantum estimation theory, focusing on the quantum and classical Fisher information, is applied to the estimation of the coupling strength in an optomechanical system. In order to estimate the optomechanical coupling, we have considered a cavity optomechanical model with non-Markovian Brownian motion of the mirror and employed input-output formalism to obtain the cavity output field. Our estimation scenario is based on balanced homodyne photodetection of the cavity output field. We have explored the difference between the associated measurement-dependent classical Fisher information and the quantum Fisher information, thus addressing the question of whether it is possible to reach the lower bound of the mean squared error of an unbiased estimator by means of balanced homodyne detection. We have found that the phase of the local oscillator in the homodyne detection is crucial; certain quadrature measurements allow very accurate estimation.

This paper is devoted to the study of the Bayesian-inference approach in the context of estimating the dipole coupling strength in matter-field interactions. In particular, we consider the simplest model of a two-level system interacting with a single mode of the radiation field. Our estimation strategy is based on the emerging state of the two-level system, whereas we determine both the minimum mean-square error and maximum likelihood estimators for uniform and Gaussian prior probability density functions. In the case of the maximum likelihood estimator, we develop a mathematical method which extends the already existing approaches to the variational problem of the average cost function. We demonstrate that long interaction times, large initial mean photon numbers, and nonzero detuning between two-level system transition and the frequency of the electromagnetic field mode have a deleterious effect on the optimality of the estimation scenario. We also present several cases where the estimation process is inconclusive, despite many ideal conditions being met.

The scheme involves an ensemble of identically prepared two-level atoms interacting pairwise with a single mode of the radiation field as described by the Tavis-Cummings model. By repeated measurements of the cavity field and of one atom within each pair a measurement-induced nonlinear quantum transformation of the relevant atomic states can be realized. The protocol is based on a rank two projector in the Bell basis which serves as a two-qubit operation replacing the usual controlled-NOT gate. We show that the whole space of two-qubit density matrices is mapped onto an invariant subspace characterized by seven real parameters. By analyzing this type of density matrices we are able to find general conditions for entanglement purification in the form of two inequalities between pairs of diagonal elements and pairs of coherences. We show that purifiable initial states do not necessary require a fidelity larger than one half with respect to any maximally entangled pure state. Furthermore, we find a family of states parametrized by their concurrence that can be perfectly converted into a Bell state in just one step of the protocol with probability proportional to the square of the concurrence.

We propose an entanglement purification scheme based on material qubits and ancillary coherent multiphoton states. We consider a typical QED scenario where material qubits implemented by two-level atoms fly sequentially through a cavity and interact resonantly with a single mode of the radiation field. We explore the theoretical possibilities of realizing a high-fidelity two-qubit quantum operation necessary for the purification protocol with the help of a postselective balanced homodyne photodetection. We demonstrate that the obtained probabilistic quantum operation can be used as a bilateral operation in the proposed purification scheme. It is shown that the probabilistic nature of this quantum operation is counterbalanced in the last step of the scheme where qubits are not discarded after inadequate qubit measurements. As this protocol requires present-day experimental setups and generates high-fidelity entangled pairs with high repetition rates, it may offer interesting perspectives for applications in quantum information theory.

The vulnerabilities arising in realistic implementations reduce the success probability, but leave the fidelity of the generated state unaltered. Our proposal thus allows for the generation of high-fidelity entangled matter qubits with high rate.

Dynamical decoupling is an important tool to counter decoherence and dissipation effects in quantum systems originating from environmental interactions. It has been used successfully in many experiments; however, there is still a gap between fidelity improvements achieved in practice compared to theoretical predictions. We propose a model for imperfect dynamical decoupling based on a stochastic Ito differential equation which could explain the observed gap. We discuss the impact of our model on the time evolution of various quantum systems in finite- and infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Analytical results are given for the limit of continuous control, whereas we present numerical simulations and upper bounds for the case of finite control.

Protocols for probabilistic entanglement-assisted quantum teleportation and for entanglement swap** of material qubits are presented. They are based on a protocol for postselective Bell-state projection which is capable of projecting two material qubits onto a Bell state with the help of ancillary coherent multiphoton states and postselection by balanced homodyne photodetection. Provided this photonic postselection is successful we explore the theoretical possibilities of realizing unit fidelity quantum teleportation and entanglement swap** with $25\%$ success probability. This photon-assisted Bell projection is generated by coupling almost resonantly the two material qubits to single modes of the radiation field in two separate cavities in a Ramsey-type interaction sequence and by measuring the emerged field states in a balanced homodyne detection scenario. As these quantum protocols require basic tools of quantum state engineering of coherent multiphoton states and balanced homodyne photodetection they may offer interesting perspectives in particular for current quantum optical applications in quantum information processing.

Quantum communication over long distances relies on the ability to create entanglement between two remote quantum nodes. Recent proposals aiming at experimental realization propose a hybrid quantum repeater setup where two distant material qubits are entangled by light-matter interaction. Motivated by these developments, we investigate possible decoherence effects originating from the centre- of-mass motion of the spatially well separated trapped qubits. Within the Lamb-Dicke regime we use photon exchange involving coherent states of the radiation field to entangle the two material qubits. Optimal generalized photonic field measurements are used to achieve entangled qubit pairs with high fidelities and high success probabilities. We demonstrate that the quality of the achievable two-qubit entanglement crucially depends on the trap frequencies involved. Furthermore, dynamical decoupling schemes are proposed which are capable of suppressing centre-of-mass-motion-induced decoherence effects significantly and which involve only local operations acting on the spatially well-separated material qubits.

We investigate the quantum electrodynamics of a single two-level atom located at the focus of a parabolic cavity. We first work out the modifications of the spontaneous emission induced by the presence of this boundary in the optical regime, where the dipole and the rotating-wave approximations apply. Furthermore, the single-photon state that leaves the cavity asymptotically is determined. The corresponding time-reversed single-photon quantum state is capable of exciting the atom in this extreme multimode scenario with near-unit probability. Using semiclassical methods, we derive a photon-path representation for the relevant transition amplitudes and show that it constitutes a satisfactory approximation for a wide range of wavelengths.

We explore possibilities of entangling two distant material qubits with the help of an optical radiation field in the regime of strong quantum electrodynamical coupling with almost resonant interaction. For this purpose the optimum generalized field measurements are determined which are capable of preparing a two-qubit Bell state by postselection with minimum error. It is demonstrated that in the strong-coupling regime some of the recently found limitations of the non-resonant weak-coupling regime can be circumvented successfully due to characteristic quantum electrodynamical quantum interference effects. In particular, in the absence of photon loss it is possible to postselect two-qubit Bell states with fidelities close to unity by a proper choice of the relevant interaction time. Even in the presence of photon loss this strong-coupling regime offers interesting perspectives for creating spatially well-separated Bell pairs with high fidelities, high success probabilities, and high repetition rates which are relevant for future realizations of quantum repeaters.

The Born-Markov master equation analysis of the vibrating mirror and photon experiment proposed by Marshall, Simon, Penrose and Bouwmeester is completed by including the important issues of temperature and friction. We find that at the level of cooling available to date, visibility revivals are purely classical, and no quantum effect can be detected by the setup, no matter how strong the photon-mirror coupling is. Checking proposals of universal nonenvironmental decoherence is ruled out by dominating thermal decoherence; a conjectured coordinate-diffusion contribution to decoherence may become observable on reaching moderately low temperatures.
