We numerically demonstrate a highly efficient optica huygens metagrating with unprecedentedly simple structure (only one meta-atom per period) designed via aggressively discretized method which initially originated from discretized metasurface design, performing nearly lossless anomalous refraction under TM-polarized incident light. A 2D full-wave floquet simulation shows that the proposed metagrating anomalously transmits and incident light of 800 nm wavelength with up to 94% power efficiency, where the specular 2transmission is substantially suppressed. our findings can also help demarcate the boundary between metagrating and metasurface.

Storage lifetime and capacity are two important factors to characterize the performance of a quantum memory. Here we report the stable trap** of above 200 ions in a cryogenic setup, and demonstrate the combination of the multi-qubit capacity and long storage lifetime by measuring the coherence time of randomly chosen ions to be on the order of hundreds of milliseconds. We apply composite microwave pulses to manipulate qubit states globally for efficient characterization of different storage units simultaneously, and we compare the performance of the quantum memory with and without the sympathetic cooling laser, thus unambiguously show the necessity of sympathetic cooling for the long-time storage of multiple ionic qubits.

This paper derives the generalized extreme value (GEV) model with implicit availability/perception (IAP) of alternatives and proposes a variational autoencoder (VAE) approach for choice set generation and implicit perception of alternatives. Specifically, the cross-nested logit (CNL) model with IAP is derived as an example of IAP-GEV models. The VAE approach is adapted to model the choice set generation process, in which the likelihood of perceiving chosen alternatives in the choice set is maximized. The VAE approach for route choice set generation is exemplified using a real dataset. IAP- CNL model estimated has the best performance in terms of goodness-of-fit and prediction performance, compared to multinomial logit models and conventional choice set generation methods.

Quantum critical behavior of many-body phase transitions is one of the most fascinating yet challenging questions in quantum physics. Here, we improved the band-map** method to investigate the quantum phase transition from superfluid to Mott insulators, and we observed the critical behaviors of quantum phase transitions in both dynamical steady-state-relaxation region and phase-oscillation region. Based on various observables, two different values for the same quantum critical parameter are observed. This result is beyond a universal-scaling-law description of quantum phase transitions known as the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, and suggests that multiple quantum critical mechanisms are competing in many-body quantum phase transition experiments in inhomogeneous systems.

The phenomenon of Many-Body Stark Localization of bosons in tilted optical lattice is studied. Despite the fact that no disorder is necessary for Stark localization to occur, it is very similar to well known many body localization (MBL) in sufficiently strong disorder. Not only the mean gap ratio reaches poissonian value as characteristic for localized situations but also the eigenstates reveal multifractal character as in standard MBL. Stark localization enables a coexistence of spacially separated thermal and localized phases in the harmonic trap similarly to fermions. Stark localization may also lead to spectacular trap** of particles in a reversed harmonic field which naively might be considered as an unstable configuration.

Several route choice models developed in the literature were based on a relatively small number of observations. With the extensive use of tracking devices in recent surveys, there is a possibility to obtain insights with respect to the traveler's choice behavior. In this paper, different path generation algorithms are evaluated using a large GPS trajectory dataset. The dataset contains 6,000 observations from Tel-Aviv metropolitan area. An initial analysis is performed by generating a single route based on the shortest path. Almost 60% percent of the 6,000 observations can be covered (assuming a threshold of 80% overlap) using a single path. This result significantly contrasts previous literature findings. Link penalty, link elimination, simulation and via-node methods are applied to generate route sets, and the consistency of the algorithms are compared. A modified link penalty method, which accounts for preference of using higher hierarchical roads, provides a route set with 97% coverage (80% overlap threshold). The via-node method produces route set with satisfying coverage, and generates routes that are more heterogeneous (in terms number of links and routes ratio).

Turbulence is an intriguing non-equilibrium state, which originates from fluid mechanics and has far-reaching consequences in the description of climate physics, the characterization of quantum hydrodynamics, and the understanding of cosmic evolution. The concept of turbulent cascade describing the energy redistribution across different length scales offers one profound route to reconcile fundamental conservative forces with observational energy non-conservation of accelerating expansion of the universe bypassing the cosmological constant. Here, we observe a dimension crossing turbulent energy cascade in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a two-dimensional (2d) optical lattice forming a 2d array of tubes, which exhibits universal behaviors in the dynamical energy-redistribution across different dimensions. By exciting atoms into the optical-lattice high bands, the excessive energy of this quantum many-body system is found to cascade from the transverse two-dimensional lattice directions to the continuous dimension, giving rise to a one-dimensional turbulent energy cascade, which is in general challenging to reach due to integrability. We expect this observed novel phenomenon of dimension-crossing energy cascade may inspire microscopic theories for modeling positive cosmological constant of our inflationary universe.

We report an actively tunable topological edge mode laser in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) laser chain, where the SSH chain is realized in an electrically-injected Fabry-Perot (FP) laser chain. A non-Hermitian SSH model is developed to investigate the SSH laser chain with tunable active topological defect. We theoretically demonstrate topological edge mode phase transition in the SSH laser chain. The phase transition manifested in the tight binding SSH laser chain is observed experimentally and agreed well with the theoretical predictions. Finally, by electronically tuning the gain and loss, a lossy topological mode is obtained, and lasing is experimentally observed in the lossy time-reversal configuration. This work presents a versatile platform to investigate novel concepts, such as topological mode, for main stream photonic applications.

Compressive Macroscopic Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (MFLI) is a novel technical implementation that enables monitoring multiple molecular interactions in macroscopic scale. Especially, we reported recently on the development of a hyperspectral wide-field time-resolved single-pixel imaging platform that facilitates whole-body in vivo lifetime imaging in less than 14 minutes. However, despite efficient data acquisition, the data processing of a Compressed Sensing (CS) based inversion plus lifetime fitting remain very time consuming. Herein, we propose to investigate the potential of deep learning for fast and accurate image formation. More precisely we developed a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) called Net-FLICS (Network for Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging with Compressive Sensing) that reconstructs both intensity and lifetime images directly from raw CS measurements. Results show that better quality reconstruction can be obtained using Net-FLICS, for both simulation and experimental dataset, with almost negligible time compared to the traditional analytic methods. This first investigation suggests that Net-FLICS may be a powerful tool to enable CS-based lifetime imaging for real-time applications.

This paper investigates the behavior of a heavy soft spring in steady circular motion. Since the spring is inhomogeneous due to centrifugal force, one can rigorously prove that it follows the one-dimensional static Willis-form equations. The theoretical predictions agree very well with experimental results. It further demonstrates that these equations can give a clear understanding of the stress-stiffening and spin-softening effect. These findings reveal that the Willis-form equations can give very accurate linear approximations of finite deformation problems and are also helpful to clarify the classical concept of the principle of material frame indifference.

The PT symmetric laser operates on coupled waveguide cavities with electrically tuned gain and loss. Such counterintuitive waveguide design enables PT symmetric breaking, causing unique mode selection and ultimately enabling single mode operation. By electrically tuning the loss in the loss region of the coupled waveguide cavity, several different PT-symmetric regimes are analyzed theoretically, and the corresponding PT symmetric phase transition is demonstrated experimentally in the coupled waveguide laser.

This paper proves that the linear elastic behavior of the material with inhomogeneous pre-stresses can be described by the Willis equations. In this case, the additional terms in the Willis equations, compared with the classical linear elastic equations for homogeneous media, are related to the gradient of pre-stresses. In this way, the material length scale is naturally incorporated in the framework of continuum mechanics. All these findings also coincide with the results of transformation elastodynamics, so that they can meet the requirement of the principle of material objectivity and the principle of general invariance.

In contrast to the traditional elastodynamic equations, a more comprehensive formulation of one dimensional (1D) elastodynamic equations is given for inhomogeneous media by using the coordinate transformation method. These modified equations consider the gradient of pre-stresses so that they are form-invariant and can retain time synchronization under spatial coordinate transformation, which comply with the principle of general invariance. A numerical example is conducted to compare the distributions of wave speeds calculated by the modified equations and the traditional equations. It demonstrates that the traditional equations are good approximations of the modified equations only when the wave frequency is sufficiently high.
