Abstract:
The scrape-off layer (SOL) power width (λ_q) is important for predicting the heat load on divertor targets for future magnetically confined devices. Currently, the underlying physics for λ_q scaling is not fully understood. This paper extends the previous inboard SOL particle flux width (λ_{js}) scaling [Liu et al 2019 Plasma Phys. Control. Control. Fusion 61 045001] to the outboard side in EAST, which can provide more experimental evidence for λ_q study. A systematic method has been developed to correct the less reliable upper outer (UO) divertor Langmuir probe (Div-LP) measurements with their more reliable neighboring measurements to reduce the measurement uncertainty of λ_js. For the discharges with the favorable Bt and upper single null configurations in the 2019 experiment campaign, about 260 discharges have been selected by certain criteria to ensure good λ_js measurements. Three H-mode, L-mode, and Ohmic databases have been constructed and are used for λ_js scalings. It is found that the outboard λ_js for the H-mode and L-mode plasmas scales as, λ_(js,UO)=1.52(W_{MHD}/n_e)^(-0.61) P_{tot}^0.19, where W_{MHD} is the stored energy, n_e is the line-averaged density, and P_{tot} is the total input power. This scaling is similar to the inboard λ_js scaling except for the scaling amplitude that is probably due the triangularity. The repeatable scaling dependence on W_{MHD}/n_e confirms the reliability of this dependence even though the regression quality is relatively poor. It is also discussed that the solely scaling of λ_q/λ_{js} on Bp is not enough to include all the physics of SOL heat transports.

Here we report the extraordinary electrochemical energy storage capability of NiMoO4@NiMoO4 homogeneous hierarchical nanosheet-on-nanowire-arrays (SOWAs) synthesized on nickel substrate by a two-stage hydrothermal process. Comparatively speaking, the SOWAs electrode displays improved electrochemical performances than the bare NiMoO4 nanowire arrays. Such improvements can be ascribed to the characteristic homogeneous hierarchical structure which not only effectively increases the active surface areas for fast charge transfer, but also reduces the electrode resistance significantly by eliminating the potential barrier at the nanowire/nanosheet junction, which is usually an issue in other reported heterogeneous architectures. We further evaluate the performances of the SOWAs by constructing an asymmetric hybrid supercapacitor (ASC) with the SOWAs and activated carbon (AC). The optimized ASC shows excellent electrochemical performances with 47.2 Wh/kg in energy density at 1.38 kW/kg at 0-1.2 V. Moreover, the specific capacity retention can be as high as 91.4% after 4000 cycles, illustrating the remarkable cycling stability of the NiMoO4@NiMoO4//AC ASC device. Our results show that this unique NiMoO4@NiMoO4 SOWAs display great prospect for future energy storage applications

We report the highest compression reached in laboratory plasmas using eight laser beams, E$_{laser}$$\approx$12 kJ, $τ_{laser}$=2 ns in third harmonic on a CD$_2$ target at the ShenGuang-II Upgrade (SGII-Up) facility in Shanghai, China. We estimate the deuterium density $ρ_D$= 2.0 $\pm$ 0.9 kg/cm$^{3}$, and the average kinetic energy of the plasma ions less than 1 keV. The highest reached areal density $Λρ_{D}$=4.8 $\pm$ 1.5 g/cm$^{2}$ was obtained from the measured ratio of the sequential ternary fusion reactions (dd$\rightarrow$t+p and t+d$\rightarrow$$α$+n) and the two body reaction fusions (dd$\rightarrow$$^3$He+n). At such high densities, sequential ternary and also quaternary nuclear reactions become important as well (i.e. n(14.1 MeV) + $^{12}$C $\rightarrow$ n'+$^{12}$C* etc.) resulting in a shift of the neutron (and proton) kinetic energies from their birth values. The Down Scatter Ratio (DSR-quaternary nuclear reactions) method, i.e. the ratio of the 10-12MeV neutrons divided by the total number of 14.1MeV neutrons produced, confirms the high densities reported above. The estimated lifetime of the highly compressed plasma is 52 $\pm$ 9 ps, much smaller than the lasers pulse duration.

CO2 laser-driven electron acceleration is demonstrated with particle-in-cell simulation in low-density plasma. An intense CO2 laser pulse with long wavelength excites wakefield. The bubble behind it has a broad space to sustain a large amount of electrons before reaching its charge saturation limit. A transversely propagating inject pulse is used to induce and control the ambient electron injection. The accelerated electron bunch with total charge up to 10 nC and the average charge per energy interval of more than 0.6 nC/MeV are obtained. Plasma-based electron acceleration driven by intense CO2 laser provides a new potential way to generate high-charge electron bunch with low energy spread, which has broad applications, especially for X-ray generation by table-top FEL and bremsstrahlung.
