The phenomenon of Heider (structural) balance is known for a long time (P. Bonacich and P. Lu, Introduction to Mathematical Sociology, Princeton UP, 2012). Yet it attracts attention of numerous computational scholars, as it is an example of a macroscopic ordering which emerges as a consequence of local interactions. In this paper, we investigate the thermal evolution (driven by thermal noise level $T$) of the work function $U(T)$ for Heider balance on several Archimedean lattices that contain separated triangles, pairs of triangles, chains of triangles and complex structures of triangles. To that end, the heat-bath algorithm is applied. Two schemes of link values updating are considered: synchronous and asynchronous. In the latter case, the analytical formula $U(T)=-\tanh(1/T)$ based on the partition function is provided. The Archimedean lattices are encoded with adjacency matrices, and Fortran procedures for their construction are provided. Finally, we present the mathematical proof that for any two-dimensional lattice, perfect structural (Heider) balance is unreachable at $T>0$.

Possibility of reaching a consensus in social systems with strong initial fragmentation is one of the most interesting issues in sociopysics. It is also intriguing what the dynamics of such processes is. To address those problems, we performed computer simulations using well-established models of social opinion formation, namely the voter, Sznajd, and Latané models. We investigated opinion dynamics in cases where the initial number of opinions is very large, equal to the number of actors (the voter and Latané models) or when every second actor has their own opinion (Sznajd model), with some variations on the update schemes, lattice topologies, effective ranges of interaction, and information noise levels. For all considered models, the number of opinions assumed by the actors is finally almost always reduced to only one. However, while the voter and Latané models exhibit a power-law time decrease in the number of opinions, the Sznajd model follows a complex three-stage behavior. We also demonstrated that the mean/median time of reaching the consensus scales with system size according to a power law for voter and Sznajd models, while for the Latané model this increase is even faster. Our results show that in the studied models the consensus is possible, provided that a long enough and model-dependent time to reach this state is available.

If the rank is determined only by the performance, the rank shift of incumbents due to the turnover is proportional to the initial rank: the status of high staff is reduced only slightly. This effect that has been observed in the literature. However, if the status also depends on some other variable, the positions of high staff may be greatly deteriorated. In that case, the effect depends nonlinearly on the time $τ$ between subsequent replacements of staff.

The dynamics of social relations and the possibility of reaching the state of structural balance (Heider balance) under the influence of the temperature modeling the social noise level are discussed for interacting actors occupying nodes of classical random graphs. Depending on the graph density $D$, either a smooth cross-over or a first-order phase transition from a balanced to an imbalanced state of the system is observed with an increase of the thermal noise level. The minimal graph density $D_\text{min}$ for which the first-order phase transition can be observed decreases with system size $N$ as $D_\text{min}\propto N^{-0.58(1)}$. For graph densities $D>D_\text{min}$ the reduced critical temperature $T_c^\star=T_c/T_c(D=1)$ increases with the graph density as $T_c^\star\propto D^{1.719(6)}$ independently of the system size $N$.

The dynamics of social relations and the possibility of reaching the state of structural balance (Heider balance) are discussed for various networks of interacting actors under the influence of the temperature modeling the social noise level. For that purpose, two main types of lattices are considered. The first is created by removing some links from a regular triangular lattice to produce a diluted triangular lattice, and the second by adding more links to create an enhanced triangular lattice. In both those cases, the full range of possible graph densities is discussed, limited by the extreme cases of networks which consist of a small number of separated triads and fully connected networks. It is shown that the existence of the balanced state is not possible if the average node degree is too close to the value characterizing the regular triangular lattice. Otherwise, both balanced (or partially balanced) and imbalanced states are possible, depending on the temperature. However, only for graphs which are dense enough a phase transition of the first kind is observed, while less enhanced networks (and all diluted) indicate a smooth cross-over between the two states. The cross-over temperatures are size-independent only for the diluted triangular lattices and depend on the size of the system for the enhanced triangular lattices, as is the case also for the critical temperatures of the phase transition observed in denser enhanced lattices.

We perform simulations of structural balance evolution on a triangular lattice using the heat-bath algorithm. In contrast to similar approaches---but applied to analysis of complete graphs---the triangular lattice topology successfully prevents the occurrence of even partial Heider balance. Starting with the state of Heider's paradise, it is just a matter of time when the evolution of the system leads to an unbalanced and disordered state. The time of the system relaxation does not depend on the system size. The lack of any signs of a balanced state was not observed in earlier investigated systems dealing with the structural balance.

The state of structural balance (termed also `Heider balance') of a social network is often discussed in social psychology and sociophysics. In this state, actors at network nodes classify other individuals as enemies or friends. Hence, the network contains two kinds of links: positive and negative. Here a new cellular automaton is designed and investigated, which mimics the time evolution towards the structural balance. The automaton is deterministic and synchronous. The medium is the triangular lattice with some fraction $f$ of links removed. We analyse the number of unbalanced triads (parameterized as `energy'), the frequencies of balanced triads and correlations between them. The time evolution enhances the local correlations of balanced triads. Local configurations of unbalanced triads are found which are blinking with period of two time steps.

Here this approach is applied to directed networks with asymmetric relations, and it is generalized to include self-evaluation of actors, according to the 'looking-glass self' theory. A new index of self-acceptance is proposed: the relation of an actor to him/herself is positive, if the majority of his/her positive relations to others are reciprocated. Sets of stable configurations of relations are obtained under the dynamics, where the self-evaluation of some actors is negative. Within each set all configurations have the same structure.

The double-skin roofs investigated in this paper are formed by adding a metallic screen on an existing sheet metal roof. The system enhances passive cooling of dwellings and can help diminishing power costs for air conditioning in summer or in tropical and arid countries. In this work, radiation, convection and conduction heat transfers are investigated. Depending on its surface properties, the screen reflects a large amount of oncoming solar radiation. Natural convection in the channel underneath drives off the residual heat. The bi-dimensional numerical simulation of the heat transfers through the double skin reveals the most important parameters for the system's efficiency. They are, by order of importance, the sheet metal surface emissivity, the screen internal and external surface emissivity, the insulation thickness and the inclination angle for a channel width over 6 cm. The influence of those parameters on Rayleigh and Nusselt numbers is also investigated. Temperature and air velocity profiles on several channel cross-sections are plotted and discussed.

We investigate the network model of community by Watts, Dodds and Newman (D. J. Watts et al., Science 296 (2002) 1302) as a hierarchy of groups, each of 5 individuals. A homophily parameter $α$ controls the probability proportional to $\exp(-αx)$ of selection of neighbours against distance $x$. The network nodes are endowed with spin-like variables $s_i = \pm 1$, with Ising interaction $J>0$. The Glauber dynamics is used to investigate the order-disorder transition. The transition temperature $T_c$ is close to 3.8 for $α< 0.0$ and it falls down to zero above this value. The result provides a mathematical illustration of the social ability to a collective action {\it via} weak ties, as discussed by Granovetter in 1973.
