We study the electrodynamic impedance of percolating conductors with a pre-defined network topology using a scanning microwave impedance microscope (sMIM) at GHz frequencies. For a given percolation number we observe strong spatial variations across a sample which correlate with the connected regions (clusters) in the network when the resistivity is low such as in Aluminum. For the more resistive material NbTiN the impedance becomes dominated by the local structure of the percolating network (connectivity). The results can qualitatively be understood and reproduced with a network current spreading model based on the pseudo-inverse Laplacian of the underlying network graph.

We have realized a microstrip based THz near field cantilever which enables quantitative measurements of the impedance of the probe tip at THz frequencies (0.3 THz). A key feature is the on-chip balanced hybrid coupler which serves as an interferometer for passive signal cancellation to increase the readout circuit sensitivity despite extreme impedance mismatch at the tip. We observe distinct changes in the reflection coefficient of the tip when brought into contact with different dielectric (Si, SrTiO3) and metallic samples (Au). By comparing to finite element simulations we determine the sensitivity of our THz probe to be well below 0.25 fF. The cantilever further allows for topography imaging in a conventional atomic force microscope mode. Our THz cantilever removes several critical technology challenges and thus enables a shielded cantilever based THz near field microscope.

A directional superconducting parametric amplifier in the GHz frequency range is designed and analyzed, suitable for low-power read-out of microwave kinetic inductance detectors employed in astrophysics and when combined with a nonreciprocal device at its input also for circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED). It consists of an one wavelength long nondegenerate Josephson parametric reflection amplifier circuit. The device has two Josephson junction oscillators, connected via a tailored impedance to an on-chip passive circuit which directs the in- to the output port. The amplifier provides a gain of 20 dB over a bandwidth of 220 MHz on the signal as well as on the idler portion of the amplified input and the total photon shot noise referred to the input corresponds to maximally 1.3 photons per second per Hertz of bandwidth. We predict a factor of four increase in dynamic range compared to conventional Josephson parametric amplifiers.

In this paper we present the experimental realization of a Nb tunnel junction connected to a high-gap superconducting NbTiN embedding circuit. We investigate relaxation of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in a small volume Au layer between the Nb tunnel junction and the NbTiN circuit. We find a saturation in the effective heat-transfer coefficient consistent with a simple theoretical model. This saturation is determined by the thickness of the Au layer. Our findings are important for the design of the ideal Au energy relaxation layer for practical SIS heterodyne mixers and we suggest two geometries, one, using a circular Au layer and, two, using a half-circular Au layer. Our work is concluded with an outlook of our future experiments.

This article presents a heterodyne experiment which uses a 380-520 GHz planar circuit balanced Nb-$\mathrm{Al_2O_3}$-Nb superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) quasiparticle mixer with 4-8 GHz instantaneous intermediate frequency (IF) bandwidth to quantitatively determine local oscillator (LO) noise. A balanced mixer is a unique tool to separate noise at the mixer's LO port from other noise sources. This is not possible in single-ended mixers. The antisymmetric IV characteristic of a SIS mixer further helps to simplify the measurements. The double-sideband receiver sensitivity of the balanced mixer is 2-4 times the quantum noise limit $hν/k_B$ over the measured frequencies with a maximum LO noise rejection of 15 dB. This work presents independent measurements with three different LO sources that produce the reference frequency but also an amount of near-carrier noise power which is quantified in the experiment as a function of the LO and IF frequency in terms of an equivalent noise temperature $T_{LO}$. In a second experiment we use only one of two SIS mixers of the balanced mixer chip, in order to verify the influence of near-carrier LO noise power on a single-ended heterodyne mixer measurement. We find an IF frequency dependence of near-carrier LO noise power. The frequency-resolved IF noise temperature slope is flat or slightly negative for the single-ended mixer. This is in contrast to the IF slope of the balanced mixer itself which is positive due to the expected IF roll-off of the mixer. This indicates a higher noise level closer to the LO's carrier frequency. Our findings imply that near-carrier LO noise has the largest impact on the sensitivity of a receiver system which uses mixers with a low IF band, for example superconducting hot-electron bolometer (HEB) mixers.

We find uncorrected minimum receiver double-sideband noise temperatures of 70 K and a noise suppression of up to 18 dB, measured within a 440-495 GHz RF and a 4-8 GHz IF bandwidth, representing state-of-the-art device performance.

A Lamb-shift polarimeter, which has been built for a fast determination of the polarization of protons and deuterons of an atomic-beam source and which is frequently used in the ANKE experiment at COSY-Jülich, is shown to be an excellent device for atomic-spectroscopy measurements of metastable hydrogen isotopes. It is demonstrated that magnetic and electric dipole transitions in hydrogen can be measured as a function of the external magnetic field, giving access to the full Breit-Rabi diagram for the $2^2S_{1/2}$ and the $2^2P_{1/2}$ states. This will allow the study of hyperfine structure, $g$ factors and the classical Lamb shift. Although the data are not yet competitive with state-of-the-art measurements, the potential of the method is enormous, including a possible application to anti-hydrogen spectroscopy.
