In this paper, an analytical formula for the sensitivity of optical sensors based on one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) with a defect was derived for the first time. Based on this formula, a comparative analysis of the sensitivity of defected PCs with and without mirror symmetry was carried out. In addition, the exact values of sensitivity in the limit of an infinite PC with a quarter-wave unit cell were obtained. It was shown that the sensitivity of a defective PC with an infinitely thick defect layer is equal to that of a perfectly reflecting Fabry-Perot resonator and does not depend on the specific structure of the PC. The results of this work provide a significant simplification of the analysis and optimization of optical sensors based on defective PCs, as well as a better understanding of the numerous numerical results obtained previously.

Abstract:
We report the results on theoretical investigation about possible simultaneous laser generation in all, closely spaced modes of chirped photonic crystals layer in all visible region of the spectrum. With the possible ability to control the chir** contrast, it allows to obtain a white laser with a simple system on a chip, which can find wide application.

Abstract:
We investigated numerically the relationship between the lasing threshold, the density of states (DOS), and field localization in 1D photonic crystals (PC) for off-axis laser action. The angular dependence of the corresponding quantities for the two polarizations was obtained, and it was shown that the relationship between the threshold and DOS is complex, especially near the Brewster angle in the…

We investigated numerically the relationship between the lasing threshold, the density of states (DOS), and field localization in 1D photonic crystals (PC) for off-axis laser action. The angular dependence of the corresponding quantities for the two polarizations was obtained, and it was shown that the relationship between the threshold and DOS is complex, especially near the Brewster angle in the case of p-polarization. A strong correlation between the ratio of thresholds and localizations of the two edge modes was found for s-polarization. The results of this work can be used for optimizing lasers based on one-dimensional PCs, both for normal and off-axis lasing.

We propose an improved structure of an optical biosensor based on a photonic crystal (PC) with a defect layer (DL), which can detect the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in water by defect mode (DM) shift. We investigated 4 types of defective PCs with different arrangements of layers inside the perfect PCs and their impact on the performance of the sensor. The sensitivity and amplitude of DM were examined as a function of DL thickness. Also, the peculiarities of edge modes in the presence of DL were investigated. Finally, we obtained a characteristic equation to determine the wavelengths of DMs for an arbitrary 1D PC with an isotropic defect inside.

We propose a new optical biosensor based on a photonic crystal with a defect layer, which can determine the SARS-CoV-2 concentration in water by the defect mode shift. Two models of the dependence of the refractive index of the defect layer on the concentration of the pathogen in water were considered. The optimal parameters for the photonic crystal in our device and the optimal thickness of the defect layer were determined. It was also demonstrated that in the presence of absorption in the investigated structure it is much more advantageous to work in the reflection mode compared to the transmission mode. Finally, the wavelength dependence of the defect mode on the SARS-CoV-2 concentration was obtained and the sensitivity of the sensor was determined.

We propose a new method for calculating reflection and transmission coefficients for an arbitrarily polarized electromagnetic plane wave incident on a one-dimensional dielectric medium of finite thickness and with dielectric permittivity being an arbitrary continuous function of the coordinate. We have shown that the problem of plane wave scattering by an inhomogeneous layer is reduced to a system of first order differential equations that contain the derivative of the refractive index or dielectric permittivity of the layer, which can be used, for example, when searching for an analytical solution. This method also makes it easy to obtain the distribution of the field strength within the layer. The reflection spectra and field distribution obtained using this method were compared with the analytical solution based on Mathieu functions.
