Effective conductivities of some multi-color, isotropic, regular tessellations
Abstract: Algebraic expressions are found for the effective conductivities of some infinite tessellations composed of conducting square, triangular, or hexagonal tiles. A tessellation is further characterized by the number N of different colors (different tile conductivities) represented. Tiles of a color are distributed randomly, and constitute an areal fraction 1/N of the tessellation. The expressions tak… ▽ More

Transport properties of the Menger sponge
Abstract: The Menger sponge is a three-dimensional cube that comprises a self-similar, fractal domain and a non-fractal domain, both of which are continuous. Thus it is a useful heuristic model for natural and engineered fractal systems. For this purpose the effective transport coefficient associated with the transport properties (e.g., electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity) of the sponge is derived… ▽ More

Fluid infiltration of a heterogeneous medium: A stochastic model
Abstract: Fluid infiltration of a permeable brick in contact with a pressurized reservoir of fluid is considered. A stochastic model, informed by Darcy's law and the incompressibility of the fluid, shows how the heterogeneity of the permeability field affects the time evolution of the fluid infiltration. In particular, the cause of anomalous (non-Darcian) advance of a plume is determined. The model is appli… ▽ More

Random walker derivation of Archie's law
Abstract: The empirical Archie's law, relating the measured electrical resistivity of an electrolyte-saturated rock to its connected porosity, is derived by consideration of the fractal character of the pore space. The derivation thus imposes some conditions on the implementation and meaning of Archie's law.

Percolation properties of the classic Sierpinski carpet and sponge
Abstract: Iterative construction of a Sierpinski carpet or sponge is shown to be a critical phenomenon analogous to uncorrelated percolation. Critical exponents are derived or calculated (by random walks over the carpet or sponge at infinite iteration) that are related by equations identical to those obtained from percolation theory. Finite-size scaling then gives accurate values for the scalar transport pr… ▽ More

Exact method for determining subsurface radioactivity depth profiles from gamma spectroscopy measurements
Abstract: Subsurface radioactivity may be due to transport of radionuclides from a contaminated surface into the solid volume, as occurs for radioactive fallout deposited on soil, or from fast neutron activation of a solid volume, as occurs in concrete blocks used for radiation shielding. For purposes including fate and transport studies of radionuclides in the environment, decommissioning and decontaminati… ▽ More

Phenomenological model for predicting the energy resolution of neutron-damaged coaxial HPGe detectors
Abstract: The peak energy resolution of germanium detectors deteriorates with increasing neutron fluence. This is due to hole capture at neutron-created defects in the crystal which prevents the full energy of the gamma-ray from being recorded by the detector. A phenomenological model of coaxial HPGe detectors is developed that relies on a single, dimensionless parameter that is related to the probability f… ▽ More

Iterative method for solution of radiation emission/transmission matrix equations
Abstract: An iterative method is derived for image reconstruction. Among other attributes, this method allows constraints unrelated to the radiation measurements to be incorporated into the reconstructed image. A comparison is made with the widely used Maximum-Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM) algorithm.

Derivation of the residence time for kinetic Monte Carlo simulations
Abstract: The kinetic Monte Carlo method is a standard approach for simulating physical systems whose dynamics are stochastic or that evolve in a probabilistic manner. Here we show how to calculate the system time for such simulations.
