Abstract:
We study the diffraction of a particular class of beams, composed only by a combination of azimuthally invariant guided modes of an optical fiber. We demonstrate that such beams can be obtained by injecting a Gaussian beam in a small piece of silica graded-index multimode fiber. This minimalistic low-cost method is applied for improving the axial resolution of a two-photon microscope.

We demonstrate how a narrowband pump and a broadband spectrum can be spatially multiplexed by selective coupling them in two distinct modes of a few-mode microstructure fiber. The first mode carries most of the input pump energy, and experiences spectral broadening. Whereas the second mode preserves the narrow bandwidth of the remaining part of the pump. Bimodal propagation, with a power unbalance strongly in favor of the fundamental mode, is naturally obtained by maximizing coupling into the fundamental mode of the fiber. At the fiber output, the nearly monochromatic beam and the supercontinuum carried by the two different modes are combined by a microscope objective, and used as a pump and a Stokes wave for self-referenced multiplex coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering micro-spectroscopy. The spectral resolution, the signal-to-noise-ratio, and the possible amplification of the remaining pump beam are discussed.

We introduce and experimentally demonstrate the concept of all-optical beam switching in graded-index multimode optical fibers. Nonlinear coupling between orthogonally polarized seed and signal beams permits to control the spatial beam quality at the fiber output. Remarkably, we show that even a weak few-mode control beam may substantially enhance the quality of an intense, highly multimode signal beam. We propose a simple geometrical representation of the beam switching operation, whose validity is quantitatively confirmed by the experimental mode decomposition of the output beam. All-optical switching of multimode beams may find important applications in high-power beam delivery and fiber lasers.

Simulations confirm that beam cleaning of the signal may take place even in amplifying fibers, that is the absence of beam energy conservation. Moreover, we show how the local signal intensity maxima, which are periodically generated by the self-imaging process, may influence the population inversion of the do** atoms, and locally saturate the amplifier gain.

Atoms ionization by the simultaneous absorption of multiple photons has found applications in fiber optics, where it leads to unique nonlinear phenomena. To date, studies of the ionization regime have been limited to gas-filled hollow-core fibers. Here, we investigate multiphoton ionization of standard optical fibers, where intense laser pulses ionize the atoms constituting the fiber structure itself, instead of that of the filling gas. We characterize material modifications produced by optical breakdown. Their formation affects laser beam dynamics over hours long temporal scales. The damage features are studied by means of optical microscopy and X-ray microtomography. In the framework of glass photonics, our results pave the way for a novel glass waveguide micromachining technique.

In this work we present the experimental demonstration of the spontaneous generation of spatially localized two-dimensional beams in a quadratic nonlinear crystal, which are composed by twin components at the fundamental and the second-harmonic frequencies. Research on multimode optical fibers is arousing a growing interest, for their capability to transport high-power laser beams, coupled with novel nonlinear optics-based applications. However, when beam intensities exceed a certain critical value, optical fiber breakdown associated with irreversible modifications of their refractive index occurs, triggered by multiphoton absorption. These processes have been largely exploited for fiber material microstructuration. Here we show that, for intensities slightly below the breakdown threshold, nonlinear absorption strongly affects the dynamics of a propagating beam as well. We experimentally analyze this sub-threshold regime, and highlight the key role played by spatial self-imaging in graded-index fibers for enhancing nonlinear optical losses. We characterize the nonlinear power transmission properties of multimode fibers for femtosecond pulses propagating in the near-infrared spectral range. We show that an effective N-photon absorption analytical model is able to describe well the experimental data.

Driven by the interplay between Kerr effect and beam self-imaging, BSC counteracts random mode coupling, and forces laser beams to recover a quasi-single mode profile at the output of GRIN fibres. Here we show that the associated self-induced spatiotemporal resha** allows for improving the performances of nonlinear fluorescence microscopy and endoscopy using multimode optical fibres. We experimentally demonstrate that the beam brightness increase, induced by self-cleaning, enables two and three-photon imaging of biological samples with high spatial resolution. Temporal pulse shortening accompanying spatial beam clean-up enhances the output peak power, hence the efficiency of nonlinear imaging. We also show that spatiotemporal supercontinuum generation is well-suited for large-band nonlinear fluorescence imaging in visible and infrared domains. We substantiated our findings by multiphoton fluorescence imaging in both microscopy and endoscopy configurations.

We demonstrate a new practical approach for generating multicolour spiral-shaped beams. It makes use of a standard silica optical fibre, combined with a titled input laser beam. The resulting breaking of the fibre axial symmetry leads to the propagation of a helical beam. The associated output far-field has spiral shape, independently of the input laser power value. Whereas, with a high-power near-infrared femtosecond laser, a visible supercontinuum spiral emission is generated. With appropriate control of the input laser coupling conditions, the colours of the spiral spatially self-organize in a rainbow distribution. Our method is independent of the laser source wavelength and polarization. Therefore, standard optical fibres may be used for generating spiral beams in many applications, ranging from communications to optical tweezers and quantum optics.

A low intensity light beam emerges from a graded-index, highly multimode optical fibre with a speckled shape, while at higher intensity the Kerr nonlinearity may induce a spontaneous spatial self-cleaning of the beam [1,2]. Here, we reveal that we can generate two self-cleaned beams with a mutual coherence large enough to produce a clear stable fringe pattern at the output of a nonlinear interferometer. The two beams are pumped by the same input laser, yet are self-cleaned into independent multimode fibres. We thus prove that the self-cleaning mechanism preserves the beams' mutual coherence via a noise-free parametric process. While directly related to the initial pump coherence, the emergence of nonlinear spatial coherence is achieved without additional noise, even for self-cleaning obtained on different modes, and in spite of the fibre structural disorder originating from intrinsic imperfections or external perturbations. Our discovery may impact theoretical approaches on wave condensation [3-5], and open new opportunities for coherent beam combining [6-9].

Beam self-imaging in nonlinear graded-index multimode optical fibers is of interest for many applications, such as implementing a fast saturable absorber mechanism in fiber lasers via multimode interference. We obtain an exact solution for the nonlinear evolution of first and second order moments of a laser beam carried by a graded-index multimode fiber, predicting that the spatial self-imaging period does not vary with power. Whereas the amplitude of the oscillation of the beam width is power-dependent. We have experimentally studied the longitudinal evolution of beam self-imaging by means of femtosecond laser pulse propagation in both the anomalous and the normal dispersion regime of a standard telecom graded-index multimode optical fiber. Light scattering out of the fiber core via visible fluorescence emission and harmonic wave generation permits us to directly confirm that the self-imaging period is invariant with power. Spatial shift and splitting of the self-imaging process under the action of self-focusing are also emphasized.

In the active configuration, gain from the pump laser diode permits to combine beam self-cleaning with supercontinuum generation between 520-2600 nm. By taper cut-back, we observed that the dissipative landscape i.e., a non-monotonic variation of the average beam power along the MMF leads to modal transitions of self-cleaned beams along the taper length.

We introduce the concept of spatial and spectral control of nonlinear parametric sidebands in multimode optical fibers by tailoring their linear refractive index profile. In all cases, the pump experiences Kerr self-cleaning, leading to a bell-shaped profile close to the fundamental mode. Geometric parametric instability, owing to quasi-phase-matching from the grating generated via the Kerr effect by pump self-imaging, leads to frequency multicasting of beam self-cleaning across a wideband array of sidebands. Our experiments show that introducing a gaussian dip in the refractive index profile of a graded index fiber permits to dramatically change the spatial content of spectral sidebands into higher-order modes. This is due to the breaking of oscillation synchronism among fundamental and higher-order modes. Hence modal-four-wave mixing prevails over geometric parametric instability as the main sideband generation mechanism. Observations agree well with theoretical predictions based on a perturbative analysis, and with full numerical solutions of the (3D + 1) nonlinear Schrodinger equation.

We overview recent advances in the research on spatiotemporal beam sha** in nonlinear multimode optical fibers. An intense light beam coupled to a graded index (GRIN) highly multimode fiber undergoes a series of complex nonlinear processes when its power grows larger. Among them, the lowest threshold effect is the Kerr-induced beam self-cleaning, that redistributes most of the beam energy into a robust bell-shaped beam close to the fundamental mode. At higher powers a series of spectral sidebands is generated, thanks to the phase matching induced by the long period grating due to the periodic self-imaging of the beam and the Kerr effect. Subsequently a broadband and spectrally flat supercontinuum is generated, extending from the visible to the mid-infrared.

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the process of seeded intermodal four-wave mixing in a graded index multimode fiber, pumped in the normal dispersion regime. By using a fiber with a 100 micron core diameter, we generate a parametric sideband in the C band (1530-1565 nm), hence allowing the use of an Erbium-based laser to seed the mixing process. To limit nonlinear coupling between the pump and the seed to low-order fiber modes, the waist diameter of the pump beam is properly adjusted. We observe that the superimposed seed stimulates the generation of new spectral sidebands. A detailed characterization of the spectral and spatial properties of these sidebands shows good agreement with theoretical predictions from the phase-matching conditions. Interestingly, we demonstrate that both the second and the fourth-order dispersions must be included in the phase matching conditions to get better agreement with experimental measurements. Furthermore, temporal measurements performed with a fast photodiode reveal the generation of multiple pulse structures.

We experimentally demonstrate simultaneous spatial and temporal compression in the propagation of light pulses in multimode nonlinear optical fibers. We reveal that the spatial beam self-cleaning recently discovered in graded-index multimode fibers is accompanied by significant temporal resha** and up to four-fold shortening of the injected sub-nanosecond laser pulses. Since the nonlinear coupling among the modes strongly depends on the instantaneous power, we explore the entire range of the nonlinear dynamics with a single optical pulse, where the optical power is continuously varied across the pulse profile.

Power distribution grids are exploited by Power Line Communication (PLC) technology to convey high frequency data signals. The natural conformation of such power line networks causes a relevant part of the high frequency signals traveling through them to be radiated instead of being conducted. This causes not only electromagnetic interference (EMI) with devices positioned next to power line cables, but also a consistent deterioration of the signal integrity. Since existing PLC channel models do not take into account losses due to radiation phenomena, this paper responds to the need of develo** accurate network simulators. A thorough analysis is herein presented about the conducted and radiated effects on the signal integrity, digging into differential mode to common mode signal conversion due to network imbalances. The outcome of this work allows each network element to be described by a mixed-mode transmission matrix. Furthermore, the classical per-unit-length equivalent circuit of transmission lines is extended to incorporate radiation resistances. The results of this paper lay the foundations for future developments of comprehensive power line network models that incorporate conducted and radiated phenomena.

A major aspect in power line distribution networks is the constant monitoring of the network properties. With the advent of the smart grid concept, distributed monitoring has started complementing the information of the central stations. In this context, power line communications modems deployed throughout the network provide a tool to monitor high frequency components of the signals traveling through a power line network. We propose therefore to use them not only as communication devices but also as network sensors. Besides classical voltage measurements, these sensors can be designed to monitor high frequency impedances, which provide useful information about the power line network, as for instance status of the topology, cable degradation and occurrence of faults. In this article, we provide a technical analysis of different voltage and impedance measurement techniques that can be integrated into power line modems. We assess the accuracy of the techniques under analysis in the presence of network noise and we discuss the statistical characteristics of the measurement noise. We finally compare the performances of the examined techniques when applied to the fault detection problem in distribution networks, in order to establish which technique gives more accurate results.

Multimode optical fibres are enjoying a renewed attention, boosted by the urgent need to overcome the current capacity crunch of single-mode fibre systems and by recent advances in multimode complex nonlinear optics [1-13]. In this work, we demonstrate that standard multimode fibres can be used as ultrafast all-optical tool for transverse beam manipulation of high power laser pulses. Our experimental data show that the Kerr effect in a graded-index multimode fibre is the driving mechanism for overcoming speckle distortions, leading to a somewhat counter-intuitive effect resulting in a spatially clean output beam robust against fibre bending. Our observations demonstrate that nonlinear beam resha** into the fundamental mode of a multimode fibre can be achieved even in the absence of a dissipative process such as stimulated scattering (Raman or Brillouin) [14,15].

Spatio-temporal mode coupling in highly multimode physical systems permits new routes for exploring complex instabilities and forming coherent wave structures. We present here the first experimental demonstration of multiple geometric parametric instability sidebands, generated in the frequency domain through resonant space-time coupling, owing to the natural periodic spatial self-imaging of a multimode quasi-continuous-wave beam in a standard graded-index multimode fiber. The input beam was launched in the fiber by means of an amplified microchip laser emitting sub-nanosecond pulses at 1064 nm. The experimentally observed frequency spacing among sidebands agrees well with analytical predictions and numerical simulations. The first order peaks are located at the considerably large detuning of 123.5 THz from the pump. These results open the remarkable possibility to convert a near-infrared laser directly into a broad spectral range spanning visible and infrared wavelengths, by means of a single resonant parametric nonlinear effect occurring in the normal dispersion regime. As a further evidence of our strong space-time coupling regime, we observed the striking effect that all of the different sideband peaks were carried by a well-defined and stable bell-shaped spatial profile.

The presence of three zeros in the dispersion curve, their spectral separation from the pump wavelength, and the complex dynamics of solitons originated by the pump pulse break-up, all contribute to boost the amplitude of the dispersive wave on the long-wavelength side of the pump. The measured conversion efficiency towards the dispersive wave at 1548 nm is as high as 50%. Our experimental analysis of the output spectra is completed by the acquisition of the time delays of the different spectral components. Numerical simulations and an analytical perturbative analysis identify the central wavelength of the red-shifted pump solitons and the dispersion profile of the fiber as the key parameters for determining the efficiency of the dispersive wave generation process.
