Viscosity bounds in liquids with different structure and bonding types
Abstract: Recently, it was realised that liquid viscosity has a lower bound which is nearly constant for all liquids and is governed by fundamental physical constants. This was supported by experimental data in noble and molecular liquids. Here, we perform large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to ascertain this bound in two other important liquid types: the ionic molten salt system LiF and metallic Pb.… ▽ More

Production and Integration of the ATLAS Insertable B-Layer
Abstract: During the shutdown of the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2013-2014, an additional pixel layer was installed between the existing Pixel detector of the ATLAS experiment and a new, smaller radius beam pipe. The motivation for this new pixel layer, the Insertable B-Layer (IBL), was to maintain or improve the robustness and performance of the ATLAS tracking system, given the higher instantaneous and i… ▽ More

Carrier-Resolved Photo Hall Measurement in World-Record-Quality Perovskite and Kesterite Solar Absorbers
Abstract: Majority and minority carrier properties such as type, density and mobility represent fundamental yet difficult to access parameters governing semiconductor device performance, most notably solar cells. Obtaining this information simultaneously under light illumination would unlock many critical parameters such as recombination lifetime, recombination coefficient, and diffusion length; while deepl… ▽ More

Inelastic electron injection in a water chain
Abstract: Irradiation of biological matter triggers a cascade of secondary particles that interact with their surroundings, resulting in damage. Low-energy electrons are one of the main secondary species and electron-phonon interaction plays a fundamental role in their dynamics. We have developed a method to capture the electron-phonon inelastic energy exchange in real time and have used it to inject electr… ▽ More

Self-Compression and Controllable Guidance of Multi-Millijoule Femtosecond Laser Pulses
Abstract: Self-compression of multi-millijoule femtosecond laser pulses and dramatic increase of the peak intensity are found in pressurized helium and neon within a range of intensity in which the ionization modification of the material parameters by the pulse is negligible. The pulse propagation is studied by the (3+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation including basic lowest order optical proc… ▽ More

Self-Compression of High-Intensity Femtosecond Laser Pulses in Low Dispersion Regime
Abstract: Self-compression of femtosecond laser pulses and more than an order of magnitude increase of the peak intensity is found in a positive dispersion medium in low dispersion regime based on the (3+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation. A method of high-intensity femtosecond pulse formation can be developed on that basis.

Einstein and Hilbert: The Creation of General Relativity
Abstract: It took eight years after Einstein announced the basic physical ideas behind the relativistic gravity theory before the proper mathematical formulation of general relativity was mastered. The efforts of the greatest physicist and of the greatest mathematician of the time were involved and reached a breathtaking concentration during the last month of the work. Recent controversy, raised by a mu… ▽ More

Reconstruction of electrons with the Gaussian-sum filter in the CMS tracker at LHC
Abstract: The bremsstrahlung energy loss distribution of electrons propagating in matter is highly non Gaussian. Because the Kalman filter relies solely on Gaussian probability density functions, it might not be an optimal reconstruction algorithm for electron tracks. A Gaussian-sum filter (GSF) algorithm for electron track reconstruction in the CMS tracker has therefore been developed. The basic idea is… ▽ More
