A model for photoassociation of ultracold atoms and molecules is presented, and applied to the case of $^{39}$K and $^{23}$Na$^{39}$K bosonic particles. The model relies on the assumption that photoaossociation is dominated by long-range atom-molecule interactions, well outside the chemical bond region. The frequency of the photoassociation laser is chosen close to a bound-bound rovibronic transition from the $X^1Σ^+$ ground state toward the metastable $b^3Π$ lowest excited state of $^{23}$Na$^{39}$K, allowing to neglect any other excitation which could hinder the photoassociation detection. The energy level structure of the long-range $^{39}$K$\cdots$$^{23}$Na$^{39}$K excited super-dimer is computed in the space-fixed frame by solving coupled-channel equations, involving the coupling between the $^{23}$Na$^{39}$K internal rotation with the mechanical rotation of the super-dimer complex. A quite rich structure is obtained, and the corresponding photoassociation rates are presented. Other possible photossociation transitions are discussed in the context of the proposed model.

Three-body recombination is a chemical reaction where the collision of three atoms leads to the formation of a diatomic molecule. In the ultracold regime it is expected that the production rate of a molecule generally decreases with its binding energy $E_b$, however, its precise dependence and the physics governing it have been left unclear so far. Here, we present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the energy dependency for three-body recombination of ultracold Rb. For this, we determine production rates for molecules in a state-to-state resolved manner, with the binding energies $E_b$ ranging from 0.02 to 77 GHz$\times h$. We find that the formation rate approximately scales as $E_b^{-α}$, where $α$ is in the vicinity of 1. The formation rate typically varies only within a factor of two for different rotational angular momenta of the molecular product, apart from a possible centrifugal barrier suppression for low binding energies. In addition to numerical three-body calculations we present a perturbative model which reveals the physical origin of the energy scaling of the formation rate. Furthermore, we show that the scaling law potentially holds universally for a broad range of interaction potentials.

We study the coupled system obtaining molecular parameters for the $(2)^2Σ^+$ and the $(1)^2Π$ state together with effective spin-orbit and spin-rotation coupling constants. The coupled system has also been evaluated by applying a potential function instead of rovibrational molecular parameters for the state $(2)^2Σ^+$. An improved analytic potential function of the $X(1)^2Σ^+$ state is derived, due to the extension of the observed rotational ladder.

We explore the physical origin and the general validity of a propensity rule for the conservation of the hyperfine spin state in three-body recombination. This rule was recently discovered for the special case of $^{87}$Rb with its nearly equal singlet and triplet scattering lengths. Here, we test the propensity rule for $^{85}$Rb for which the scattering properties are very different from $^{87}$Rb. The Rb$_2$ molecular product distribution is mapped out in a state-to-state fashion using REMPI detection schemes which fully cover all possible molecular spin states. Interestingly, for the experimentally investigated range of binding energies from zero to $\sim13\:\textrm{GHz}\times h$ we observe that the spin-conservation propensity rule also holds for $^{85}$Rb. From these observations and a theoretical analysis we derive an understanding for the conservation of the hyperfine spin state. We identify several criteria to judge whether the propensity rule will also hold for other elements and collision channels.

For the $p$-wave Feshbach resonances we observe triplet structures corresponding to different projections of the pair rotation angular momentum onto the external magnetic field axis.
We attribute the splittings to the spin-spin and spin-rotation couplings by modelling the observation using a full coupled-channel calculation. Comparison with an oversimplified model, estimating the spin-rotation coupling by describing the weakly bound close-channel molecular state with the perturbative multipole expansion, reveals the significant contribution of the molecular wavefunction at short internuclear distances. Our findings highlight the potential of Feshbach resonances in providing precise information on short- and intermediate-range molecular couplings and wavefunctions. The observed $d$-wave Feshbach resonances allow us to refine the LiCs singlet and triplet ground-state molecular potential curves at large internuclear separations.

By employing magnetic field dependent atom-loss spectroscopy we find triplet structures in $p$-wave resonances. Comparison with coupled-channel calculations, including contributions from both spin-spin and spin-rotation interactions, yields a spin-rotation coupling parameter $|γ|=0.566(50)\times10^{-3}$. Our findings highlight the potential of Feshbach resonances in revealing subtle molecular couplings and providing precise information on electronic and nuclear wavefunctions, especially at short internuclear distance. The existence of a non-negligible spin-rotation splitting may have consequences for future classifications of $p$-wave superfluid phases in spin-polarized fermions.

Quantum probes are atomic-sized devices map** information of their environment to quantum mechanical states. By improving measurements and at the same time minimizing perturbation of the environment, they form a central asset for quantum technologies. We realize spin-based quantum probes by immersing individual Cs atoms into an ultracold Rb bath. Controlling inelastic spin-exchange processes between probe and bath allows map** motional and thermal information onto quantum-spin states. We show that the steady-state spin-population is well suited for absolute thermometry, reducing temperature measurements to detection of quantum spin distributions. Moreover, we find that the information gain per inelastic collision can be maximized by accessing the nonequilibrium spin dynamic. The sensitivity of nonequilibrium quantum probing effectively beats the steady-state Cramér Rao limit of quantum probing by almost an order of magnitude, while reducing the perturbation of the bath to only three quanta of angular momentum. Our work paves the way for local probing of quantum systems at the Heisenberg limit, and moreover for optimizing measurement strategies via control of nonequilibrium dynamics.

We employ collisions of individual atomic cesium (Cs) impurities with an ultracold rubidium (Rb) gas to probe atomic interaction with hyperfine- and Zeeman-state sensitivity. Controlling the Rb bath's internal state yields access to novel phenomena observed in inter-atomic spin-exchange. These can be tailored at ultra-low energies, owing to the excellent experimental control over all relevant energy scales. First, detecting spin-exchange dynamics in the Cs hyperfine state manifold, we resolve a series of previously unreported Feshbach resonances at magnetic fields below 300 mG, separated by energies as low as $h\times 15$ kHz. The series originates from a coupling to molecular states with binding energies below $h\times 1$ kHz and wave function extensions in the micrometer range. Second, at magnetic fields below $\approx 100\,$mG, we observe the emergence of a new reaction path for alkali atoms, where in a single, direct collision between two atoms two quanta of angular momentum can be transferred. This path originates from the hyperfine-analogue of dipolar spin-spin relaxation. Our work yields control of subtle ultra-low-energy features of atomic collision dynamics, opening new routes for advanced state-to-state chemistry, for controlling spin-exchange in quantum many-body systems for solid state simulations, or for determination of high-precision molecular potentials.

Experimental investigation of such state-to-state chemistry requires both the preparation of the reactants and the detection of the products in a quantum state resolved way, which has been a long term challenge. Using the high level control in the ultracold domain, we prepare a few-body quantum state of reactants and demonstrate state-to-state chemistry with unprecedented resolution. We present measurements and accompanying theoretical analysis for the recombination of three spin-polarized ultracold Rb atoms forming a weakly bound Rb$_2$ dimer. Detailed insights of the reaction process are obtained that suggest propensity rules for the distribution of reaction products. As spectroscopic methods we use short-range photoassociation of ultracold Rb atoms as well as photoexcitation of ultracold molecules which have been previously prepared in several well-defined quantum states of the $a^3Σ_u^+$ potential. As a byproduct, we present optical two-photon transfer of weakly bound Feshbach molecules into $a^3Σ_u^+$, $\text{v}=0$ levels featuring different nuclear spin quantum numbers. A simple model reproduces well the molecular level structures of the $c^3Σ_g^+$ vibrational states and provides a consistent assignment of the measured resonance lines. Furthermore, the model can be used to predict the relative transition strengths of the lines. From fits to the data we extract for each vibrational level the rotational constant, the effective spin-spin interaction constant, as well as the Fermi contact parameter and (for the first time) the anisotropic hyperfine constant. In an alternative approach, we perform coupled-channel calculations where we fit the relevant potential energy curves, spin-orbit interactions and hyperfine functions. The calculations reproduce the measured hyperfine level term frequencies with an average uncertainty of $\pm9\:$MHz, similar as for the simple model. From these fits we obtain a section of the potential energy curve for the $c^3Σ_g^+$ state which can be used for predicting the level structure for the vibrational manifold $\text{v}'=0$ to $13$ of this electronic state.

We study the combination of hyperfine and Zeeman structure in the spin-orbit coupled $A^1Σ_u^+-b^3Π_u$ complex of $^{87}\textrm{Rb}_2$. For this purpose, absorption spectroscopy at a magnetic field around $B=1000\:\textrm{G}$ is carried out. We drive optical dipole transitions from the lowest rotational state of an ultracold Feshbach molecule to various vibrational levels with $0^+$ symmetry of the $A-b$ complex. In contrast to previous measurements with rotationally excited alkali-dimers, we do not observe equal spacings of the hyperfine levels. In addition, the spectra vary substantially for different vibrational quantum numbers, and exhibit large splittings of up to $160\:\textrm{MHz}$, unexpected for $0^+$ states. The level structure is explained to be a result of the repulsion between the states $0^+$ and $0^-$ of $b^3Π_u$, coupled via hyperfine and Zeeman interactions. In general, $0^-$ and $0^+$ have a spin-orbit induced energy spacing $Δ$, that is different for the individual vibrational states. From each measured spectrum we are able to extract $Δ$, which otherwise is not easily accessible in conventional spectroscopy schemes. We obtain values of $Δ$ in the range of $\pm 100\:\textrm{GHz}$ which can be described by coupled channel calculations if a spin-orbit coupling is introduced that is different for $0^-$ and $0^+$ of $b^3Π_u$.

We study the interspecies scattering properties of ultracold Li-Cs mixtures in their two energetically lowest spin channels in the magnetic field range between 800 G and 1000 G. Close to two broad Feshbach resonances we create weakly bound LiCs dimers by radio-frequency association and measure the dependence of the binding energy on the external magnetic field strength. Based on the binding energies and complementary atom loss spectroscopy of three other Li-Cs s-wave Feshbach resonances we construct precise molecular singlet and triplet electronic ground state potentials using a coupled-channels calculation. We extract the Li-Cs interspecies scattering length as a function of the external field and obtain almost a ten-fold improvement in the precision of the values for the pole positions and widths of the s-wave Li-Cs Feshbach resonances as compared to our previous work [Pires \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{112}, 250404 (2014)]. We discuss implications on the Efimov scenario and the universal geometric scaling for LiCsCs trimers.

We demonstrate how the accuracy of the ABM can be stepwise improved by including magnetic dipole-dipole interactions and coupling to a non-dominant virtual state. We present a MQDT calculation, where magnetic dipole-dipole and second order spin-orbit interactions are included. A frame transformation formalism is introduced, which allows the assignment of measured FRs with only three parameters. All three models achieve a total rms error of < 1G on the observed FRs. We critically compare the different models in view of the accuracy for the description of FRs and the required input parameters for the calculations.

Starting with the well characterized ground state $X^1Σ^+_g$ from former work we derived excited energy levels and report on the evaluation of the $A^1Σ^+_u$ excited state, which is found to interact with another electronic state, which we identify as the lower part of the (1)$^1Π_u$ state. A coupled channels fit to the level energies of the upper state yields a reliable potential energy curve for the $A^1Σ^+_u$ for the range of vibrational levels 1 $\le$ $v'$ $\le$ 46. A potential energy curve for the (1)$^1Π_u$ state is proposed, but the (1)$^1Π_u$ state is only characterized by its coupling to the A state, and no direct transition to a level of the (1)$^1Π_u$ could be uniquely identified due to the overlap** spectral structures.

Using two different spin combinations, several s-wave and p-wave resonances are identified by observing a high inelastic loss and a temperature rising for both species near resonant magnetic field values. The two s-wave resonances observed below 500 G between atoms in the lowest energy level are possible candidates for Feshbach molecule association. Our results are well characterized by a coupled-channel model and are used refining the ground state interaction potentials between $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb. This work opens up the prospect for preparing ultracold ensembles of ground-state bosonic NaRb molecules which are chemically stable and can provide strong dipolar interactions.

Three-body recombination is a prime example of the fundamental interaction between three particles. Due to the complexity of this process it has resisted a comprehensive description. Experimental investigations have mainly focussed on the observation of corresponding loss rates without revealing information on the reaction products. Here, we provide the first general experimental study on the population distribution of molecular quantum states after three-body recombination in a non-resonant regime. We have developed a highly sensitive detection scheme which combines photoionization of the molecules with subsequent ion trap**. By analyzing the ionization spectrum, we identify the population of energy levels with binding energies up to $h\times 750\:$GHz. We find a broad population of electronic and nuclear spin states and determine a range of populated vibrational and rotational states. The method presented here can be expanded to provide a full survey of the products of the recombination process. This may be pivotal in develo** an in-depth model that can qualitatively and quantitatively predict the reaction products of three-body recombination.

Fits of the resonance position based on the undressed Asymptotic Bound State model do not provide the same level of accuracy as the coupled-channels calculation. Several broad s-wave resonances provide prospects to create fermionic LiCs molecules with a large dipole moment via Feshbach association followed by stimulated Raman passage. Two of the s-wave resonances overlap with a zero crossing of the Cs scattering length which offers prospects for the investigation of polarons in an ultracold Li-Cs mixture.

The scattering length derived from the improved interaction potentials is experimentally confirmed and deviates from previously reported values in sign and magnitude. The three-body loss signatures of 30 incoming s- and p-wave magnetic Feshbach resonances over the range 0 to 667 G have been catalogued. Magnetic field modulation spectroscopy was used to observe molecular states bound by up to 2.5 MHz$\times h$. Magnetic moment spectroscopy along the magneto-association pathway from 197 to 182 G gives results consistent with the observed and calculated dependence of the binding energy on magnetic field strength. We have created RbCs Feshbach molecules using two of the resonances. We have set up a coupled-channel model of the interaction and have used direct least-squares fitting to refine its parameters to fit the experimental results from the Feshbach molecules, in addition to the Feshbach resonance positions and the spectroscopic results for deeply bound levels. The final model gives a good description of all the experimental results and predicts a large resonance near 790 G, which may be useful for tuning the interspecies scattering properties. Quantum numbers and vibrational wavefunctions from the model can also be used to choose optimal initial states of Feshbach molecules for their transfer to the rovibronic ground state using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP).

Energy shifts in the spectrum are observed due to singlet-triplet mixing at binding energies as deep as a few hundred GHz x h. This information together with data from other sources is used to optimize the potentials of the triplet and singlet states in a coupled-channel model. We find that the hyperfine structure depends weakly on the vibrational level. This provides a possible explanation for inaccuracies in recent Feshbach resonance calculations.

Precise potentials for the ground state X1Sigma+g and the minimum region of the excited state 2_1Sigma+u of Sr2 are derived by high resolution Fourier-transform spectroscopy of fluorescence progressions from single frequency laser excitation of Sr2 produced in a heat pipe at 950 Celsius. A change of the rotational assignment by four units compared to an earlier work (G. Gerber, R. Möller, and H. Schneider, J. Chem. Phys. 81, 1538 (1984)) is needed for a consistent description leading to a significant shift of the potentials towards longer inter atomic distances. The huge amount of ground state data derived for the three different isotopomers 88Sr2, 86Sr88Sr and 87Sr88Sr (almost 60% of all excisting bound rovibrational ground state levels for the isotopomer 88Sr2) fixes this assignment undoubtedly. The presented ground state potential is derived from the observed transitions for the radial region from 4 to 11 A (9 cm-1 below the asymptote) and is extended to the longe range region by the use of theoretical dispersion coefficients together with already available photoassociation data. New estimations of the scattering lengths for the complete set of isotopic combinations are derived by mass scaling with the derived potential. The data set for the excited state 2_1Sigma+u was sufficient to derive a potential energy curve around the minimum.

The molecules are prepared in a highly collimated particle beam and are interrogated in a $Λ$-type excitation scheme of optical transitions to long range levels close to the asymptote of the ground state, using the electronically excited state A $^1Σ^+_{\rm u}$ as intermediate one. The precise relative position of the triplet levels with respect of the singlet levels was achieved by including the excitation energies from the X^1Σ_g^+ state to the 2^3Π_g state and down to the a^3Σ_u^+ state in the simultaneous fit of both potentials. The derived precise potential curves allow for reliable modeling of cold collisions of pairs of potassium atoms in their ^2S ground state.

Abstract:
A comprehensive study of the electronic states at the 4s+5s asymptote in KRb is presented. Abundant spectroscopic data on the \astate state were collected by Fourier-transform spectroscopy which allow to determine an accurate experimental potential energy curve up to 14.8 Å. The existing data set (C. Amiot et al. J. Chem. Phys. 112, 7068 (2000)) on the ground state \Xstate was extended by severa…

J. Chem. Phys. 112, 7068 (2000)) on the ground state \Xstate was extended by several additional levels lying close to the atomic asymptote. In a coupled channels fitting routine complete molecular potentials for both electronic states were fitted. Along with the line frequencies of the molecular transitions, recently published positions of Feshbach resonances in $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb mixtures (F. Ferlaino et al. Phys. Rev. A 74, 039903 (2006)) were included in the fit. This makes the derived potential curves capable for an accurate description of observed cold collision features so far. Predictions of scattering lengths and Feshbach resonances in other isotopic combinations are reported.

By exciting molecules through the X$^1Σ^+$-B$^1Π$ and X$^1Σ^+$-D$^1Π$ transitions vibrational levels of the X$^1Σ^+$ ground state have been observed up to 3cm^{-1} below the dissociation limit enabling an accurate construction of the potential. Furthermore, rovibrational levels in the a$^3Σ^+$ triplet ground state have been observed because the excited states obtain sufficient triplet character at the corresponding excited atomic asymptote. With the help of coupled channels calculations accurate singlet and triplet ground state potentials were derived reaching the atomic ground state asymptote and allowing first predictions of cold collision properties of Li + Cs pairs.

A global deperturbation analysis of the observed levels, considering a model, which is complete within the subspace of relevant neighboring states, is performed using the Fourier Grid Hamiltonian method. We determine the potential energy curve of the A^{1}Σ_{u}^{+} and c^{3}Π_{u} states and the strengths of the couplings between them. The c^{3}Π_{u} and \as states are of particular importance for the description of collisional processes between calcium atoms in the ground state ^{1}S_{0} and excited state ^{3}P_{1} applied in studies for establishing an optical frequency standard with Ca.

We investigate the influence of a laser field, which is near-resonant to the atomic sodium 3$^2$P$_{1/2}$ $\to$ 3$^2$D$_{3/2}$ transition, on the last bound levels of the A$^1Σ^+_u$ state in Na$_2$. In a molecular beam experiment level shifts up to $\approx$ 100 MHz and light induced line broadenings were observed using an optical double resonance excitation scheme. Moreover, the coupling laser can reduce the number of bound levels of the A state by one or more units, which effectively means that in the picture of a collision of a 3$^2$S$_{1/2}$ and a 3$^2$P$_{1/2}$-atom the scattering phase is altered by more than $π$. The observed effects are interpreted as light induced couplings of the A$^1Σ^+_u$ state, which correlates to the 3s$_{1/2}$+3p$_{1/2}$ asymptote, to the $4^1Σ^+_g$ and $2^1Π_g$ states at the 3s$_{1/2}$+3d$_{3/2}$ asymptote. We performed multi-channel calculations, applying the mapped Fourier grid method, which reproduce our experimentally observed level shifts well.

In contrast to previous measurements the rotational splitting of the vibrational lines was fully resolved. Full quantum mechanical numerical simulations of the photoassociation spectrum were performed which allowed us to put constraints on the possible range of the calcium scattering length to between 50 a_0 and 300 a_0.

The filtered laser excitation technique was applied for measuring transition frequencies of the Ca$_2$ B-X system from asymptotic levels of the X$^1Σ_{\mathrm g}^{+}$ ground state reaching $v''=38$. That level has an outer classical turning point of about 20~Åwhich is only 0.2 \rcm below the molecular $^1$S$+^1$S asymptote. Extensive analysis of the spectroscopic data, involving Monte Carlo simulation, allowed for a purely experimental determination of the long range parameters of the potential energy curve. The possible values of the s-wave scattering length could be limited to be between 250$a_0$ and 1000$a_0$.
