We present a theoretical study of the interaction between an atom characterized by a degenerate ground state and a reciprocal environment, such as a semiconductor nanoparticle, without the presence of external bias. Our analysis reveals that the combined influence of the electron's intrinsic spin magnetic moment on the environment and the chiral atomic dipolar transitions may lead to either the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry or the emergence of time-crystal-like states with remarkably long relaxation times. The different behavior is ruled by the handedness of the precession motion of the atom's spin vector, which is induced by virtual chiral-dipolar transitions. Specifically, when the relative orientation of the precession angular velocity and the electron spin vector is as in a spinning top, the system manifests time-crystal-like states. Conversely, with the opposite relative orientation, the system experiences spontaneous symmetry breaking of time-reversal symmetry. Our findings introduce a novel mechanism for the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry in atomic systems, and unveil an exciting opportunity to engineer a nonreciprocal response at the nanoscale, exclusively driven by the quantum vacuum fluctuations.

First, we consider the case of a linear relation between the applied gate voltage and local density in the channel and, secondly, we investigate the effect of non-local Coulomb interactions. We obtain two distinct edge modes for each interaction type: a Yanai mode with rotational flow and dispersion relation that extends to infinite wave-number, and a Kelvin mode with purely longitudinal flow and bound dispersion relation. The scattering matrix concept is applied to verify the infinite frequency regime of the spectrum, and the bulk-edge correspondence principle is satisfied if one takes into account the Kelvin modes that merge with an imaginary cut of the bulk band.

We investigate the electron-hole two-stream instability (or Coulomb drag) in intrinsic bilayer graphene in the hydrodynamic regime, accounting for the effects of temperature, initial drift velocity, magnetic field, and collisions. The threshold drift speed for the onset of instabilities is of the order of the thermal velocity of the carriers. We put in evidence an unprecedented purely electrostatic mechanism leading to current relaxation, giving rise to a well-defined dc longitudinal conductivity $\propto T^{3/2}$. Due to competition between electrostatic and collisional processes, two distinct transport regimes are identified. An analysis on the Hall conductivity revealed that the two-stream instability effects also correct the most recent results obtained within the linear response theory.

The nonzero chemical potential is provided by the electrons, which induces a finite photon mass allowing condensation to occur. We derive an equation that models the evolution of the photon-mode occupancies, with Compton scattering taken into account as the mechanism of thermalization. The kinetic evolution of the photon spectrum is solved numerically, and we find evidences of condensation for realistic plasma densities, $n_e\sim 10^{14} - 10^{15}\; \text{cm}^{-3}$, compatible with microplasma technology. The critical temperature is almost linear in the number of photons, and we find high condensate fractions at microcavity-plasma temperatures, for experimentally reasonable cavity lengths ($ 100-500 \; μ$m) and photon numbers ($10^{10}-10^{12}$).

Neutrinos in the ultra-low energy range ($\mathcal{E}<1.0~\rm{eV}$) have been theoretically predicted but their observation remain elusive, and no concrete experimental scheme has been proposed for that job. Here, we propose a novel scheme based on graphene plasmonic metamaterials to designed to detect ultra-low energetic neutrinos. We claim that slow neutrino fluxes, interacting with solid-state plasmas, can generate an instability due to the weak neutrino-plasmon interaction, which is reminiscent of the beam-plasma instability taking place in astrophysics and laboratory plasmas. We make use of the semi-classical limit of the weak interaction to describe the coupling between the neutrinos and electrons in graphene. To render the scheme practical, we investigate the neutrino-plasma instability produced in a graphene metamaterial, composed by a periodic stacking of graphene layers. Our findings reveal that the controlled excitation of plasma waves in such graphene metamaterial allows for the detection of neutrinos in the energy range $\sim 1.0~\rm{μeV}-100~\rm{meV}$, and fluxes in the range $10^{4}-10^{10} \rm{cm^{-2} s^{-1}}$.

This hydrodynamic behaviour of charge carriers leads to exciting nonlinear phenomena such as solitary waves and shocks, among others. In this paper we dwell over the study of the boundary layer problem in a hydrodynamical description of the electrons in gated graphene. It has been verified experimentally that this fluid can display non-Poiseuille like flow as reproduced in our numerical simulation. In fact, the velocity profile displays a maximum value close to the boundary and then decreases as it approaches the bulk of the graphene layer. This work aims to present a satisfactory theoretical description of the boundary layer problem in graphene. We found that by using the fluid equations and following a method similar to that for deriving Blasius' equation, a non-linear model can be obtained whose solutions display the maximum values of velocity near the edges of the graphene layer. We argue that such a non-monotonic model and behaviour can shed some light on the subject of non-topological edge currents in graphene.

Several hydrodynamic descriptions of charge transport in graphene have been presented in the late years. We discuss a general hydrodynamic model governing the dynamics of a two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetized field-effect transistor in the slow drift regime. The Dyakonov--Shur instability is investigated including the effect of weak magnetic fields (i.e. away from Landau levels). We show that the gap on the dispersion relation prevents the instability to reach the lower frequencies thus imposing a limit on the Mach number of the electronic flow. Furthermore, we discuss that the presence of the external magnetic field decreases the growth rate of the instability, as well as the saturation amplitude. The numerical results from our simulations and the presented higher order dynamic mode decomposition support such reasoning.

We derive a quantum kinetic model describing the dynamics of graphene electrons in phase space based on the Wigner--Weyl formalism. To take into account the quantum nature of the carriers, we make use of the quantum Liouville equation for the density matrix. By relating the density matrix elements with the Wigner function, the equation of motion for the latter is established, with the Coulomb interaction being introduced self-consistently (i.e., in the Hartree approximation). The long-wavelength limit for the plasmon dispersion relation is obtained, for both ungated and gated situations. As an application, we derive the corresponding fluid equations from first principles and discuss the correct value of the effective hydrodynamic mass of the carriers. This constitutes a crucial point in establishing the appropriate fluid description of Dirac electrons, thus paving the way to a more comprehensive description of graphene plasmonics.

Strong turbulence in quasi-one dimensional spuerfluids, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, involves the dynamics of dark solitons and, therefore, the description of a statistical ensemble of dark-solitons, i.e. soliton gases, is necessary. In this work, we propose a phase-space (kinetic) description of dark-soliton gases, introducing a kinetic equation that is formally similar to the Vlasov equation in plasma physics. We show that the proposed kinetic theory can capture the dynamical features of soliton gases and show that it sustains an acoustic mode, a fact that we corroborate with the help of direct numerical simulations. Our findings motivate the investigation of the microscopic structure of out-of-equilibrium and turbulent regimes in low-dimensional superfluids.

Electrically injected terahertz (THz) radiation sources are extremely appealing given their versatility and miniaturization potential, opening the venue for integrated-circuit THz technology. In this work, we show that coherent THz frequency combs in the range $0.5~\mathrm{THz}<ω/2π<10~\mathrm{THz}$ can be generated making use of graphene plasmonics. Our setup consists of a graphene field-effect transistor with asymmetric boundary conditions, with the radiation originating from a plasmonic instability that can be controlled by direct current injection. We put forward a combined analytical and numerical analysis of the graphene plasma hydrodynamics, showing that the instability can be experimentally controlled by the applied gate voltage and the injected current. Our calculations indicate that the emitted THz comb exhibits appreciable temporal coherence ($g^{(1)}(τ)>0.6$) and radiant emittance ($10^{7}\,\mathrm{Wm^{-2}}$). This makes our scheme an appealing candidate for a graphene-base THz laser source. Moreover, a mechanism for the instability amplification is advanced for the case of substrates with varying electric permitivitty, which allows to overcome eventual limitations associated with the experimental implementation.

In this work, we exploit the axion-plasmon hybridization to actively produce axions in streaming magnetized plasmas. We show that, if we make the plasma unstable via the injection of an energetic electron beam (beam-plasma instability), an appreciable production rate of few axions per minute can be achieved. The produced axions can then be detected by Primakoff decay into photons.

We perform first principles numerical simulations on the dynamics of such systems. The emergence of a roton minimum in the excitation spectrum, as expected in strongly correlated gases and accurately described by Feynman's theory of liquid helium, is shown to significantly inhibit particle transport, with a strong suppression of the diffusion coefficient, due to the emerging spatial order. We also demonstrate how the ability to temporally tune the interaction strength among Rydberg atoms can be used in order to overcome the effects of disorder induced heating, allowing the study of unprecedented highly coupled regimes.

Turbulence in the quantum (superfluid) regime, similarly to its classical counterpart, continues to attract a great deal of scientific inquiry, due to the yet high number of unresolved problems. While turbulent states can be routinely created in degenerate atomic gases, there is no generic scheme to produce turbulence in fluids of light. Under paraxial propagation, light in bulk nonlinear media behaves as a two-dimensional superfluid, described by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation formally equivalent to the Gross-Pitaevskii model of a weakly interacting Bose gas, where photon-photon interactions are mediated by a third order (Kerr) nonlinearity. Here, we develop the theory describing the onset of a kinetic instability when two paraxial optical fluids with different streaming velocities interact via the optical nonlinearity. From numerical simulations of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we further characterize the onset of the instability and describe its saturation in the form of vortex nucleation and excitation of turbulence. The experimental observation of such effects is also discussed. The class of instabilities described here thus provide a natural route towards the investigation of quantum (superfluid) turbulence, structure formation and out-of-equilibrium dynamics in superfluids of light.

Axions are hypothetical particles related to the violation of the charge-parity symmetry, being the most prone candidates for dark matter. Multiple attempts to prove their existence are currently performed in different physical systems. Here, we anticipate the possibility of the axions coupling to the electrostatic (Langmuir) modes of a strongly magnetized plasma, by showing that a new quasi-particle can be defined, the axion-plasmon polariton. The excitation of axions can be inferred from the pronounced modification of the dispersion relation of the Langmuir waves, a feature that we estimate to be accessible in state-of-the-art plasma-based experiments. We further show that, under extreme density and magnetic field conditions (e.g. at the interior of dense neutron stars), the axion-plasmon polariton becomes dynamically unstable, similarly to the case of the Jeans instability occurring in self-gravitating fluids. This latter result anticipates a plausible mechanism to the creation of axion-like particles in the universe.

We study the Bose-Einstein condensation of photons in a plasma, where we include the cases of both transverse photons and plasmons. We consider four-wave mixing processes of photon and plasmon modes in a relativistic isotropic plasma to determine the coupling constant to lowest order. We further show that photon condensation is possible in an unbounded plasma because, in contrast with other optical media, plasmas introduce an effective photon mass. This guarantees the existence of a finite chemical potential and a critical temperature, which is calculated for both transverse photons and plasmons. By considering four-wave mixing processes, we derive the interactions between the photons in the condensate. We also study the elementary excitations (or Bogoliubov modes) of the condensed photon and plasmon gases, and determine the respective dispersion relations. Finally, we discuss the kinetics of photon condensation via inverse Compton scattering between the photons and the electrons in the plasma.

One of the most fundamental properties of electromagnetism and special relativity is the coupling between the spin of an electron and its orbital motion. This is at the origin of the fine structure in atoms, the spin Hall effect in semiconductors, and underlies many intriguing properties of topological insulators, in particular their chiral edge states. Configurations where neutral particles experience an effective spin-orbit coupling have been recently proposed and realized using ultracold atoms and photons. Here we use coupled micropillars etched out of a semiconductor microcavity to engineer a spin-orbit Hamiltonian for photons and polaritons in a microstructure. The coupling between the spin and orbital momentum arises from the polarisation dependent confinement and tunnelling of photons between micropillars arranged in the form of a hexagonal photonic molecule. Dramatic consequences of the spin-orbit coupling are experimentally observed in these structures in the wavefunction of polariton condensates, whose helical shape is directly visible in the spatially resolved polarisation patterns of the emitted light. The strong optical nonlinearity of polariton systems suggests exciting perspectives for using quantum fluids of polaritons11 for quantum simulation of the interplay between interactions and spin-orbit coupling.

As a result, particles become massive, but no gap opens. The emergent field symmetry is revealed by the optical spin Hall effect.

Abstract:
We study the spectrum of density fluctuations in the ultra-cold gas of neutral atoms, confined in a magneto-optical trap. We determine the corresponding amplitude and spectra of laser light scattered by this medium. We derive an expression for the dynamical structure function, by using a test particle method. We propose to use the collective laser scattering as a diagnostic method for the microsco…

We study the spectrum of density fluctuations in the ultra-cold gas of neutral atoms, confined in a magneto-optical trap. We determine the corresponding amplitude and spectra of laser light scattered by this medium. We derive an expression for the dynamical structure function, by using a test particle method. We propose to use the collective laser scattering as a diagnostic method for the microscopic properties of the ultra-cold matter. This will also allow us to check on the atomic correlations which are mediated by the collective mean field inside the gas.

Abstract:
The dispersion relation for the electrostatic waves below the electron plasma frequency in a dense quantum plasma is derived by using the magnetohydrodynamic model. It is shown that in the classical case the dispersion relation reduces to the expression obtained for the well-known Trivelpiece-Gould (TG) modes. Attention is also devoted to the case of solitary waves associated with the nonlinear…
