The tubulin-like protein FtsZ is crucial for cytokinesis in bacteria and many archaea, forming a ring-shaped structure called the Z-ring at the site of cell division. Despite extensive research, the formation of Z-rings is not entirely understood. We propose a theoretical model based on FtsZ's known filament structures, treating them as semiflexible polymers with specific mechanical properties and lateral inter-segment attraction that can stabilize ring formations. Our Langevin dynamics simulations reveal various morphological phases, including open helices, chains, rings, and globules, capturing experimental observations in the fission yeast model using FtsZ from different bacterial species or mutants of Escherichia coli. Using the theoretical model, we explore how treadmilling activity affects Z-ring stability and identify a spooling mechanism of ring formation. The active ring produces contractile, shear, and rotational stresses, which intensify before the Z-ring transitions to an open helix at high activity.

Spatio-temporal evolution of large amplitude upper hybrid oscillations in a cold homogeneous plasma in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field is studied analytically and numerically using the Dawson sheet model. It is observed that the inhomogeneity in magnetic field which causes the upper hybrid frequency to acquire a spatial dependence, results in phase mixing and subsequent breaking of the upper hybrid oscillations at arbitrarily low amplitudes. This result is in sharp contrast to the usual upper hybrid oscillations in a homogeneous magnetic field where the oscillations break within a fraction of a period when the amplitude exceeds a certain critical value. Our perturbative calculations show that the phase mixing (wave breaking) time scales inversely with the amplitude of magnetic field inhomogeneity ($Δ$) and amplitude of imposed density perturbation ($δ$), and scales directly with the ratio of magnetic field inhomogeneity scale length to imposed density perturbation scale length ($(α/k_L)^{-1}$ ) as $ω_{pe}τ_{mix} \sim \left( 1+β^2 \right) ^{3/2}k_L/(β^2δΔα)$, where $β$ is the ratio of electron cyclotron frequency to electron plasma frequency. Further phase mixing time measured in simulations, performed using a 1-1/2 D code based on Dawson sheet model, shows good agreement with the above mentioned scaling. This result may be of relevance to plasma based particle acceleration experiments in the presence of a transverse inhomogeneous magnetic field.

This paper describes the development of a photonic local oscillator (LO) source based on a 3-stage Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) device. The MZM laser synthesizer demonstrates the feasibility of providing the photonic reference LO for the Atacama Large Millimeter Array telescope located in Chile. This MZM approach to generating an LO by radio RF modulation of a monochromatic optical source provides the merits of wide frequency coverage of 4-130 GHz, tuning speed of about 0.2 seconds, and residual integrated phase noise performance of 0.3 degrees RMS at 100 GHz.

Abstract:
The time varying currents in the Ohmic transformer in the SST-1 tokamak induce voltages that drive large eddy currents in the passive structures like the vacuum vessel and cryostat. Since the vacuum vessel and the cryostat are toroidally continuous without electrical breaks in SST- 1, this leads to a shielding effect on the flux penetrating the vacuum vessel. This reduces the magnitude of the loop voltage seen by the plasma as also delays its buildup. Also the induced currents alter the null location of magnetic field. This will have serious implications on the plasma breakdown and startup and corrective measures may be required in case of an insufficient loop voltage or an improper null. Further, the eddy currents distribution will be vital for the plasma equilibrium and need to be considered while reconstructing the equilibrium. Evolution of the toroidal eddy currents in SST-1 passive structures has been studied using a toroidal-filament model. The model calculations are compared with the measured signals in the magnetic diagnostics like the toroidal flux loops and magnetic pick-up coils installed on the SST-1.

Transmission of He-Ne (632 nm, 10 mW) Gaussian laser beam through Hexane and Water based magnetic nanofluids containing Fe3O4 nanoparticles show strong non-linear and magneto-optical effects. Application of external magnetic field (up to 1.7 Wb/m2) perpendicular to the incident laser beam produces a change in forward scattered pattern of the incident laser beam. Dependence of forward scattered patterns in presence of external magnetic field has been studied. Image processing has been carried out to understand spatial distribution of the forward scattered patterns and temporal evolution of patterns involving particle image velocimetry technique. Change in non-linear refractive index is estimated for samples showing self-diffraction arising from higher order non-linear optical effect. Observed effects are useful for understanding light scattering from magnetic nanofluids and develo** optofluidic devices and sensors.

An invariant in shock clustering and Burgers turbulence
Authors:

Abstract:
1-D scalar conservation laws with convex flux and Markov initial data are now known to yield a completely integrable Hamiltonian system. In this article, we rederive the analogue of Loitsiansky's invariant in hydrodynamic turbulence from the perspective of integrable systems. Other relevant physical notions such as energy dissipation and spectrum are also discussed.
