A unified theoretical approach to describe the properties of multimode squeezed light generated in a lossy medium is presented. This approach is valid for Markovian environments and includes both a model of discrete losses based on the beamsplitter approach and a generalized continuous loss model based on the spatial Langevin equation. For an important class of Gaussian states, we derive master equations for the second-order correlation functions and illustrate their solution for both frequency-independent and frequency-dependent losses. Studying the mode structure, we demonstrate that in a lossy environment no broadband basis without quadrature correlations between the different broadband modes exists. Therefore, various techniques and strategies to introduce broadband modes can be considered. We show that the Mercer expansion and the Williamson decomposition do not provide modes in which the maximal squeezing contained in the system can be measured. In turn, we find a new broadband basis that maximizes squeezing in the lossy system and present an algorithm to construct it.

Multimode integrated interferometers have great potential for both spectral engineering and metrological applications. However, material dispersion of integrated platforms constitutes an obstacle which limits the performance and precision of such interferometers. At the same time, two-colour non-linear interferometers present an important tool for metrological applications, when measurements in a certain frequency range are difficult. In this manuscript, we theoretically develop and investigate an integrated multimode two-colour SU(1,1) interferometer that operates in a supersensitive mode. By ensuring a proper design of the integrated platform, we suppress dispersion and thereby significantly increase the visibility of the interference pattern. We demonstrate that such an interferometer overcomes the classical phase sensitivity limit for wide parametric gain ranges, when up to $3*10^4$ photons are generated.

Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) has a great potential for photonic integrated circuits, providing substantial versatility in design of various integrated components. To properly use these components in the implementation of different quantum protocols, photons with different properties are required. In this paper, we theoretically demonstrate a flexible source of correlated photons built on the LNOI waveguide of a special geometry. This source is based on the parametric down-conversion (PDC) process, in which the signal and idler photons are generated at the telecom wavelength and have different spatial profiles and polarizations, but the same group velocities. Such features facilitate electro-optical manipulations with photons and, at the same time, do not require an additional compensation for the time delay. We show how the spectral properties of the generated photons and the number of their frequency modes can be controlled depending on the pump characteristics and the waveguide length. Finally, we discuss a special regime, in which narrowband light with strong frequency correlations is generated at the telecom wavelength.

Interferometers provide a highly sensitive means to investigate and exploit the coherence properties of light in metrology applications. However, interferometers come in various forms and exploit different properties of the optical states within. In this paper, we introduce a classification scheme that characterizes any interferometer based on the number of involved nonlinear elements by studying their influence on single-photon and photon-pair states. Several examples of specific interferometers from these more general classes are discussed, and the theory describing the expected first-order and second-order coherence measurements for single-photon and single-photon-pair input states is summarized and compared. These theoretical predictions are then tested in an innovative experimental setup that is easily able to switch between implementing an interferometer consisting of only one or two nonlinear elements. The resulting singles and coincidence rates are measured in both configurations and the results are seen to fit well with the presented theory. The measured results of coherence are tied back to the presented classification scheme, revealing that our experimental design can be useful in gaining insight into the properties of the various interferometeric setups containing different degrees of nonlinearity.

Uniaxial anisotropy in nonlinear birefringent crystals limits the efficiency of nonlinear optical interactions and breaks the spatial symmetry of light generated in the parametric down-conversion (PDC) process. Therefore, this effect is usually undesirable and must be compensated for. However, high gain may be used to overcome the destructive role of anisotropy and instead to use it for the generation of bright two-mode correlated twin-beams. In this work, we provide a rigorous theoretical description of the spatial properties of bright squeezed light in the presence of strong anisotropy. We investigate a single-crystal and a two-crystal configuration and demonstrate the generation of bright correlated twin-beams in such systems at high gain due to anisotropy. We explore the mode structure of the generated light and show how anisotropy, together with crystal spacing, can be used for radiation sha**.

Nonlinear SU(1,1) interferometers are fruitful and promising tools for spectral engineering and precise measurements with phase sensitivity below the classical bound. Such interferometers have been successfully realized in bulk and fiber-based configurations. However, rapidly develo** integrated technologies provide higher efficiencies, smaller footprints, and pave the way to quantum-enhanced on-chip interferometry. In this work, we theoretically realised an integrated architecture of the multimode SU(1,1) interferometer which can be applied to various integrated platforms. The presented interferometer includes a polarization converter between two photon sources and utilizes a continuous-wave (CW) pump. Based on the potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) platform, we show that this configuration results in almost perfect destructive interference at the output and supersensitivity regions below the classical limit. In addition, we discuss the fundamental difference between single-mode and highly multimode SU(1,1) interferometers in the properties of phase sensitivity and its limits. Finally, we explore how to improve the phase sensitivity by filtering the output radiation and using different seeding states in different modes with various detection strategies.

The phenomenon of entanglement is the basis of quantum information and quantum communication processes. Entangled systems with a large number of photons are of great interest at present because they provide a platform for streaming technologies based on photonics. In this paper we present a device which operates with four-photons and based on the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference. The presented device allows to maximize the degree of spatial entanglement and generate the highly entangled four-dimensional Bell states. Furthermore, the use of the interferometer in different regimes leads to fast interference fringes in the coincidence probability with period of oscillations twice smaller than the pump wavelength. We have a good agreement between theoretical simulations and experimental results.

The two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference is a pure quantum effect which indicates the degree of indistinguishability of photons. The four-photon HOM interference exhibits richer dynamics in comparison to the two-photon interference and simultaneously is more sensitive to the input photon states. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally an explicit dependency of the four-photon interference to the number of temporal modes, created in the process of parametric down-conversion. Moreover, we exploit the splitting ratio of the beam splitter to manipulate the interference between bunching and antibunching. Our results reveal that the temporal mode structure (multimodeness) of the quantum states shapes many-particle interference.

Future quantum computation and networks require scalable monolithic circuits, which incorporate various advanced functionalities on a single physical substrate. Although substantial progress for various applications has already been demonstrated on different platforms, the range of diversified manipulation of photonic states on demand on a single chip has remained limited, especially dynamic time management. Here, we demonstrate an electro-optic device, including photon pair generation, propagation, electro-optical path routing, as well as a voltage-controllable time delay of up to ~ 12 ps on a single Ti:LIbO3 waveguide chip. As an example, we demonstrate Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with a visibility of more than 93$\pm$ 1.8\%. Our chip not only enables the deliberate manipulation of photonic states by rotating the polarization but also provides precise time control. Our experiment reveals that we have full flexible control over single-qubit operations by harnessing the complete potential of fast on-chip electro-optic modulation.

We suggest a novel optical parametric generator (OPG) in which one of the down-converted beams is spontaneously generated along the Poynting vector of the pump beam. In this configuration, the generation takes advantage of the walk-off of the extraordinary pump rather than being degraded by it. As a result the generated beams, signal and idler, are bright, due to a high conversion efficiency, spatially nearly single-mode, due to the preferred direction of the Poynting vector, tuneable over a wide range of wavelengths, and broadband. The two beams are also correlated in frequency and in the photon number per pulse. Furthermore due to their thermal statistics these beams can be used as a pump to efficiently generate other nonlinear processes.

Walk-off effects, originating from the difference between the group and phase velocities, limit the efficiency of nonlinear optical interactions. While transverse walk-off can be eliminated by proper medium engineering, longitudinal walk-off is harder to avoid. In particular, ultrafast twin- beam generation via pulsed parametric down-conversion (PDC) and four-wave mixing (FWM) is only possible in short crystals or fibres or in double-path schemes. Here we show that in high-gain PDC, one can overcome the destructive role of both effects and even turn them into useful tools for sha** the emission. In our experiment, one of the twin beams is emitted along the pump Poynting vector or its group velocity matches that of the pump. The result is dramatically enhanced generation of both twin beams, with the simultaneous narrowing of angular and frequency spectrum. The effect will enable efficient generation of ultrafast twin photons and beams in cavities, waveguides, and whispering-gallery mode resonators.
