Thanu Padmanabhan was a renowned Indian theoretical physicist known for his research in general relativity, cosmology, and quantum gravity. In an extraordinary career spanning forty-two years, he published more than three hundred research articles, wrote ten highly successful technical and popular books, and mentored nearly thirty graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. He is best known for his deep work investigating gravitation as an emergent thermodynamic phenomenon. He was an outstanding teacher, and an indefatigable populariser of science, who travelled very widely to motivate and inspire young students. Paddy, as he was affectionately known, was also a close friend to his students and collaborators, treating them as part of his extended academic family. On September 17, 2021 Paddy passed away very unexpectedly, at the age of sixty-four and at the height of his research career, while serving as a Distinguished Professor at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune. His untimely demise has come as a shock to his family and friends and colleagues. In this article, several of them have come together to pay their tributes and share their fond memories of Paddy.

Abstract:
We consider a spherically symmetric stellar configuration with a density profile $ρ(r)=\frac{c^2}{8πG r^2} $. This configuration satisfies the Schwarzchild black hole condition $\frac {2GM}{c^2 R}=~1$ for every $ r =R $. We refer it as "Planckonion". The interesting thing about the Plankonion is that it has an onion like structure. The central sphere with radius of the Plank-lenght…

The central sphere with radius of the Plank-lenght $ L_p=\sqrt{(\frac {2\hbar G}{c^3})}$ has one unit of the Planck-mass $M_p=\sqrt {(\frac {c\hbar}{2G})}$. Subsequent spherical shells of radial width $L_p$ contain exactly one unit of $M_p$. We study this stellar configuration using Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation and show that the equation is satisfied if pressure $P(r)=-ρ(r)$. On the geometrical side, the space component of the metric blows up at every point. The time component of the metric is zero inside the star but only in the sense of a distribution (generalized function). The Planckonions mimic some features of black holes but avoid appearance of central singularity because of the violation of null energy conditions.

Why is Universe so dark ?

In this presentation prepared for a general audience, we briefly mention the shortcomings of standard model of universe. We then focus on the late time inconsistency of the model dubbed age crisis whose resolution requires the presence of a repulsive effect that could be sourced either by dark energy or by a large scale modification of gravity. By and large, our description is based upon Newtonian cosmology which is simple and elegant despite of its limitations. On heuristic grounds, we explain how a tiny mass of graviton could account for late time cosmic acceleration. We also include a brief discussion on the underlying physics of Type Ia supernovae explosion and the direct confirmation of late time acceleration of Universe by the related observations.
