The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived feedstocks into value-added chemicals with high efficiency and selectivity is desirable for the utilization of biomass resource. The complex oxygen-containing groups of lignin-derived substance result in the challenge of the low selectivity toward the required product. In this work, highly dispersed Ru nanoparticles anchored on Ni3Al1 layered double oxides (LDOs) catalyst derived from NiAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with flower-shaped morphology was constructed by a simple deposition-reduction method. The introduction of LDHs-derived support can significantly impact the catalytic activity for the HDO of lignin-derived vanillin (VL) into 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP). The Ru/Ni3Al1-400 catalyst obtained complete conversion of VL and 94.2% yield of MMP at 130 °C in methanol solvent, much better than the catalysts without LDHs-derived support. The methanol solvent is beneficial for the conversion of reaction intermediate of vanillin alcohol (VA). Detailed characterization reveals that the existence of the enhanced metal-support interaction over Ru/Ni3Al1-400 and the easily accessible acid sites facilitate the production of MMP.

A multi-parameter analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of meteorological parameters, night sky brightness and seismic hazard on proposed sites for the new optical/infrared Egyptian astronomical telescope. The ERA5 reanalysis data set is used to get the following meteorological parameters: Total cloud coverage fraction, precipitable water vapor, relative humidity, wind speed & direction and Air temperature. To estimate the aerosol optical depth we used the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2). Light pollution over the candidate sites was measured from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day Night Band (DNB). The seismic input in terms of maximum acceleration and response spectra were computed using a physics-based ground motion approach to assess the seismic hazards and consequently the designation of seismic resistant structure for the proposed sites to be able to assess the seismic hazards for the candidate sites. Of the seven nominated sites, two sites are found to have the best measurements and might be considered future sites for the new Egyptian Astronomical telescope. The first site is located in the south of the Sinai peninsula, while the second one is located in the Red Sea mountains region.

Biomechanical modelling of soft tissue provides a non-data-driven method for constraining medical image registration, such that the estimated spatial transformation is considered biophysically plausible. This has not only been adopted in real-world clinical applications, such as the MR-to-ultrasound registration for prostate intervention of interest in this work, but also provides an explainable means of understanding the organ motion and spatial correspondence establishment. This work instantiates the recently-proposed physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to a 3D linear elastic model for modelling prostate motion commonly encountered during transrectal ultrasound guided procedures. To overcome a widely-recognised challenge in generalising PINNs to different subjects, we propose to use PointNet as the nodal-permutation-invariant feature extractor, together with a registration algorithm that aligns point sets and simultaneously takes into account the PINN-imposed biomechanics. The proposed method has been both developed and validated in both patient-specific and multi-patient manner.

Neutronics calculations have been performed of the MYRRHA ADS Reactor with a thorium-based fuel mixture, using the simulation programs MCNPX (Waters, 2002) and Geant4 (Agostinelli, 2003). Thorium is often considered for ADS systems, and this is the first evaluation of the possibilities for thorium based fuels using a reactor design which has been developed in detail. It also extends the application of the widely-used Geant4 program to the geometry of MYRRHA and to thorium. An asymptotic 232Th/233U mixture is considered, together with the standard MOX fuel and a possible 232Th/MOX starter. Neutron fluxes and spectra are calculated at several regions in the core: fuel cells, IPS cells and the two (Mo and Ac) isotope production cells. These are then used for simple calculations of the fuel evolution and of the potential for the incineration of minor actinide waste. Results from the two programs agree and support each other and show that the thorium fuel is viable, and has good evolution/breeding properties, and that minor actinide incineration, though it will not take place on a significant scale, will be demonstrable.

Laser Doppler holography (LDH) is a full-field blood flow imaging technique able to reveal human retinal and choroidal blood flow with high temporal resolution. We here report on using LDH in the anterior segment of the eye without making changes to the instrument. Blood flow in the bulbar conjunctiva and episclera as well as in corneal neovascularization can be effectively imaged. We additionally demonstrate simultaneous holographic imaging of the anterior and posterior segments by simply adapting the numerical propagation distance to the plane of interest. We used this feature to track the movements of the retina and pupil with high temporal resolution. Finally, we show that the light backscattered by the retina can be used for retro-illumination of the anterior segment. Hence digital holography can reveal opacities caused by absorption or diffusion in the cornea and eye lens.

We propose a new technique of utilizing metamaterials-based sensor for rapid diagnosis of covid-19 through electromagnetic-stimulated analysis of the blood drawn from the patient. The sensor was inspired by a coronavirus in plane-shaped design with presume that its circular structure might produce a broader interaction of the electromagnetic waves with the blood sample. The sensor was designed numerically and tested experimentally by evaluating variations in the reflection coefficient (S11) and transmission coefficient (S21) of the waves at resonant frequency. Results of covid-19 relevant blood sample showed a pronounced shift in the main resonant frequency of about 740 MHz compared to that of the control blood sample. We believe that with the help of the proposed sensor a significant breakthrough can be achieved for rapid diagnosis of covid-19 within few seconds.

Management of vestibular schwannoma (VS) is based on tumour size as observed on T1 MRI scans with contrast agent injection. Current clinical practice is to measure the diameter of the tumour in its largest dimension. It has been shown that volumetric measurement is more accurate and more reliable as a measure of VS size. The reference approach to achieve such volumetry is to manually segment the tumour, which is a time intensive task. We suggest that semi-automated segmentation may be a clinically applicable solution to this problem and that it could replace linear measurements as the clinical standard. Using high-quality software available for academic purposes, we ran a comparative study of manual versus semi-automated segmentation of VS on MRI with 5 clinicians and scientists. We gathered both quantitative and qualitative data to compare the two approaches; including segmentation time, segmentation effort and segmentation accuracy. We found that the selected semi-automated segmentation approach is significantly faster (167s versus 479s, p<0.001), less temporally and physically demanding and has approximately equal performance when compared with manual segmentation, with some improvements in accuracy. There were some limitations, including algorithmic unpredictability and error, which produced more frustration and increased mental effort in comparison to manual segmentation. We suggest that semi-automated segmentation could be applied clinically for volumetric measurement of VS on MRI. In future, the generic software could be refined for use specifically for VS segmentation, thereby improving accuracy.

This paper attempts to design an intelligent simulation model for pedestrian crowd evacuation. For this purpose, the cellular automata(CA) was fully integrated with fuzzy logic, the kth nearest neighbors (KNN), and some statistical equations. In this model, each pedestrian was assigned a specific speed, according to his/her physical, biological and emotional features. The emergency behavior and evacuation efficiency of each pedestrian were evaluated by coupling his or her speed with various elements, such as environment, pedestrian distribution and familiarity with the exits. These elements all have great impacts on the evacuation process. Several experiments were carried out to verify the performance of the model in different emergency scenarios. The results show that the proposed model can predict the evacuation time and emergency behavior in various types of building interiors and pedestrian distributions. The research provides a good reference to the design of building evacuation systems.

Human beings face threats because of unexpected happenings, which can be avoided through an adequate crisis evacuation plan, which is vital to stop wound and demise as its negative results. Consequently, different typical evacuation pedestrians have been created. Moreover, through applied research, these models for various applications, reproductions, and conditions have been examined to present an operational model. Furthermore, new models have been developed to cooperate with system evacuation in residential places in case of unexpected events. This research has taken into account an inclusive and a 'systematic survey of pedestrian evacuation' to demonstrate models methods by focusing on the applications' features, techniques, implications, and after that gather them under various types, for example, classical models, hybridized models, and generic model. The current analysis assists scholars in this field of study to write their forthcoming papers about it, which can suggest a novel structure to recent typical intelligent reproduction with novel features.
