The Photon Hall Pinwheel, Radiation of Angular Momentum by a Diffusing Magneto-optical Medium
Abstract: We consider an optically thick spherical agglomerate of magneto-optical scatterers with a central isotropic, unpolarized light source, placed in a homogeneous magnetic field. The Photon Hall Effect induces a rotating Poynting vector, both inside and outside the medium. We show that electromagnetic (orbital) angular momentum leaks out and induces a torque proportional to the injection power of the… ▽ More

High magnetic fields for fundamental physics
Abstract: Various fundamental-physics experiments such as measurement of the birefringence of the vacuum, searches for ultralight dark matter (e.g., axions), and precision spectroscopy of complex systems (including exotic atoms containing antimatter constituents) are enabled by high-field magnets. We give an overview of current and future experiments and discuss the state-of-the-art DC- and pulsed-magnet te… ▽ More

A 31T split-pair pulsed magnet for single crystal x-ray diffraction at low temperature
Abstract: We have developed a pulsed magnet system with panoramic access for synchrotron x-ray diffraction in magnetic fields up to 31T and at low temperature down to 1.5 K. The apparatus consists of a split-pair magnet, a liquid nitrogen bath to cool the pulsed coil, and a helium cryostat allowing sample temperatures from 1.5 up to 250 K. Using a 1.15MJ mobile generator, magnetic field pulses of 60 ms leng… ▽ More

A single-oscillator quantum model for magnetochiral birefringence
Abstract: We derive an analytical expression for the magnetochiral birefringence of a dilute diamagnetic chiral molecular medium subjet to a constant magnetic field. We use the single-oscillator model of Condon et al. [1, 2] to describe the optical properties of the individual molecules. The result is a function of the refractive index and the rotatory power. This result is compared to experimental data.

Casimir Momentum of a Chiral Molecule in a Magnetic Field
Abstract: In a classical description, a neutral, polarizable object acquires a kinetic momentum when exposed to crossed electric and magnetic fields. In the presence of only a magnetic field no such momentum exists classically, although it is symmetry-allowed for an object lacking mirror symmetry. We perform a full QED calculation to show that the quantum vacuum coupled to a chiral molecule provides a kinet… ▽ More

Negative experimental evidence for magneto-orbital dichroism - supplemental information
Abstract: A light beam can carry both spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM). SAM is commonly evidenced by circular dichroism (CD) experiments {\em i. e.} differential absorption of left and right-handed circularly polarized light. Recent experiments, supported by theoretical work, indicate that the corresponding effect with OAM instead of SAM is not observed in chiral matter. Isot… ▽ More

Observation of the intrinsic Abraham force in time-varying magnetic and electric fields
Abstract: The Abraham force exerted by a time-dependent electromagnetic field on neutral, polarizable matter has two contributions. The one induced by a time-varying magnetic field and a static electric field is reported here for the first time. We discuss our results in the context of the radiative momentum in matter. Our observations are consistent with Abraham's and Nelson's versions for radiative moment… ▽ More

Transverse Momentum Transfer in Atom-Light Scattering
Abstract: We predict a photon Hall effect in the optical cross-section of atomic hydrogen, which is caused by the interference between an electric quadrupole transition and an electric dipole transition from the ground state to $3D_{3/2}$ and $3P_{3/2}$. This induces a magneto-transverse acceleration comparable to a fraction of $g$. In atoms with a two level electric dipole transition, a much smaller transv… ▽ More

Magneto-electric momentum transfer to atoms and molecules
Abstract: We report the first observation of mechanical momentum transferred to atoms and molecules upon application of crossed electric and magnetic fields. We identify this momentum as the microscopic analogue of the classical Abraham force. Several predictions of additional magneto-electrically induced mechanical momentum are addressed. One of them, proposed to result from the interaction with the quantu… ▽ More

Observation of the Inverse Cotton-Mouton Effect
Abstract: We report the observation of the Inverse Cotton-Mouton Effect (ICME) i.e. a magnetization induced in a medium by non resonant linearly polarized light propagating in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. We present a detailed study of the ICME in a TGG crystal showing the dependence of the measured effect on the light intensity, the optical polarization, and on the external magnetic field.… ▽ More

Inverse Cotton-Mouton effect of the Vacuum and of atomic systems
Abstract: In this letter we calculate the Inverse Cotton-Mouton Effect (ICME) for the vacuum following the predictions of Quantum ElectroDynamics. We compare the value of this effect for the vacuum with the one expected for atomic systems. We finally show that ICME could be measured for the first time for noble gases using state-of-the-art laser systems and for the quantum vacuum with near-future laser faci… ▽ More

The BMV experiment : a novel apparatus to study the propagation of light in a transverse magnetic field
Abstract: In this paper, we describe in detail the BMV (Biréfringence Magnétique du Vide) experiment, a novel apparatus to study the propagation of light in a transverse magnetic field. It is based on a very high finesse Fabry-Perot cavity and on pulsed magnets specially designed for this purpose. We justify our technical choices and we present the current status and perspectives.

Magneto-electro-optical properties of the quantum vacuum and Lorentz invariance
Abstract: We consider the magneto-electric optical properties of the quantum vacuum and show that all the different phenomenona are related by Lorentz invariance. As a model calculation we show how crossed fields properties can be calculated starting from single field properties by using Lorentz transformations. Using this method we have studied for the first time the case of a crossed static magnetic fie… ▽ More
