In classical coherence theory, coherence time is typically related to the bandwidth of the optical field. Narrowing the bandwidth will result in the lengthening of the coherence time. This will erase temporal distinguishability of photons due to time delay in pulsed photon interference. However, this is changed in an SU(1,1)-type quantum interferometer where quantum entanglement is involved. In this paper, we investigate how the temporal coherence of the fields in a pulse-pumped SU(1,1) interferometer changes with the bandwidth of optical filtering. We find that, because of the quantum entanglement, the coherence of the fields does not improve when optical filtering is applied, in contrary to the classical coherence theory, and quantum entanglement plays a crucial role in quantum interference in addition to distinguishability.

Exploiting two interfering fields which are initially in the same temporal mode but with the spectra altered by propagating through different fibers, we characterize how the spectra of temporal modes changes with the fiber induced dispersion by measuring the fourth-order interference when the order number and bandwidth of temporal modes are varied. The experiment is done by launching a pulsed field in different temporal modes into an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer, in which the fiber lengths in two arms are different. The results show that the mode mismatch of two interfering fields, reflected by the visibility and pattern of interference, is not only dependent upon the amount of unbalanced dispersion but also related to the order number of temporal mode. In particular, the two interfering fields may become orthogonal under a modest amount of unbalanced dispersion when the mode number of the fields is $k\geq2$. Moreover, we discuss how to recover the spectrally distorted temporal mode by measuring and compensating the transmission induced dispersion. Our investigation paves the way for further investigating the distribution of temporally multiplexed quantum states in fiber network.

Interferometry has been used widely in sensing application. However, the technique is limited by the finite coherence time of the light sources when the interference paths are not balanced. Higher-order interference effects involve intensity correlations between multiple detectors and may have the advantage over the traditional second order interference effect exhibited in only one detector. We discuss various scenarios in fourth-order interference with unbalanced delays in different paths. We find in some cases, interference effect persists even when the delays are much larger than the coherence time of the sources. We also extend the discussion to non-stationary pulsed fields, which needs to consider the pulse shape and requires a different treatment. These results will be useful in remote sensing applications.

A new type of quantum entangled interferometer was recently realized that employs parametric amplifiers as the wave splitting and recombination elements. The quantum entanglement stems from the parametric amplifiers, which produce quantum correlated fields for probing the phase change signal in the interferometer. This type of quantum entangled interferometer exhibits some unique properties that are different from traditional beam splitter-based interferometers such as Mach-Zehnder interferometers. Because of these properties, it is superior to the traditional interferometers in many aspects, especially in the phase measurement sensitivity. We will review its unique properties and applications in quantum metrology and sensing, quantum information, and quantum state engineering.

We study the property of the field which is a mixing of two multi-mode thermal fields. We accomplish a general theoretical analysis and show that the mode of the mixed field, characterized by its intensity correlation function $g^{(2)}$, is determined by the two-photon interference between the two independent multi-mode thermal fields. Our analysis reveals that the mode structures of the two thermal fields play an important role in the interference. Comparing with $g^{(2)}$ for one of the individual field with less average mode number, $g^{(2)}$ of the mixed field always decreases due to the change of mode distribution, but the amount of drop depends on the relative overlap between the mode structures of the two thermal fields and their relative strength. Moreover, we verify the theoretical analysis by performing the experiments when the modes of two multi-mode thermal fields are identical, orthogonal and partially overlapped, respectively. The experimental results agree with theoretical predictions. Our investigation is useful for analyzing the signals carried by the intensity correlation of multi-mode thermal fields.

One of the important function in optical communication system is the distribution of information encoded in an optical beam. It is not a problem to accomplish this in a classical system since classical information can be copied at will. However, challenges arise in quantum system because extra quantum noise is often added when the information content of a quantum state is distributed to various users. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a quantum information tap by using a fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) with correlated inputs, whose noise is reduced by the destructive quantum interference through quantum entanglement between the signal and the idler input fields. By measuring the noise figure of the FOPA and comparing with a regular FOPA, we observe an improvement of 0.7+-0.1 dB and 0.84+-0.09 dB from the signal and idler outputs, respectively. When the low noise FOPA functions as an information splitter, the device has a total information transfer coefficient of Ts+Ti=1.47+-0.2, which is greater than the classical limit of 1. Moreover, this fiber based device works at the 1550 nm telecom band, so it is compatible with the current fiber-optical network.

Using the Bogoliubov transformation in multi-frequency modes to describe the evolution of the non-degenerate signal and idler twin beams, we theoretically investigate the quantum noise properties of the pulse pumped high gain fiber optical parametric amplifiers (FOPA). The results show that the noise figure of the FOPA is generally greater than the 3 dB quantum limit unless the joint spectral function is factorable and the spectrum of the input signal well matches the gain spectrum in the signal band. However, the intensity difference noise of the twin beams, which weakly depends on the joint spectral function, can be significantly less than the shot-noise limit when the temporal modes of the pump and the input signal are properly matched. Moreover, to closely resemble the real experimental condition, the quantum noise of twin beams generated from a broadband FOPA is numerically studied by taking the various kinds of experimental imperfections into account. Our study is not only useful for develo** a compact fiber source of twin beams, but also helpful for understanding the quantum noise limit of a pulse pumped FOPA in the fiber communication system.

This conversion process is realized with feedback of both the Raman pump and the frequency-converted fields (Stokes or anti-Stokes). The experimental setup is very simple and can be applied easily to produce the light source with larger frequency difference using other Raman media. They may have wide applications in nonlinear optics, atomic physics, quantum optics and precise measurement.

The noise of intensity difference of the twin beams is below the shot noise limit by 3.1 dB (10.4 dB after correction for losses). A detailed study reveals a number of limiting factors for higher noise reduction. Therefore, further noise reduction will be feasible once care is taken for these limiting factors.

By using parametric down-conversion process with a strong signal field injection, we demonstrate coherent frequency down-conversion from a pump photon to an idler photon. Contrary to a common misunderstanding, we show that the process can be free of quantum noise. With an interference experiment, we demonstrate that the coherence is preserved in the conversion process. This may lead to a high fidelity quantum state transfer from high frequency photon to low frequency photon and connects a missing link in a quantum network. With this scheme of coherent frequency down-conversion of photons, we propose a method of single-photon wavelength division multiplexing.
