We present a novel intuitive graphical method for the simulation of non-linear effects on stretched pulses characterized by a large time-bandwidth product. By way of example, it allows precise determination of effects occurring in CPA (chirped pulse amplification) laser chains, such as the pre-pulse generation by the non-linear Kerr effect. This method is not limited to first order dispersion and can handle all resulting distortions of the generated pre-pulse.

Ultra-high intensity femtosecond lasers at focus are now routinely used for relativistic motion of charged particles with peak intensities over 10^18W/cm^2. Such high-field experiments are very sensitive to the value of the peak intensity. Therefore, precise knowledge of the pulse intensity is a key prerequisite for the correct interpretation of experimental data. Accurate measurement of energy, spectral and spatial profiles being well established, peak intensity evaluation then only requires the determination of the spatiotemporal Strehl ratio. Here I propose a new method based on a simple analysis of a nonlinear effect. It diagnoses all the temporal, spatial and spatiotemporal coupling distortions. This method can even be implemented on target by using relativistic surface harmonic generation for example.

We characterize a semiconductor external cavity diode laser whose optical feedback is provided by a guided mode resonance filter (GMRF). We focus on the spectral properties. The wavelength of operation falls in the telecom range (1506 nm). The GMRF acting both as a wavelength intracavity filter and feedback mirror allows for a compact laser design. The single-mode operation is verified in a wide range of driving currents. We finely tune the cavity length to adjust the frequency by 14 GHz without mode-hops in agreement with the expected free-spectral range of the resonator $\sim$20 GHz. The compactness of the cavity allows fast frequency sweeps when modulating the current (90 MHz/mA at 100 kHz, the modulation bandwidth). The frequency noise (366 kHz white-noise contribution) is also analysed to evaluate the potential of our design for high-resolution applications.

We report on the setup and commissioning of a compact recollimating single plasma mirror for temporal contrast enhancement at the Draco 150 TW laser during laser-proton acceleration experiments. The temporal contrast with and without plasma mirror is characterized single-shot by means of self-referenced spectral interferometry with extended time excursion (SRSI-ETE) at unprecedented dynamic and temporal range. This allows for the first single-shot measurement of the plasma mirror trigger point, which is interesting for the quantitative investigation of the complex pre-plasma formation process at the surface of the target used for proton acceleration. As a demonstration of high contrast laser plasma interaction we present proton acceleration results with ultra-thin liquid crystal targets of ~ 1 $μ$m down to 10 nm thickness. Focus scans of different target thicknesses show that highest proton energies are reached for the thinnest targets at best focus. This indicates that the contrast enhancement is effective such that the acceleration process is not limited by target pre-expansion induced by laser light preceding the main laser pulse.
