High-fidelity simulations of mixing and combustion processes are generally computationally demanding and time-consuming, hindering their wide application in industrial design and optimization. The present study proposes parametric reduced order models (ROMs) to emulate spatial distributions of physical fields for multi-species mixing and combustion problems in a fast and accurate manner. The model integrates recent advances in experimental design, high-dimensional data assimilation, proper-orthogonal-decomposition (POD)-based model reduction, and machine learning (ML). The ML methods of concern include Gaussian process kriging, second-order polynomial regression, k-nearest neighbors, deep neural network (DNN), and support vector regression. Parametric ROMs with different ML methods are carefully examined through the emulation of mixing and combustion of steam-diluted fuel blend and oxygen issuing from a triple-coaxial nozzle. Two design parameters, fuel blending ratio (hydrogen/methane) and steam dilution ratio, are considered. Numerical simulations are performed and training data is assimilated at sampling points determined by the Latin-hypercube design method. The results show that ROM with kriging presents a superior performance in predicting almost all physical fields, such as temperature, velocity magnitude, and combustion products, at different validation points. The accuracy of ROM with DNN is not encouraging owing to the stringent requirement on the size of training database, which cannot be guaranteed as many engineering problems are specific and associated data availability is limited. For the emulation of spatial field, the parametric ROMs achieve a turnaround time of up to eight orders of magnitude faster than conventional numerical simulation, facilitating an efficient framework for design and optimization.

In advanced aero-propulsion engines, kerosene is often injected into the combustor at supercritical pressures, where flow dynamics is distinct from the subcritical counterpart. Large-eddy simulation combined with real-fluid thermodynamics and transport theories of a N-dodecane jet in oxygen crossflow at supercritical pressures is presented. Liquid dodecane at 600 K is injected into a supercritical oxygen environment at 700 K at different supercritical pressures and jet-to-crossflow momentum flux ratios (J). Various vortical structures are discussed in detail. The results shown that, with the same jet-to-crossflow velocity ratio of 0.75, the upstream shear layer (USL) is absolutely unstable at 6.0 MPa (J = 7.1) and convectively unstable at 3.0 MPa (J = 13.2). This trend is consistent with the empirical criterion for the stability characteristics of a jet in crossflow at subcritical pressures (Jcr = 10). While decreasing J to 7.1 at 3.0 MPa, however, the dominant Strouhal number of the USL varies along the upstream jet trajectory, and the USL becomes convectively unstable. Such abnormal change in stability behavior can be attributed to the real-fluid effect induced by strong density stratification at pressure of 3.0 MPa, under which a point of inflection in the upstream mixing layer renders large density gradient and tends to stabilize the USL. The stability behavior with varying pressure and J is further corroborated by linear stability analysis. The analysis of spatial mixing deficiencies reveals that the mixing efficiency is enhanced at a higher jet-to-crossflow momentum flux ratio.

Interestingly, a spin-crossover induced antiferromagnetism-to-ferromagnetism transition combined with stacking-order change from monoclinic to rhombohedral are founded, and the ferromagnetism origins from the partially occupied $t_{2g}$ orbitals. Different from previous understanding, the Mott metal-insulator transition of MnPS$_3$ does not occur simultaneously with the spin-crossover but in pressurized low-spin phase.

Many complex networks in the real world have community structures -- groups of well-connected nodes with important functional roles. It has been well recognized that the identification of communities bears numerous practical applications. While existing approaches mainly apply statistical or graph theoretical/combinatorial methods for community detection, in this paper, we present a novel geometric approach which enables us to borrow powerful classical geometric methods and properties. By considering networks as geometric objects and communities in a network as a geometric decomposition, we apply curvature and discrete Ricci flow, which have been used to decompose smooth manifolds with astonishing successes in mathematics, to break down communities in networks. We tested our method on networks with ground-truth community structures, and experimentally confirmed the effectiveness of this geometric approach.

Analysis of Internet topologies has shown that the Internet topology has negative curvature, measured by Gromov's "thin triangle condition", which is tightly related to core congestion and route reliability. In this work we analyze the discrete Ricci curvature of the Internet, defined by Ollivier, Lin, etc. Ricci curvature measures whether local distances diverge or converge. It is a more local measure which allows us to understand the distribution of curvatures in the network. We show by various Internet data sets that the distribution of Ricci cuvature is spread out, suggesting the network topology to be non-homogenous. We also show that the Ricci curvature has interesting connections to both local measures such as node degree and clustering coefficient, global measures such as betweenness centrality and network connectivity, as well as auxilary attributes such as geographical distances. These observations add to the richness of geometric structures in complex network theory.
