Direct detection of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) can provide strong evidence of their existence and the directional method would have an advantage over other methods to detect the clear signal of WIMPs. Time projection chambers with micro-patterned gaseous detectors (MPGDs) are one of the common devices used in directional WIMP searches. A micro pixel chamber ($μ$-PIC), one of the various types of MPGDs, with specially selected low background materials (LBG$μ$-PIC) was developed and its performance was studied. The radon emission of the LBG$μ$-PIC was less than 1/60 of that of the $μ$-PIC currently in use. Although a non-negligible gain non-homogeneity was seen for the LBG$μ$-PIC, it can be used for the directional WIMP search with the correction of the non-homogeneity.

A NI$μ$TPC enables to measure the absolute position in the drift direction for self-triggering TPCs. This study provides a development of a NI$μ$TPC using a micro pixel chamber ($μ$-PIC) with dedicated readout electronics, and an evaluation of the capability of three-dimensional absolute position reconstruction of nuclear recoil using a neutron source. The absolute track position was reconstructed throughout the drift volume with an efficiency of 70$\pm$5%. This work marks an important step for the NI$μ$TPCs towards the practical use for directional dark matter searches.

Atmospheres play a crucial role in planetary habitability. Around M dwarfs and young Sun-like stars, planets receiving the same insolation as the present-day Earth are exposed to intense stellar X-rays and extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) radiation. This study explores the fundamental question of whether the atmosphere of present-day Earth could survive in such harsh XUV environments. Previous theoretical studies suggest that stellar XUV irradiation is sufficiently intense to remove such atmospheres completely on short timescales. In this study, we develop a new upper-atmospheric model and re-examine the thermal and hydrodynamic responses of the thermospheric structure of an Earth-like N2-O2 atmosphere, on an Earth-mass planet, to an increase in the XUV irradiation. Our model includes the effects of radiative cooling via electronic transitions of atoms and ions, known as atomic line cooling, in addition to the processes accounted for by previous models. We demonstrate that atomic line cooling dominates over the hydrodynamic effect at XUV irradiation levels greater than several times the present level of the Earth. Consequentially, the atmosphere's structure is kept almost hydrostatic, and its escape remains sluggish even at XUV irradiation levels up to a thousand times that of the Earth at present. Our estimates for the Jeans escape rates of N2-O2 atmospheres suggest that these 1 bar atmospheres survive in early active phases of Sun-like stars. Even around active late M dwarfs, N2-O2 atmospheres could escape significant thermal loss on timescales of gigayears. These results give new insights into the habitability of terrestrial exoplanets and the Earth's climate history.

The theory of hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) is one of the standard methods to give exact evaluations of the dynamics as coupled to harmonic oscillator environments. However, the theory is numerically demanding due to its hierarchy, which is the set of auxiliary elements introduced to capture the non-Markovian and non-perturbative effects of environments. When system-bath coupling becomes relatively strong, the required computational resources and precision move beyond the regime that can be currently handled. This article presents a new representation of HEOM theory in which the hierarchy is mapped into a continuous space of a collective bath coordinate and several auxiliary coordinates as the form of the quantum Fokker-Planck equation. This representation gives a rigorous time evolution of the bath coordinate distribution and is more stable and efficient than the original HEOM theory, particularly when there is a strong system-bath coupling. We demonstrate the suitability of this approach to treat vibronic system models coupled to environments.

Light-matter interactions in the deep ultraviolet (DUV) wavelength region exhibits a variety of optical effects such as luminescence, photoisomerization, and polymerization in many materials. Despite the rich photochemistry and high spatial resolution due to the short wavelength, the notorious lack of DUV-compatible optical components and devices precludes use of DUV light in microscopy and lithography as a routine laboratory tool. Here, we present the use of two-photon excitation with visible laser light to realizes photo-polymerization of molecules with an excitation energy equivalent to DUV light. Using standard optics for visible light, methacrylate oligomers were polymerized with 400 nm femtosecond pulses without any addition of photo-initiators and sensitizers. By scanning the laser focus in 3D, a series of fine 3D structures were created with the smallest resolved line-space features of 80 nm. We found DUV polymerizations induced by two-photon absorption is surprisingly efficient and requires laser intensity only on the order of 100 kW/cm^2. With the variety of successful demonstrations including organic- and inorganic-material-made-structures presented, our direct nano-3D-printing method would be a valuable tool for nanofabrication in 3D.

Due to its exceptional lithium storage capacity silicon is considered as a promising candidate for anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In the present work we demonstrate that methods of the soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (SXES) can be used as a powerful tool for the comprehensive analysis of the electronic and structural properties of lithium silicides Li$_{x}$Si forming in LIB's anode upon Si lithiation. On the basis of density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations it is shown that coordination of Si atoms in Li$_{x}$Si decreases with increase in Li concentration both for the crystalline and amorphous phases. In amorphous a-Li$_{x}$Si alloys Si tends to cluster forming Si-Si covalent bonds even at the high lithium concentration. It is demonstrated that the Si-L$_{2,3}$ emission bands of the crystalline and amorphous Li$_{x}$Si alloys show different spectral dependencies reflecting the process of disintegration of Si-Si network into Si clusters and chains of the different sizes upon Si lithiation. The Si-L$_{2,3}$ emission band of Li$_{x}$Si alloys become narrower and shifts towards higher energies with an increase in Li concentration. The shape of the emission band depends on the relative contribution of the X-ray radiation from the Si atoms having different coordination. This feature of the Si-L$_{2,3}$ spectra of Li$_{x}$Si alloys can be used for the detailed analysis of the Si lithiation process and LIB's anode structure identification.

Authors:

Abstract:
We propose a dynamical model for business cycle based on an optimal DI model. In the model there exists a conserved quantity, which corresponds to the total energy in a dynamical system. We found that the business cycle with the period 6 or 7 years is nicely reproduced, since the model predicts a periodic motion in the conservative system.
