The unique discovery of magnetic exciton in van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS3 arises between two quantum many-body states of a Zhang-Rice singlet excited state and a Zhang-Rice triplet ground state. Simultaneously, the spectral width of photoluminescence originating from this exciton is exceedingly narrow as 0.4 meV. These extraordinary properties, including the extreme coherence of the magnetic exciton in NiPS3, beg many questions. We studied do** effects using Ni1-xCdxPS3 using two experimental techniques and theoretical studies. Our experimental results show that the magnetic exciton is drastically suppressed upon a few % Cd do**. All these happen while the width of the exciton only gradually increases, and the antiferromagnetic ground state is robust. These results highlight the lattice uniformity's hidden importance as a prerequisite for coherent magnetic exciton. Finally, an exciting scenario emerges: the broken charge transfer forbids the otherwise uniform formation of the coherent magnetic exciton in (Ni,Cd)PS3.

Heat exchanger tube rows can influence the thermoacoustic instability behaviour of combustion systems since they act as both acoustic scatterers and unsteady heat sinks. Therefore, with careful tuning of their thermoacoustic properties, heat exchangers have the potential to act as passive control devices. In this work, we focus on (only) the acoustic scattering behaviour of heat exchanger tubes. We present a comparison of existing acoustic models for tube rows and slits, models for the latter having the advantage of incorporating frequency dependence. We then propose a new model that enables the adaptation of slit models for tube rows. This model is validated against experiments and Linearised Navier Stokes Equations (LNSE) predictions for the transmission and reflection coefficients, including phase information. The model predictions show very good agreement with the experimental and numerical validations, especially for low frequencies (Strouhal number < 0.5, based on tube radius and excitation frequency), with mean differences less than 2% for the transmission coefficients (the reflection coefficient errors are somewhat larger since their magnitudes are very close to zero).

The family of group IV-VI monochalcogenides has an atomically puckered layered structure, and their atomic bond configuration suggests the possibility for the realization of various polymorphs. Here, we report the synthesis of the first hexagonal polymorph from the family of group IV-VI monochalcogenides, which is conventionally orthorhombic. Recently predicted four-atomic-thick hexagonal GeSe, so-called γ-GeSe, is synthesized and clearly identified by complementary structural characterizations, including elemental analysis, electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging, and polarized Raman spectroscopy. The electrical and optical measurements indicate that synthesized γ-GeSe exhibits high electrical conductivity of 3x10^5 S/m, which is comparable to those of other two-dimensional layered semimetallic crystals. Moreover, γ-GeSe can be directly grown on h-BN substrates, demonstrating a bottom-up approach for constructing vertical van der Waals heterostructures incorporating γ-GeSe. The newly identified crystal symmetry of γ-GeSe warrants further studies on various physical properties of γ-GeSe.

Abstract:
In order to study the single bunch longitudinal instability in BEPCII, experiments on the positron ring (BPR) for the bunch lengthening phenomenon were made. By analyzing the experimental data based on Gao's theory, the longitudinal loss factor for the bunch are obtained. Also, the total wake potential and the beam current threshold are estimated.

The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) Pathfinder is a payload on the Russian Lomonosov satellite, scheduled to be launched in November 2011. The Observatory is designed to detect early UV/Optical photons from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). There are two telescopes and one main data acquisition system: the UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger Telescope (UBAT), the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT), and the UFFO Data Acquisition (UDAQ) system. The UDAQ controls and manages the operation and communication of each telescope, and is also in charge of the interface with the satellite. It will write the data taken by each telescope to the NOR flash memory and sends them to the satellite via the Bus-Interface system (BI). It also receives data from the satellite including the coordinates and time of an external trigger from another payload, and distributes them to two telescopes. These functions are implemented in field programmable gates arrays (FPGA) for low power consumption and fast processing without a microprocessor. The UDAQ architecture, control of the system, and data flow will be presented.

The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) is a new space-based experiment to observe Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). GRBs are the most luminous electromagnetic events in the universe and occur randomly in any direction. Therefore the UFFO consists of two telescopes; UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger Telescope (UBAT) to detect GRBs using a wide field-of-view (FOV), and a Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) to observe UV/optical events rapidly within the narrow, targeted FOV. The SMT is a Ritchey-Chretien telescope that uses a motorized mirror system and an Intensified Charge-Coupled Device (ICCD). When the GRB is triggered by the UBAT, the SMT receives the position information and rapidly tilts the mirror to the target. The ICCD start to take the data within a second after GRB is triggered. Here we give the details about the SMT readout electronics that deliver the data.
