Water droplets are a perspective highly abundant phase-change material to realize tunable optical lenses. We demonstrated for the first time that freezing mesoscale water droplet could be use as tunable optical lens, such that freezing becomes an asset despite both the low absolute values of the refractive indices of the shell and core materials and their optical contrast. It was shown that the dielectric shell of mesoscale water droplet in the form of solid ice allows controlling both the maximum field intensity and the focus position of the formed photonic nanojet. The formation of ice with air bubbles during the freezing of a water droplet is appropriate for a dynamic increase in the range of change of the focal position compared to solid ice. The proposed concept of a tunnelable spherical lens based on a freezing water drop can be used for microscopy, optical tra** in "green" mesotronics.

We first introduce and demonstrated the basic concepts of all-optical switch without changes in the wavelength of illumination of a particle or any moving parts involved. The principle of operation of the switch based on the temperature-induced phase change inside water droplet refractive index. Simulation shows that the optical isolation of switched channels for an optical switch with linear dimensions of about 15λ3, based on freezing water droplet, can reach 10 dB during the temperature variation at fixed wavelength. The freezing mesoscale droplets acting as time domain photonic hook generator open the intriguing route for full optical switching in a multifunctional green electronics tool for sensing, integrated optics and optical computers.

In this study, we propose a novel design of the triangular mesoscale Janus prisms for the generation of the long photonic hook. The numerical simulations based on the finite-difference time-domain method are used to examine the formation mechanism of the photonic hook. The electric intensity distributions near the micro-prisms are calculated for operating at different re-fractive indices and spaces of the two triangular micro-prisms. The asymmetric vortexes of in-tensity distributions result in the long photonic hook with large bending angle. The length and the bending angle of the photonic hook are efficiently modulated by changing the space be-tween the two triangular micro-prisms. Moreover, the narrow width of the photonic hook is achieved beyond the diffraction limit. The triangular Janus micro-prisms have high potential for practical applications in optical tweezers, nanoparticle sorting and manipulation and photonic circuits.

In this manuscript, we demonstrate the design and experimental proof of an optical cloaking structure which multi-directionally conceals a perfectly electric conductor (PEC) object from an incident plane wave. The dielectric modulation around the highly reflective scattering PEC object is determined by an optimization process for multi-directional cloaking purposes. And to obtain the multi-directional effect of the cloaking structure, an optimized slice is mirror symmetrized through a radial perimeter. Three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain method is integrated with genetic optimization to achieve cloaking design. In order to overcome the technological problems of the corresponding devices in the optical range and to experimentally demonstrate the proposed concept, our experiments were carried out on a scale model in the microwave range. The scaled proof-of-concept of proposed structure is fabricated by 3D printing of polylactide material, and the brass metallic alloy is used as a perfect electrical conductor for microwave experiments. A good agreement between numerical and experimental results is achieved. The proposed design approach is not restricted only to multi-directional optical cloaking but can also be applied for different cloaking scenarios dealing with electromagnetic waves in nanoscales as well as other types of such as acoustic waves. Using nanotechnology, our scale proof-of-concept research will take the next step towards the creation of "optical cloaking" devices.

Broadband light illumination of a mesoscale dielectric sphere makes it possible to reveal new effects that associated with super resonance mode. These include the possibility of generating high-order Fano resonance cascades. The quality factor has the order Q=10^7. Super-resonance-enabled subdiffraction fields localization by mesoscale dielectric sphere under broadband light illuminations (e.g., at wavebands of 400 - 700 nm for refractive index of sphere n=1.5-1.9 and 1500 - 1600 nm for n=3.47) have been investigated. The conditions for the quasi-periodicity of superresonance peaks are established. The dependence of the amplitude modulation of Fano cascades on the refractive index of the sphere is shown. These results are important in deep understanding of physics of the super-resolution mechanism related to superresonance mode and will find great potential applications in many other area.

Recently, we showed that dielectric mesoscale spheres support super-resonance effect, i.e. high-order Mie resonance modes with giant field enhancement. The presence of the surrounding medium leads to a significant influence in the intensity of the electric and magnetic fields in the particle. In this paper, we show that this effect can be used for highly precise control of the effective refractive index of a medium, such as water. We show that a change in the water temperature by dT=0.0106 C (or the effective refractive index of the medium by 2e-6) leads to a twofold drop in electric field intensity. All the presented results are strictly within the framework of the classical Mie theory without any modifications. A detailed study of the ranges of values of the size parameters of a spherical particle of the order of 10, which had previously been neglected, made it possible to reveal a new, unusual physics of the phenomenon.

Dielectric mesoscale spheres have aroused strong interest because of their potential to localize light at deep subwavelength volume and to yield extremal internal magnetic and/or electric field enhancements. Recently, we showed that such particle could support high-order Mie resonance modes with giant field localization and enhancement. Optimizing the internal fields appears as a key challenge for enhancing wave matter interactions in dielectric mesoscale particles. However, a dielectric particle is always located in some medium, and not in a vacuum. Moreover, the question is how much the environment medium affects the internal field intensities enhancement in the super-resonance effect. Based on Mie theory we show for the first time that the presence of the environment leads to a significant decrease in the intensity of the field in the particle. Thus, the study of the effect of super-resonance becomes meaningless without taking into account the environment. However, a greater enhancement of the internal field is found for the blue-shifted Mie size parameter of the sphere when the particle, for example, is in air rather than in vacuum.

In this paper, we propose nanoholes structured wavelength-scaled dielectric cubic particle with refractive index near two, where the array of nanoholes can act as a plurality of near-field probes to simultaneously illuminate the sample surface and it has the potential of surpassing the performance of most existing nearfield imaging approaches. We also offer the concept of the single nano-structuring of a dielectric cylinder or sphere made from conventional optical materials. The choice of the diameter of the nanohole in the particle "transfers" it into the resonance mode, when the characteristics of the field localized in the shadow part of the particle are determined not by the wavelength, but by the size of the nanohole. Thus, the diameter of the focused spot at the exit from the particle can be much smaller than the solid immersion diffraction limit.

Photonic hook is a high-intensity bent light focus with a proportional curvature to the wavelength of the incident light. Based on this unique light-bending phenomenon, a novel near-field photonic switch by means of a right-trapezoid dielectric Janus particle-lens embedded in the core of a planar waveguide is proposed for switching the photonic signals at two common optical communication wavelengths 1310 nm and 1550 nm by using numerical simulations. The signals at these two wavelengths can be guided to different routes according to their oppositely bent photonic hooks to realise wavelength selective switching. The switching mechanism is analysed by an in-house developed three-dimensional (3D) Poynting vector visualisation technology. It demonstrates that the 3D distribution and number of Poynting vector vortexes produced by the particle highly affect the shapes and bending directions of the photonic hooks causing the near-field switching, and multiple independent high-magnitude areas matched by the regional Poynting vector streamlines can form these photonic hooks. The corresponding mechanism can only be represented by 3D Poynting vector distributions and is being reported for the first time.

We present the physical concept and sample engineering design of a new miniature pressure sensor based on the whispering gallery modes (WGMs) optically excited in a dielectric microsphere placed near a flexible reflective membrane which acts as an ambient pressure sensing element. WGMs excitation is carried out by free-space coupling of optical radiation to a microsphere. The distinctive feature of proposed sensor design is double excitation of optical eigenmodes by forward and backward propagating radiation reflected from a membrane that causes WGMs interference in particle volume. The optical intensity of resulting resonant field established in the microsphere carries information about the exact position of the pressure-loaded reflecting membrane. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor strongly depends on the quality factor of the excited resonant mode, as well as geometrical and mechanical parameters of the flexible membrane. Important advantages of the proposed sensor are miniature design (linear sensor dimensions depends only on the membrane diameter) and the absence of a mechanical contact of pressure-sensitive element with WGM resonator.

The possibility of overcoming the critical condition for localized photonic nanojet upon plane optical wave diffraction at mesoscale dielectric particle, which is commonly known as "the refractive index contrast is less than two", was recently reported in our works. To this end, the novel geometrical scheme of photonic nanojet generation in "reflection mode" was proposed based on a super-contrast microparticle (n~2) placed near a flat mirror. In this paper, through the numerical FDTD calculations of optical near-field structure of 2D and 3D dielectric microparticles (cylinder, sphere) we extend our considerations to the case of oblique particle-at-mirror illumination and present new physical phenomena arising in the considered photonic geometry. Those are the generation of a quasi-retrograde photonic nanojet following the inclined particle illumination and the formation of a curvilinear spatial region of optical field localization in the form of a "specular reflection photonic hook" (s-Hook). Two different regimes of s-Hook formation are analyzed by changing the direction of light incidence and by flat mirror rotation.

A Teflon (Polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE) sphere can be used as a focusing lens in the applications of imaging and sensing due to its low-loss property in the terahertz (THz) band. In this paper, we analytically calculated field intensities and focusing parameters for Teflon spheres at different low-loss levels and then discovered a super-enhancement focusing effect in the spheres with particular size parameters, which can stimulate about 4000 times stronger field intensity than that for incident radiation as well as the great potential of overcoming diffraction limit despite high sensitivity to the magnitude of Teflon loss. A subsequent analysis of scattering amplitudes proved that the strong scattering of a single order mode in the internal electric or magnetic field is the main factor causing this phenomenon.

For the first time to the best of our knowledge, we report a unique property of retro-PNJ for increasing its focal length and intensity using microparticles with the optical contrast exceeding limiting value (n > 2) that fundamentally distinguishes retro-PNJ from regular PNJ behavior. This may drastically increase the trap** potential of PNJ-based optical tweezers.

A new type of curved subwavelength light beam, a photonic hook (PH), emerged from the diffraction of a light wave at a mesoscale dielectric object with broken internal symmetry (Janus particle) was recently reported. For efficient and technically simpler generation of PHs, we propose a new type of asymmetric Janus microparticles, the orthogonal microbars, composed from materials with different refractive indices. Based on the numerical simulations by means of the Finite Elements Method, we investigate the physical mechanism of PH formation by analyzing the field intensity distribution and the energy fluxes near such particles. The influence of dielectric substrate is also studied for the first time. We show that by changing the refractive index contrast between two parts of Janus bar the shape and curvature of the PHs can be efficiently controlled. The criteria of PH quality for complex characterizing the photonic hook curvature is introduced and discussed as well.

We report on a very first experimental observation of a new curved plasmonic beam, a plasmonic hook (PH), for surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves. We demonstrate that the SPP PH effect could be realized within a trapezoidal dielectric microstructure with the relative ease of fabrication compared to the generation of the Airy SPP waves which require complex techniques to compensate the wave vectors mismatch. Using numerical analysis, we predicted the PH phenomenon, optimized the microstructure and then confirmed the SPP PH existence via amplitude and phase-resolved scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy at the telecom wavelengths of 1530-1570 nm. The experimental results are in reasonable agreement with our predictions. Importantly, the SPP PH demonstrates the smallest radius of curvature ever recorded for SPP waves compared to that for the Airy-family plasmonic beams providing many useful applications spreading from nanoparticles manipulation toward bio-sensing within a nanoscale.

Here, the curved photonic nanojets (photonic hooks) are generated by single mesoscale microcylinder that we fabricated from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), upon its boundary illumination and adjustable area at an incident wavelength of λ = 405 nm. Experimental observations were conducted for PDMS microcylinder of diameter d = 5 μm deposited on a silicon substrate with the aluminum mask. Measurements were performed with a scanning optical microscope. Our experimental results are in good agreement with numerical predictions performed with the finite-difference time-domain method. The observed the full widths at half-maximum of photonic hooks are 0.48λ, 0.56λ, and 0.76λ for tilt angles of θ = 0°, 5.7°, and 20.1° respectively, at the mask heights of h = 0, 0.25d and 0.5d, respectively, displaying the specificities of the field localization. These photonic hooks have great potential in complex manipulation such as super-resolution imaging, surface fabrication, and optomechanical manipulation in curved trajectories smaller than wavelength.

We report on the first experimental demonstration that the microstructure based on a dielectric cuboid combined to a thin metal film can act as an efficient plasmonic lens allowing focusing surface plasmons in a subwavelength scale. By means of numerical simulation of surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) field intensity distributions in the microstructure, we observe a low divergence of plasmonic photonic jet (PPJ) and high intensity subwavelength spots at the communication wavelength of 1530 nm. Then we fabricate an experimental sample of the microstructure and study the SSP field intensity distributions using the amplitude and phase-resolved scanning near-field optical microscopy and demonstrate the experimental observation of the PPJ effect for the SSP waves. Such novel and simple platform can provide new pathways for plasmonics, high-resolution imaging, biophotonics as well as optical data storage.

We also reveal the connection of these super-resonances in the generation of magnetic nanojets and of giant magnetic fields in particles with high refractive index.

This new self-bending acoustical beam is generate from a rectangular trapezoid of a polymer material immersed in water and has unique features. The radius of curvature of acoustical hook is less than the wavelength, it is represents the smallest radius of curvature ever recorded for any acoustical beams. The origin of this curved beam is in the vortices of intensity flow that appear inside the solid due to the conversion of the incident longitudinal wave mode to a shear wave in a solid. These vortices redirect the intensity flow, which causes the beam to bend. These results may be potentially useful when an object, that is in the path of the beam, must be avoid, such as in cancer treatments in which tumors are found behind bones such as ribs. It could also have potential applications in particle manipulations.

We introduce a novel phase-only diffractive optical element called chiral binary square axicon (CBSA). The CBSA is designed by linearly rotating the square half-period zones of the binary square axicon with respect to one another. A quadratic phase mask (QPM) is combined with the CBSA using modulo-2π phase addition technique to bring the far-field intensity pattern of CBSA at the focal plane of the QPM and to introduce quasi-achromatic effects. The periodically rotated zones of CBSA produces a whirlpool phase profile and twisted intensity patterns at the focal plane of QPM. The degree of twisting seen in the intensity patterns is dependent upon the angular step size of rotation of the zones. The intensity pattern was found to rotate around the optical axis along the direction of propagation. The phase patterns of CBSA with different angles of zone rotation are displayed on a phase-only spatial light modulator and the experimental results were found to match with the simulation results. To evaluate the optical trap** capabilities of CBSA, an optical trap** experiment was carried out and the optical fields generated by CBSA were used for trap** and rotating yeast cells.

In the case of orbital angular momentum (OAM), continuous spiral phase patterns in dynamic or geometric phase are often employed with the phase patterns existing across the entire transverse plane. Here we exploit the uncertainty relation between OAM and angle to create structured OAM fields using multilevel OAM holograms. We show theoretically and experimentally that only a multilevel angular phase contour in the near-field is needed to create structured OAM light in the far-field, exploiting the reciprocal nature of angular momentum and angle. We use this approach to demonstrate exotic 3D structured light control to show the evolution of the Poynting vector in such fields and to highlight the physics underlying this phenomenon.

The chains are basically designed with several dielectric cubes with dimensions λ0 along the x, y and z axes placed periodically along the axial z-axis and separated by an air-gap. Based on this, a systematic study of the focusing properties and wave guiding of this chain is performed when the air-gap between the dielectric cubes is changed from 0.25λ0 to 2.5λ0 with the best performance achieved with the latter design. The numerical results of focusing and transport properties are carried out using Finite Integration Technique. The capability of generating terajets using 3D dielectric cuboids working at terahertz (THz) frequencies (as analogues of nanojets in the infrared band) are introduced and studied numerically. The focusing performance of the terajets are evaluated in terms of the transversal full width at half maximum along x- and y- directions using different refractive indexes for a 3D dielectric cuboid with a fixed geometry, obtaining a quasi-symmetric terajet with a subwavelength resolution of ~0.46λ0 when the refractive index is n = 1.41. Moreover, the backscattering enhancement produced when metal particles are introduced in the terajet region is demonstrated for a 3D dielectric cuboid and compared with its 2D counterpart. The results of the jet generated for the 3D case are experimentally validated at sub-THz waves, demonstrating the ability to produce terajets using 3D cuboids.
