We theoretically study the spin current between two polarized Fermi gases with repulsive interactions near the itinerant ferromagnetic phase transition. We consider a two-terminal model where the left reservoir is fixed to be fully polarized while the polarization of the right reservoir is tuned through a fictitious magnetic field defined by the chemical-potential difference between different atomic hyperfine states. We calculate the spectra of the spin-flip susceptibility function, which displays a magnon dispersion emerging from the Stoner continuum at low momentum in the ferromagnetic phase. Based on the spin-flip susceptibility and using Keldysh Green's function formalism, we investigate the spin current induced by quasiparticle and spin-flip tunneling processes, respectively, and show their dependence on the polarization bias between two reservoirs. The one-body (quasiparticle) tunneling demonstrates a linear dependence with respect to the polarization bias. In contrast, the spin-flip process manifests a predominantly cubic dependence on the bias. While indicating an enhanced magnon tunneling in the strong-coupling regime, our results also demonstrate a characteristic behavior around the critical repulsive strength for ferromagnetic phase transition at low temperatures.

We theoretically investigate a spin-mediated conversion from fluid dynamics to voltage, known as spin hydrodynamic generation (SHDG), in oscillatory and transient unsteady flows. We consider unsteady flows of liquid metal between two parallel infinite planes and then calculate its vorticity fields based on the Navier--Stokes equation for an incompressible viscous fluid. The spin accumulation and spin current generated by unsteady flows are derived using a spin-diffusion equation, including spin-vorticity coupling, which is a couple of angular momentum between electron spin and vorticity field in unsteady flows. The estimation of SHDG in liquid mercury flow suggests that an observable magnitude of voltage can be induced in unsteady flows. Our results are expected to enable the realization of high-speed spin devices with unsteady flows and broaden the range of fluid spintronics applicability.

The recent development of high-performance computing enables us to generate spatio-temporal high-resolution data of nonlinear dynamical systems and to analyze them for a deeper understanding of their complex nature. This trend can be found in a wide range of science and engineering, which suggests that detailed investigations on efficient data handling in physical science must be required in the future. This study considers the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to achieve efficient data storage and estimation of scientific big data derived from nonlinear dynamical systems. The CNN is used to reconstruct three-dimensional data from a few numbers of two-dimensional sections in a computationally friendly manner. The present model is a combination of two- and three-dimensional CNNs, which allows users to save only some of the two-dimensional sections to reconstruct the volumetric data. As examples, we consider a flow around a square cylinder at the diameter-based Reynolds number $Re_D = 300$. We demonstrate that volumetric fluid flow data can be reconstructed with the present method from as few as five sections. Furthermore, we propose a combination of the present CNN-based reconstruction with an adaptive sampling-based super-resolution analysis to augment the data compressibility. Our report can serve as a bridge toward practical data handling for not only fluid mechanics but also a broad range of physical sciences.

We investigate electron spin currents induced optically via plasmonic modes in the Kretschmann configuration. By utilising the scattering matrix formalism, we take the plasmonic mode coupled to external laser drive into consideration and calculate induced magnetisation in the metal. The spatial distribution of the plasmonic mode is inherited by the induced magnetisation, which acts as inhomogeneous effective magnetic field and causes the Stern-Gerlach effect to drive electron spin currents in the metal. We solve spin diffusion equation with a source term to analyse the spin current as a function of the spin diffusion length of the metal, the frequency and the incident angle of the external drive.

We propose and analyze surface-plasmon-driven electron spin currents in a thin metallic film. The electron gas in the metal follows the transversally rotating electric fields of the surface plasmons (SPs), which leads to a static magnetization gradient. We consider herein SPs in a thin-film insulator-metal-insulator structure and solve the spin diffusion equation in the presence of a magnetization gradient. The results reveal that the SPs at the metal interfaces generate spin currents in the metallic film. For thinner film, the SPs become strongly hybridized, which increases the magnetization gradient and enhances the spin current. We also discuss how the spin current depends on SP wavelength and the spin-diffusion length of the metal. The polarization of the spin current can be controlled by tuning the wavelength of the SPs and/or the spin diffusion length.

We propose a mechanism of angular momentum conversion from optical transverse spin in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) to conduction electron spin. Free electrons in the metal follow the transversally spinning electric field of SPP, and the resulting orbital motions create inhomogeneous static magnetisation in the metal. By solving the spin diffusion equation in the SPP, we find that the magnetisation field generates an electron spin current. We show that there exists a resonant condition where the spin current is resonantly enhanced, and the polarisation of the spin current is flipped. Our theory reveals a novel functionality of SPP as a spin current source.

In this Letter, we show the torsional mechanical oscillation of an optical cavity can be coupled to the optical modes by introducing birefringence, which produces nondegenerate modes in the cavity: ordinary and extraordinary rays. Twisting the cavity mixes them and modulates the electromagnetic energy. We find torsional optomechanical Hamiltonian by quantising the total energy and reveal the torsional oscillation can be resonantly driven by light.
