Abstract:
We present measurements of two-color X-ray free electron laser (FEL) pulses generated with a novel scheme utilizing a sextupole magnet. The sextupole, in combination with a standard orbit control tool, is used to suppress the radiation from the bunch core, while kee** the head and the tail of the beam lasing, each at a different photon energy. We demonstrate a novel scheme for imposing and removing large energy chirp on relativistic electron bunches relying on the transverse-to-longitudinal mixing accomplished with a set of transverse deflecting cavities. The working principles of the new concept are explained using the first order matrix formalism in the approximation of the linear single-particle dynamics. The scheme demonstrates versatility regarding the average beam energy, and hence, positioning along the accelerator beamline. The performance of the scheme is numerically investigated with the elegant particle tracking code. It is shown that the associated nonlinear effects, causing emittance deterioration for the extreme quantities of the total energy spread can be effectively compensated by optimization of the Twiss parameters while relying on the eigen-emittance analysis. The impact of the longitudinal space charge effects on the beam dynamics in the proposed scheme is also investigated.

Through an interaction of theory and optimization-guided design, we have developed a novel bunch compression scheme based on an asymmetric double emittance exchange (DEEX) with greatly reduced coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) effects. First, we discuss the benefits of the phase space exchange-based bunch compressor (BC) in comparison to the chicane-based counterpart in the approximation of linear single particle dynamics and with respect to microbunching instabilities driven by longitudinal space charge forces. We present simulation results for nonlinear dynamics in a symmetric DEEX BC which accounts for the CSR effects of the scheme with direct and mirrored longitudinal phase space at the exit of the beamline. The later scheme demonstrates self-compensation of CSR effects on the longitudinal dynamics. Next, we optimize the parameters of the beam elements with an adaptive feedback, resulting in an asymmetric configuration of the scheme with compensated CSR and nonlinear effects on the transverse dynamics, which we further improve by incorporating several sextupoles relying on an eigen-emittance analysis. Finally, we discuss how this method can be generalized for optimizing nonlinear beam dynamics with collective effects.

Abstract:
We propose a new method for the detection and characterization of nuclear decay processes. Specifically, we describe how nuclear decay recoil can be observed within small particles levitated in an optical trap with high positional resolution. Precise measurements of the magnitude of each recoil as well as their rate of occurrence can provide accurate information about the isotopic composition of a…

We propose a new method for the detection and characterization of nuclear decay processes. Specifically, we describe how nuclear decay recoil can be observed within small particles levitated in an optical trap with high positional resolution. Precise measurements of the magnitude of each recoil as well as their rate of occurrence can provide accurate information about the isotopic composition of a radioactive sample. We expect that this new technique for nuclear material characterization will be especially useful in the area of nuclear forensic analysis.
