A method for calculating the field shift contribution to isotope shifts in many-electron atoms, incorporating quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects, is introduced. We also implement the model QED approach to incorporate QED contribution to the nuclear recoil effect at the high-order correlation effects treatment level. The proposed computational scheme is used to revise the value of the root-mean-square (rms) nuclear charge radius of the isomer of aluminium-26, $^{26m}$Al. This radius is important for the global analysis of the $V_{ud}$ element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. The difference in mean-square nuclear charge radii of $^{27}$Al and $^{26m}$Al, obtained by combining the calculated atomic factors with recently measured isotope shift (IS) of the $3s^23p~^2P_{3/2} \to 3s^24s~^2S_{1/2}$ transition in Al, is $0.443(44)(19)~{\rm fm}^2$, where the first and second uncertainties are experimental and theoretical ones, respectively. The latter is reduced by a factor of 4 with respect to the previous study. Using this value and the known value of the rms charge radius of $^{27}$Al, the resultant value $R_c(^{26m}$Al) = 3.132(10)~fm is obtained. With the improved accuracy of the calculated IS factors the error in $R_c(^{26m}$Al) is now dominated by the experimental uncertainty. Similar revision of rms charge radii is made for the $^{28}$Al, $^{29}$Al, $^{30}$Al, $^{31}$Al and $^{32}$Al isotopes using existing IS measurements. Additionally, atomic factors are computed for the {$3s^23p~^2P_{3/2} \to 3s^24s~^2S_{1/2}$}, {$3s^23p~^2P_{1/2} \to 3s^25s~^2S_{1/2}$} and {$3s^23p~^2P_{3/2} \to 3s^25s~^2S_{1/2}$} transitions in Al, which can be used in future experimental studies.

Inspired by an approach formulated in [J. Sapirstein and K. T. Cheng, Phys. Rev. The performance of the method is studied by evaluating the corresponding corrections to the binding energies of He-like ions and by comparing the obtained results with the state-of-the-art values available in the literature: our calculations involving a much smaller number of partial waves show an improvement in accuracy.

The problem of orbital collapse of the $5g$ and $6f$ electrons in atoms of superheavy elements (SHE) is considered. Previously, the presence of the orbital collapse was established for the $4f$ and $5f$ elements of the periodic table. Because of the large centrifugal term for the $f$ and $g$ electrons, the effective radial potential has two wells, one narrow and deep and the other wide but shallow. Depending on the external parameters, the electron can be either localized in the outer well with low binding energy and large average radius or in the inner one with higher energy and smaller radius. In this work, we demonstrate the existence of the orbital collapse for the $5g$ electrons when changing the total angular momentum $J$ of the atom. We also found that for some SHE elements, two different solutions of the same Dirac-Fock equations may coexist, with the $5g$ electron localized either in the inner or outer well. In both cases, the radial wave functions are nodeless. The problem of the dual-state coexistence is studied by the configuration-interaction method in the Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbital basis as well.

The obtained $1σ$ ground-state energies are compared with previous calculations, when possible. Upon analysis of three different placements of the coordinate system's origin in the monopole approximation of the two-center potential: (1) in the middle, between the nuclei, (2) in the center of the heavy nucleus, and (3) in the center of the light nucleus, a substantial difference between the results is found. The leading contributions of one-electron quantum electrodynamics (self-energy and vacuum polarization) are evaluated within the monopole approximation as well.

The bound-state QED approach is applied to calculations of the $2p_{3/2} \rightarrow 2s$ transition energies in He-, Li-, and Be-like uranium. For U$^{90+}$ and U$^{89+}$, standard perturbation theory for a single level is employed, while the calculations of U$^{88+}$ have required its counterpart for quasidegenerate levels. The utilized approach merges the rigorous QED treatment up to the second order of perturbation theory with the higher-order electron-correlation contributions evaluated within the Breit approximation. The higher-order screened QED effects are estimated by means of the model-QED operator. The nuclear recoil, nuclear polarization, and nuclear deformation effects are taken into account as well. Along with the transition energies, their pairwise differences are calculated. The comprehensive analysis of the uncertainties due to uncalculated effects is carried out, and the most accurate theoretical predictions, which are in perfect agreement with available experimental data, are obtained.

A model-operator approach to fully relativistic calculations of the nuclear recoil effect on energy levels in many-electron atomic systems is worked out. The one-electron part of the model operator for treating the normal mass shift beyond the Breit approximation is represented by a sum of semilocal and nonlocal potentials. The latter ones are constructed by employing the diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements rigorously evaluated for hydrogenlike ions to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio. The specific mass shift beyond the lowest-order relativistic approximation has a form which can be directly employed in calculations. The capabilities of the method are probed by comparison of its predictions with the results of ab initio QED calculations. The proposed operator can be easily incorporated into any relativistic calculation based on the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian.

The model-QED-operator approach [Phys. Rev. A 88, 012513 (2013)] to calculations of the radiative corrections to binding and transition energies in atomic systems is extended to the range of nuclear charges $110 \leqslant Z \leqslant 170$. The self-energy part of the model operator is represented by a nonlocal potential based on diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements of the ab initio self-energy operator with the Dirac-Coulomb wave functions. The vacuum-polarization part consists of the Uehling contribution which is readily computed for an arbitrary nuclear-charge distribution and the Wichmann-Kroll contribution represented in terms of matrix elements similarly to the self-energy part. Performance of the method is studied by comparing the model-QED-operator predictions with the results of ab initio calculations. The model-QED operator can be conveniently incorporated in any numerical approach based on the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian to account for the QED effects in a wide variety of superheavy elements.

Relativistic calculations of the electronic structure of the superheavy element of the eighth period $-$ eka-francium ($Z=119$) and its homologues, which form the group of alkali metals, are performed in the framework of the configuration-interaction method and many-body perturbation theory using the basis of the Dirac-Fock-Sturm orbitals (DFS). The obtained values of the ionization potentials, electron affinities, and root-mean-square radii are compared with the corresponding values calculated within the non-relativistic approximation. A comparison with the available experimental data and the results of previous theoretical calculations is given as well. The analysis of the obtained results indicates a significant influence of the relativistic effects for the francium and eka-francium atoms, which leads to a violation of the monotonic behaviour of the listed above chemical properties as a function of the alkaline-element atomic number. In addition, the quantum electrodynamics corrections to the ionization potentials are evaluated by employing the model Lamb-shift operator (QEDMOD).

The strong mixing of close levels with two valence electrons in Be-like xenon greatly complicates ab initio QED calculations beyond the first-order approximation. Due to a strong interplay between the electron-electron correlation and QED effects, the standard single-level perturbative QED approach may fail, even if it takes into account the second-order screened QED diagrams. In the present Letter, the corresponding obstacles are overcome by working out the QED perturbation theory for quasidegenerate states. The contributions of all the Feynman diagrams up to the second order are taken into account. The many-electron QED effects are rigorously evaluated in the framework of the extended Furry picture to all orders in the nuclear-strength parameter $αZ$. The higher-order electron-correlation effects are considered within the Breit approximation. The nuclear recoil effect is accounted for as well. The developed approach is applied to high-precision QED calculations of the ground and singly excited energy levels in Be-like xenon. The most accurate theoretical predictions for the binding and excitation energies are obtained. These results deviate from the most precise experimental value by $3σ$ but perfectly agree with a more recent measurement.

Later, it was reported by [Volotka ${\it et \, al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 100}$, 010502(R) (2019)] that {\it ab initio} QED calculation, including the first-order one-electron QED contributions and the related effects of two-electron screening, yields the result which restores the agreement between theory and experiment and strongly disagrees with the model-potential Lamb shift values. In the present paper, the model Lamb shift operator [Shabaev ${\it et \, al.}$, Phys. Rev. A ${\bf 88}$, 012513 (2013)] is used to evaluate the QED effects on the $^2P_{1/2}-{}^2P_{3/2}$ fine structure in F-like ions. The calculations are performed by incorporating this operator into the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit equation employing different methods. It is demonstrated that the methods, based on including the Lamb shift operator either into the Dirac-Fock equations or into the calculations by perturbation theory, lead to the theoretical results which are in good agreement with each other and with experiment. The restriction of these results to the first order in the QED effects leads to a value which agrees with the aforementioned ${\it ab\, initio}$ QED result.

Fully relativistic approach is applied to evaluation of the nuclear recoil effect on the bound-electron $g$ factor in hydrogenlike ions to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio $m/M$ and to all orders in $αZ$. The calculations are performed in the range $1 \leqslant Z \leqslant 20$ for the $g$ factors of $1s$, $2s$, $2p_{1/2}$, and $2p_{3/2}$ states. The $αZ$-dependence of the nontrivial QED recoil contribution as a function of $Z$ is studied.

We conduct a theoretical study of the nonlinear optical response of a two-dimensional semi-conductor quantum dot supercrystal subjected to a quasi-resonant continuous wave excitation. Aconstituent quantum dot is odeled as a three-level ladder-like system (comprising the ground, theone-exciton, and the bi-exction states). To study the stationary response of the supercrystal, wepropose an exact linear parametric method of solving the nonlinear steady-state problem, whileto address the supercrystal optical dynamics qualitatively, we put forward a novel method to cal-culate the bifurcation diagram of the system. Analyzing the dynamics, we demonstrate that thesupercrystal can exhibit multistability, periodic and aperiodic self-oscillations, and chaotic behavior, depending on parameters of the supercrystal and excitation conditions. The effects originate fromthe interplay of the intrinsic nonlinearity of quantum dots and the retarded inter-dot dipole-dipoleinteraction. The latter provides a positive feedback which results in the exotic supercrystal opticaldynamics. These peculiarities of the supercrystal optical response open up a possibility for all-opticalapplications and devices. In particular, an all-optical switch, a tunable generator of THz pulses (inself-oscillating regime), a noise generator (in chaotic regime), and a tunable bistable mirror can bedesigned.

The current status of tests of quantum electrodynamics with heavy ions is reviewed. The theoretical predictions for the Lamb shift and the hyperfine splitting in heavy ions are compared with available experimental data. Recent achievements and future prospects in studies of the $g$ factor with highly charged ions are also reported. These studies can provide precise determination of the fundamental constants and tests of QED within and beyond the Furry picture at the strong-coupling regime. Theoretical calculations of the electron-positron pair creation probabilities in low-energy heavy-ion collisions are also considered. Special attention is paid to tests of QED in supercritical-field regime, which can be accessed in slow collisions of two bare nuclei with the total charge number larger than the critical value, $Z_{\rm crit} \approx 173$. In the supercritical field, the initially neutral vacuum can spontaneously decay into the charged vacuum and two positrons. It is demonstrated that this fundamental phenomenon can be observed via impact-sensitive measurements of the pair-production probabilities.

The interelectronic-interaction contributions of first and second orders in $1/Z$ are treated rigorously within the framework of bound-state quantum electrodynamics, whereas the calculations of the third- and higher-order contributions are based on the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian. The developed approach allows one to deal with single as well as degenerate or quasi-degenerate states. We apply this approach to the calculations of the correlation contributions to the $n=1$ and $n=2$ energy levels in heliumlike ions. The obtained contributions are combined with the one-electron and screened QED corrections, nuclear recoil and nuclear polarization corrections to get the total theoretical predictions for the ionization and transition energies in high-$Z$ heliumlike ions.

Ground-state energies of the one- and two-electron uranium dimers are calculated for internuclear distances in the range D=40--1000 fm and compared with the previous calculations. The generalization of the dual-kinetic-balance approach for axially symmetric systems is employed to solve the two-center Dirac equation without the partial-wave expansion for the potential of two nuclei. The one-electron one-loop QED contributions (self-energy and vacuum polarization) to the ground-state energy are evaluated using the monopole approximation for the two-center potential. Interelectronic interaction of the first and second order is taken into account for the two-electron quasimolecule. Within the QED approach one-photon-exchange contribution is calculated in the two-center potential, while the two-photon-exchange contribution is treated in the monopole approximation.

We study theoretically the nonlinear optical response of a two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dot supercrystal under a resonant continuous wave excitation. A single quantum dot is modeled as a three-level ladder-like system with the ground, one-exciton, and bi-exction states. We propose an exact linear parametric method of solving the nonlinear steady-state problem. It is demonstrate that the system may exhibit multistability, periodic and aperiodic self-oscillations, and hyperchaotic behavior, depending on the system's parameters and frequency of excitation. The effects originate from the retarded dipole-dipole interaction of quantum dots. The latter provides a positive feedback which, in combination with the nonlinearity of SQDs, leads to an exotic nonlinear dynamics of the system indicated above. We discuss relevance of the underlined effects for nanosized all-optical devices. In particular, a quantum dot supercrystal may serve as a nanosized all-optical switch, a tunable generator of trains of THz pulses (in self-oscillating regime), as well as a noise generator (in chaotic regime) at the nanoscale. We show also that the supercrystal can operate as a bistable mirror. All this suggests various nanophotonic applications of such type of materials.

Various charge migration mechanisms in the DNA are studied within the framework of the Peyrard-Bishop-Holstein model which has been widely used to address charge dynamics in this macromolecule. To analyze these mechanisms we consider characteristic size and time scales of the fluctuations of the electronic and vibrational subsystems. It is shown, in particular, that due to substantial differences in these timescales polaron formation is unlikely within a broad range of temperatures. We demonstrate that at low temperatures electronic transport can be quasi-ballistic. For high temperatures, we propose an alternative to polaronic charge migration mechanism: the fluctuation-assisted one, in which the electron dynamics is governed by relatively slow fluctuations of the vibrational subsystem. We argue also that the discussed methods and mechanisms can be relevant for other organic macromolecular systems, such as conjugated polymers and molecular aggregates.

The nuclear recoil effect on the $g$ factor of H- and Li-like heavy ions is evaluated to all orders in $αZ$. As the result, the second largest contribution to the theoretical uncertainty of the $g$-factor values of $^{208}$Pb$^{79+}$ and $^{238}$U$^{89+}$ is strongly reduced. Special attention is paid to tests of the QED recoil effect on the $g$ factor in experiments with heavy ions. It is found that, while the QED recoil effect on the $g$-factor value is masked by the uncertainties of the nuclear size and nuclear polarization contributions, it can be probed on a few-percent level in the specific difference of the $g$ factors of H- and Li-like heavy ions. This provides a unique opportunity to test QED in a new region --- strong-coupling regime beyond the Furry picture.

The calculations merge the ab initio QED treatment in the first and second orders of the perturbation theory in the fine-structure constant $α$ with the third- and higher-order electron-correlation contributions evaluated within the Breit approximation. The nuclear recoil and nuclear polarization effects are taken into account. The accuracy of the ionization energies obtained has been significantly improved in comparison with previous calculations.

Abstract:
Ab initio QED calculations of the ground-state binding energies of berylliumlike ions are performed for the wide range of the nuclear charge number: Z=18-96. The calculations are carried out in the framework of the extended Furry picture starting with three different types of the screening potential. Ab initio QED calculations of the ground-state binding energies of berylliumlike ions are performed for the wide range of the nuclear charge number: Z=18-96. The calculations are carried out in the framework of the extended Furry picture starting with three different types of the screening potential. The rigorous QED calculations up to the second order of the perturbation theory are combined with the third- and higher-order electron-correlation contributions obtained within the Breit approximation by the use of the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. The effects of nuclear recoil and nuclear polarization are taken into account. The ionization potentials are obtained by subtracting the binding energies of the corresponding lithiumlike ions. In comparison with the previous calculations the accuracy of the binding energies and the ionization potentials is significantly improved.

On the resonant optical bistability condition
Authors:
A. V. Malyshev
Abstract:
We address a two level system in an environment interacting with the electromagnetic field in the dipole approximation. The resonant optical bistability induced by local-field effects is studied by considering the relationship between the population difference and the excitation field. The diversity of various systems is included by accounting for the system self-action via the surface part of the…

We address a two level system in an environment interacting with the electromagnetic field in the dipole approximation. The resonant optical bistability induced by local-field effects is studied by considering the relationship between the population difference and the excitation field. The diversity of various systems is included by accounting for the system self-action via the surface part of the Green's dyadic in the general form. The bistability condition and the exact solution of the steady state optical Bloch equations at the absolute bistability threshold are derived analytically.

Abstract:
We show that interference can be the principle of operation of an all-optical switch and other nanoscale plasmonic interference devices (PIDs). The optical response of two types of planar plasmonic waveguides is studied theoretically: bent chains and Y-shaped configurations of closely-spaced metallic nanospheres. The optical response of two types of planar plasmonic waveguides is studied theoretically: bent chains and Y-shaped configurations of closely-spaced metallic nanospheres. We study symmetric Y-shape arrays as an example of an all-optical switch and demonstrate that effective phase- and amplitude-sensitive control of the output signal can be achieved due to interference effects.

Abstract:
Optical response of an artificial composite nano-dimer comprising a semiconductor quantum dot and a metal nanosphere is analyzed theoretically. We show that internal degrees of freedom of the system can manifest bistability and optical hysteresis as functions of the incident field intensity. We argue that these effects can be observed for the real world systems, such as a CdSe quantum dot and an A…

Optical response of an artificial composite nano-dimer comprising a semiconductor quantum dot and a metal nanosphere is analyzed theoretically. We show that internal degrees of freedom of the system can manifest bistability and optical hysteresis as functions of the incident field intensity. We argue that these effects can be observed for the real world systems, such as a CdSe quantum dot and an Au nanoparticle hybrids. These properties can be revealed by measuring the optical hysteresis of the Rayleigh scattering. We show also that the total dipole moment of the system can be switched abruptly between its two stable states by small changes in the excitation intensity. The latter promises various applications in the field of all-optical processing at nanoscale, the most underlying of them being the volatile optical memory.
