This paper introduces the Oilfield Pollutant Graphical Model (OPGM), an innovative approach designed to improve the benchmarking and uncertainty analysis of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in oilfields. Building on the robust foundation provided by the Oil Production Greenhouse Gas Emission Estimator (OPGEE) framework, OPGM retains all essential functionalities of the latest OPGEE iteration (v3.0c), while offering substantial improvements in user experience and computational performance. Key advances of OPGM include a streamlined user interface for more intuitive interaction, which facilitates transparent visualization of intermediate results and thus contributes to a more interpretable and accessible analysis process. A notable feature of the OPGM is its ability to naturally perform sensitivity analyzes. This is achieved by allowing users to seamlessly transition nodes from deterministic to probabilistic, thereby integrating uncertainty directly into the core structure of the model. OPGM achieves remarkable computational efficiency, executing analyzes at a speed 1e+5 times faster than the Excel-based OPGEE, thus facilitating rapid large-scale emissions assessments. This leap in processing speed represents a significant step forward in emissions modeling, enabling more agile and accurate environmental impact assessments. The integration of OPGM into existing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) practices holds the promise of significantly improving the precision and speed of environmental impact analyses, offering a vital tool for policymakers and industry stakeholders in their efforts to better understand and manage the environmental impacts of oilfield operations.

Multiscale non-equilibrium physics at large variations of local Knudsen number are encountered in applications of aerospace engineering and micro-electro-mechanical systems, such as high-speed flying vehicles and low pressure of the encapsulation. An accurate description of flow physics in all flow regimes within a single computation requires a genuinely multiscale method. The adaptive unified gas-kinetic scheme (AUGKS) is developed for such multiscale flow simulation. The AUGKS applies discretized velocity space to accurately capture the non-equilibrium physics in the multiscale UGKS, and adaptively employs continuous distribution functions following Chapman-Enskog expansion to efficiently recover near-equilibrium flow region in GKS. The UGKS and GKS are dynamically connected at the cell interface through the fluxes from the discretized and continuous gas distribution functions, which avoids any buffer zone between them. In this study, the AUGKS method with rotation and vibration non-equilibrium is developed. The real gas effect in different flow regimes has been captured. To capture aerodynamic heating accurately, the heat flux modifications are also included. Unstructured discrete particle velocity space is adopted to further improve the computational performance. Numerical tests, including Sod tube, normal shock structure, high-speed flow around the two-dimensional cylinder and three-dimensional sphere and space vehicles, and an unsteady nozzle plume flow from the continuum flow to the background vacuum, have been conducted to validate the current scheme. In comparison with the original UGKS, the current scheme speeds up the computation, reduces the memory requirement, and maintains the equivalent accuracy for multiscale flow simulation, which provides an effective tool for non-equilibrium flow simulations, especially for the flows at low and medium speed.

Nonequilibrium flows are common in aerospace engineering, and numerical simulations are vital in understanding non-equilibrium flow dynamics in spacecraft flight. The unified gas-kinetic wave-particle (UGKWP) method has been developed for multi-scale flow simulation, which models the coupled particle transport and collision within a numerical time in the flux evaluation across a cell interface. The UGKWP balances precision and efficiency in multiscale flow simulations, particularly in high-speed flow. In this study, the UGKWP method is used to simulate supersonic flow around a sphere, hypersonic flow around a space vehicle, nozzle plume into a vacuum, and side-jet im**ement on hypersonic flow. The UGKWP accurately renders the Navier-Stokes solution within the nozzle, extending to free molecular flow in the external environment, all within a singular computation. Complicated structures in flow interaction have been captured by the UGKWP method. All simulation results have been verified through experimental measurements or Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) methods. The UGKWP method requires only 60 GiB of memory to simulate a three-dimensional space vehicle with 560593 cells under different flow conditions, making it efficient and accurate for aerospace engineering applications.

Beam combination with high efficiency is desirable to overcome the power limit of single electromagnetic sources, enabling long-distance optical communication and high-power laser. The efficiency of coherent beam combination is severely limited by the phase correlation between different input light beams. Here, we theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated a new mechanism for beam combining, the topology-enabled beam combination (TEBC), from multiple spatial channels with high efficiency based on a unidirectional topological edge state. We show that the topologically protected power orthogonal excitation arising from both the unidirectional edge states and the energy conservation ensures -0.31dB (93%) efficiency experimentally for a multi-channel combination of coherent microwaves at 9.1-9.3 GHz. Moreover, we demonstrate broadband, phase insensitive, and high-efficiency beam combination using the TEBC mechanism with one single topological photonic crystal device, which significantly reduces the device footprint and design complexity. Our scheme transcends the limits of the required phase correlations in the scenario of coherent beam combination and the number of combined channels in the scenario of incoherent beam combination.

Reservoir simulations are computationally expensive in the well control and well placement optimization. Generally, numerous simulation runs (realizations) are needed in order to achieve the optimal well locations. In this paper, we propose a graph neural network (GNN) framework to build a surrogate feed-forward model which replaces simulation runs to accelerate the optimization process. Our GNN framework includes an encoder, a process, and a decoder which takes input from the processed graph data designed and generated from the simulation raw data. We train the GNN model with 6000 samples (equivalent to 40 well configurations) with each containing the previous step state variable and the next step state variable. We test the GNN model with another 6000 samples and after model tuning, both one-step prediction and rollout prediction achieve a close match with the simulation results. Our GNN framework shows great potential in the application of well-related subsurface optimization including oil and gas as well as carbon capture sequestration (CCS).

The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. Finally, the test facilities, the test methods and results of SiPMs in the cameras are reported here.

There are various types of pyramid schemes which have inflicted or are inflicting losses on many people in the world. We propose a pyramid scheme model which has the principal characters of many pyramid schemes appeared in recent years: promising high returns, rewarding the participants recruiting the next generation of participants, and the organizer will take all the money away when he finds the money from the new participants is not enough to pay the previous participants interest and rewards. We assume the pyramid scheme carries on in the tree network, ER random network, SW small-world network or BA scale-free network respectively, then give the analytical results of how many generations the pyramid scheme can last in these cases. We also use our model to analyse a pyramid scheme in the real world and we find the connections between participants in the pyramid scheme may constitute a SW small-world network.

Ionizing radiation (gamma and x-ray) is widely used in industry and medicine, but it can also pose a significant hazardous effect on health and induce cancer, physical deformity and even death, due to DNA damages and invasion of free radicals. There is therefore an urgent unmet demand in designing highly efficient radioprotectants with synergetic integration of effective renal clearance and low toxicity. In this study, we designed ultrasmall (sub-5 nm) highly catalytically active and cysteine-protected MoS2 dots as radioprotectants and investigated their application in protection against ionizing radiation. In vivo preclinical studies showed that the surviving fraction of MoS2-treated mice can appreciably increase to up to 79 % when they were exposed to high-energy ionizing radiation. Furthermore, MoS2 dots can contribute in cleaning up the accumulated free radicals within the body, repairing DNA damages and recovering all vital chemical and biochemical indicators, suggesting their unique role as free radical scavengers. MoS2 dots showed rapid and efficient urinary excretion with more than 80 % injected dose (I.D.) eliminated from the body after 24 hours due to their ultrasmall hydrodynamic size and did not cause any noticeable toxic responses up to 30 days.

Ultrasmall gold nanoclusters show great potential in biomedical applications. Long term biodistribution, retention, toxicity, and pharmacokinetics profiles are prerequisites in their potential clinical applications. Here we systematically investigated the biodistribution, clearance, and toxicity of one widely used Au NC species glutathione protected Au NCs or GSH Au NCs, over a relatively long period of 90 days in mice. We observed that most of the Au NCs were cleared at 30 days post injection with a major accumulation in liver and kidney. However, it is surprising that an abnormal increase of Au amount in the heart, liver, spleen, lung, and testis was observed at 60 and 90 days, indicating that the injected Au NCs formed a V shaped time dependent distribution profile in various organs. Further investigations revealed that Au NCs were steadily accumulating in the muscle in the first 30 days p.i., and the as stored Au NCs gradually released into blood in 30 to 90 days, which induced a redistribution and reaccumulation of Au NCs in all blood rich organs. Further hematology and biochemistry studies showed that the reaccumulation of Au NCs still caused some liver toxicity at 30 days p.i. The muscle storage and subsequent release may give rise to the potential accumulation and toxicity risk of functional nanomaterials over long periods of time.

In positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, statistical iterative reconstruction (IR) techniques appear particularly promising since they can provide accurate system model. The system model matrix which describes the relationship between image space and projection space is important to the image quality. It contains some factors such as geometrical component and blurring component. The blurring component is usually described by point spread function (PSF). A PSF matrix derived from the single photon incidence response function is studied. And then an IR method based on the system matrix containing the PSF is developed. More specifically, the gamma photon incidence on a crystal array is simulated by Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, and then the single photon incidence response functions are calculated. Subsequently, the single photon incidence response functions is used to compute the coincidence blurring factor according to the physical process of PET coincidence detection. Through weighting the ordinary system matrix response by the coincidence blurring factors, the IR system matrix containing PSF is finally established. Using this system matrix, the image is reconstructed by ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed system matrix can obviously improve the image radial resolution, contrast and noise property. Furthermore, the simulated single gamma-ray incidence response function only depends on the crystal configuration, so the method could be extended to any PET scanners with the same detector crystal configuration.

Bi, a high atom number element, has a high photoelectric absorption coefficient, and Se element has anticancer activity. Hence, their compound chalcogenide (Bi2Se3) deserves a thorough investigation for biomedical applications. This study reveals that Bi2Se3 nanoplates (54 nm wide) protected with poly(vinylpyrollidone) (PVP) are biocompatible and have low toxicity even at a high dose of 20 mg/kg in mice. This conclusion was made through the studies on the biodistribution and 90-day long term in vivo clearance of the nanoplates. Liver and spleen were dominant organs for the nanoplates accumulation which was mainly due to RES absorption, but 93 % the nanoplates were cleared after 90 days treatment. Concentrations of Bi and Se in tumor tissue continuously increased until 72 h after intraperitoneal injection into mice. Such selective accumulation of Bi was utilized to enhance the contrast of X-ray CT images. The Bi elements concentrated in a tumor led to damage on the tumor cells when exposed to gamma radiation. Growth of the tumor significantly delayed and stopped after 16 days after the tumor was treated with the Bi2Se3 nanoplates and radiation. This work clearly shows that the Bi2Se3 nanoplates may be used for cancer radiation therapy and CT imaging. They deserve further studies for biological and medical applications.

Guiding by the relativistic local density approximation, we explore a phenomenological formula for the coupling strength of Coulomb field to take into account the Coulomb exchange term effectively in the relativistic Hartree approximation. Its validity in finite nuclei is examined by comparing with the exact treatment of the Coulomb exchange energies in the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach. It is found that the exact Coulomb exchange energies can be reproduced by employing the phenomenological formula with the relative deviations less than 1% for semi-magic Ca, Ni, Sn, and Pb isotopes. Furthermore, we check the applicability of the phenomenological formula for the effective interactions in the relativistic Hartree approach by investigating the binding energy differences of mirror nuclei.

Radiation dose is an important performance indicator of a dedicated breast CT (DBCT). In this paper, the method of putting thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) into a breast shaped PMMA phantom to study the dose distribution in breasts was improved by using smaller TLDs and a new half-ellipsoid PMMA phantom. Then the weighted CT dose index (CTDIw) was introduced to average glandular assessment in DBCT for the first time and two measurement modes were proposed for different sizes of breasts. The dose deviations caused by using cylindrical phantoms were simulated using the Monte Carlo method and a set of correction factors were calculated. The results of the confirmatory measurement with a cylindrical phantom (11cm/8cm) show that CTDIw gives a relatively conservative overestimate of the average glandular dose comparing to the results of Monte Carlo simulation and TLDs measurement. But with better practicability and stability, the CTDIw is suitable for dose evaluations in daily clinical practice. Both of the TLDs and CTDIw measurements demonstrate that the radiation dose of our DBCT system is lower than conventional two-view mammography.

We present a new pseudospectral approach for incorporating many-body, nonlocal exact exchange interactions to understand the formation of electron gases in core-shell nanowires. Our approach is efficiently implemented in the open-source software package PAMELA (Pseudospectral Analysis Method with Exchange & Local Approximations) that can calculate electronic energies, densities, wavefunctions, and band-bending diagrams within a self-consistent Schrodinger-Poisson formalism. The implementation of both local and nonlocal electronic effects using pseudospectral methods is key to PAMELA's efficiency, resulting in significantly reduced computational effort compared to finite-element methods. In contrast to the new nonlocal exchange formalism implemented in this work, we find that the simple, conventional Schrodinger-Poisson approaches commonly used in the literature (1) considerably overestimate the number of occupied electron levels, (2) overdelocalize electrons in nanowires, and (3) significantly underestimate the relative energy separation between electronic subbands. In addition, we perform several calculations in the high-do** regime that show a critical tunneling depth exists in these nanosystems where tunneling from the core-shell interface to the nanowire edge becomes the dominant mechanism of electron gas formation. Finally, in order to present a general-purpose set of tools that both experimentalists and theorists can easily use to predict electron gas formation in core-shell nanowires, we document and provide our efficient and user-friendly PAMELA source code that is freely available at http://alum.mit.edu/www/usagi

Saturn is a dual-purpose accelerator. It can be operated as a large-area flash x-ray source for simulation testing or as a Z-pinch driver especially for K-line x-ray production. In the first mode, the accelerator is fitted with three concentric-ring 2-MV electron diodes, while in the Z-pinch mode the current of all the modules is combined via a post-hole convolute arrangement and driven through a cylindrical array of very fine wires. We present here a point design for a new Saturn class driver based on a number of linear inductive voltage adders connected in parallel. A technology recently implemented at the Institute of High Current Electronics in Tomsk (Russia) is being utilized[1].
In the present design we eliminate Marx generators and pulse-forming networks. Each inductive voltage adder cavity is directly fed by a number of fast 100-kV small-size capacitors arranged in a circular array around each accelerating gap. The number of capacitors connected in parallel to each cavity defines the total maximum current. By selecting low inductance switches, voltage pulses as short as 30-50-ns FWHM can be directly achieved.
