Neighborhoods and Boundaries of Urban Mobility

Here, we present a methodological framework to assess the importance of barriers to urban mobility along their hierarchy, over time and across neighborhoods. Using GPS mobility data, we construct a network of blocks from the sequence of individual visits. A community finding algorithm allows us to evaluate the fit of the neighborhoods detected in this mobility network to characteristic urban barriers by adjusting the resolution parameter of the Louvain method to decrease the dominance of mobility hubs. Using the Symmetric Area Difference index, that quantifies the overlap between the polygons separated by urban barriers and the network communities, we find that the match of detected neighborhoods and urban barriers improves as the resolution parameter increases. However, at high values of the resolution parameter, this fit gets better for lower rank administrative or road barriers than for their higher rank pairs. Although the role of urban barriers in hindering mobility became stronger over the COVID-19 restrictions, their fit with detected neighborhoods deteriorated for most analyzed barriers. Exceptions are primary roads, to which the fit of neighborhoods is stable over periods. By increasing the resolution parameter, we find emergent communities of local mobility flows that cross primary roads and a consequent optimal value of the resolution parameter. The Barrier Crossing Ratio, the fraction of barrier crossings that are network community crossings as well, demonstrates that the barriers' impact on mobility are significantly different across urban areas. These results contribute to the ongoing discourse on urban segregation, emphasizing the importance of barriers to urban mobility in sha** neighborhood interactions and mixing. △ Less

Antidepressant use and spatial social capital

Most empirical work based on small-scale surveys finds that bonding social capital and cohesive social networks are critical for mental well-being, while bridging social capital and diverse networks are considered less important. Here, we link data on antidepressant use of 277,344 small-town residents to a nation-wide online social network. The data enable us to examine how individuals' mental healthcare is related to the spatial characteristics of their social networks including their strong and weak ties. We find that, besides the cohesion of social networks around home, the diversity of connections to distant places is negatively correlated with the probability of antidepressant use. Spatial diversity of social networks is also associated with decreasing dosage in subsequent years. This relationship is independent from the local access to antidepressants and is more prevalent for young individuals. Structural features of spatial social networks are prospectively associated with depression treatment. △ Less

Amenity complexity and urban locations of socio-economic mixing

In this study, we adopt the concept of economic complexity to quantify the sophistication of amenity supply at urban locations. We propose that neighborhood complexity and amenity complexity are connected to the ability of locations to attract diverse visitors from various socio-economic backgrounds across the city. We construct the measures of amenity complexity based on the local portfolio of diverse and non-ubiquitous amenities in Budapest, Hungary. Socio-economic mixing at visited third places is investigated by tracing the daily mobility of individuals and by characterizing their status by the real-estate price of their home locations. Results suggest that measures of ubiquity and diversity of amenities do not, but neighborhood complexity and amenity complexity are correlated with the urban centrality of locations. Urban centrality is a strong predictor of socio-economic mixing, but both neighborhood complexity and amenity complexity add further explanatory power to our models. Our work combines urban mobility data with economic complexity thinking to show that the diversity of non-ubiquitous amenities, central locations, and the potentials for socio-economic mixing are interrelated. △ Less

Understanding European Integration with Bipartite Networks of Comparative Advantage

We develop a bipartite network approach to trace pairwise co-specialization, by applying the Revealed Comparative Advantage method, within and between EU15 and Central and Eastern European (CEE). This approach assesses redundancies and division of labor in the EU at the level of industries and countries. We find significant co-specialization among CEE countries but a diverging specialization between EU15 and CEE. Productivity increases in those CEE industries that have co-specialized with other CEE countries after EU accession, while co-specialization across CEE and EU15 countries is less related to productivity growth. These results show that a division of sectoral specialization can lead to productivity convergence between EU15 and CEE countries. △ Less

Understanding hesitancy with revealed preferences across COVID-19 vaccine types

This abundance and variety of vaccines created a historical moment to understand vaccine hesitancy better. Never before were more types of vaccines available for an illness and the intensity of vaccine-related public discourse is unprecedented. Yet, the heterogeneity of hesitancy by vaccine types has been neglected so far, even though factual or believed vaccine characteristics and patient attributes are known to influence acceptance. We address this problem by analysing acceptance and assessment of five vaccine types using information collected with a nationally representative survey at the end of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Hungary, where a unique portfolio of vaccines were available to the public in large quantities. Our special case enables us to quantify revealed preferences across vaccine types since one could evaluate a vaccine unacceptable and even could reject an assigned vaccine to wait for another type. We find that the source of information that respondents trust characterizes their attitudes towards vaccine types differently and leads to divergent vaccine hesitancy. Believers of conspiracy theories were significantly more likely to evaluate the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) unacceptable while those who follow the advice of politicians evaluate vector-based (AstraZeneca and Sputnik) or whole-virus vaccines (Sinopharm) acceptable with higher likelihood. We illustrate that the rejection of non-desired and re-selection of preferred vaccines fragments the population by the mRNA versus other type of vaccines while it generally improves the assessment of the received vaccine. These results highlight that greater variance of available vaccine types and individual free choice are desirable conditions that can widen the acceptance of vaccines in societies. △ Less

Spatially concentrated social capital of urban residents

This paper demonstrates that the social capital measured on social networks is spatially more concentrated for residents of lower-income neighborhoods than for residents of higher-income neighborhoods. We map the micro-geography of individual online social connections in the 50 largest metropolitan areas of the US using a large-scale geolocalized Twitter dataset. We then analyze the spatial dimension of individual social capital by the share of friends, closure, and share of supported ties within circles of short distance radiuses (1, 5, and 10~km) around users' home location. We compare residents from below-median income neighborhoods with above-median income neighborhoods, and find that users living in relatively poorer neighborhoods have a significantly higher share of connections in close proximity. Moreover, their network is more cohesive and supported within a short distance from their home. These patterns prevail across the 50 largest US metropolitan areas with only a few exceptions. The found disparities in the micro-geographic concentration of social capital can feed segregation and income inequality within cities harming social circles of low-income residents. △ Less

Urban hierarchy and spatial diffusion over the innovation life cycle

For decades, spatial diffusion has been argued to take place along the urban hierarchy such that the innovation first spreads from large to medium cities then later from medium to small cities. Yet, the role of geographical distance, the other major factor of spatial diffusion, was difficult to identify in hierarchical diffusion due to missing data on spreading events. In this paper, we exploit spatial patterns of individual invitations on a social media platform sent from registered users to new users over the entire life cycle of the platform. This enables us to disentangle the role of urban hierarchy and the role of distance by observing the source and target locations of flows over an unprecedented timescale. We demonstrate that hierarchical diffusion greatly overlaps with diffusion to close distances and these factors co-evolve over the life cycle; thus, their joint analysis is necessary. Then, a regression framework is applied to estimate the number of invitations sent between pairs of towns by years in the life cycle with the population sizes of the source and target towns, their combinations, and the distance between them. We confirm that hierarchical diffusion prevails initially across large towns only but emerges in the full spectrum of settlements in the middle of the life cycle when adoption accelerates. Unlike in previous gravity estimations, we find that after an intensifying role of distance in the middle of the life cycle a surprisingly weak distance effect characterizes the last years of diffusion. Our results stress the dominance of urban hierarchy in spatial diffusion and inform future predictions of innovation adoption at local scales. △ Less

Universal role of commuting in the reduction of social assortativity in cities

In this paper, we aim to better understand income sorting in social networks inside cities and investigate how commuting distance conditions the online social ties of Twitter users in the 50 largest metropolitan areas of the United States. Home and work locations are identified from geolocated tweets that enable us to infer the socio-economic status of individuals. Our results show that an above-median commuting distance in cities is associated with more diverse individual networks in terms of connected peers and their income. The degree that distant commutes link neighborhoods of different socio-economic backgrounds greatly varies by city size and structure. However, we find that above-median commutes are associated with a nearly uniform, moderate reduction of social tie assortativity across the top 50 US cities suggesting a universal role of commuting in integrating disparate social networks in cities. Our results inform policy that facilitating access across distant neighborhoods can advance the social inclusion of low-income groups. △ Less

Vaccine allocation to blue-collar workers

The central problem is to use the limited number of vaccines in a country to reduce the risk of infection and mitigate economic uncertainty at the same time. In this paper, we propose a simple economic model for vaccine allocation across two types of workers: white-collars can work from home; while blue-collars must work on site. These worker types are complementary to each other, thus a negative shock to the supply of either one decreases the demand for the other that leads to unemployment. Using parameters of blue and white-collar labor supply, their infection risks, productivity losses at home office during lock-down, and available vaccines, we express the optimal share of vaccines allocated to blue-collars. The model points to the dominance of blue-collar vaccination, especially during waves when their relative infection risks increase and when the number of available vaccines is limited. Taking labor supply data from 28 European countries, we quantify blue-collar vaccine allocation that minimizes unemployment across levels of blue- and white-collar infection risks. The model favours blue-collar vaccination identically across European countries in case of vaccine scarcity. As more vaccines become available, economies that host large-shares of employees in home-office shall increasingly immunize them in case blue-collar infection risks can be kept down. Our results highlight that vaccination plans should include workers and rank them by type of occupation. We propose that prioritizing blue-collar workers during infection waves and early vaccination can also favour economy besides hel** the most vulnerable who can transmit more infection. △ Less

In this paper we use big data from a widely-used online social network to demonstrate that there is a significant relationship between social network fragmentation and income inequality in cities and towns. We find that the organization of the physical urban space has a stronger relationship with fragmentation than unequal access to education, political segregation, or the presence of ethnic and religious minorities. Fragmentation of social networks is significantly higher in towns in which residential neighborhoods are divided by physical barriers such as rivers and railroads and are relatively distant from the center of town. Towns in which amenities are spatially concentrated are also typically more socially segregated. These relationships suggest how urban planning may be a useful point of intervention to mitigate inequalities in the long run. △ Less

Social capital predicts corruption risk in towns

Significant variation in its level between and within countries suggests a relationship between social structure and the prevalence of corruption, yet, large scale empirical studies thereof have been missing due to lack of data. In this paper we relate the structural characteristics of social capital of towns with corruption in their local governments. Using datasets from Hungary, we quantify corruption risk by suppressed competition and lack of transparency in the town's awarded public contracts. We characterize social capital using social network data from a popular online platform. Controlling for social, economic, and political factors, we find that settlements with fragmented social networks, indicating an excess of \textit{bonding social capital} have higher corruption risk and towns with more diverse external connectivity, suggesting a surplus of \textit{bridging social capital} are less exposed to corruption. We interpret fragmentation as fostering in-group favoritism and conformity, which increase corruption, while diversity facilitates impartiality in public life and stifles corruption. △ Less

In the spatial aspect of science of science, cities have been considered by their publication output or by their citation impact. In this visualization, we go beyond these well-known approaches and map international scientific collaboration patterns of the most prominent science hubs considering both the quantity and the impact of papers produced in the collaboration. The analysis involves 245 cities and the collaboration matrix contains a total number of 7,718 international collaboration links. Results show that US-Europe co-publication links are more efficient in terms of producing highly cited papers than those international links that Asian cities have built in scientific collaboration. △ Less

Inventor collaboration and its persistence across European regions

While remote partnerships are gaining importance; most R&D cooperations remain embedded in local environments and little is known about how spatial patterns of creation and persistence of ties in large-scale co-inventor networks differ. We use the publicly available OECD REGPAT database to construct a co-inventor network of the EU27 and continental EFTA countries from patents filed between 2006 and 2010, and identify those ties that had been persisted from before 2006. A community detection exercise reveals that persisted collaborations cluster at a smaller geographical scale than what is observed in the full network. We find that in general the estimated probability of persisted collaboration does not differ from the complete collaboration network when geographical distance, technological similarity or the number of common third partners across regions are assumed to influence tie probability separately. However, persistent collaboration gains exceptional likelihood if regions are proximate in all three dimensions. Our results therefore offer evidence that repeated inventor collaboration drives regional innovation systems towards isolation, which is a threat for European innovation policy. △ Less

The role of geography in the complex diffusion of innovations

Improved understanding of innovation diffusion across locations and through social connections can provide us with new insights into the spread of information, technological progress and economic development. In this work, we analyze the spatial adoption dynamics of iWiW, an Online Social Network (OSN) in Hungary and uncover empirical features about the spatial adoption in social networks. During its entire life cycle from 2002 to 2012, iWiW reached up to 300 million friendship ties of 3 million users. We find that the number of adopters as a function of town population follows a scaling law that reveals a strongly concentrated early adoption in large towns and a less concentrated late adoption. We also discover a strengthening distance decay of spread over the life-cycle indicating high fraction of distant diffusion in early stages but the dominance of local diffusion in late stages. The spreading process is modelled within the Bass diffusion framework that enables us to compare the differential equation version with an agent-based version of the model run on the empirical network. Although both models can capture the macro trend of adoption, they have limited capacity to describe the observed trends of urban scaling and distance decay. We find, however that incorporating adoption thresholds, defined by the fraction of social connections that adopt a technology before the individual adopts, improves the network model fit to the urban scaling of early adopters. Controlling for the threshold distribution enables us to eliminate the bias induced by local network structure on predicting local adoption peaks. Finally, we show that geographical features such as distance from the innovation origin and town size influence prediction of adoption peak at local scales. △ Less

Geographies of an online social network

Recent studies have shown that in spite of earlier visions about the "death of distance", physical proximity is still a major factor in social tie formation and maintenance in virtual social networks. Yet, it is unclear, what are the characteristics of the distance dependence in online social networks. In order to explore this issue the complete network of the former major Hungarian online social network is analyzed. We find that the distance dependence is weaker for the online social network ties than what was found earlier for phone communication networks. For a further analysis we introduced a coarser granularity: We identified the settlements with the nodes of a network and assigned two kinds of weights to the links between them. When the weights are proportional to the number of contacts we observed weakly formed, but spatially based modules resembling to the borders of macro-regions, the highest level of regional administration in the country. If the weights are defined relative to an uncorrelated null model, the next level of administrative regions, counties are reflected. △ Less

Regional innovation systems in Hungary: The failing synergy at the national level

Our results indicate that three regimes have been created during the Hungarian transition with very different dynamics: (1) Budapest and its agglomeration emerge as a knowledge-based innovation system on every indicator; (2) the north-western part of the country, where foreign-owned companies have induced a shift in knowledge-organization; while (3) the system in the eastern and southern part of the country seems to be organized as a response to government expenditure. The national level no longer adds to the synergy across these regional innovation systems. △ Less
