This work presents our theoretical study of the dissociative recombination (DR) of the closed-shell diatomic system CF$^+$ based on an approach recently applied to the CH$^+$ molecule. Our extended treatment uses the UK R-matrix theory and the multichannel quantum-defect theory procedure to uniformly resolve the direct and indirect mechanisms of DR while bypassing explicit dissociative state and electronic coupling calculations. The theoretical results exhibit good overall agreement with previous experimental measurements. At lower scattering energies, good agreement is found only if the rotational structure of the ion is included and the theoretical cross sections are averaged over initial rotational levels corresponding to the temperature at which the experimental measurements were made. At higher scattering energies, our rotationally resolved results are very similar to those obtained without including the ion's rotational structure.

It is a method based on two related approaches of multichannel quantum-defect theory. One is applying bound-state boundary conditions to closed-channel asymptotic solution matrices and the other is searching for resonance positions via eigenphase shift analysis. We apply the method to the CH molecule to produce dense potential-curve data sets presented as graphs and supplied as tables in the publication supplement.

Using a similar level of theory, the cross section for radiative electron attachment to the C$_3$N molecule, forming the dipole-bound states, was determined. The obtained cross section is too small to explain the formation of C$_3$N$^-$ in the interstellar medium, suggesting that it is likely formed by a different process.

The present theory is based on electron scattering calculations performed at several internuclear distances in the molecule. It is easy to implement becaus there is no need to separately evaluate couplings and the bound dissociative states of the neutral molecule. The theory can be applied to molecular ions with or without electronic resonances at low energies. The approach is applied to compute the DR cross section in electron-CH$^+$ collisions. The computed cross section agrees generally well with recent state-resolved data from a cryogenic storage-ring experiment, which validates the approach.

Absorbing UV radiation, ozone protects life on Earth and plays a fundamental role in Earth's temperature balance. The formation of ozone occurs through the ternary recombination reaction: O$_2$+O+M $\rightarrow$ O$_3$+M, where M can be N$_2$, O$_2$ or Ar. Here, we developed a theoretical approach capable of modeling the formation of ozone molecules in ternary collisions, and applied it to the reaction with M=Ar because of extensive experimental data available. The rate coefficients for the direct formation of O$_3$ in ternary collisions O+O$_2$+Ar were computed for the first time as a function of collision energy, and thermally-averaged coefficients were derived for temperatures 5-900~K leading to a good agreement with available experimental data for temperatures 100-900~K. The present study shows that the formation of ozone in ternary collisions O+O$_2$+Ar at temperatures below 200~K proceeds through a formation of a temporary complex ArO$_2$, while at temperatures above 1000~K, the reaction proceeds mainly through a formation of long-lived vibrational resonances of O$_3^*$. At intermediate temperatures 200~K-1000~K, the process cannot be viewed as a two-step mechanism. In addition, it is found that the majority of O$_3$ molecules formed initially are weakly bound.

Energies and lifetimes (widths) of vibrational states above the lowest dissociation limit of $^{16}$O$_3$ were determined using a previously-developed efficient approach, which combines hyperspherical coordinates and a complex absorbing potential. The calculations are based on a recently-computed potential energy surface of ozone determined with a spectroscopic accuracy [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 139}, 134307 (2013)]. The effect of permutational symmetry on rovibrational dynamics and the density of resonance states in O$_3$ is discussed in detail. Correspondence between quantum numbers appropriate for short- and long-range parts of wave functions of the rovibrational continuum is established. It is shown, by symmetry arguments, that the allowed purely vibrational ($J=0$) levels of $^{16}$O$_3$ and $^{18}$O$_3$, both made of bosons with zero nuclear spin, cannot dissociate on the ground state potential energy surface. Energies and wave functions of bound states of the ozone isotopologue $^{16}$O$_3$ with rotational angular momentum $J=0$ and 1 up to the dissociation threshold were also computed. For bound levels, good agreement with experimental energies is found: The RMS deviation between observed and calculated vibrational energies is 1~\cm. Rotational constants were determined and used for a simple identification of vibrational modes of calculated levels.

A first-principle theoretical approach to study the process of radiative electron attachment is developed and applied to the negative molecular ions CN$^-$, C$_4$H$^-$, and C$_2$H$^-$. Among these anions, the first two have already been observed in the interstellar space. Cross sections and rate coefficients for formation of these ions by radiative electron attachment to the corresponding neutral radicals are calculated. For completeness of the theoretical approach, two pathways for the process have been considered: (i) A direct pathway, in which the electron in collision with the molecule spontaneously emits a photon and forms a negative ion in one of the lowest vibrational levels, and (ii) an indirect, or two-step pathway, in which the electron is initially captured through non-Born-Oppenheimer coupling into a vibrationally resonant excited state of the anion, which then stabilizes by radiative decay. We develop a general model to describe the second pathway and show that its contribution to the formation of cosmic anions is small in comparison to the direct mechanism. The obtained rate coefficients at 30~K are $7\times 10^{-16}$cm$^3$/s for CN$^-$, $7\times 10^{-17}$cm$^3$/s for C$_2$H$^-$, and $2\times 10^{-16}$cm$^3$/s for C$_4$H$^-$. These rates weakly depend on temperature between 10K and 100 K. The validity of our calculations is verified by comparing the present theoretical results with data from recent photodetachment experiments.

Vibrational energies and wave functions of the triplet state of the H3+ ion have been determined. In the calculations, the ground and first excited triplet electronic states are included as well as the non-Born-Oppenheimer coupling between them. A diabatization procedure transforming the two adiabatic ab initio potential energy surfaces of the triplet-H3+ state into a 2x2 matrix is employed. The diabatization takes into account the non-Born-Oppenheimer coupling and the effect of the geometrical phase due to the conical intersection between the two adiabatic potential surfaces. The results are compared to the calculation involving only the lowest adiabatic potential energy surface of the triplet-H3+ ion and neglecting the geometrical phase. The energy difference between results with and without the non-adiabatic coupling and the geometrical phase is about a wave number for the lowest vibrational levels.

Numerical results are given for the long-range interaction between Cs and Cs$_2$, showing that the photoassociation is probably efficient whatever the Cs$_2$ rotational energy.

New high-resolution dissociative recombination rate coefficients of rotationally cool and hot H3+ in the vibrational ground state have been measured with a 22-pole trap setup and a Penning ion source, respectively, at the ion storage ring TSR. The experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations to explore the dependence of the rate coefficient on ion temperature and to study the contributions of different symmetries to probe the rich predicted resonance spectrum. The break-up energy was investigated by fragment imaging to derive internal temperatures of the stored parent ions under differing experimental conditions. A systematic experimental assessment of heating effects is performed which, together with a survey of other recent storage-ring data, suggests that the present rotationally cool rate-coefficient measurement was performed at 380^{+50}_{-130} K and that this is the lowest rotational temperature so far realized in storage-ring rate-coefficient measurements on H3+. This partially supports the theoretical suggestion that higher temperatures than assumed in earlier experiments are the main cause for the large gap between the experimental and theoretical rate coefficients. For the rotationally hot rate-coefficient measurement a temperature of below 3250K is derived. From these higher-temperature results it is found that increasing the rotational ion temperature in the calculations cannot fully close the gap between the theoretical and experimental rate coefficients.

With a specific choice of laser parameters resulting into a so-called exceptional point in the wavelength-intensity plane, it is possible to produce the coalescence of two Floquet resonances describing the photodissociation of the molecule Na$_2$, which is one of the candidates for molecular cooling. Appropriately tuning laser parameters, following a contour around the exceptional point, the resonances exchange their labels. This represents a laser control of the vibrational transfer from one field-free state to another, through an adiabatic transport involving these resonances. The proportion of undissociated molecules at the end of the pulse is checked through Floquet adiabatic theory. A vibrational cooling scenario can be proposed based on a complete vibrational transfer which is predicted, with only 20 percent of molecules undergoing dissociation.

The general formalism of the multipolar expansion of electrostatic interactions is applied to the calculation the potential energy between an excited atom (without fine structure) and a ground state diatomic molecule at large separations. Both partners exhibit a permanent quadrupole moment, so that their mutual quadrupole-quadrupole long-range interaction is attractive enough to bind trimers. Numerical results are given for an excited Cs(6P) atom and a ground state Cs2 molecule. The prospects for achieving photoassociation of a cold atom/dimer pair is thus discussed and found promising. We present theoretical thermally-averaged rate constants for vibrational and rotational (de-)excitation of the H3+ ion by electron impact. The constants are calculated using the multi-channel quantum-defect approach. The calculation includes processes that involve a change Delta J<=2 in the rotational angular momentum J of H3+. The rate constants are calculated for states with J<=5 for rotational transitions of the H3+ ground vibrational level. The thermal rates for transitions among the lowest eight vibrational levels are also presented, averaged over the rotational structure of the vibrational levels. The conditions for producing non-thermal rotational and vibrational distributions of H3+ in astrophysical environments are discussed.

By computing the electronic structure of the H$_3^-$ ion, we determine its dipole moment, bound states, rotational constants, predissociated vibrational resonances and their lifetimes, and suggest a way to detect the ion in the interstellar medium.

We study binary and the recently discovered process of ternary He-assisted recombination of H3+ ions with electrons in a low temperature afterglow plasma. The experiments are carried out over a broad range of pressures and temperatures of an afterglow plasma in a helium buffer gas. Binary and He-assisted ternary recombination are observed and the corresponding recombination rate coefficients are extracted for temperatures from 77 K to 330 K. We describe the observed ternary recombination as a two-step mechanism: First, a rotationally-excited long-lived neutral molecule H3* is formed in electron-H3+ collisions. Second, the H3* molecule collides with a helium atom that leads to the formation of a very long-lived Rydberg state with high orbital momentum. We present calculations of the lifetimes of H3* and of the ternary recombination rate coefficients for para and ortho-H3+. The calculations show a large difference between the ternary recombination rate coefficients of ortho- and para-H3+ at temperatures below 300 K. The measured binary and ternary rate coefficients are in reasonable agreement with the calculated values.

We discuss the role of the geometrical phase in predissociation dynamics of vibrational states near a conical intersection of two electronic potential surfaces of a D_{3h} molecule. For quantitative description of the predissociation driven by the coupling near a conical intersection, we developed a method for calculating lifetimes and positions of vibrational predissociated states (Feshbach resonances) for X_3 molecule. The method takes into account the two coupled three-body potential energy surfaces, which are degenerate at the intersection. As an example, we apply the method to obtain lifetimes and positions of resonances of predissociated vibrational levels of the 2^2 A' electronic state of the H_3 molecule. The three-body recombination rate coefficient for the H+H+H -> H_2+H process is estimated.

The article presents an improved theoretical description of dissociative recombination of HCO$^+$ and DCO$^+$ ions with a low energy electron. In the previous theoretical study (Phys. Rev. A {\bf 74}, 032707) on HCO$^+$, the vibrational motion along the CO coordinate was neglected. Here, all vibrational degrees of freedom, including the CO stretch coordinate, are taken into account. The theoretical dissociative recombination cross-section obtained is similar to the previous theoretical result at low collision energies ($<$0.1 eV) but somewhat larger at higher ($>$0.1 eV) energies. Therefore, the present study suggests that motion along the CO coordinate does not play a significant role in the process at low collision energies. The theoretical cross-section is still approximately 2-3 times lower than the data from a recent merged-beam experiment.

We discuss collision of three identical particles and derive scattering selection rules from initial to final states of the particles. We use either laboratory-frame, hyperspherical, or Jacobian coordinates depending on which one is best suited to describe three different configurations of the particles: (1) three free particles, (2) a quasi-bound trimer, or (3) a dimer and a free particle. We summarize quantum numbers conserved during the collision as well as quantum numbers that are appropriate for a given configuration but may change during the scattering process. The total symmetry of the system depends on these quantum numbers. Based on the selection rules, we construct correlation diagrams between different configurations before and after a collision. In particular, we describe a possible recombination of the system into one free particle and a dimer, which can be used, for example, to identify possible decay products of quasi-stationary three-body states

We suggest that the three-body recombination involves formation of highly excited Rydberg neutral H3 followed by an l- or m- changing collision with He. Plasma electron spectroscopy indicates the presence of H3.

The article presents calculated dissociative recombination (DR) rate coefficients for H+3 . The previous theoretical work on H+3 was performed using the adiabatic hyperspherical approximation to calculate the target ion vibrational states and it considered just a limited number of ionic rotational states. In this study, we use accurate vibrational wave functions and a larger number of possible rotational states of the H3+ ground vibrational level. The DR rate coefficient obtained is found to agree better with the experimental data from storage-ring experiments than the previous theoretical calculation. We present evidence that excited rotational states could be playing an important role in those experiments for collision energies above 10 meV. The DR rate coefficients calculated separately for ortho- and para-H3+ are predicted to differ significantly at low energy, a result consistent with a recent experiment. We also present DR rate coefficients for vibrationally-excited initial states of H3+, which are found to be somewhat larger than the rate coefficient for the ground vibrational level.

New cross sections for the rotational excitation of H$_3^+$ by electrons are calculated {\it ab initio} at low impact energies. The validity of the adiabatic-nuclei-rotation (ANR) approximation, combined with $R$-matrix wavefunctions, is assessed by comparison with rovibrational quantum defect theory calculations based on the treatment of Kokoouline and Greene ({\it Phys. Rev. A} {\bf 68} 012703 2003). Pure ANR excitation cross sections are shown to be accurate down to threshold, except in the presence of large oscillating Rydberg resonances. These resonances occur for transitions with $ΔJ=1$ and are caused by closed channel effects. A simple analytic formula is derived for averaging the rotational probabilities over such resonances in a 3-channel problem. In accord with the Wigner law for an attractive Coulomb field, rotational excitation cross sections are shown to be large and finite at threshold, with a significant but moderate contribution from closed channels.

We have developed a theoretical method for interpretation of photoionization experiments with the H_3 molecule. In the present study we give a detailed description of the method, which combines multichannel quantum defect theory, the adiabatic hyperspherical approach, and the techniques of outgoing Siegert pseudostates. The present method accounts for vibrational and rotation excitations of the molecule, deals with all symmetry restrictions imposed by the geometry of the molecule, including vibrational, rotational, electronic and nuclear spin symmetries. The method was recently applied to treat dissociative recombination of the H_3^+ ion. Since H_3^+ dissociative recombination has been a controversial problem, the present study also allows us to test the method on the process of photoionization, which is understood better than dissociative recombination. Good agreement with two photoionization experiments is obtained.

We present a multichannel scattering calculation of elastic and inelastic cold collisions between two low-field seeking, metastable ^{88}Sr [(5s5p) ^3P_2] atoms in the presence of an external magnetic field. The scattering physics is governed by strong anisotropic long-range interactions, which lead to pronounced coupling among the partial waves of relative motion. As a result, nonadiabatic transitions are shown to trigger a high rate of inelastic losses. At relatively high energies, T > 100 mkK, the total inelastic collision rate is comparable with the elastic rate. However, at lower collisional energy, the elastic rate decreases, and at T ~ 1mkK, it becomes substantially smaller than the inelastic rate. Our study suggests that magnetic trap** and evaporative cooling of ^{88}Sr [(5s5p) ^3P_2] atoms, as well as ^{40}Ca [(4s4p) ^3P_2], in low-field seeking states will prove difficult to achieve experimentally.
