We describe a compact calorimeter that opens ultra-low temperature heat capacity studies of small metal crystals in moderate magnetic fields. The performance is demonstrated on the canonical heavy Fermion metal YbRh2Si2. Thermometry is provided by a fast current sensing noise thermometer. This single thermometer enables us to cover a wide temperature range of interest from 175 $μ$K to 90 mK with temperature independent relative precision. Temperatures are tied to the international temperature scale with a single point calibration. A superconducting solenoid surrounding the cell provides the sample field for tuning its properties and operates a superconducting heat switch. Both adiabatic and relaxation calorimetry techniques, as well as magnetic field sweeps, are employed. The design of the calorimeter results in an addendum heat capacity which is negligible for the study reported. The keys to sample and thermometer thermalisation are the lack of dissipation in the temperature measurement and the steps taken to reduce the parasitic heat leak into the cell to the tens of fW level.

Abstract:
On November 3-4 2021, an interplanetary coronal mass injection (ICME) hits the magnetosphere, sparking a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm and auroras as far south as California and New Mexico. All detectors of the SEVAN network registered a Forbush decrease (FD) of 5-10 percentdeep in 1 minute time series of count rates. We present the results of a comparison of Fd registered on mountain altitudes on Aragats (Armenia), Lomnicky Stit (Slovakia), Musala (Bulgaria), and at sea level DESY (Hamburg, Germany), and in Mileshovka, Czechia. We present as well purity and barometric coefficients of different coincidences of SEVAN detector layers on Aragats. We demonstrate disturbances of the near-surface electric (NSEF) and geomagnetic fields at the arrival of the ICME on Earth.

Phase retrieval problems in antenna measurements arise when a reference phase cannot be provided to all measurement locations. Phase retrieval algorithms require sufficiently many independent measurement samples of the radiated fields to be successful. Larger amounts of independent data may improve the reconstruction of the phase information from magnitude-only measurements. We show how the knowledge of relative phases among the spectral components of a modulated signal at the individual measurement locations may be employed to reconstruct the relative phases between different measurement locations at all frequencies. Projection matrices map the estimated phases onto the space of fields possibly generated by equivalent antenna under test (AUT) sources at all frequencies. In this way, the phase of the reconstructed solution is not only restricted by the measurement samples at one frequency, but by the samples at allfrequencies simultaneously. The proposed method can increase the amount of independent phase information even if all probes are located in the far field of the AUT.

The conditioning and accuracy of various inverse surface-source formulations are investigated. First, the normal systems of equations are discussed. Second, different implementations of the zero-field condition are analyzed regarding their effect on solution accuracy, conditioning, and source ambiguity. The weighting of the Love-current side constraint is investigated in order to provide an accurate problem-independent methodology.
The transformation results for simulated and measured near-field data show a comparable behavior regarding accuracy and conditioning for most of the formulations. Advantages of the Love-current solutions are found only in diagnostic capabilities. Regardless of this, the Love side constraint is a computationally costly way to influence the iterative solver threshold, which is more conveniently controlled with the appropriate type of normal equation.
The solution behavior of the inverse surface-source formulations is mostly influenced by the choice of the reconstruction surface. A spherical Huygens surface leads to the best conditioning, whereas the most accurate solutions are found with a tight, possibly convex hull around the antenna under test.

Phase retrieval is in general a non-convex and non-linear task and the corresponding algorithms struggle with the issue of local minima. We consider the case where the measurement samples within typically very small and disconnected subsets are coherently linked to each other - which is a reasonable assumption for our objective of antenna measurements. Two classes of measurement setups are discussed which can provide this kind of extra information: multi-probe systems and holographic measurements with multiple reference signals. We propose several formulations of the corresponding phase retrieval problem. The simplest of these formulations poses a linear system of equations similar to an eigenvalue problem where a unique non-trivial null-space vector needs to be found. Accurate phase reconstruction for partially coherent observations is, thus, possible by a reliable solution process and with judgment of the solution quality. Under ideal, noise-free conditions, the required sampling density is less than two times the number of unknowns. Noise and other observation errors increase this value slightly. Simulations for Gaussian random matrices and for antenna measurement scenarios demonstrate that reliable phase reconstruction is possible with the presented approach.
