A general method for solving numerically the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, that is based on the Suzuki-Trotter scheme with the split-step Fourier approach, is introduced. The method relies on a Hamiltonian decomposition, where except of the components depending exclusively on the momentum or on the position operators, there are also terms depending on both momentum and position operators in particular configurations. We demonstrate that, for as long as the latter does not depend on noncommuting coordinates of the momentum and position operators, nondipole effects in laser-matter interactions can be studied without applying extra unitary operations. Specifically, we analyze the effect of nondipole corrections in ionization of a two-dimensional hydrogen atom for low- and high-frequency pulses. In the former case, the electron wave packet dynamics is dominated by rescattering processes within the laser pulse, leading to the high-order harmonic generation. We illustrate that harmonics of even orders are generated in the direction of the laser field polarization. On the contrary, for high-frequency pulses, such rescattering processes can be neglected. We demonstrate that a significant portion of the low-energy photoelectrons is detected opposite to the laser pulse propagation direction as a consequence of their post-pulse wave packet spreading and interaction with the parent ion.

Formation of electron vortices and momentum spirals in photodetachment of the H$^-$ anion driven by isolated ultrashort laser pulses of circular polarization or by pairs of such pulses (of either corotating or counterrotating polarizations) are analyzed under the scope of the strong-field approximation. It is demonstrated that the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) and helicity of each individual pulse can be used to actively manipulate and control the vortical pattern in the probability amplitude of photodetachment. Specifically, the two-dimensional map**s of probability amplitude can be rotated in the polarization plane with changing the CEP of the driving pulse (or two corotating pulses); thus, offering a new tool of field characterization. Furthermore, it is shown that the formation of spirals or annihilation of vortices relates directly to the time-reversal symmetry of the laser field, which is realized by a pair of pulses with opposite helicities and CEPs.

Dynamical Sauter-Schwinger mechanism of pair creation by a time-dependent electric field comprising of $N_{\rm rep}$ identical pulses is analyzed within the framework of the spinor and scalar quantum electrodynamics. For linearly polarized pulses, both theories predict that a single eigenmode of the matter wave follows the dynamics of a two-level system. This dynamics, however, is either governed by a Hermitian (for spin 1/2 particles) or pseudo-Hermitian (for spin 0 particles) Hamiltonian. Essentially, both theories lead to a Fraunhofer-type enhancement of the momentum distributions of created pairs. While in the fermionic case the enhancement is never perfect and it deteriorates with increasing the number of pulses in a train $N_{\rm rep}$, in the bosonic case we observe the opposite. More specifically, it is at exceptional points where the spectra of bosonic pairs scale exactly as $N_{\rm rep}^2$, and this scaling is even enhanced with increasing the number of pulses in a train.

Momentum distributions of electron-positron pairs created from the vacuum by an oscillating in time electric field are calculated in the framework of quantum field theory. A pronounced enhancement of those distributions is observed as the frequency of the electric field passes across the one-photon threshold. Below that threshold the pairs preferentially carry a longitudinal momentum, while above the threshold they tend to carry a transverse momentum. Such momentum sharing has an impact on the number of produced pairs: It grows fast with increasing the field frequency below the threshold but it saturates at a roughly constant value above it. On the other hand, at the fixed frequency above the one-photon threshold, the number of pairs scales quadratically with the field strength. This typically perturbative scaling holds even for large electric fields. Thus, the validity of the perturbation theory is extended here to processes which result in creation of particles with substantial transverse momenta.

The domain of validity of the Coulomb-Corrected Strong Field Approximation (CCSFA) is going to be analyzed in relation to the semi-classical dynamics of electrons during ionization of hydrogen-like targets. Our analysis is limited to ionization driven by Ti-sapphire laser pulses with intensities up to roughly 10$^{14}$ Wcm$^{-2}$. For such parameters, the effects related to radiation pressure are small and the laser field can be described in the dipole approximation. By applying the Magnus expansion for the exact retarded electron propagator we obtain an {\it effective action} which is free of Coulomb singularities and branch points when the complex-time trajectories are used. Furthermore, we show that the classical action is exactly recovered as the asymptotic limit of its effective counterpart. The applicability of such limit is also discussed.

Distinctive patterns are found in the energy probability distributions of photoelectrons. Except of the already observed patterns, which were studied in Phys. Rev. A {\bf 94}, 013402 (2016), we discover an additional interference-free smooth supercontinuum in the high-energy portion of the spectrum, reaching tens of kiloelectronovolts. As we show, the latter is sensitive to the driving field intensity and it can be detected in a narrow polar-angular window. Once these high-energy electrons are collected, they can form solitary attosecond pulses. This is particularly important in light of various applications of attosecond electron beams such as in ultrafast electron diffraction and crystallography, or in time-resolved electron microscopy of physical, chemical, and biological processes.

By utilizing the frameworks of laser-dressed spinor and scalar quantum electrodynamics, a comparison between the production of pairs of Dirac and Klein-Gordon particles is drawn. Positron energy spectra and angular distributions are presented for various laser parameters. We identify conditions under which predictions from Klein-Gordon theory either closely resemble or largely differ from those of the proper Dirac theory. In particular, we address the question to which extent the relevance of spin effects is influenced by the short duration of the laser pulse.

Radiation pressure effects in ionization by short linearly-polarized laser pulses are investigated in the framework of strong-field approximation, in both nonrelativistic and relativistic formulations. Differences between both approaches are discussed, and retardation and recoil corrections are defined. It is demonstrated how these corrections can be incorporated into the nonrelativistic approach, leading to the so-called quasi-relativistic formulation. These three approaches are further applied to the analysis of signatures of radiation pressure in energy-angular distributions of photoelectrons. It is demonstrated that, for Ti:Sapphire laser pulses of intensities up to $10^{16}\mathrm{W/cm}^2$, predictions of the quasi-relativistic formulation agree well with those of the full relativistic one, and that the recoil corrections contribute predominantly to the radiation pressure effects.

Ionization by relativistically intense laser pulses of finite duration is considered in the framework of strong-field quantum electrodynamics. Our main focus is on the formation of ionization supercontinua. More specifically, when studying the energy distributions of photoelectrons ionized by circularly polarized pulses, we observe the appearance of broad structures lacking the interference patterns. These supercontinua extend over hundreds of driving photon energies, thus corresponding to high-order nonlinear processes. The corresponding polar-angle distributions show asymmetries which are attributed to the radiation pressure experienced by photoelectrons. Moreover, our time analysis shows that the electrons comprising the supercontinuum can form pulses of short duration. While we present the fully numerical results, their interpretation is based on the saddle-point approximation for the ionization probability amplitude.

This approach in the first order with respect to the binding potential (the so-called generalized eikonal approximation) avoids a singularity at the potential center. Thus, in contrast to the ordinary eikonal approximation, it allows to treat rescattering phenomena in terms of quantum trajectories. We demonstrate how the first Born approximation and its domain of validity follow from eikonal perturbation theory. Using this approach, we study the coherent diffraction patterns in photoelectron energy spectra and their modifications induced by the interaction of photoelectrons with the atomic potential. Along with these first results, we discuss the prospects of using the generalized eikonal approximation to study strong-field ionization from multi-centered atomic systems and to study other strong-field phenomena.

Also experiments in the field of ultrafast physics rely on the frequency comb technique to generate precisely controlled attosecond optical pulses by means of the high-order harmonic generation. However, in order to generate even shorter laser pulses or to apply this technique in investigations of nuclear structure, combs of frequencies of the order of MeV are necessary. It seems that it may not be possible to achieve such photon energies by high-order harmonic generation. In this context the possibility of the generation of Thomson and Compton-based frequency combs is presented. Diffraction of generated radiation by a sequence of laser pulses and its analogy to the diffraction grating is elucidated. The Compton and Thomson radiation spectra, generated in collisions of an electron beam with a powerful laser beam, are studied in the framework of quantum and classical electrodynamics, respectively. We show that there are frequency regimes where both radiation spectra are nearly identical, which for Compton scattering relates to the process which preserves the electron spin. Although the radiation spectra are nearly identical, the corresponding probability amplitudes exhibit different global phases. This has pronounced consequences, which we demonstrate by investigating temporal power distributions in both cases. We show that, contrary to Thomson scattering, it is not always possible to synthesize short laser pulses from Compton radiation. This happens when the global phase of the Compton amplitude varies in a nonlinear way with the frequency of emitted photons. We also demonstrate that while the Compton process driven by a non-chirped laser pulse can generate chirped bursts of radiation, this is not the case for the Thomson process. In principle, both processes can lead to a generation of coherent frequency combs when single or multiple driving laser pulses collide with electrons. Once we synthesize these combs into short bursts of radiation, we can control them, for instance, by changing the time delay between the driving pulses.

Nonlinear Thomson and Compton processes, in which energetic electrons collide with an intense optical pulse, are investigated in the framework of classical and quantum electrodynamics. Spectral modulations of the emitted radiation, appearing as either oscillatory or pulsating structures, are observed and explained. It is shown that both processes generate a bandwidth radiation spanning the range of few MeV, which occurs in a small cone along the propagation direction of the colliding electrons. Most importantly, these broad bandwidth structures are temporarily coherent which proves that Thomson and Compton processes lead to generation of a supercontinuum. It is demonstrated that the radiation from the supercontinuum can be synthesized into zeptosecond (possibly even yoctosecond) pulses. Thus, confirming that Thomson and Compton scattering can be used as novel sources of an ultra-short radiation, opening routes to new physical domains for strong laser physics.

The distributions of Compton and Thomson radiation for a shaped laser pulse colliding with a free electron are calculated in the framework of quantum and classical electrodynamics, respectively. We introduce a scaling law for the Compton and the Thomson frequency distributions which universally applies to long and short incident pulses. Thus, we extend the validity of frequency scaling postulated in previous studies comparing nonlinear Compton and Thomson processes. The scaling law introduced in this paper relates the Compton no-spin flip** process to the Thomson process over nearly the entire spectrum of emitted radiation, including its high-energy portion. By applying the frequency scaling, we identify that both spin and polarization effects are responsible for differences between classical and quantum results. The same frequency scaling applies to angular distributions and to temporal power distributions of emitted radiation, which we illustrate numerically.

The spectra of Compton radiation emitted during electron scattering off an intense laser beam are calculated using the framework of strong-field quantum electrodynamics. We model these intense laser beams as finite length plane-wave-fronted pulses, similar to Neville and Rohrlich [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 3}, 1692 (1971)], or as trains of such pulses. Expressions for energy and angular distributions of Compton photons are derived such that a comparison of both situations becomes meaningful. Comparing frequency distributions for both an isolated laser pulse and a laser pulse train, we find a very good agreement between the results for long pulse durations which breaks down however for ultrashort laser pulses. The dependence of angular distributions of emitted radiation on a pulse duration is also investigated. Pronounced asymmetries of angular distributions are found for very short laser pulses, which gradually disappear with increasing the number of laser field oscillations. Those asymmetries are attributed to asymmetries of the vector potential describing an incident laser beam.
