The effects of gain and loss on the band structures of a bulk topological dielectric photonic crystal (PC) with $C_{6v}$ symmetry and the PC-air-PC interface are studied based on first-principle calculation. To illustrate the importance of parity-time (PT) symmetry, three systems are considered, namely the PT-symmetric, PT-asymmetric, and lossy systems. We find that the system with gain and loss distributed in a PT symmetric manner exhibits a phase transition from a PT exact phase to a PT broken phase as the strength of the gain and loss increases, while for the PT-asymmetric and lossy systems, no such phase transition occurs. Furthermore, based on the Wilson loop calculation, the topology of the PT-symmetric system in the PT exact phase is demonstrated to keep unchanged as the Hermitian system. At last, different kinds of edge states in Hermitian systems under the influences of gain and loss are studied and we find that while the eigenfrequencies of nontrivial edge states become complex conjugate pairs, they keep real for the trivial defect states.

Establishing and approaching the fundamental limit of orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing are necessary and increasingly urgent for current multiple-input multiple-output research. In this work, we elaborate the fundamental limit in terms of independent scattering channels (or degrees of freedom of scattered fields) through angular-spectral analysis, in conjunction with a rigorous Green function method. The scattering channel limit is universal for arbitrary spatial mode multiplexing, which is launched by a planar electromagnetic device, such as antenna, metasurface, etc, with a predefined physical size. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the limit by a metasurface hologram that transforms orthogonal OAM modes to plane-wave modes scattered at critically separated angular-spectral regions. Particularly, a minimax optimization algorithm is applied to suppress angular spectrum aliasing, achieving good performances in both full-wave simulation and experimental measurement at microwave frequencies. This work offers a theoretical upper bound and corresponding approach route for engineering designs of OAM multiplexing.

We demonstrate the coexistence of pseudospin- and valley-Hall-like edge states in a photonic crystal with $C_{3v}$ symmetry, which is composed of three interlacing triangular sublattices with the same lattice constants. By tuning the geometry of the sublattices, three complete photonic band gaps with nontrivial topology can be created, one of which is due to the band inversion associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom at the $Γ$ point and the other two due to the gap** out of Dirac cones associated with the valley degree of freedom at the $K, K'$ points. The system can support tri-band pseudospin- and valley-momentum locking edge states at properly designed domain-wall interfaces. Furthermore, to demonstrate the novel interplay of the two kinds of edge states in a single configuration, we design a four-channel system, where the unidirectional routing of electromagnetic waves against sharp bends between two routes can be selectively controlled by the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom. Our work combines the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom in a single configuration and may provide more flexibility in manipulating electromagnetic waves with promising potential for multiband and multifunctional applications.

Chiral surface states along the zigzag edge of a valley photonic crystal in the honeycomb lattice are demonstrated. By decomposing the local fields into orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes, we find that the chiral surface states present OAM-dependent unidirectional propagation characteristics. Particularly, the propagation directivities of the surface states are quantified by the local OAM decomposition and are found to depend on the chiralities of both the source and surface states. These findings allow for the engineering control of the unidirectional propagation of electromagnetic energy without requiring an ancillary cladding layer. Furthermore, we examine the propagation of the chiral surface states against sharp bends. It turns out that although only certain states successfully pass through the bend, the unidirectional propagation is well maintained due to the topology of the structure.

Electromagnetic topological insulators have been explored extensively due to the robust edge states they support. In this work, we propose a topological electromagnetic system based on a line defect in topologically nontrivial photonic crystals (PCs). With a finite-difference supercell approach, modal analysis of the PCs structure is investigated in detail. The topological line-defect states are pseudospin polarized and their energy flow directions are determined by the corresponding pseudospin helicities. These states can be excited by using two spatially-symmetric line-source arrays carrying orbital angular momenta. The feature of the unidirectional propagation is demonstrated and it is stable when disorders are introduced to the PCs structure.

The metasurfaces reflect the incident left circularly polarized (LCP)/right circularly polarized (RCP) plane wave to RCP/LCP vortex beams carrying OAM at normal or oblique direction. Unlike conventional metasurfaces that are composed of discrete scatterers, the scatterers on the proposed metasurface form a quasi-continuous pattern. The patterning of the metasurface is calculated through grating vectors, and no optimization of single scatterer is required. Furthermore, the distortions from local-response discontinuity of discrete scatterers are avoided. This letter provides great convenience to high-quality OAM generation.

As an attractive degree of freedom in electromagnetic (EM) waves, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) enables infinite communication channels for both classical and quantum communications. The exploration of OAM generation inspires various designs involving spiral phase plates, antenna arrays, metasurfaces, and computer-generated holograms. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate an approach to producing OAM carrying EM waves by a point defect in three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PCs). Simultaneous excitation of two vibrational-defect states with an elaborately engineered phase retardation generates a rotational state carrying OAM. Through converting guided waves in a line defect to localized waves in a point defect and then to radiated vortex waves in free space, the lowest four OAM-mode emitters, i.e., OAM indices of 1, -1, 2, and -2, are successfully realized. This work offers a physical mechanism to generate OAM by PCs, especially when the OAM generation is to be integrated with other designs.

The unique gate-voltage dependent optical properties of graphene make it a promising electrically-tunable plasmonic material. In this work, we proposed in-situ control of the polarization of nanoantennas by combining plasmonic structures with an electrostatically tunable graphene monolayer. The tunable polarizer is designed based on an asymmetric cross nanoantenna comprising two orthogonal metallic dipoles sharing the same feed gap. Graphene monolayer is deposited on a Si/SiO2 substrate, and inserted beneath the nanoantenna. Our modelling demonstrates that as the chemical potential is incremented up to 1 eV by electrostatic do**, resonant wavelength for the longer graphene-loaded dipole is blue shifted for 500 nm (~ 10% of the resonance) in the mid-infrared range, whereas the shorter dipole experiences much smaller influences due to the unique wavelength-dependent optical properties of graphene. In this way, the relative field amplitude and phase between the two dipole nanoantennas are electrically adjusted, and the polarization state of the reflected wave can be electrically tuned from the circular into near-linear states with the axial ratio changing over 8 dB. Our study thus confirms the strong light-graphene interaction with metallic nanostructures, and illuminates promises for high-speed electrically controllable optoelectronic devices.

An orbital angular momentum (OAM) detection approach at microwave band is proposed. A transmittance function is exploited to model a transmissive metasurface. Then the metasurface is designed to convert an OAM wave to multiple waves, only one of which is gaussian. The radiation direction of the gaussian wave is distinguishable according to the order of incident OAM. Consequently, by locating the gaussian wave, the incident OAM can be conveniently determined. We use a simple field source to simulate the incident OAM wave in fullwave simulation. It largely simplifies the simulation process when an incident wave carrying OAM is needed. Both numerical and full-wave simulation results are provided to validate our design and they show a good agreement with each other. Then, the metasurface is optimized for high directivity. Our work can provide an efficient and effective way for OAM detection in radio communications.

We present a theoretical study of the characteristics of the nonlinear spin-orbital angular momentum coupling induced by second-harmonic generation in plasmonic and dielectric nanostructures made of centrosymmetric materials. In particular, the connection between the phase singularities and polarization helicities in the longitudinal components of the fundamental and second-harmonic optical fields and the scatterer symmetry properties are discussed. By in-depth comparison between the interaction of structured optical beams with plasmonic and dielectric nanostructures, we have found that all-dielectric and plasmonic nanostructures that exhibit magnetic and electric resonances have comparable second-harmonic conversion efficiency. In addition, mechanisms for second-harmonic enhancement for single and chiral clusters of scatterers are unveiled and the relationships between the content of optical angular momentum of the incident optical beams and the enhancement of nonlinear light scattering is discussed. In particular, we formulate a general angular momenta conservation law for the nonlinear spin-orbital angular momentum interaction, which includes the quasi-angular-momentum of chiral structures with different-order rotational symmetry. As a key conclusion of our study relevant to nanophotonics, we argue that all-dielectric nanostructures provide a more suitable platform to investigate experimentally the nonlinear interaction between spin and orbital angular momenta, as compared to plasmonic ones, chiefly due to their narrower resonance peaks, lower intrinsic losses, and higher sustainable optical power.

The electric field integral equation is a well known workhorse for obtaining fields scattered by a perfect electric conducting (PEC) object. As a result, the nuances and challenges of solving this equation have been examined for a while. Two recent papers motivate the effort presented in this paper. Unlike traditional work that uses equivalent currents defined on surfaces, recent research proposes a technique that results in well conditioned systems by employing generalized Debye sources (GDS) as unknowns. In a complementary effort, some of us developed a method that exploits the same representation for both the geometry (subdivision surface representations) and functions defined on the geometry, also known as isogeometric analysis (IGA). The challenge in generalizing GDS method to a discretized geometry is the complexity of the intermediate operators. However, thanks to our earlier work on subdivision surfaces, the additional smoothness of geometric representation permits discretizing these intermediate operations. In this paper, we employ both ideas to present a well conditioned GDS-EFIE. Here, the intermediate surface Laplacian is well discretized by using subdivision basis. Likewise, using subdivision basis to represent the sources, results in an efficient and accurate IGA framework. Numerous results are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the approach.

In this work, second-order nonlinear light scattering, specifically sum-frequency generation (SFG) and second-harmonic generation (SHG), from plasmonic nanoantennas is modeled by the boundary element method (BEM). Far-field scattering patterns are compared with the results calculated by the Mie theory to validate the accuracy of the developed nonlinear solver. The SFG from a multi-resonant nanoantenna (MR-NA) and the SHG from a particle-in-cavity nanoantenna (PIC-NA) are analyzed by using the developed method. Enhancements of the scattering signals due to double-resonance of the MR-NA and gap plasmonic mode of the PIC-NA are observed. Unidirectional nonlinear radiation for the PIC-NA is realized. Moreover, its emission direction can be controlled by the location of the nanosphere. This work provides new theoretical tools and design guidelines for plasmonic nonlinear nanoantennas.

OAM is a new degree of freedom in EM waves and is promising for channel multiplexing in communication system. Although the OAM-carrying EM wave attracts more and more attention, the method of OAM generation at microwave frequencies still faces challenges, such as efficiency and simulation time. In this work, by using the circuit theory and equivalence principle, we build two simplified models, one for a single scatter and one for the whole metasurface to predict their EM responses. Both of the models significantly simplify the design procedure and reduce the simulation time. A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Due to the mirror symmetry breaking, chiral structures show fantastic electromagnetic (EM) properties involving negative refraction, giant optical activity, and asymmetric transmission. Aligned electric and magnetic dipoles excited in chiral structures contribute to extraordinary properties. However, the chiral structures that exhibit n-fold rotational symmetry show limited tuning capability. In this paper, we proposed a compact, light, and highly tunable anisotropic chiral structure to overcome this limitation and realize a linear-to-circular polarization conversion. The anisotropy is due to simultaneous excitations of two different pairs of aligned electric and magnetic dipoles. The 3D omega-like structure, etched on two sides of one PCB board and connected by metallic vias, achieves 60% of linearto- circular conversion (transmission) efficiency at the operating frequency of 9.2 GHz. The desired 90-degree phase shift between the two orthogonal linear polarization components is not only from the finite-thickness dielectric substrate but also from the anisotropic chiral response slightly off the resonance. The work enables elegant and practical polarization control of EM waves.

Second-harmonic (SH) generation is tremendously important for nonlinear sensing, microscopy and communication system. One of the great challenges of current designs is to enhance the SH signal and simultaneously tune its radiation direction with a high directivity. In contrast to the linear plasmonic scattering dominated by a bulk dipolar mode, a complex surface-induced multipolar source at the doubled frequency sets a fundamental limit to control the SH radiation from metallic nanostructures. In this work, we harness plasmonic hybridization mechanism together with a special selection rule governing the SH radiation to achieve the high-intensity and tunable-direction emission by a metallic particle-in-cavity nanoantenna (PIC-NA). The nanoantenna is modelled with a first-principle, self-consistent boundary element method, which considers the depletion of pump waves. The giant SH enhancement arises from a hybridized gap plasmon resonance between the small particle and the large cavity that functions as a concentrator and reflector. Centrosymmetry breaking of the PIC-NA not only modifies the gap plasmon mode boosting the SH signal, but also redirects the SH wave with a unidirectional emission. The PIC-NA has a significantly larger SH conversion efficiency compared to existing literature. The main beam of the radiation pattern can be steered over a wide angle by tuning the particle's position.

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a promising degree of freedom for fundamental studies in electromagnetics and quantum mechanics. The unlimited state space of OAM shows a great potential to enhance channel capacities of classical and quantum communications. By exploring the Pancharatnam-Berry phase concept and engineering anisotropic scatterers in a metasurface with spatially varying orientations, a plane wave with zero OAM can be converted to a vortex beam carrying nonzero OAM. In this paper, we proposed two types of novel PEC (perfect electric conductor)-PMC (perfect magnetic conductor) anisotropic metasurfaces. One is composed of azimuthally continuous loops and the other is constructed by azimuthally discontinuous dipole scatterers. Both types of metasurfaces are mounted on a mushroom-type high impedance surface. Compared to previous metasurface designs for generating OAM, the proposed ones achieve nearly perfect conversion efficiency. In view of the eliminated vertical component of electric field, the continuous metasurface shows very smooth phase pattern at the near-field region, which cannot be achieved by convectional metasurfaces composed of discrete scatterers. On the other hand, the metasurface with discrete dipole scatterers shows a great flexibility to generate OAM with arbitrary topological charges. Our work is fundamentally and practically important to high-performance OAM generation.

Due to the static magnetic field, the conductivity for graphene becomes a dispersive and anisotropic tensor, which complicates most modeling methodologies. In this paper, a novel equivalent circuit model is proposed for graphene with the magnetostatic bias based on the electric field integral equation (EFIE). To characterize the anisotropic property of the biased graphene, the resistive part of the unit circuit is replaced by a resistor in series with current control voltage sources (CCVSs). The CCVSs account for the off-diagonal parts of the surface conductivity tensor for the magnetized graphene. Furthermore, the definitions of the absorption cross section and the scattering cross section are revisited to make them feasible for derived circuit analysis. This proposed method is benchmarked with several numerical examples. This paper also provides a new equivalent circuit model to deal with dispersive and anisotropic materials.

Generalized coupled-line all-pass phasers, based on transversally-cascaded (TC), longitudinally-cascaded (LC) and hybrid-cascaded (HC) coupled transmission line sections, are presented and demonstrated using analytical, full-wave and experimental results. It is shown that for N commensurate coupled-line sections, LC and TC phasers exhibit N group delay peaks per coupled-line section harmonic frequency band, in contrast to the TC configuration, which exhibits only one peak within this band. It is also shown that for a given maximum achievable coupling-coefficient, the HC configuration provides the largest group delay swing. A wave-interference analysis is finally applied to the various coupled-line phasers, explaining their unique group delay characteristics based on physical wave-propagation mechanisms.

The radiation principle of travelling-wave type phase-reversal antennas is explained in details, unveiling the presence of magnetic-dipole radiation in addition to well-known electric dipole radiation. It is point out that such magnetic dipole radiation is specific to the case of traveling-wave phase-reversal antennas whereas only electric-dipole radiation exists in resonant-type phase-reversal antennas. It is shown that a phase-reversal travelling-wave antenna alternately operates as an array of magnetic dipoles and an array of electric-dipoles during a time-harmonic period. This radiation mechanism is confirmed through both full-wave and experimental results.

The proposed tag principle is successfully validated using measurements, where the absence and presence of the band-rejection, is shown to carry the bit information. Its fabrication simplicity is also demonstrated by its implementation on a flexible substrate. Finally, two different tag formation schemes, based on specific set of resonance suppressions, are discussed in detailed.

We present a new multilevel method for calculating Poisson's equation, which often arises form electrostatic problems, by using hierarchical loop bases. This method, termed hierarchical Loop basis Poisson Solver (hieLPS), extends previous Poisson solver through loop-tree basis to a multilevel mesh. In this method, Poisson's equation is solved by a two-step procedure: First, the electric flux is found by using loop-tree basis based on Helmholtz decomposition of field; Second, the potential distribution is solved rapidly with a fast solution of O(N) complexity. Among the solution procedures, finding the loop part of electric flux is the most critical part and dominates the computational effort. To expedite this part's convergent speed, we propose to use hierarchical loop bases to construct a multilevel system. As a result, the whole solution time has been noticeably reduced. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

We propose a novel efficient algorithm to solve Poisson equation in irregular two dimensional domains for electrostatics. It can handle Dirichlet, Neumann or mixed boundary problems in which the filling media can be homogeneous or inhomogeneous. The basic idea of the new method is solve the problem in three steps: (i) First solve the equation $\nabla\cdot\mathbf D=ρ$. The inverse of the divergence operator in a restricted subspace is found to yield the electric flux density $\mathbf D$ by a fast direct solver in O(N) operations. The $\mathbf D$ so obtained is nonunique with indeterminate divergence-free component. Then the electric field is found by $\mathbf E=\mathbf D/ε$. But $\nabla\times\mathbf E=0$ for electrostatic field; hence, $\mathbf E$ is curl free and orthogonal to the divergence free space. (ii) An orthogonalization process is used to purify the electric field making it curl free and unique. (iii) Then the potential $φ$ is obtained by solving $\nabla φ=-\mathbf E$ or finding the inverse of the gradient operator in a restricted subspace by a similar fast direct solver in O(N) operations. Treatments for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are addressed. Finally, the validation and efficiency are illustrated by several numerical examples. Through these simulations, it is observed that the computational complexity of our proposed method almost scales as O(N) where N is the triangle patch number of meshes. Consequently, this new algorithm is a feasible fast Poisson solver.
