We report new experimental results on the search for dark photons based on a near-quantum-limited haloscope equipped with a superconducting cavity. The loaded quality factor of the superconducting cavity is $6\times10^{5}$, so that the expected signal from dark photon dark matter can be enhanced by more than one order compared to a copper cavity. A Josephson parametric amplifier with a near-quantum-limited noise temperature has been utilized to minimize the noise during the search. Furthermore, a digital acquisition card based on field programmable gate arrays has been utilized to maximize data collection efficiency with a duty cycle being 100$\%$. This work has established the most stringent constraints on dark photons at around 26.965 $μ$eV. In the future, our apparatus can be extended to search for other dark matter candidates, such as axions and axion-like particles, and scrutinize new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Preceding a core-collapse supernova, various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming core-collapse supernova can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-supernova neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande on pre-supernova neutrino detection. A pre-supernova alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the Super-Kamiokande detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-supernova neutrino signal from a 15 M$_{\odot}$ star within 510 pc of the Earth, at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. For a Betelgeuse-like model with optimistic parameters, it can provide early warnings up to 12 hours in advance.

With the rapid development of Kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S, Se)4 solar cells in the past few years, how to achieve higher cost-performance ratio has become an important topic in the future development and industrialization of this technology. Herein, we demonstrate an all-solution route for the cell fabrication, in particular targeting at the solution processed window layer comprised of ZnO nanoparticles/Ag nanowires. A multi-interface engineering strategy assisted by organic polymers and molecules is explored to synergistically improve the film deposition, passivate the surface defects and facilitate the charge transfer. These efforts help us achieve high-performance and robust Kesterite solar cells at extremely low time and energy costs, with efficiency records of 14.37% and 13.12% being realized in rigid and flexible Kesterite solar cells, respectively. Our strategy here is also promising to be transplanted into other solar cells with similar geometric and energy band structures, hel** reduce production costs and shorten the production cycle (i.e. increasing production capacity) of these photovoltaic industries.

Atomic disorder, a widespread problem in compound crystalline materials, is a imperative affecting the performance of multi-chalcogenide Cu2ZnSn(S, Se)4 (CZTSSe) photovoltaic device known for its low cost and environmental friendliness. Cu-Zn disorder is particularly abundantly present in CZTSSe due to its extraordinarily low formation energy, having induced high-concentration deep defects and severe charge loss, while its regulation remains challenging due to the contradiction between disorder-order phase transition thermodynamics and atom-interchange kinetics. Herein, through introducing more vacancies in the CZTSSe surface, we explored a vacancy-assisted strategy to reduce the atom-interchange barrier limit to facilitate the Cu-Zn ordering kinetic process. The improvement in the Cu-Zn order degree has significantly reduced the charge loss in the device and helped us realize 15.4% (certified at 14.9%) and 13.5% efficiency (certified at 13.3%) in 0.27 cm2 and 1.1 cm2-area CZTSSe solar cells, respectively, thus bringing substantial advancement for emerging inorganic thin-film photovoltaics.

Sulfide Kesterite Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS), a nontoxic and low-cost photovoltaic material, has always being facing severe charge recombination and poor carrier transport, resulting in the cell efficiency record stagnating around 11% for years. Gradient bandgap is a promising approach to relieve these issues, however, has not been effectively realized in Kesterite solar cells due to the challenges in controlling the gradient distribution of alloying elements at high temperatures. Herein, targeting at the Cd alloyed CZTS, we propose a pre-crystallization strategy to reduce the intense vertical mass transport and Cd rapid diffusion in the film growth process, thereby realizing front Cd-gradient CZTS absorber. The Cd-gradient CZTS absorber, exhibiting downward bending conduction band structure, has significantly enhanced the minority carrier transport and additionally improved band alignment and interface property of CZTS/CdS heterojunction. Ultimately, we have achieved a champion total-area efficiency of 13.5% (active-area efficiency: 14.1%) in the cell and in particular a high open-circuit voltage of >800 mV. We have also achieved a certified total-area cell efficiency of 13.16%, realizing a substantial step forward for the pure sulfide Kesterite solar cell.

As the amount of loaded $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ was doubled compared to the first loading, the capacity of the powder dissolving system was doubled. We also developed new batches of gadolinium sulfate with even further reduced radioactive impurities. In addition, a more efficient screening method was devised and implemented to evaluate these new batches of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$. Following the second loading, the Gd concentration in SK was measured to be $333.5\pm2.5$ ppm via an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS). From the mean neutron capture time constant of neutrons from an Am/Be calibration source, the Gd concentration was independently measured to be 332.7 $\pm$ 6.8(sys.) $\pm$ 1.1(stat.) ppm, consistent with the AAS result. Furthermore, during the loading the Gd concentration was monitored continually using the capture time constant of each spallation neutron produced by cosmic-ray muons, and the final neutron capture efficiency was shown to become 1.5 times higher than that of the first loaded phase, as expected.

We report the first search result for the flux of astrophysical electron antineutrinos for energies O(10) MeV in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. In June 2020, gadolinium was introduced to the ultra-pure water of the SK detector in order to detect neutrons more efficiently. In this new experimental phase, SK-Gd, we can search for electron antineutrinos via inverse beta decay with efficient background rejection and higher signal efficiency thanks to the high efficiency of the neutron tagging technique. In this paper, we report the result for the initial stage of SK-Gd with a $22.5\times552$ $\rm kton\cdot day$ exposure at 0.01% Gd mass concentration. No significant excess over the expected background in the observed events is found for the neutrino energies below 31.3 MeV. Thus, the flux upper limits are placed at the 90% confidence level. The limits and sensitivities are already comparable with the previous SK result with pure-water ($22.5 \times 2970 \rm kton\cdot day$) owing to the enhanced neutron tagging.

The q95 window for Type-I Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) suppression using n=4 even parity Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) has been significantly expanded to a range from 3.9 to 4.8, which is demonstrated to be reliable and repeatable in EAST over the last two years. This window is significantly wider than the previous one, which is around q95=3.7pm0.1, and is achieved using n=4 odd parity RMPs. Here, n represents the toroidal mode number of the applied RMPs and q95 is the safety factor at the 95% normalized poloidal magnetic flux. During ELM suppression, there is only a slight drop in the stored energy (<=10%). The comparison of pedestal density profiles suggests that ELM suppression is achieved when the pedestal gradient is kept lower than a threshold. This wide q95 window for ELM suppression is consistent with the prediction made by MARS-F modeling prior to the experiment, in which it is located at one of the resonant q95 windows for plasma response. The Chirikov parameter taking into account plasma response near the pedestal top, which measures the plasma edge stochasticity, significantly increases when q95 exceeds 4, mainly due to denser neighboring rational surfaces. Modeling of plasma response by the MARS-F code shows a strong coupling between resonant and non-resonant components across the pedestal region, which is characteristic of the kink-peeling like response observed during RMP-ELM suppression in previous studies on EAST. These promising results show the reliability of ELM suppression using the n=4 RMPs and expand the physical understanding on ELM suppression mechanism.

Neutrinos associated with solar flares (solar-flare neutrinos) provide information on particle acceleration mechanisms during the impulsive phase of solar flares. We searched using the Super-Kamiokande detector for neutrinos from solar flares that occurred during solar cycles $23$ and $24$, including the largest solar flare (X28.0) on November 4th, 2003. In order to minimize the background rate we searched for neutrino interactions within narrow time windows coincident with $γ$-rays and soft X-rays recorded by satellites. In addition, we performed the first attempt to search for solar-flare neutrinos from solar flares on the invisible side of the Sun by using the emission time of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). By selecting twenty powerful solar flares above X5.0 on the visible side and eight CMEs whose emission speed exceeds $2000$ $\mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ on the invisible side from 1996 to 2018, we found two (six) neutrino events coincident with solar flares occurring on the visible (invisible) side of the Sun, with a typical background rate of $0.10$ ($0.62$) events per flare in the MeV-GeV energy range. No significant solar-flare neutrino signal above the estimated background rate was observed. As a result we set the following upper limit on neutrino fluence at the Earth $\mathitΦ<1.1\times10^{6}$ $\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level for the largest solar flare. The resulting fluence limits allow us to constrain some of the theoretical models for solar-flare neutrino emission.

SK-Gd has the potential to provide early alerts of incipient core-collapse supernovae through detection of electron anti-neutrinos from thermal and nuclear processes responsible for the cooling of massive stars before the gravitational collapse of their cores. These pre-supernova neutrinos emitted during the silicon burning phase can exceed the energy threshold for IBD reactions. We present the sensitivity of SK-Gd to pre-supernova stars and the techniques used for the development of a pre-supernova alarm based on the detection of these neutrinos in SK, as well as prospects for future SK-Gd phases with higher concentrations of Gd. For the current SK-Gd phase, high-confidence alerts for Betelgeuse could be issued up to nine hours in advance of the core-collapse itself.

Metal-oxide surfaces act as both Brønsted acids and bases, which allows the exchange of protons with the electrolyte solution and generates either positive or negative proton charges depending on the environmental pH. These interfacial proton charges are then compensated by counter-ions from the electrolyte solution, which leads to the formation of the electric double layer (EDL). Because the EDL plays a crucial role in electrochemistry, geochemistry and colloid science, understanding the structure-property relationship of the EDL in metal-oxide systems from both experimental and theoretical approaches is necessary. This chapter focuses on the physical chemistry of the protonic double layer at the metal-oxide/electrolyte interface. In particular, determinations of the EDL capacitance and the double-layer potential from potentiometric titration experiments, electrochemical methods, surface-sensitive vibrational spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are summarized. This is followed by discussions from the atomistic modelling aspect of the EDL, with an emphasis on the density-functional theory-based molecular dynamics simulations. A conclusion and outlook for future works on this topic are also given.

In a standard computed tomography (CT) image, pixels having the same Hounsfield Units (HU) can correspond to different materials and it is, therefore, challenging to differentiate and quantify materials. Dual-energy CT (DECT) is desirable to differentiate multiple materials, but DECT scanners are not widely available as single-energy CT (SECT) scanners. Here we develop a deep learning approach to perform DECT imaging by using standard SECT data. A deep learning model to map low-energy image to high-energy image using a two-stage convolutional neural network (CNN) is developed. The model was evaluated using patients who received contrast-enhanced abdomen DECT scan with a popular DE application: virtual non-contrast (VNC) imaging and contrast quantification. The HU differences between the predicted and original high-energy CT images are 3.47, 2.95, 2.38 and 2.40 HU for ROIs on the spine, aorta, liver, and stomach, respectively. The HU differences between VNC images obtained from original DECT and deep learning DECT are 4.10, 3.75, 2.33 and 2.92 HU for the 4 ROIs, respectively. The aorta iodine quantification difference between iodine maps obtained from original DECT and deep learning DECT images is 0.9\%, suggesting high consistency between the predicted and the original high-energy CT images. This study demonstrates that highly accurate DECT imaging with single low-energy data is achievable by using a deep learning approach. The proposed method can significantly simplify the DECT system design, reducing the scanning dose and imaging cost.

We propose that a type of molecular rulers, which contains two electron spins with precisely adjustable distance by varying the length of the shape-persistent polymer chains, can be utilized to constrain the axial-vector mediated interaction between electron spins at the nanometer scale. With measurements of the coupling strengths between two electron spins within different molecular rulers, an improved laboratory bound of exotic dipole-dipole interaction between electrons is established within the force range from 3 to 220 nm. The upper bound of the coupling $g_A^e g_A^e/4π\hbar c $ at 200 nm is $|g_A^e g_A^e/4π\hbar c| \leq 4.9\times10^{-13}$, which is about 20 times more stringent than previous limits.

A scheme with gold cone-capillary is proposed to improve the protons acceleration and involved problems are investigated by using the two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. It is demonstrated that the cone-capillary can efficiently guide and collimate the protons to a longer distance and lead to a better beam quality with a dense density $\geq10n_c$, monoenergetic peak energy $E_k \sim 1.51~\mathrm{GeV}$, spatial emittance $\sim0.0088~\mathrm{mm}~\mathrm{mrad}$ with divergence angle $θ\sim 1.0^{\circ}$ and diameter $\sim 0.5\mathrm{μm}$. The enhancement is mainly attributed to the focusing effect by the transverse electric field generated by the cone as well as the capillary, which can prevent greatly the protons from expanding in the transverse direction. Comparable to without the capillary, the protons energy spectra have a stable monoenergetic peak and divergence angle near to $1.0^{\circ}$ in longer time. Besides, the efficiency of acceleration depending on the capillary length is explored, and the optimal capillary length is also achieved. Such a target may be benefit to many applications such as ions fast ignition in inertial fusion, proton therapy in medicine and so on.

By implementing the bremsstrahlung with Monte Carlo algorithm into the particle-in-cell code, the bremsstrahlung and nonlinear Compton scattering can be studied simultaneously in comparison way in the laser plasma interactions. The simulations are performed for the laser of different intensities interacting with either low-$Z$ or high-$Z$ target. The relative strength of the two photon emission from bremsstrahlung and nonlinear Compton scattering are compared. The result shows that when an ultrastrong intensity laser interacting with a thin and relative high $Z$ target the nonlinear Compton scattering is dominant, however, when the laser intensity $I < 10^{22} \mathrm{W/cm^2}$, the photon emission contributed by bremsstrahlung is comparable to that from nonlinear Compton scattering. In this case the usual ignorable of bremsstrahlung need to be reconsidered.

Abstract:
The effect of ion mass on pair production in the interaction of an ultraintense laser with overdense plasmas has been explored by particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. It is found that the heavier ion mass excites the higher and broader electrostatic field, which is responsible for the enhancement of backward photon number. The pair yields are also reinforced due to the increase of head-on collision…

The pair yields are also reinforced due to the increase of head-on collision of backwards photon with incoming laser. By examining the density evolution and angle distribution of each particle species the origin of pair yields enhancement has been clarified further.

In strictly speaking, all the natural phenomena on the earth should be treated under rotating coordinate. The existence of baroclinic nonequivalent barotropic laminar solution for rotating fluids is still open though the laminar solutions for the irrotational fluid had been well studied. In this letter, all the possible equivalent barotropic (EB) laminar solution are firstly explored and all the possible baroclinic non-EB elliptic circulations and hyperbolic laminar modes are discovered. The baroclinic EB circulations (including the vortex streets and hurricane like vortices) possess rich structures because either the arbitrary solutions of arbitrary nonlinear Poison equations can be used or an arbitrary two-dimensional stream function is revealed. The discovery of the baroclinic non-EB modes disproves a known conjecture. The results may be broadly applied in atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, plasma physics, astrophysics and so on.
