The generation of high-order harmonics in bulk solids subjected to intense ultrashort laser pulses has opened up new avenues for research in extreme nonlinear optics and light-matter interaction on sub-cycle timescales. Despite significant advancement over the past decade, a complete understanding of the involved phenomena is still lacking. High-harmonic generation in solids is currently understood as arising from nonlinear intraband currents, interband recollision and ionization-related phenomena. As all of these mechanisms involve or rely upon laser-driven excitation we combine measurements of the angular dependence of nonlinear absorption and high-order harmonic generation in bulk crystals to demonstrate the relation between high-harmonic emission and nonlinear, laser-induced ionization in solids.
An unambiguous correlation between the emission of harmonics and laser-induced ionization is found experimentally, that is supported by numerical solutions of the semiconductor Bloch equations and calculations of orientation-dependent ionization rates using maximally localized Wannier-functions.

Advanced micro- and nanomachining applications require improved control over the excitation characteristics. Here, we relate the emission of low-order harmonics to the strong laser-field-induced plasma formation. Together with a measurement of the total plasma density we identify the contribution of two competing ionization mechanisms - strong-field and electron-impact ionization.

Laser-induced plasma formation and subsequent relaxation in solid dielectrics is the precursor to structural modifications that are accompanied by a permanent alteration of material properties. The decay of the electron-hole plasma through distinct relaxation channels determines the properties of the resulting modification. Based on an experimental arrangement combining a time-resolved transmission measurement with a cross-phase modulation measurement, we isolate the plasma formation and relaxation dynamics in the bulk of amorphous fused silica excited by femtosecond short-wavelength infrared ($λ=\,2100\,$nm) laser pulses. Whereas the relaxation time of the generated electron-hole plasma was so far assumed to be constant, our findings indicate an intensity-dependent relaxation time. We attribute this intensity dependence to vibrational detrap** of self-trapped excitons.

Kerr-type nonlinearities form the basis for our physical understanding of nonlinear optical phenomena in condensed matter, such as self-focusing, solitary waves, and wave mixing. In strong fields, they are complemented by higher-order nonlinearities that enable high harmonic generation, which is currently understood as the interplay of light-driven intraband charge dynamics and interband recombination. Remarkably, the nonlinear response emerging from the associated sub-cycle injection dynamics of electrons into the conduction band has been almost completely overlooked in solids and only partially considered in the gas phase. Here we reveal this strong-field-induced nonlinearity in amorphous wide-bandgap dielectrics by means of time-resolved, low-order wave mixing experiments and show that close to the material damage threshold the so far unexplored injection current provides the leading contribution. The sensitivity of the harmonic emission to the sub-cycle ionization dynamics offers an original approach to characterize the evolution of laser-induced plasma formation in optical microprocessing.
