We investigated the free corrosion potential at an interface between an Al electrode and an aqueous NaCl solution (NaCl(aq)) under acidic conditions via density functional theory combined with the effective screening medium and reference interaction site model (ESM-RISM). Firstly, the electrode potentials for the anodic and cathodic corrosion reactions were obtained from the grand potential profile as a function of the electron chemical potential at the interface. Thereafter, we determined the free corrosion potential using the Tafel extrapolation method. The results of the free corrosion potential were consistent with previous experimental data. By controlling the pH of the NaCl(aq), we determined the pH dependence of the free corrosion potential, and the results agreed well with the experimental results. Our results indicated that the ESM-RISM method duly described the environmental effect of an acidic solution and precisely determined the free corrosion potential. Therefore, the application of this method presents an efficient approach toward calculating the free corrosion potential for various reactions.

We designed a versatile analog front-end chip, called LTARS, for TPC-applications, primarily targeted at dual-phase liquid Ar-TPCs for neutrino experiments and negative-ion $μ$-TPCs for directional dark matter searches. Low-noise performance and wide dynamic range are two requirements for reading out the signals induced on the TPC readout channels. One of the development objectives is to establish the analog processing circuits under low temperature operation, which are designed on function block basis as reusable IPs (Intellectual Properties). The newly developed ASIC was implemented in the Silterra 180~nm CMOS technology and has 16 readout channels. We carried out the performance test at room temperature and the results showed an equivalent noise charge of 2695$\pm$71~e$^-$ (rms) with a detector capacitance of 300~pF. The dynamic range was measured to be 20--100~fC in the low-gain mode and 200--1600~fC in the high-gain mode within 10\% integral nonlinearity at room temperature. We also tested the performance at the liquid-Ar temperature and found a deterioration of the noise level with a longer shaper time. Based on these results, we also discuss a unique simulation methodology for future cold-electronics development. This method can be applicable to design the electronics used at low temperature.

A new type of the Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC), sensitive to Vacuum Ultra-Violet (VUV) light (wavelength λ < 150 nm), is recently developed and produced by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. The basic properties of the new MPPC are measured at cryogenic facility of Waseda university using liquid nitrogen. Temperature dependence of breakdown voltage, capacitance, and dark count rate of the MPPC are also evaluated. In addition, the absolute photon detection efficiency (PDE) for liquid argon (LAr) scintillation light (λ = 128 nm) is estimated to be about 7% with uncertainty of 2% by using 241 Am α-ray source. Based on these basic measurements a possible application of the new MPPC to LAr detector for dark matter search is discussed.
