We report the first observation of lasing in topological edge states in a 1D Su-Schrieffer-Heeger active array of resonators. We show that in the presence of chiral-time ($\mathcal{CT}$) symmetry, this non-Hermitian topological structure can experience complex phase transitions that alter the emission spectra as well as the ensued mode competition between edge and bulk states. The onset of these phase transitions is found to occur at the boundaries associated with the complex geometric phase- a generalized version of the Berry phase in Hermitian settings. Our experiments and theoretical analysis demonstrate that the topology of the system plays a key role in determining its operation when it lases: topologically controlled lasing.

We propose a new scheme for ultra-sensitive laser gyroscopes that utilizes the physics of exceptional points. By exploiting the properties of such non-Hermitian degeneracies, we show that the rotation-induced frequency splitting becomes proportional to the square root of the gyration speed- thus enhancing the sensitivity to low angular rotations by orders of magnitudes. In addition, at its maximum sensitivity limit, the measurable spectral splitting is independent of the radius of the rings involved. Our work paves the way towards a new class of ultra-sensitive miniature ring laser gyroscopes on chip.

Due to the high spontaneous emission coupled into the resonance mode in metallic nanolasers, there has been a debate concerning the coherence properties of this family of light sources. The second-order coherence function can unambiguously determine the nature of a given radiation. In this paper, an approach to measure the second-order coherence function for broad linewidth sources in the near-infrared telecommunication band is established based on a modified Hanbury Brown and Twiss configuration. Using this set-up, it is shown that metallic coaxial and disk-shaped nanolasers with InGaAsP multiple quantum well gain systems are indeed capable of generating coherent radiation.

The nonlinear dynamics of a balanced parity-time symmetric optical microring arrangement are analytically investigated. By considering gain and loss saturation effects, the pertinent conservation laws are explicitly obtained in the Stokes domain-thus establishing integrability. Our analysis indicates the existence of two regimes of oscillatory dynamics and frequency locking, both of which are analogous to those expected in linear parity-time symmetric systems. Unlike other saturable parity time symmetric systems considered before, the model studied in this work first operates in the symmetric regime and then enters the broken parity-time phase.

The last two decades have witnessed tremendous advancements in the area of nanophotonics and plasmonics. Undoubtedly, the introduction of metallic structures has opened a path towards light confinement and manipulation at the subwavelength scale { a regime that was previously thought to be out of reach in optics. Of central importance is to devise efficient light sources to power up the future nanoscale optical circuits. Coaxial resonators can provide a platform to implement such subwavelength sources. They support ultrasmall cavity modes and offer large mode-emitter overlap as well as multifold scalability. Given their large modulation bandwidth, they hold promise for high speed optical interconnects { where they can be used for light generation and modulation simultaneously. In addition, the possibility of thresholdless operation in such devices may have implications in develo** the next generation of efficient lighting systems. In this review article, the physics and applications of coaxial nanolasers will be discussed.

Single mode lasing is experimentally demonstrated in a transversely multi-moded InP-based semiconductor microring arrangement. In this system, mode discrimination is attained by judiciously utilizing the exceptional points in a parity-time (PT) symmetric double microring configuration. The proposed scheme is versatile, robust to small fabrication errors, and enables the device to operate in a stable manner considerably above threshold while maintaining spatial and spectral purity. The results presented here pave the way towards a new class of chip-scale semiconductor lasers that utilize gain/loss contrast as a primary mechanism for mode selection.

A system of two coupled semiconductor-based resonators is studied when lasing around an exceptional point. We show that the presence of nonlinear saturation effects can have important ramifications on the transition behavior of this system. In sharp contrast with linear PT-symmetric configurations, nonlinear processes are capable of reversing the order in which the symmetry breaking occurs. Yet, even in the nonlinear regime, the resulting non-Hermitian states still retain the structural form of the corresponding linear eigenvectors expected above and below the phase transition point. The conclusions of our analysis are in agreement with experimental data.

We demonstrate experimentally that stable single longitudinal mode operation can be readily achieved in PT-symmetric arrangements of coupled microring resonators. Whereas any active resonator is in principle capable of displaying single-wavelength operation, selective breaking of PT-symmetry can be utilized to systematically enhance the maximum achievable gain of this mode, even if a large number of competing longitudinal or transverse resonator modes fall within the amplification bandwidth of the inhomogeneously broadened active medium. This concept is robust with respect to fabrication tolerances, and its mode selectivity is established without the need for additional components or specifically designed filters. Our results may pave the way for a new generation of versatile cavities lasing at a desired longitudinal resonance. Along these lines, traditionally highly multi-moded microring resonator configurations can be fashioned to suppress all but one longitudinal mode.
