Abstract:
On November 3-4 2021, an interplanetary coronal mass injection (ICME) hits the magnetosphere, sparking a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm and auroras as far south as California and New Mexico. All detectors of the SEVAN network registered a Forbush decrease (FD) of 5-10 percentdeep in 1 minute time series of count rates. We present the results of a comparison of Fd registered on mountain altitudes on Aragats (Armenia), Lomnicky Stit (Slovakia), Musala (Bulgaria), and at sea level DESY (Hamburg, Germany), and in Mileshovka, Czechia. We present as well purity and barometric coefficients of different coincidences of SEVAN detector layers on Aragats. We demonstrate disturbances of the near-surface electric (NSEF) and geomagnetic fields at the arrival of the ICME on Earth.

EUDAQ is a generic data acquisition software developed for use in conjunction with common beam telescopes at charged particle beam lines. Providing high-precision reference tracks for performance studies of new sensors, beam telescopes are essential for the research and development towards future detectors for high-energy physics. As beam time is a highly limited resource, EUDAQ has been designed with reliability and ease-of-use in mind. It enables flexible integration of different independent devices under test via their specific data acquisition systems into a top-level framework. EUDAQ controls all components globally, handles the data flow centrally and synchronises and records the data streams. Over the past decade, EUDAQ has been deployed as part of a wide range of successful test beam campaigns and detector development applications.

We demonstrate the long-term ($<$ 1 minute) trap** of Stark-decelerated OH radicals in their $X~^{2}Π_{3/2}~(ν= 0,~J = 3/2,~M_{J} = 3/2,~f)$ state in a permanent magnetic trap. The trap environment was cryogenically cooled to a temperature of 17 K in order to efficiently suppress black-body-radiation-induced pum** of the molecules out of trappable quantum states and collisions with residual background gas molecules which usually limit the trap lifetimes. The cold molecules were kept confined on timescales approaching minutes, an improvement of up to two orders of magnitude compared to room-temperature experiments, at translational temperatures on the order of 25 mK. The present results pave the way for spectroscopic studies of trapped molecules with long interaction times enabling high precision, for investigations of cold collisions and reactions with very small reaction rates, for new avenues for the production of ultracold molecules via sympathetic cooling and for the realisation of new forms of hybrid matter with co-trapped atoms or ions.

Athena is a space-based X-ray observatory intended for exploration of the hot and energetic universe. One of the science instruments on Athena will be the X-ray Integrated Field Unit (X-IFU), which is a cryogenic X-ray spectrometer, based on a large cryogenic imaging array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES) based microcalorimeters operating at a temperature of 100mK. The imaging array consists of 3800 pixels providing 2.5 eV spectral resolution, and covers a field of view with a diameter of of 5 arc minutes. Multiplexed readout of the cryogenic microcalorimeter array is essential to comply with the cooling power and complexity constraints on a space craft. Frequency domain multiplexing has been under development for the readout of TES-based detectors for this purpose, not only for the X-IFU detector arrays but also for TES-based bolometer arrays for the Safari instrument of the Japanese SPICA observatory. This paper discusses the design considerations which are applicable to optimise the multiplex factor within the boundary conditions as set by the space craft. More specifically, the interplay between the science requirements such as pixel dynamic range, pixel speed, and cross talk, and the space craft requirements such as the power dissipation budget, available bandwidth, and electromagnetic compatibility will be discussed.

Test beam measurements at the test beam facilities of DESY have been conducted to characterise the performance of the EUDET-type beam telescopes originally developed within the EUDET project. The beam telescopes are equipped with six sensor planes using MIMOSA26 monolithic active pixel devices. A programmable Trigger Logic Unit provides trigger logic and time stamp information on particle passage. Both data acquisition framework and offline reconstruction software packages are available. User devices are easily integrable into the data acquisition framework via predefined interfaces.
The biased residual distribution is studied as a function of the beam energy, plane spacing and sensor threshold. Its standard deviation at the two centre pixel planes using all six planes for tracking in a 6\,GeV electron/positron-beam is measured to be $(2.88\,\pm\,0.08)\,\upmu\meter$.Iterative track fits using the formalism of General Broken Lines are performed to estimate the intrinsic resolution of the individual pixel planes. The mean intrinsic resolution over the six sensors used is found to be $(3.24\,\pm\,0.09)\,\upmu\meter$.With a 5\,GeV electron/positron beam, the track resolution halfway between the two inner pixel planes using an equidistant plane spacing of 20\,mm is estimated to $(1.83\,\pm\,0.03)\,\upmu\meter$ assuming the measured intrinsic resolution. Towards lower beam energies the track resolution deteriorates due to increasing multiple scattering. Threshold studies show an optimal working point of the MIMOSA26 sensors at a sensor threshold of between five and six times their RMS noise. Measurements at different plane spacings are used to calibrate the amount of multiple scattering in the material traversed and allow for corrections to the predicted angular scattering for electron beams.
